I am not a big white wine drinker and even less a Champagne drinker, but as a Vinous person I attend a lot of tastings and wine dinners where Champagne is offered by those who fancy it more than me. So I created this story to keep track of what is good and what not. After tasting 100+ different Champagnes, I would summarize the situation as follows:
- Do not waste your time on normal NV champagne Cuvees of the big houses. They are of no interest to the connoisseur. The wines lack character and depth. They are like Prosecco or supermarket still wines: commercial offers for quaffing with little gastronomic value. To make matters worse, due to successful marketing even the lousiest Champagne is expensive. Prosecco and Jellow Tail Chard is at least cheap, 10$ or so, Champagne is not even that. So don't a waste of your time and money on it.
- There is great Champagne though both from smaller growers and prestige cuvees of bigger houses. These often are seriously complex wines, much to like. You have to find your style. Less or more dosage (sugar), more creamy or more racy, more brioche, more citrusy, more floral or savory, more/less oxidative, etc. Some of my hard core Champagne friends say that the blanc de blancs (Chardonnay only) are the best. I cannot confirm that. I often find them a bit boring actually, clearly prefer the blends with Pinot. See below my scores of what I was impressed by and what not. Cheers!

During a tasting. Nose of bakery, yeast , quite floral but restraint and not too sweet. Very nice complexity, good tertiary aromas also emerge on the finish. Nice perlage and mouth feel. A top showing.

Not a Champagen buff myself but I found this to be a great Champagne. Mineralic, floral, drinks like a Montrachet or Meursault, goes well with food not just as apero. The perlage is subtle and fine. Great freshness and mouth feel.

Wow, really loved this grower Champagne. Very racy acidity, excellent fruit, minerality, sophisticated perlage, this Extra Brut is not sour and lean, well done. Felt like a Meusault Perrieres with bubbles.

From Magnum. What a great start into this wine dinner. Medium yellow, aromas of apple, bakery, lemon, apricot. Excellent presence and perlage. This struck the right balance of drinkability and complexity. Everyone liked it. It also felt young and fresh from this MG bottle. Terrific!

Wonderful mature Champagne nose with candied apple & cinnamon, vanilla, (I guess that makes apple pie) flowers, ginger. Not too oxidative for the fact that this is 30 years old. The palate stays fresh with fine perlage.

Discrete nose with opened up significantly as the wine sat in the glass. Wonderful nose with just the right amount of tertiary notes of bruised apples, combined with bakery, flowers and yellow fruit. Important to give this some time to open up. As always, Krug's NV Grand Cuvee is about at the same level than the prestige Cuvee of the large houses.

This was very much in the style that I like. Excellent nose nose of brioche, with floral and yellow fruit elements. Lovely bruised apple touch without being nutty/oxidative. Also the perlage was very refined.

Blind tasting dinner. Medium yellow. Wonderful and complex nose of yeasty elements intermixed with flowers, citrus fruit and bruised apple, just the right level of aged aromas before the wine becomes nutty, Krug manages this zone really well. Composed and elegant with a long finish. Alas, if only all Champagne was made like this I would drink much more of it... instead of the large house NV plonk that is served at cocktails. 96-97

During a vintage Champagne tasting at a Merchant. This Champagne was my favorite of the 10 vintage Champagnes served in today's tasting. Complex and deep nose of vanilla, almond, yeast, very aristrocratic and subtle. On the palate very fine perlage with great aromatic length. Long finish. Wow! This will go great with a meal as well.

Merchant blind tasting, double blind. Served in a pair with the Cuvee 164. Some people guessed sparklers from all ober the place. I wrote down “Mineralic, zesty, chalky, grapefruit, crisp and precise but with good fruit and subtle autolytic notes. If this is not Champagne, then holy cow”. Krug it was. Very great showing of these two base Cuvees and you see why Krug demands a premium. 95+. The Cuvee 164 was even more restraint/mineralic and equally impressive.

Expressive and complex nose of brioche, flowers, seaweed, very fragrant. This is really deep and complex. On the palate fresh and clean with a fruity touch to it. Good perlage and long finish. I really feel that this is Champage made from high quality white wine and not just (typical for the basic offerings of the big houses) yeast, bubbles and sugar added to semi-ripe crops. Well done, Egly-Ouriet team.

During a wine tasting dinner at 3-Star Michelin Restaurant Meadowood. Aromas of green apples, touch of lime. This is very fresh and above all the a subtle perlage that I like so much. Not bubbly at all on the palate but more like a refined white wine. One of the best NV Champagnes I had and definitely the best at this price point.

Tasted blind. No dosage Champagne. My favorite Champagne of the night. Very racey palate, clean and crisp, like a Ramonet Chablis or Riesling GG. Citrus, minerals. The owner, Marie Doyard, mentioned that to produce a good non-dosage Champagne you need very high quality grapes and ripeness.

Merchant blind tasting. The 166 was served in a pair with the Cuvee 164. Not knowing at all what is was, I wrote down “Mineralic, zesty, chalky, grapefruit, crisp and precise but with good fruit as well. The Cuvee 164 even more restraint/mineralic, touch of grass on the finish and equally impressive but needs more time. If this is not Champagne, then holy cow”. Krug it was. Very great showing of these two base Cuvees and you see why Krug demands a premium.

During a vintage Champagne tasting at a Merchant. This is from the famous Mesnil-sur-Oger vineyards. Very subtle nose with apple, mint, minerals, a bit much yeast for me. Fine perlage, elegant on the palate. This was grand Champagne no doubt but was clearly beaten by the Krug today. Given it is twice the price, no doubt where my money would go to.

Holy cow, did not know this champagne. Dark yellow color with an orange hue. Exciting and deep nose that goes beyond the off the mill Champagne taste around flowers and bakery, adding apples and a strong dose of quince jam. Good perlage and excellent length. Really liked this.

I like the normal Belle Epoque a lot, one of my favorite large house premium blends. This has the reputation of beeing even better and more exclusive, a star among the top rose bottlings. I thought it was god but not great, so a bit of a let down given its reputation. Nice strawberry and floral elements. On the palate medium- complexity, a bit too sweet for my taste and the bubbles should be finer at 15+ years of age. Solid but overrated, at least from this showing.

During a vintage Champagne tasting at a Merchant. Fresh nose of apple, quince with a hint of vanilla, reminding me of a Chardonnay where the ripeness has really been pushed. Very little of the typical mineral and yeast notes in this Champagne. So, if you prefer the classic style this will not be your first choice. Finishes aromatic, with a strong apple cider note.

This champagne was interesting because the Pinot was quite noticeable in the blend. It included therefore some red wine aromas and bitterness to the normal white champagne scents. Quite a lot of strawberry, Haribo Gummibar etc. After all I would rate it as good but not beyond it. Not sure therefore it makes sense for the price.

I am not a big champagne lover nor expert but I found this both refreshing and complex at the same time. Great aromatics with dry extract, not to sweet but not sour either, perfect balance for my palate. Aromas are around white fruit, minerals with a touch of strawberry. Suggested by the Sommelier. If I recall correctly this is dominated by Pinot Noir. A lovely, fruity nose with raspberry, flowers and some lemon zest. Crisp on the palate, medium length. 91-92

This particular bottles was a 60% Pinot Meunier, 20% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, blend based on the 2011 vintage, disgorged in 2018, dosage of 6 g/l. The color was a bit deeper yellow with an orange hue suggesting some age. I really liked the nose here, very good complexity of a mature Champagne with white and yellow fruit and some bruised apples. Good freshness and creaminess on the palate. Dont know what the price point of this bottle is but it is miles better than the standard offering of the big houses. 93+

From Magnum. At an apero. Really liked this with its yeasty, flower and apple/lemon aromas. Also the dosage makes it pleasant.

This is a small family grower Champagne producer. Quite an unusual label, vintage style. Very nice NV champagne with a distinctive nose of white fruit, bakery (brioche) and some almonds. Good perlage.

Very nice yeasty nose with bakery and brioche. A bit too much dosage on the palate for my taste but this certainly gets the party going, still enough minerality and freshness in the background . Easy to like.

During a Pauillac themed wine tasting dinner. Nose of flowers, strawberry, bakery with very good pinosity. Creamy and elegant on the palate. Quite bubbly. A bit too much dosage for my taste but very good NV rose overall.

From the name I am guessing this is from the Cos d’Estournel owner. Very pleasant Champagne with brioche, flowers, yeast. Pleasant palate with good dosage balance.

During a vintage Champagne tasting at a Merchant. Discrete nose of cherry, with a distinctive bonbon touch, a bit too much for my taste, otherwise good. Quite present acidity on the palate, medium length.

During a vintage Champagne tasting at a Merchant. Distinctively yeasty nose with apple, lemon, very Chardonnay in style. A bit acidic for my palate. Medium finish. I wished for more given the price.

During a vintage Champagne tasting at a Merchant. Interesting appearance, looks almost like a normal wine bottle. The nose was too yeasty for my taste, but with good white fruit and lemon as well. On the acidic side for my palate but with good finish.

Nose of strawberry intermixed with tea leafes, red current, flowers. This bottle was a whiff oxidative. Perlage on the bubbly side but with a sappy, pinoesque finish.

Tasted blind. Nose of green apple, a touch of bakery with a touch of oxidtion pointing to age. Fine perlage, medium length. Given the nutty notes I would drink this up.

At an apero. Decent everyday champagne with classic yeast/mineral aromatics. Solid but not very complex.

Nose of apple and white fruit intermixed with a touch of bakery. This is not overly complex but quite pleasant overall. Will sure work well with a broad audience. Average perlage, medium finish.

Very yeasty nose with a slight oxidative touch. That is the part I did not like about this Champagne. Other than that it showed nice aromas of white fruit with flowers.

During a vintage Champagne tasting at a Merchant. Very unique nose... Nutmeg, butterscotch and a bit oxidative, mushrooms as well. Is this a correct bottle? Don't know what to make with all of this. Many people liked it though. Need to follow up one this once more. 88-93?

Light and steely, lean and clean, white fruit, almost grassy like a SauvBlanc. If you like it fresh and racey, this is your Champagne.

Tasted blind. Started of a bit fruity and sweet, lots of berries and bubbly. I have almost written it off as too Proseccoesque when a serving was poured at the end of the tasting. It was more composed then with a crisper feel and mineralic elements. I found this not easy to judge. 88-92

Italian lunch. We kicked off with this instead of Fanciacorta. I was not that impressed by this bottle. OK for sure but only medium- complexity with aromas of flowers and some bready notes. The palate was clearly too foamy for me. I am not a big Champagne drinker but my bar is quite a bit higher until I enjoy sparklers.

Reserved nose of white fruit, a bit metallic, very little bakery. Good perlage on the palate but a bit lean. Not my cup of tea of an NV Champagne.

Nose of apple, pleasant bakery, some lemon on the finish. Very bubbly on the palate giving me almost a feel of an effervescent vitamin tablet in the mouth. Not on par with the better NV Champagnes.

Not really a noteworthy Champagne. Very basic quality, not much complexity. Confirms that it is never a good idea to drink the base line Champagne of the large houses.

Burgundy lunch. Contender for the best Champagne I had. This was stunning, combining floral elements with minerality, creamy, yet fresh palate and very long aromatic finish. Tertiary notes without being oxidative. A Wow Champagne.

During a tasting lunch. I am not a big Champagne person, so I was particularly interested to see what awaits you at the peak of Champagne. Medium yellow. Expressive and complex nose of yeast, white fruit, flowers, minerals. There is a kind of aged/oxidative touch in these old Champagnes as usual, something that adds complexity but is not so much to my liking. The palate is subtle, complex with a long finish.

Thursday, July 28, 2016 - Served by a friend of mine who is into Champagne. This bottle apparently won Wine Spectator blind tasting against stiff competition like Krug's Mesnil, Roederer's Cristal, Moet's Dom, etc. Very aromatic and floral nose with some apple and other citrus fruit, a touch of brioche but the yeasty side stays very much in the background. Excellent palate, fresh with good volume, long finish with citrus fruit and flowers. I can see why this has won. Up there with the best Champagne's I had.

During a vintage Champagne tasting at a Merchant. My note may look astronomic but in this tasting this was by far the best bottle. It stood, for my palate, miles apart from the rest. The only Champagne I kept coming back to and wowed me every time. Very subtle nose, discrete notes of flowers, mint, nuts and white fruit. elegant and complex. Also on the palate, impressed much more with the depth of the aroma and not just the bubbles. You could sense that this was a great white wine before it was turned into Champagne. Very fine perlage, very long. Terrific!

This blanc de noir has a very light rose hue color, showing its Pinot pedigree. Wow! Amazing nose of flowers, strawberries, bakery, vanilla and all. One of the best Champagne aromas I have witnessed and, even better, not oxidative like most high end Champagnes from Krug, Salon & Co. especially when aged. Absolutely wonderful. At an attractive price level for this quality too.

Wow, this bottle blew us a away, it was that good. Amazing nose of white fruit darjeeling tea leaves, brioche, caramel and some toast. It showed age but zero oxidative character which I hate so much in white wines and Champagne. Just wonderful, everyone loved it at this tasting dinner.
