1970 Château Mouton Rothschild

  • Despite the corroded capsule, low shoulder fill and cork that too easily pushed into the bottle, the wine was marvelous. This was one of the RC (Reserve Chateau) bottling and as always its seductive profile was loved by the group. I doubt this will get better with age but still enough acidity to last a decade or more.

  • served without decanting. Nice nose with some sweet grass, some cigar smoke, a hint of earth, which was just as it should be. Also leather and grilled meats on the nose. Acidity was a little higher now.

  • Chagall label! This was stored in Los Angeles professional storage since 1986 and before that in San Francisco professional storage- not by me, but I know the whole provenance well. Significant bricking on the rim. Translucent in light, but deep garnet in room lighting. Intact cork with Durand and mid shoulder fill. Classy claret! Nice Red currant, sour cherry, tobacco, earth, cedar, dried flowers, leather, flinty mineral, and sous bois. Tannins fully resolved. Good fruit and acid balance. It was a great showing!!!!! I’ve had this wine from various sources including mine over the last few years and this was undeniably the best! Long finish and NO stewed fruit. I would not hold, but if this bottle was 5 years more it would still be impressive.
Happy and great with Flannery Beef!

  • Purchased on Ebay 30 years ago as I was trying to collect a full vertical of Mouton Rothschild. I ended up with two and with a marginal fill this one was relegated to my regular cellar collection. A wine tasting friend replicated the 'Judgement of Paris' blind tasting 3 French vs 3 California cabs.
So, I pulled out my 2nd '70 Mouton since it actually was one of the French wines in the 1976 tasting. Label by Chagall. This bottle had a mid shoulder fill, and good color: medium garnet with moderate browning around the edge. So I was hopeful, but the fruit was 90% gone as were any tannins. Acidity was nicely balanced and my other bottle might live up to prior CT ratings. Fun for all at the tasting.

  • Lovely experience with this on NYE. PnP, this was ready to go right away but not tired at all, with primary fruit left driving the mid-palate and soy, leather, cedar, legumes, and stewed fruits making up the lovely nose. A great example of a perfectly mature wine that was not showing any signs of demise.

  • Pronounced nose intensity with notes of charr wood, toast, spices, earth, tea, slight cooked black fruits notes left. Medium acidity and medium tannin.

  • Was surprisingly light for a Mouton. Lovely cedar, pencil shavings but I think I was drinking it 5-10 years pas its prime.

  • Extracted the cork in 3 pieces despite using a Durand. Colour was deep garnet with brick at the edge. Served immediately after decanting.
The aroma was pronounced. Spice, cinnamon and baking spices to the fore. Then also some volatile acidity, burnt toast, plum, black fruit and rosemary (tending towards both lavender and violet).
The mouth was pleasant with echoes of the aromas but not so distinct. Wine was high in acidity and the finish was medium-.
Overall a very nice bottle at 89/100, the spice on the nose was memorable but it should have been drunk a while ago.

  • second time this year I tasted this wine,
and again it didn't disappoint , waaauw the nose has some flavors of mint, (strange you would think blind about Haut brion...), tabbaco , still young , the guests/tasters guest 1982 and some 1989 , in the mouth the best is behind but still very enjoyable ,

  • served 40 minutes after opening without decanting. Level was mid-shoulder so not the greatest. Initially the nose was a little dusty but not corked. Smoky, earthy, a little brett. Improved with aeration and the dusty notes faded away.

  • we took off for a top tasting with 4 wine freaks !
I had put the wines in the following line up , Mouton 1970, then VCC 1945, then Las cases 1982, to end with Evangile 2009 !
Turned out afterwards that the Las cases would have been better before for the VCC , unbelievable : here are my notes :
Mouton 1970, bottle was perfect, I think the wine is already past its peak, but it is still a very classy Pauillac! In the nose it had some smoked meat
, the texture of the wine in the mouth is still incredible , what a finesse ! wow , the length is not really present anymore , but that makes it just maybe more delicate !
it is still a really nice bottle , we had this with a young milking lamb and it was perfect !
Vieux certan 1945 : what a monster, color was much deeper than Mouton, and from the glass you could already see that the texture was denser! there was a little bit of cloudiness in it , but nothing disturbing !
what a power in the nose, unbelievable, blind I would almost dare to put this on '61, the nose I had leather and even a lot alcohol! in the mouth it was greasy and complex, bwaaa what a wine,
we had this with a pigeon and he went above and beyond ! in my top 5 bottles ever, really unbelievable!
Leoville las cases 1982, bit of a sin for this wine, my mistake, I should have seen it afterwards, always have to open it for the VCC, but on paper this seemed impossible! If you would only drink this wine another night, you really would think
, this is a great bottle and I would probably score it better… The nose, I immediately had chalk and afterwards pencil and graphite, then came some red fruit , under the name of ripe Berry's! but the best thing about this wine is its balance and finesse
something that the mouton also had, but after the VCC this was less appreciated by the other drinkers!
Evangile 2009, which was a blockbuster, was impressed me the most , the wine is very powerful , but is not overwhelming, which you usually have with over mature wine or very sunny years, or at no point did the power came at the expense of finesse, the wine was already ready to drink and
very accessible! lots of violet in the nose and what a monumental aftertaste , but perfect acidity , this wine will last and will be better in 5/10 years, wow , very interesting evening !

  • I drank this regularly up to a decade ago when it was great value on the secondary market, and it was always reliable and never failed to deliver. I do get the feeling now that it is coming to the end of its prime, but that said it is still a fabulous mature old school Bordeaux. It now displays tertiary notes and the fruit has receded, but the tannin is resolved and everything is in balance with great depth and length.

  • Crazy how a wine this old is still giving so much pleasure. Tertiary for sure but complex and very long. Drink without food.

  • Very fragrant, toast/char still singing, very balanced and integrated. Very nice bottle. Kudos. First night open. Mid-shoulder fill, cork and capsule fully merged together with alcohol loving black mold thriving on angel share volatiles. Cork fully saturated and disintegrated upon use of cork extractor with side prongs. Little iron lingering on palette. Still could age many more years, fruit still there and everything singing. Nose aged Pauilliac with meaty and thus iron notes.
*2nd night still drinking great, notice some green pepper on the palette. Toast blew off, though expected. Mouthfeel and viscosity still holding decently. Tannins coming through more noticeably.

  • This was in my cellar for forty years. It was opened for an anniversary and turned out to be a big disappointment. It had reduced to shoulder level. Some previous notes indicate success in this condition. No such luck for me - the wine was oxidized and bitter. It did have an interesting nose. Sometimes old wines come around after an hour or two - not this one.

  • Low expectations from this auction bottle with a high shoulder fill and light signs of seepage. But Sometimes you catch lightning in a bottle. Cork is soaked through and broke in half with the Ah-so but managed to extract fully. From the first whiff you can tell that this is going to be great. Powerful and complex aromas of flowers, library books and cherries. A faint overtone of balsamic adds depth and character. Brilliant ruby-garnet colored, with barely the slightest hint of bricking at the edges. Palate is archetypal Mature Pauillac and utterly seamless (an overused word, but completely appropriate here). Effortless sophistication, medium bodied, with youthful and vibrant and sappy cherry/raspberry fruit, and a broad supporting cast of savory secondary and tertiary leather-sofa-graphite-black-tea-cedar-mulch characters. A caress of the tiniest bit of unresolved tannin is like a brush of raw silk on the cheek.

  • Wine Night in Charlotte -- Cork Vault Bottle Share Returns! (Charlotte, NC): Top-shoulder fill. Slo-ox and poured ~30 minutes after opening. Delightful aromas waft out of the glass: dried plum and cigar box. Silky on the mouthfeel this wine was tasty though lacking heft at 50 years of age. Medium body. The wine was balanced and elegant with soft, enjoyable but fading notes of dried cherries, sweet cassis, and earthy bell pepper. Nice, medium finish for a delightful wine still enjoyable if a few years past its prime.

  • Beautiful mature claret. Fascinatingly more Pauillac than Mouton. Low shoulder fill but gorgeous dark color with minimal fade. And held for 2+ hrs. Nose of used leather and pencil box and hummus earth. Plenty of fruit! Svelte and smooth. A little allspice, dried red currants and pu-erh. All very light and nothing dominant. Medium finish. All around beautiful.

  • The fill was top shoulder; stood upright for a week before service, quick decant for sediment. Healthy deep garnet with some bricking. Classic mature Pauillac bouquet, with notes of dried plum, cigar box, sous bois, black truffle. Medium bodied, elegant, fully mature, silky texture, excellent delineation, impressive depth and balance. Long and savory finish. What a treat!

  • Definition of aging elegance, fully mature just past its 50th birthday but still young at its heart. Some tannins still present but soft, ripe cherry flavors showing through. Complex. Great with roast prime rib.

  • Drank with 99 mouton with lutz, Lena, juju (no taste because of Covid and she did not drink) for my birthday. Thin, delicate, still masculine ... a little disappointing. But great to drink it with lutz as wine was for his 50th birthday. Cork broke when removed from bottle.

  • During an evening of fine Bordeaux wines at Glasshouse in Kew - shame about the appalling sommelier service... so beware entrusting them with any special bottles...

This wine split the table. Some found distracting almond notes and found it possibly not 100% clean. Others (including myself) liked it a lot, there was a superb sweetness in its 20 minute drinking window as it got splash decanted that was beautiful. Then the wine faded away. To me an admirable performance for a 50 year old beauty.

  • Wonderful! Really savory bouquet: smoked brisket, brown sauce, violet liqueur. Soft and pillowy texture, cassis coulee, burnt rib tips, pencil tip, and cracked pepper. What a window into this wine.

Other wines were had but this was all anyone wanted to talk about.

  • PNP. A fine, elegant, fully mature Mouton. This is one to drink now but I really enjoyed it for the elegant, mature, complex wine that it was on this evening. Very nice, and my favorite of a few '70 Bordeaux's we had over dinner. A-

  • Farnsburg best bottle: A wine I never really liked, it has medicinal notes of cherry drops, some vegetable stock and some green notes. Not a good mouton and not a good wine in my opinion

  • My disappointment of the night. I have had several bottles of this wine but it has been quite a few years since I last tried it. All my previous experiences have been positive. Opened this wine and double decanted it before leaving for the restaurant. It smelled foul. The color was turbid and I discarded about 1/4 of the bottle and did not even bother to put it back in the bottle. I decided to take it along any way to see what would happen.
After about 4 hours the skunky odor resolved and the wine became drinkable. It was lean with flavors of wet earth and leaves. No vibrant flavors but drinkable. I don't know if this was just a bad bottle or what this wine is at this stage in its life. I tend to think this was just a flawed bottle.

  • Mid shoulder bottle in visually excellent condition, 60’s and 70’s saw a lot of inconsistency due to the relaxed bottling schedule. This botttle was very good, garnet tawny colour. It’s definately at its peak now for my enjoyment. Classic mouton nose, beautiful palate with sweet fruit notes, espresso, cassis, smoke and licorice. Drink up

  • A single bottle of this legendary wine had been sitting in the family cellar for more than 40 years. We finally decided that it was time to open it, and were delighted to discover that it had aged beautifully. Tannins were still present, but had mellowed considerably. It opened up to its full potential after roughly an hour and a half - two hours of breathing, but was enjoyable almost immediately after opening. I could detect faint signs of acidity in the background, indicating that it was beginning to lose something of its character - but this hardly dampened the experience.

If you have a bottle, open it right away. We paired it with an improved plate of tournedo rossini with excellent results.

  • Had low expectations here as only mid shoulder fill. Pnp at home. Still a fairly dark garnet with only slight browning, however not clear / somewhat muddy color. Slightly oxidative on the nose but drinkable. Still good weight on the savory palate, again a bit oxidative, some medicinal notes, resolved tannins. Short finish. NR

  • Easily outperformed my expectations, so we must have been fortunate to have had this bottle. A muscular, commanding wine, admittedly past peak but with so much to offer. Notes of dark fruit, forest floor and cedar, seamless and with a lengthy finish.

  • Acker 200; 2/7/2020-2/8/2020 (The Pool & Cipriani): From a very large bottle. There was something not 100% right with this one. It came across as a bit of brett and slightly funky. Possibly might have blown off although I suspect this bottle had been open for awhile by the time we tried it so maybe not.

  • This was the second MR1970 I have had and last time it was absolutely stunning. This time I had some problems to start with as the cork had a thick layer of mold at the top and much of it had started to crumble. But the wine was in good condition and I decided to decant right before serving only to get rid of sediment. The 1970 has had some mixed reviews suggesting big differences between individual bottles. But I must be lucky as this wine has delivered wonderful things every time I have had it. It had a light ruby colour without any hints of oxidation. Once opened the nose delivered cherries, tobacco and leather but continued to develop and also offered lead pencil and graphite notes. The palate was elegant and structured. Medium bodied with some fine tannins still present at the tip of the tongue with mature red fruit and a well balanced acidity. I do think this is a great wine based on the two bottles I have had. The label designed by Chagall is also one of my absolute favourites.

  • Quite cloudy appearance. Nose of Caramel, dark fruit, underwood, and old leather. Quite high acidity with some fruit and a hint of green flavors. Medium finish. Nice, very good, mature Bordeaux, although not a great wine.

  • A fabulously resolved bottle in the perfect place. Pure and elegant. A delight. Effortless grace. The 1970 vintage is notoriously unreliable especially at Mouton, but this bottle was a dream, and reminded me of a perfect bottle of the 1975 a few years ago (also highly variable). My top rated wine of the night.

  • Obituary: 1970 Bordeaux: Nineteen-seventy Mouton is reliably terrible and this bottle is more evidence coming in last place in this ‘70 Bordeaux horizontal. Mean, astringent and very unbalanced. Not spoiled but even dedicated necrophiliacs will not find much to like.

  • As usual with this vintage of Mouton, the gorgeous Marc Chagall label is the best part. Now well beyond its best, it is too thin and acidic. The maroon color verging on brown was less promising than the two older vintages we shared. Yet this particular bottle was better than most because there was a hint of old wine sweetness in the top note at first which unfortunately did not survive the evening. Sad that this vintage released right about the time Mouton was elevated to First Growth was devoid of Premier Cru Classé character.

  • brick red with orange rim - lean nose of old cabernet flavors and dried herbs (nutmeg) - faded mouth but still a good balance of acid, tannin and mature fruit - short (5 sec) finish - undoubtedly was much better many years ago, but still continues to be enjoyable - paired well with ripe French triple-creme cheeses

  • Acker Auction - May 2019 (Zuma in NYC): Hard to know exactly what was going on with this wine. My impression was prob over the hill, but it could also just have been in an 'off' period. It starts off really quite ok up until the finish and then the first sip had this weird bitter note to it that dominated and left a less positive impression. With a bit of air that sharpness in the finished seemed to mute down and so it ends up being more of the savory bordeaux character. Perhaps not as exciting and vibrant as some wines, but enjoyable and drinkable.

  • Tooch Going Away Dinner (TDS): Appealing nose of mature plum fruit, band aid and green pepper. Mature fruit still has good energy and richness. Nice complexity of earth, funk, cigar and bell pepper. Nice, but this is a little subdued relative to 1st Growth expectations.

  • A farewell to Tooch (Chicago, IL): Initially a little stinky, but that blew off right away. This is a pretty old school bottle of claret, with its graphite and leather. I think overall I liked this more than many others at the table, and I liked it more than I thought I would too. It's a pretty brawny wine, and while the fruit isn't on full display anymore, there's still some pretty nice elements overall.

  • slightly less dark than latour drunk with. textbook cedary mouton nose of lead pencil and slightly spicy cassis, lush and flowery: a true bouquet, a bit minerally and slightly greenish-cabernet at first, is even more beautiful over time. delicious, succulent, high-toned, perfect balance of a melange of flavours of soft, ripe, hair sweetish fruits,; bit loose textured compared to latour, lafite, h-b. lightish body; soft, caressing texture; delicate finish fades very slowly and harmoniously. probably at peak now

  • Ruby colour still with a brick edge. When first poured the nose suggested forest floor, damp leaves and vegetal notes but blackberry and raspberry fruit, violets, earthy, dusty, dried leaves. The palate is super smooth on entry but then there’s a lovely fresh black fruit with spice, tannins and acidity and a minute long finish. Brilliant

  • Opened and poured in the glass immediately just in case in case its age had rendered it fragile. It hadn't. The colour was good, a dark crimson, not at all bricky at the edge. The tannins were soft and the palate was typically claret with cedar, tobacco and dark fruits, with detectable acidity. certainly not dried out. There was also a long finish It remained unchanged, neither fading nor developing, in the glass for over an hour.

  • Clearly past peak, but this bottle took 2.5 hours to reach its full potential. Nose was lovely all along, but palate was slow to develop some richness. Once it did, it was very tertiary and slightly drying, but there was enough cassis to make it enjoyable. Tobacco, cedar, and leather definitely dominate at this point.

  • High Shoulder Fill. Cork crumbled on opening. Decanted an hour and enjoyed over the next two. Very complete wine. Great balance of mature fruit, earth, and a nice vanish.

  • Capsule was fused to the bottle and the cork was pure sponge, so my expectations weren't high. But this turned out to be a winner. My first glass started out strong but faded after 15 minutes in the glass - which was worrisome - but the wine continued to open up and gain weight over the course of the next 2 hours. It was thoroughly enjoyed by our group of 10. What a treat to drink one of the Judgement of Paris wines - even if it was one of the lower ranked my wines at that tasting. The magnum format likely helped, but this wine was in glorious shape. Yes it was clearly an aged Bordeaux, but it was still vibrant and lively. The 1994 Mouton we drank alongside it paled in comparison.

  • Delicious matured Pauillac.

First off it was very dusty and mushroom-y.

But after some air, it developed beautiful grilled green bellpepper, meat, tobacco and musty cellar notes.

The tannins are still there to keep it structured.

This wine is great now and will not be better. Drink within the next 5 years.

  • Acker BYO Holiday Dinner (Tribeca Grille): Starting to go over the hill I think (or at least this bottle was). Small taste. Still that compelling first growth mixture of cigar and leather and old school library which I ascribe to a lot of bordeaux. In this case though just a bit better structured than the average wine although not quite up to the standards of some of the other first growths drunk that night.

  • Bordeaux 1959 – 2014 (blind)”, flight 5, wine 3. The wine was medium ruby in colour, turning garnet towards the edges, and offered subtle aromas of mint, cedar, tobacco and ethereal notes. On the palate the medium- to light-bodied, very balanced wine showed red fruit, red cherry, cedar, mint and ethereal notes, held together and carried by the wine’s great acidity, with fully resolved tannin and incredible length. Drink now.

  • Pale amber, brown-orange hues; dusty musty nose at first opening, a bit of prunes, cherry skins indicative of the fairly low fill to mid-shoulder on this one; on the palate it was a bit acetic, with a high acid, tangy juicy aspect throwing it off balance a bit and showing just a bit too much old dried prunes even for this age. Tannins were dissipating and barely present, medium body with a moderate finish. Clearly not the best of the bunch. Had this a couple years ago and it was sailing, so must believe it was the low fill condition of the bottle. Notes state "nice, older Bordeaux character but". Interesting, but did not live up to its potential. 91-92

  • Nice dark fruit. Plums, blackberries, blackcurrants. All the secondary and tertiary notes that one would expect from something from 1970 are present. Tobacco, dried herbs. leather, cedar. Medium + body, good acidity and a wonderful long finish. Holding up well at 46 years old; but drink it now.

  • Auction bottle with unknown provenance and high shoulder fill, so we opened this bottle with trepidation. Soft slightly loose cork removed in three pieces. Allowed to breathe in bottle 30 minutes, then decanted and served. Clear deep oxblood-garnet color with reflections of mahogany. Magnificent bouquet of cigar box, truffles, red currants, boysenberries, cedar, and stony soil. With time, the bouquet freshened and offered more fruit. On the palate this was sophisticated, regal, balanced, with medium-full body and silk-satin mouthfeel. Continued to improve over an hour, eventually showing hints of roasted cashew. The last sip was the best -- so often the case with a great wine. A properly stored bottle of this wine likely has many more years of life.

  • Garnet-brown color. Fully mature, with nose of pencil lead and sous-bois. Medium+ body, good acidity and long finish. Nice to try 40 years after the judgment of Paris. The second bottle we opened had more funk than the first one.Drink now.

  • A visit from Chris with David and Brian in attendance. (My house): Despite an upper shoulder fill and a completely disintegrated cork (even with the durand in hand), the Mouton showed completed correct. All of the typical tertiary elements were there but balanced by light red fruits and dried herbs on the nose along with plums, a slight sweetness that some thought reminiscent of coconut but seemed to me to be more like a candied red fruit. The finish was epic on this one and it paired quite well with the lamb stew. A memorable experience.

  • Dinner at Seasons (Seasons By Olivier E., 3/F, Two Lee Gardens, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong): A pair of small glasses 'gifted' at the end of a great dinner where many of the key figures in the Hong Kong wine world were relaxing after a long day at the Exhibition Centre. Colour was clouded and 'separated'. Nose held some faded glory.....but very faded. Sadly, the palate had lost any tannin and fruit leaving just acidity. C'est passe.

  • Upper shoulder fill.
Fantastic, traditional, full bodied mature Bdx on the nose. Bt, alas, the palate was getting tired. Lots of cigar-ash, cedar and prunes.
Surpringly this wine got more into the groove, while sitting in the fridge for a night. In the mouth it was more round, supple, slightly sweeter than the day before.
    So, up a notch.

  • Expected this 45-year old bottle to be over it's prime window, but surprisingly the aromas first wowed us with richness, complexity and attractiveness, and then carried through to a perfectly matured Bordeaux, showing incredible freshness of fruit, not a hint of bricking or off flavor, and a memorably-long finish. Paired perfectly with dinner at a Swiss-French restaurant with a variety of entrees, and reminded all of us what a Bordeaux First-Growth is all about. Amazing experience. If cellared perfectly, this could have gone another decade at least.

  • Very charming and very perfumed. Very open right out the gate. Dried dark berries, dried currant leaf, dried cedar, asian spices, floral. Not as powerful as the '70 Latour next to it, more resolved and ready to drink.

  • Second time I have tasted this wine last time in 2007. Still going along very well. Medium red brick colour and a little opaque. Medium body with a bouquet after decanting of dried red fruits plum and cedar. A floral note and a residual sweetness to the tannin that was surprising for 45 years young. Finish isn't as powerful as last time but still a timeless beauty from Bordeaux. Well recommended. Enjoy.

  • NFA Dinner 2014 (Gattopardo Restaurant, Tras Street, Singapore): It was a relief to return to old, old school stuff after two alcohol-rich, turbo-charged modern Riojas, and I enjoyed this wine very much even though it was not the strongest of Moutons. It was very alive though, and very typical - I actually called it a Mouton from a less than great vintage, but guessed mid-1980s or early 1990s. It had a mature nose, with funky notes of damp earth, old tobacco and some meaty inflections showing some age. This were met by a core of sweet cassis and blackberry fruit met with some floral notes, a bit of menthol and that typical whiff of cedar wood. A nicely pleasant bouquet, very classic Pauillac. The palate was clearly a bit on the thin side for a first growth and lacked some complexity for something of this age, but it was still pretty satisfying. The tannins had softened into a velvety robe, and fresh juicy acidity enlivened very friendly notes of black cherries and cassis, with a flush of warm spice and tobacco showing in a surprisingly long finish. This was quite yummy in a gentle, charming way. One of the more enjoyable wines of the night I thought, probably because it was one of the rare few that was perched towards the end of its drinking window rather than being far too young. Lovely art by Marc Chagall on the label by the way.

  • Got 6 bottles many years ago from private cellar (cheap) where they were probably poorly stored - have noticed tremendous BV, with at least 2 that were good/great and (now) two that were certainly not - probably way past it's prime, but I' praying (for my 2 remaining) that it was another example of BV

  • Tough, hard, dry, tannic and austere in style, the nose is much better, with its mature, secondary aromatics than the palate, which is where the wine falls apart. Drink up. This is never going to get better.

  • SAG (Blind) Tasting (Chez Weber - Chicago IL): Tasted double blind in what turned out to be a "1970" flight. Charming aromatic start with mocha, espresso, cedar and spice. Less interesting flavors with a slightly bitter finish. 92 point nose, 85 point flavors.

  • In direct comparison with 1970 Latour slightly more evolved in terms of colour. Super fragrant and complex on the nose: minty, herbal with forest notes, savoury spices. Amazing depth. Velvety on the palate, sweet fruit, superb structure and balance. Exceptionally long. A wonderful bottle. 95-97

  • cork completely drenched in wine and it breaks while opening. Bad sign. Brick-red color showing its age. I was a child when this MR was made. "Let it be" was playing in the court-yard. Long time has gone by and a bad cellaring accounts for this madeirized taste which hides almost all the rest. After 2hr in the decanter the maderized taste slowly diminishes but unfortunately not enough to express the original dna of this wine

  • vastly underrated !! MAGNUM BT = classy wine but buy good level bottles and well cellared mags ever better do that and you are in for a serious surprise ! do not buy a bottle unless in upper shoulder or better , there were cork problems only in the 750 ml bottles the bottles above upper shoulder in any bottle size has still 20-50 years esp mags and d-mags to go dont listen to the scare mongers this is the dogs bollocks when you get it right greater than nearly every other 1970 Bordeaux its unique its not treacle like a 61 it is a ferrari its the earth truffles the woods leather mineral and layered it has amazing elegance and subtle presence ! its old school yes its just about mature but its solid and holding in the bottle conditions i mentioned storage is everything here - yes there is fruit going through the wine but its not a sweet wine more in the nicely off dry style , o and the chegal label so sexy , i think sexy describes this at its best it is sexy i had it with guinie fowl and it was perfect

  • Bordeaux 1985 as main theme (@ Bottles; Sas van Gent, Netherlands): Fun! My other TN in CT from 1988 scored the wine 95. With this new note I (blind) scored the wine 95 again. Beautifully mature and rustic bouquet, with earth, some good bell pepper and smoke. On the palate a mature wine, but there are still red and dark forest fruits and melted tannin. Perfect acidity and a lot of finesse and very refined. A great beauty and although the wine will not improve anymore, it will last a few more years.

  • French Wine Tasting Dinner at Renée's: Renée's: Great solid dark ruby color with a little garnet fading; aromatic with spices, black and red cherry, sweet cigar spices, red and black licorice, soft leather, forest floor and a bit of sauteed mushroom or truffle; silky medium body with soft, fine, but still ample tannins; powerful but perfectly balanced. This is in great shape and still very strong. Great with the prime rib. 95-96

  • Decanted for two hours.
An extremely elegant faded lady of a wine. Nose of plum, truffle. Colour tending to a brickish red at edges but still deep at core of glass.
Flavour opened up in glass with a subtle mature plum and a dash of charred oak; vegetal hints with a gentle balancing acidity. In a perfect harmony that other wines can only dream of - but delicate.
Highly enjoyable and still excellent now, it must have been sensational ten years ago.
A singleton so long in my cellar I have forgotten where I obtained it from. Drink up

  • 11.5% ABV. Have to mention the label with this wine, although I usually wouldn't with a tasting note. It's an absolute beauty though, and I've always been drawn to this wine as a result.

Great cork- good fill level. First impressions when poured are of a relatively lightly colored wine- a marked contrast to the dense Latour of the same year.

Very little fruit left on the nose- mostly a rather wonderful forest floor scent which has a delicious freshness to it. A touch of caramel apples here and there, perhaps a little chocolate. The odd metallic edge too. The Pauillac standards of tobacco and graphite (the latter dominating at first but receding with air).

Michael Broadbent seems to think this wine is too acidic, but I don't personally see it in this bottle; though having said that I perhaps value a bit of an acidic kick more than most. The balance is just about right. The tannins are beautifully sweet and integrated. Finish is long and delicious, if perhaps a fraction sour.

Overall seems a little professorial though, and perhaps a touch straightforward. It's biggest problem though is that incredible Latour.....

  • My first mature fine Bordeaux. BN fill, cork soaked. Drank it over seven hours, although only a small glass poured for the first three hours. Really needed time to come together, but filled out very nicely. Brick on the rim, but still fairly dark red core.

The wine was a great experience. It went from thin and tart when opened to a medium body with good complexity. The Pauillac notes were present: Cedar, cigar box, pencil shavings. Some dried herbs. But also still some fruit, primarily blackcurrant. Later also notes of coffee and dark chocolate. Lovely perfumed nose and impressive complexity. Not big and bold, but very elegant.

Conclusion is that this bottle was in great shape and lived up to high expectations.

  • Alliance dinner. From magnum. Drank over 3 hours. Really excellent nose of dark fruit, flowers, cedar, leather and graphite. Wonderful depth and balance in the glass. The gained an excellent sweetness of fruit over time and just great silkiness. Long lingering finish. This might be better than the Latour.

  • The best example I have ever tasted of this frustratingly variable wine, triumphant over the other two '70s we had, Latour and Palmer although all were wonderful. Gorgeous bouquet of flowers and dark berries. Full on the palate but no heaviness, relatively delicate for this wine. Sourced from Acker auctions a few years ago.

  • A bottle in perfect shape. Decadent, and like many older Mouton (for me at least) a bit mushy. Like many 1970 bdx, I like it but its not a rock star.

  • A bit tired, may have seen some rough treatment over it's life. Slight oxidization on the nose. However, palate was balanced, polished and quite enjoyable. A pristine bottle of this would likely be amazing. Certainly showed typical Mouton character too.

  • From a 375. Mid shoulder fill. The was cork soaked completely through and some wine had clearly gotten stuck between the foil and cork. Regardless, the cork came out in a single piece. However, a horrid odor of rotting vegetables permeated the air while I removed the cork. Crestfallen, I decided to decant it in hopes that this smell would blow off. To my surprise, it did. The result was a fully mature wine. On the nose I detected worn leather, graphite, and a hint of raisins. The taste was true to the nose, adding in a bit of prune or perhaps fig as well as crystal clear acidity that caused my mouth to water. Yet the finish was short and the mid palate was a bit hollow. Ultimately, I expect this bottle was on the decline but still quite enjoyable.

While drinkable, this showed a brown leafy dried out quality with a slight burnt rubber aroma. Tnis was not served as Mon felt it may have been heat damged. Lacked fruit and little tannins, the flavors came accross simple and one dimentional at best.

  • A great Bordeaux that has seen it's time. Thoroughly enjoyed over an eight hour period from a decanter. A brick red is the only way to describe the color. The aroma was a gorgeous marriage of red fruits and earth, while the flavor profile displayed plums, raisins, figs, and undertones of cherries. The tannins were still very present, but the focus of the wine was starting to fade. Although this wine had a muted entry, the mid-palate was very balanced and the finish lasted longer than expected with a time of 30-40+ secs. Delicate and supple, this wine is still very alive, but asking to be drank now. Enjoy!

There's a sense of polish and elegance here, bright acidity beneath and it's very enjoyable - though seems to be declining and didn't hit the heights of a bottle I enjoyed a few years ago.

  • Signs of seepage around the cork, which came out of the bottle in crumbles. Ullage level was just below the shoulder, and the person who shared the bottle said it had been stored in a non-refrigerated environment. The color was dark and fairly brown--almost the color of an aged port but without the viscosity. On the nose there was a clear smell of raisin and licorice. Seemed quite oxidized. Long palate that reminded me of tawny port or oloroso sherry, with a nutty profile along with licorice and prunes. Fairly complex with a nice transition across the palate. Acid and tannins were gone. We didn't finish the bottle. 11.5% alcohol.

  • Decant for sediment, aerate one hour. Surprisingly youthful at the core, with subtle but noticeable bricking to the rim. Elegant, evolved aromas of toffee, cocoa powder, cassis and tobacco leaf. Medium bodied but with fantastic intensity. In the context that its over 40 years already, it overwhelms the palate, lasts nearly 30 seconds, something the brain probably wasn't expecting. This had obviously been well preserved, I feel pretty lucky.

  • Opened along side of 93 Laffite, 79 Petrvs, 78 Las Cases. This was my last favorite of the night. The cork was in good condition. Bricking rim with dark brown core. Decanted 30 mins and the nose remained rather closed comparing to others. Hints of leather and cedar on the nose. Hidden berries and hint of licorice on the palate. Smooth tannins but the finish was short-medium with bitter edge. A wine has gone down from its prime.

  • Sadly, largely gone, auction bottle, unknown provenance. Probably not kept in ideal conditions along the years. Debated whether to pop and pour or decant and breath. Decanted and at first taste was rough. Got a bit smoother over an hour but never reached desired level and was disappearing. An 81 Lafite the same night was surprisingly similar in taste character but with more fruit and balance left.

  • Drank alongside a 1970 Chateau Latour, this vintage has character. The cork was impossible to get out and we had to filter the wine into the decanter. The wine was left to breathe for slightly less than an hour. My initial concerns were that we would have lost the aroma out of the bouquet, but was wrong. The colour was a wonnderful claret colour full of life as opposed to a dark brooding maroon. The initial bouquet was pleasant with hints of leather and cedar mixed with blackberries. The first taste was surprisingly closed and led me toinitially prefer the Latour. As time progressed, this wine continued to evolve and open leading to some wonderful long drawn tastes which remained on the pallet for a while. As good as the Latour. One questions, if this bottle were kept in pristine condition like the Latour, would this have out performed?

  • Rather dark in color no real hint of blue.
A rather fresh aroma of dark berries a somewhat spicy note and I also get some eucalyptus, very aromatic and a treat to smell at.

The taste is not that focused but it still has powerful tannins and a powerful body.

  • One of the best showings yet of this very inconsistent wine, sourced from Acker retail a couple of years ago and in superb condition with the ullage just below the neck. As usual, the impression was linear with just two notes, cedar and cassis. Not as stern as usual, more expressive and softer in texture. Good acidity, yet thankfully not sour. Modest length. Still seems young despite the slight browning at the edge.

  • Old Bordeaux: Second bottle of this in the last few months. The first was unfortunately flawed, but this was firing on all cylinders. Chris, our personal Michael Broadbent, mentioned that this was perhaps the finest 70 Mouton he has had, as the wine is known to have quite a good amount of bottle variation. It opens up a bit clenched and almost punchy, not really showing its terroir. Many gravitated towards the Latour as a result, but with time, the Mouton unfolded and really showed classic Mouton notes of cedar, regal aged cassis and leather. It reminded me of a less full version of the 1966 Mouton Rothschild we drank in February. True transparency and great claret.

  • Older Bordeaux (Chez Glowa - Bethesda, MD): I thought the aromatics on this wine were absolutely intoxicating. Cedar tones, graphite and sous bois combined with beautiful cranberry and a darker cassis note. Palate was well resolved and silky. Haunting tones of smoked provencal herbs, aged leather, cranberry and cedar were tied together wonderfully. Finish was the perfect length and there was still a nice tannin structure. So happy that this showed well after my encounter with this wine offered up a tired example.

  • From memory from tasting held at Chateau Loreto for RV's birthday in late 2010. We poured this wine on a night that proved to be an embarrassment of riches with an outrageously delicious line up that included 1990 Dominus, 1995 La Fleur de Gay, 1996 Mouton, 1996 Pontet Canet, 1996 Lynch Bages and 2003 Riussec as the closer. Decanted from a well-stored double magnum, I was blown away by the fact that this wine had not faded one bit - the color was still an intense ruby red with no bricking. Aromatically, it was beautiful, text-book Mouton (coffee, milk chocolate, leather and mint). What really stunned me was that after 40 years, the fruit seemed as fresh as the day it was picked. Aside from the astounding youth of this wine, it was a delicious, beautiful claret with nice warm, red berry flavors and a fine, smooth finish with perfectly integrated tannin. Really enjoyable as a nostalgic intellectual and drinking experience but, ultimately, not a profound wine. I also agree with other posters who do not recommend decanting this wine for very long. After about an hour, this wine started to lose its aromatics and the finish turned sour and acidic by the one hour thirty mark. 96 Mouton was WOTN, followed very, very closely by the Pontet Canet.

  • '70's night at Morton's (Bordeaux) (Morton's NYC): Round and sweet with warm fruit. Soft and friendly. A bit of coffee. Some acidic structure that is well integrated, not overwhelming. Herb, mint. Very nice. Drinking well, not fading. I've had this wine four or five times and have never had a good bottle before, in fact several times the wine has been undrinkable/flawed. This bottle was wonderful. I have one left and have hopes that it will be as good as this one. My #2 of the night.

  • Decanted and consumed within an hour. I am not surprised that the scores were low for those who decant 1970 wine for more than an hour - it simply looses larger part of its bouqet over that time (or perhaps after all these years not all bottles are created equal!). For me it was a fantastic experience. Very pronounced nose of cedar plank and liquorice, really strong. Dense red color - not at all pale aged red, almost deep in fact. Tannins are soft, slight pleasant acidity and massive forever going aftertaste. Massive success.

The nose had red fruit aromas with notes of eucalyptus, cedar, brett and a little cough syrup/medicinal nuance. The palate had currant, tobacco and earth flavors with a medium length finish. A graphite note came out at the end of the finish. This was a fun bottle to get to taste.

  • Decanted and poured. Garnet with amber rim. Nice cigar box, slightly earthy nose. Nice complexity, however, it seems to be dwindling on the mid-palate since it is losing some fruit. It did seem to improve after 2-3 hours in the glass...a good sign. It did not show as well as the 70 Montrose in the same flight.

  • Gorgeous and unforgettable wine, the 1970 Mouton. I had never tried a vintage this old, with such a distinctive bouquet and orange color around the rim. Every sip was a moment to savor, and it went fast, too. At this stage, the 1970 Mouton's fruit seems to have faded considerably. With that said, its secondary characteristics are the real star of the show. Bottle condition: Though the cork cracked on its way up, I managed to salvage the wine, which was in perfect condition. I am amazed that the broken cork came out shedding nothing but one speck that stuck to the side of my glass. All in all, it was an amazing experience.

  • (Hugh's bottle, purchased many years ago) While very good in an old-fashioned way and full of life, the '70 Mouton is stubbornly linear and tastes like a liqueur of cassis. Not a bad thing, of course, but I yearn for more complexity in a 40+ year old Bordeaux. On the bright side, there's still tannin and acidity in good balance, so it seems like this wine will live forever. Very enjoyable if you keep your expectations in check.

  • First Growths (slightly disappointing) and an amazing Port (John V.'s): All right, I like older wines. Luckily Vic was there too last night or I would have been out on a limb. The group pretty much all panned this one, but Vic and I had it as our #2 wine. Yes, it is old. And yes, it is not a first growth. But it had such elegance with great texture. Wonderful complexities. The fruit is only a shadow of what it was, but there is still some left. If you like older Bordeaux, this is really still nice.

  • Drank during a wine dinner with friends in the fantastic restaurant The Modern in the MOMA in New York. Unfair competition on the table for this MR70: MoutonRotschild 82, Pichon Lalande 1982 and the amazing Latour 1970. Very good level (base of neck); opened 12 hrs in advance, poured out half a glass and put on cork again. Color rather light (compared to the other wines), showing 15-20 years of age on the rim. Good, but not overwhelming classical Bordeaux nose with black fruits and some sweetness, leather, vanilla and rather present tannines. Not very balanced. Also some green unripe notes in the nose. Taste consistent with nose; cassis, not very fullbodied, but pleasant. No further evolution during the four hourse on the table.

  • First Growths, etc @ Howard's (Old Greenwich, CT): Fully mature, maybe on its decline, but it is absolutely drinking well. Loads of secondary and tertiary flavors, leather, earth, cedar and truffles. Still holding a beam of cassis. Slightly milky mouthfeel. The silky tannins are completely resolved.

  • Savory and mature but wonderfully complex with highly-evolved and meaty aromatic notes of dried red cherry, cedar, smoked bacon, mushroom, spice, and chocolate. Medium bodied, with a modest, and certainly resolved tannic structure; this is well balanced, though on the tarter side, offering deep flavors of herbs, leather and dried tobacco that seem to last and last on the finish.

  • Older Bordeaux at Troquet (Boston, MA): Stunning; surprisingly dark red in colour for a 39 year old wine with an awesome aromatic profile of leather, cigar smoke, red fruits, earth and truffles. Phenomenal in the mouth - there's a sense of restrained power here with deep savoury leathery, earthy and truffle flavours that take your attention away from the gentler red fruited notes, and with time this unveils more chocolate and smoky dimensions. Fully mature with resolved tannins, bright acidity underneath and a silky, polished texture in the mouth. Started to fade a little after an hour+ of air, but until then was really amazing to drink.

  • Consistent with numerous previous tastings of this seemingly timeless Mouton, this pristine bottle (sourced from AMC retail store) was very deep in color. A few hours in the decanter at home and a couple more in the glass did nothing to soften it but on the positive side, it refused to fade. Like cassis liqueur. Intense, but one dimentional. Still, the strongly flavored mid palate is impressive.

  • Popped and poured, this has a pronounced light sweetness to it. Not in a Madeira kind of way and not overwhelming, however. Nice deep purple with a tinge of brown. Delicate structure with light to medium tannins that are still hanging in there. This should continue to drink well through 2014.

  • Cork broke into 2 pieces and was soaked. Level was high shoulder.
Didn't disappoint. Nose was still quite intense and enticing with some sage/menthol notes along with leather, cassis and a lot of tobacco.
Med body, still holding a good color, very nice fruit on the plate with cassis again and earthy notes. Finish is long.
Overall was great with a simple steak frites.
One thing to notice is that he wasn't holding up in the glass. After 10mn, wine was becoming flat and less focused.

  • Mouton Madness: SDR's BWE Thursday Night Dinner (Equinox Restaurant, Washington DC): Medium-dark red, lightening at rim. Really nice complex nose of cassis, cedar, soy, and tobacco. Medium-full body, complexity follows through on the palate with good balance, medium-long finish, sweet classic aged-Bordeaux notes. My favorite of this flight, it seems at peak and should hold.

  • Shockingly youthful. A skeptic would probably say this was counterfeit, since it was just too young and ripe and vibrant to be older than I am. Incredibly solid wine that didn't fade. Not mind-blowing, but clearly a very well made wine to have held up for so many decades.

  • This bottle was of excellent appearance, purchased from Acker at retail, although the ullage was slightly low at high shoulder. The color was typical for age when I first decanted it, but by the time it saw some air in the glass at the restaurant, it seemed darker. Is that possible or just an illusion? On the palate, it started out as a typical '70 Mouton, deep of cedar, cassis and blackcurrent, intense but narrow in spectrum. But over the next couple of hours, it became more mellow, less tannic, more complex and displayed a wider spectrum of flavors, from blackberry (rather than blackcurrent), hint of vanilla and cinnamon. Less severe, more supple. The battle between the '66 we had alongside this bottle was amazing to watch, smell and taste, since with time, this '70 was more pleasing and arguably (almost) overtook the chameleon-like evolution of the '66.

  • Cork almost came out clean, last part broke, but was easily removed. Wine was clearly past its prime. It was thin with not much of any taste. Not unlike a modest table wine at this point.

  • Fill was base neck; the cork was well saturated but sound, and came out easily enough. A very lovely ruby-garnet, with some amber at the rim. A heavenly bouquet, offering up complex scents of ripe red fruits, fennel, lavender, forrest floor, and black truffle. Medium-bodied on the palate, with an elegant texture, generous character, and a long, complex finish. A sublime (and fully mature) claret.

  • ERI Pre Auction tasting (Union League Club, Chicago IL): nose: good power behind this with melded tones of black cherries, perfumes, rose petals, loads of dark red fruits and some bright red fruits. Not as expressive as the last bottle that I had tried, but this was a very interesting nose that belied the age of the wine

taste: tart feel with medium/low acidity and resolved tannins with a good helping of dark red fruits, perfumes, rose petals, and bits of tobacco leaf working its way underneath

overall: not as good as the last bottle that I had, but still very good. Well evolved and in as good of a place as it can be. Good classic Mouton power and qualities with the red fruits, but this bottle had a different floral streak that I don't normally associate with mouton. Excellent medium feel that makes this a well put together wine

  • since i have never had a mouton before, i have nothing to compare it to, so i have to say that this wine was AMAZING, and possibly one of the best aged wines i've tasted! incredibly deep color for being this old nose was amazingly aromatic with lead pencil shavings, oak spice, plum and black cherry, mouth showed such fine balance of fine astringent tannins and acidity, with surprisingly abundant fruit and an shockingly long finish. paired with lamb loin chops was simply amazing.

  • This is probably '70 Mouton at its best. Good color with some amber/rust at the edge. Very black fruity. Intense fruit core at the center which refuses to fade even after a 10 hour decant and a couple hours at table. Not much tannin and the tangy 1970 vintage acidity is there but just short of excess. Really a very fine if uncomplicated wine and it seems it will last indefinitely.

  • Friends invited us to join them when they opened a bottle of this over dinner last night. Very nice bottle. The nose was very complex and nice. Licorice and earth are just 2 aromas that we could identify. The smooth and lingering taste was fantastic. This was truly a special bottle.

  • Consistent with the previous bottle, and from the same source, the '70 Mouton is an old-fashioned Bordeaux with a very intense cedar character dominating the nose and palate alike. High acidity holds it together effortlessly and even after 9 hours in the decanter and 3 hours in the bottle, there was no relaxing of this firm and sturdy wine. I don't think it's flawed exactly and I wish for more nuance, but I still find it a satisfying, not great, drink.

Good to go now. Nice finish revealing lots of forest fruits and herbaceous spice. The finish is very impressive with definite minerality present. Astonishing considering its age.

  • I bought this bottle a couple of weeks ago from AMC retail to fill up a box of my auction purchases. The relatively modest price for a first growth from a very good vintage is because of its (in)famous bottle variation. This bottle was mid- to high shoulder but otherwise looked sound. The cork was very moist and crumbled as I extracted it yet it held firmly to the glass. There was just a tiny bit of sediment, as noted by other tasters. At first there was no smell at all and the palate was extremely dull. I was tempted to toss it down the drain but I poured it in the decanter and hoped time would miraculously bring it back to life. And it did improve markedly after 6 hours of air although I would stop well short of calling it a miracle. As it warmed up, there was an attractive bouquet of blackcurrent and black licorice, not very complex yet definitely pleasant. On the palate, it was full but not rich. There was quite a bit of the telltale 1970 vintage acidity, just slightly too much for the fruit to balance. Yet fruit was vigorous and the tannin still present in the background. The more I think about it the next day, the more I like it, always a good sign. I don't know if this example was average, above or below so I'd like to try it again.

We had this the first evening of our stay; Nathan and Braden were fast asleep in the bedroom of our suite, so we ordered room service from the Fountain Restaurant! • Skinner Fine Wine Auction Reception (Boston, MA): Skinner auction reception. Light garnet with bricking at the rim. Nose of stewed dark fruits, leather, mushrooms. Palate of same. Essentially no tannins. Tired at this point but still has some hints of elegance. I still enjoy the thought of it.

  • A wonderful bottle of wine. Upon opening the wine was immediately poured into glasses. The wine had little or no sediment (slightly surprising for a wine of this age) and a beautiful, yet transparent red coloring with noticable bricking at the edges. For the first 20 minutes the wine was extremely closed in the nose. The palate was showing wonderful old bdx notes. Often times I feel that old red wine becomes just that, old red wine, but in this case the wine definitely represented a sense of place, that being Pauillac. With some coaxing the nose began to emerge with older red fruits, cedar box and black olives. There was a leanness on the palate but it wasn't out of place. I only had a couple ounces of this wine, so it wasn't something that I was able to watch develop over the evening, but I would happily drink this wine again.

2nd bottle in May 2006 compares with a beautiful label from Picasso 1973, same feeling... I prefer Picasso.

3rd bottle today along with 1964, 1973 and 1975 also the same feeling, earth, wood, mud, medium to full-bodied, earthy finished.

  • Unnumbered bottle bearing the "RC" (reserve du chateau) tag -- I wonder how it made its way to me? Here's a pure cigar box of a claret, full of tobacco in the bouquet, which also sports a funk of woody cologne and aged meat, as well as the palate, which segues from rich, smoky orchard fruit on the front end to an autumnal leafiness on the back. And it's no delicate flower. The fruit is still weighty, with plenty of tannin left to cradle it. The only thing in this bottle that was running out of time was the cork.

On the palate, quite structured and crisp, with flavors of dark fruits and aged tobacco. The finish lasted forever! I quite frankly was amazed (as was Nicole) at the amount of FRUIT character this wine possessed, particularly given that it had been in the bottle since before either of us were born! A grand vin beyond a shadow of a doubt; Nicole noted that it was her favourite Bordeaux to date. I still prefer the '71 Latour.

  • NobleRottersSydney - Bordeaux night (Darling Mills, Glebe): Bricklike colour, heading towards orange, with a suggestion of cloudiness? A nose of meaty beefiness, with liquorice and leather overtones. A soft, leathery old-wine palate, and an enchanting blend of still present acid, some soft tannins and mature old small-berry fruits, barely detectable. It seems unfair to try to pick out the components, as they blend to a beautifully smooth finish. The wine seems to somehow grow sweeter, just sitting in the glass, smelling different each time I go back to it. And although I’m no expert, surely it has nowhere further to go. Equally, it’s not just clinging on either, it’ll hold for a few years yet, I expect.

  • Tasted at vertical Mouton tasting at the Belgian Lion. Light somewhat dim, making color assessment difficult. However, it appears to be a deep ruby and shows a brick rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with complex aromas of leather, earth, plum, tobacco and chocolate. The palate follows with similar flavors and a moderately tannic but attractive, long finish. The wine seems to get better in the glass over 1-2 hours, despite decanting at least 45 minutes prior to the tasting.
