Very dark red plus color. PNP, drank a couple glasses over 2 hours plus. The nose starts off nicely with menthol notes, sandalwood, cassis, dried herbs and black raspberries. The palate is medium-full bodied, showing that elegant side, though not as much as other bottles from this vintage; wood, minerals, cassis, black cherry, cassis, graphite and still firmish tannins that do caress a bit more over the two hours. This is quite good, though it still benefits from somewhat generous amounts of air. 92+ to 93pts.

Chateau Angelus 1994 Drank direct from bottle after opening for 45 mins, with good brothers and nice cosy Chinese restaurant in HK. Wine of great age, ruby red, garnet purple with nice orange rim. Profound old barn nose, very leathery, old french oak, earthy, with asian herbs, star anise, mushrooms, cigar box. Rich palate, with silky smooth tannins and refine acidity. Complex characters with multi layers, evolving over each pour, rich mineral, chewy and meaty. Medium to full body with great length lasting close to a minute at finished. 95+ points.

Annual Tasting Group Holiday Party (St. Genevieve, Mpls, MN): Very dark red plus color, 3mm transition to clear. One hour double decant, drank a glass plus over 90 minutes. Tons of leather and cigar box, lovely fruits of cassis and purple berries, sultry and well integrated, oak spice, dried forest floor, beautiful and silken in texture. Geez this is good stuff. 95+ to 96pts.

Kevin's btl at our wine group's annual holiday dinner at StG who hit it out of the park tonight! Tim & St Gens team are such great host! This also impressed me tonight. Especially, the nose with its cigar ash but the palate was beautifully resolved & enveloping with lush mature fruit, sous bois, mineral and boundless lifted, elegance. Awe, aged BDX from hallowed ground 95+

At home with grilled steaks, tasted over two nights. Last tasted 2016; last bottle. Ruby-garnet, slightly translucent, just a hint of amber edge. Very viscous. Very pronounced, complex aromas unmistakeable for Bordeaux, with cedar, toasted French oak, cassis and plums. On the palate still plenty of fruit, mostly pure cassis, but with some moderate soft tannins which became more prominent in the long aftertaste, with a touch of bitterness. Overall a remarkable wine at age 28 from an unremarkable vintage. Time to drink up. Ric

20 Vintages of Angelus (1988-2015): All wines tasted single blind. A few observations and conclusions: It seems that until more recently, Angelus focused on late picking, big wines with too much extraction. Most pre 2004 wines we tasted did not show well and are drying out or already have. The younger vintages showed better but only time will tell if the 2004 to 2015 vintages will age more gracefully. An experienced Angelus collector mentioned a style shift towards more finesse right after the promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classe A with the 2012 vintage. It would have been great to include more of the recent vintages (we had only 09/10/14/15) to better understand when and to what extent that shift happened. Still, there are some very good wines with the 2010 being the WOTN (rated 96+ pts, the structuredness, freshness and purity of the vintage shines through), narrowly ahead of the 2008 (96pts, these 2008 right banks are singing these days and are incredibly fresh) as well as two wines with 95 pts, the 2005 (slightly closed but lots of complexity and no structural deficits) and the 2015 (showcasing the stylistic shift: there aren’t many 2015s out there that share the light- and airiness and perfect ripeness level and purity with their respective 2010 counterparts).
TN: Most expressive nose of the first flight with lots of fruit extract, ripe but fresh fruit, some candied notes but a lot of vegetal notes. On the palate this has drying tannins, lots of extraction. Clearly overdone and not much expression on the palate. Again lots of vegetal aromas. Too dry and no balance, to much acidity. No winner. 84 pts.

Angélus vertical (Fribourg): Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.
Tasting note: More mature and settled with earth and mushrooms taking center stage. But also a bit musty which cloaked the fruit and left you with a tired impression. Also not fully integrated, mouthcoating tannin and overall leaving you with a rustic Impression. Not a good mix.

Faded crimson color in the glass, showing some age. Aromas of red and black currants, saddle leather and tobacco. Medium-bodied with integrated tannins and flavors of leather and red berry fruit. Long finish. Excellent; another strong showing from a '94. (Doc)

Decanted at dinner in Asheville and the wine is remarkably dark and concentrated after all these years. Definitely benefits from decanting. Slight astringency but considering the vintage and age, really quite impressive

Chill Friday at a friend's (Pinnacle@Duxton): Classic Bordeaux nose old-school funk, tobacco leaves and cedar. Very intoxicating nose and on the palate it was drinking younger than I expected so I went for a 1990 as it showed similarly to previous good bottles of 1990s that I tried. Palate was a little green from the cool vintage but still had good structure. Unfortunately after a couple of hours in the decanter the fruit faded and the wine fell off a cliff.

Very good wine for an off vintage. I over decanted it and the wine went flat about 4 hrs into the decanter. Best course of action would be to decant 1hr max and then pour it back in the bottle. Better on the nose than on the palate as other reviewers have noted.

This wine is drinking beautifully now. The nose has minerality, must, forest floor, and earthiness. The fruit is sour cherry with medium acidity. The tannins are completely soft and approachable. Cigar box, tobacco, and earth notes are present. It is excellent. 96 points.
- Round 4h decanted - Nose: the nose immediately reveals beautiful dark fruity notes accompanied by ivy, some immature greenish wood. Other elegant aromas of vanilla, coffee, foliage, forest floor float in the glass. Beautifully balanced nose with dark chocolate also rising to the nose. Great concentration, complexity and incredible freshness. - Mouth: Beautiful vanilla plum with still present tannins, this is still young despite 26 years in the backpack. Also green peppers, vegetable notes, young wood, blackberries and tar. The finish is long and balanced (that's what Bordeaux is all about!). The greenish and medium ~+ tannins draw the aromatic diversity in the mouth a little closer. - The storage is outstanding, you can leave it for another 10 years.
96P in the nose and 93P in the mouth. After another 2 hours in the decanter the "Bordeaux melt" (we do like in drinkable wines). This will be really cool in a few years. The potential deserves 94P in the mouth after further aeration in the glass!

Best bottle (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein): Tasted blind. Decanted for about 1-2h. Clear, deep purple-garnet color. Clean, medium intense, developing nose with some speck, slight menthol, oak, fine spices, dark red fruit, some green pepper. Dense. On the palate very deep. High, a bit harsh tannin. Red fruit, some green pepper, medium+ acidity. A bit rough and green. Long, lingering finish. 92-93.

Tasted blind : Colour really dark , with only some little signs of age . Nose dark with earty tones , black berries , fresh tones of menthol and mint . Clearly BDX taste , but i thought left bank ( wrong ) . Taste getting more "drinky" , dark berries in the taste , too . Nice sweet fruit and acid balanced ( fantastic work from the Chateau for this tricky year ) , forced tannics ! and cacao in the after taste . Once again , for difficult years in Bordeaux ( tasted 1992 very good , too ) a superb choice for drinking . Because of the forced tannics and the dark colour , drink this wine during the next 10-15 years . 93 / 18 points .

Had this after Lafite Rothschild and Léoville Barton from the same vintage, all wines were double decanted 12 hours before dinner. Classical and very elegant Saint-Emilion. Red and black berries with only a hint of tertiary notes, on the palate focussed, good freshness, medium+ bodied and long finish, has still improved in the glass during the evening. Great now but will stay for many years and may even further improve (95-96).

Cult Wines (Jason's House): This was the consensus WOTN...but how can you go wrong with an aged Bordeaux from such a prestigious chateau? This was my first Angelus, and I was pleasantly surprised. Although I had high expectations, the wine was coming from a less heralded vintage, so my expectations were somewhat tempered. This wine did not disappoint!
The perfumed nose was something I could enjoy all night, and even commented that I understand why the nose on a wine contributes to the overall score. The perfume from the Cab Franc was sweet, intoxicating and was a perfect reminder Springtime, with Lavender, wild-flowers, red fruit and forest coming to mind while enjoying the aromas. On the palate, the wine was balanced and the tannins smooth as silk, there was a nice compliment of fruit (red current and cassis) to complete tertiary flavors of leather, lead and wood. The finish was medium (a longer one would have lifted this wine to perfection - or nearer to perfection!) with notes of stewed plum, prunes and a hint of sweet oak. A pleasure to drink...thank you Kevin!

"Cult Wines" (Jason's House): This was a pop and pour. On the nose, I got iodine, red fruit, plum, a tiny bit of funk, flowers, cassis, some leather and cigar box. The nose is just gangbusters. The palate started out hollow and austere. It managed to open up over an hour of glass time, but it never matched the nose.
This was the consensus red wine of the night, and a real treat.
As this was a "Cult wine" theme, we had discussion about what that meant. For this wine, we felt that it somewhat qualified due to James Bond et al having elevated this property to quasi-cult status. We also were all grateful to get to drink this, even if it didn't have cult status.

"Cult Wines" & a Few Others (Jason P's, St. Paul, MN): Very dark red color. Was open for an hour before serving; drank a glass plus over 3 hours. Wow, just another great bottle of this wine. Gret nose, very earthy, forest floor, leather, cassis, blueberry, violet, sultry, damp earth. The palate has leather, cassis, blue fruit, leather, lithe and integrated, gravelly minerality, saddle, and a 45 second finish. Outstanding - my and group WOTN. 96+pts and maybe better.

This wine is drinking amazingly well. Notes of truffles, herbs and dried blackberry on the nose. Tannins are fully integrated and there is still a nice concentration of fruit on the palate with plenty of supporting acidity. Finish is very smooth and long. Delicious!

Pretty much the same 2 years on. This time I decanted it, though. Deep black currants with iron and earthiness. Soft tannins and acidity made it go perfectly with filet mignon done sous vide and seared. Has 10-20 years left in it probably.

Solid but exotic... really nice for Bordeaux. Had it with a 94 baby...decanted for 1/2 hour the wine was great all night. Sweet black fruit hints of almond, tar, molasses, chocolate and then concentration as it goes down. Yum. This is what I want in bord-owe. Plenty of time. 93

Good nose, lousy palate. Big bouquet over delivers round blackberry, cassis, and currant with duty concrete and leathery nuance. Damp. The palate however is thin, linear, and metallic with no more fruit stuffing. Younger brother is from ‘94 which is a real challenge. The only three red Bordeaux I know I’ve liked is Mouton, and that is much better than this, although I would still say this is overachieving for the vintage. 89-90.

Excellent showing for this bottle. The nose is gorgeous and classic.Plum liqueur, cherry, leather, cedar and subtle earth.Powerful and dense on the palate, with full-bodied mouthfeel.Ready to drink now and while it will age gracefully for another 5-10 years,I don't see it getting much better than this.

Power. Dominance. Elegance. A wine that wrestles with you, tickles you and touches your sweet spots, all at the same time. Notes of redcurrant, raspberry, sweet cherry, covered by fine tobacco and cedar. Bright acidity still, perfectly at its peak right now with no room left for improvement. But screw improvement. When you're this badass, why would you want to get greedy?

This wine was flat out enjoyable and held itself up in a flight with the great 89 and 90. A bit more 4square, but had the signature flavors of angelus. It was well filled out just missed the exotic noses. Long way to go still.

A bit outmatched on this evening, this wine just lacked the interest and complexity found in stronger vintages. The nose was shy and reticent, with the fruit peeking through. One thing I love about Angélus is how well the truffle and herbs complement the fruit so well. This was not so with this vintage, as the tertiary development seems stunted. Light on its feet on the palate. Showing some age with its garnet color and lightened edges. Noticeable tannins but lacking a bit of freshness on the finish. On its own, this was a nice wine that still provides pleasure. It will just never achieve the heights of vintages such as 1989, 1990, or even 1995.

Quite deep crimson still. A little reticent nose on opening then black currant with tobacco and dark earth. Has good body and mouthfeel with fine tannins. A really nice mature feeling right bank style. Could work with some beef or pork dishes, but we had it with a rustic mushroom farro soup and they suited one another just fine.

Leather, tobacco, dark stone fruit, a bit herbal at times (oregano, maybe a bit of anise), it took some time to round out after opening, filling out the mid-palate nicely, softening into a beautiful mouthful.

During a Commanderie de Bordeaux tasting dinner. 1994 is one of those lean vintages that took a long time to come around. Now that they have we, to my surprise, have many not grand but certainly decent wines. This was one of them. Nose of dark fruit, some gingerbread and pine notes. Medium bodied mid mouth. Firm but not drying tannins. Nice, drink up.

Dark black currant, herbal, spicy nose with immediate toasted oak character. Rich and concentrated fruity mouthfeel with surprisingly grippy tannins that really provides balance to the wine. Great dry spicy tobacco dark fruit length. Some wierd out of place coconutty nuance at the end. Cant believe its a 94. Solid effort.

The last bottle from my original case. You were fun while you lasted. The nose, with its floral, cherry pipe tobacco, earth and hint of truffle was quite nice. The wine has good concentration of flavor. On the palate, there is sweet fruit, soft textures, but the finish is a little dry and there is a distinctive green, olive note that takes away from the overall experience. Splash decanted, I am sure the wine will last another decade, but it is not going to improve.

With grilled ribeye. Still dark and opaque, with just the slightest brick at the edges but no browning. The aroma immediately very pronounced, deep cassis with toasty French oak, a bit of tobacco and black pepper. Typical Bordeaux nose and flavors, though it seems more a Left Bank than Right Bank style. Without food, the tannin slightly prominent for the fruit, but much better with the steak. Leftover the next night was actually better! Ready to drink. Ric

Wines 10 years and older (including a 59 Lafleur) (MP's): We let this sit for a while in the glass to open up. A nice showing. Not a great vintage, but this seems to be at peak but not past. Purple in color. The nose has cherries, cassis, slight cigar tobacco. On the palate, this is soft yet tannic. Nice black cherry fruit with bit of dried brown tobacco. A very nice complexity here. A real pleasure to drink and it might have seemed even better if not next to the 95.

It has a marauding maroon colour and a luxurious entry of soy and cedar. Mouton-esque...then chocolate, mocha and spice notes. The entry gives the impression of an expensive and luxurious wine.
Don't be fooled! The palate it is surprisingly coarse and harsh, drying and bitter, with a nasty unripe aftertaste. It is quite puckering in fact. It seems to have a reasonable length on the palate, however.
Food - rack of lamb - masks this wines mid-palate deficiencies, and to be fair it is a pleasant accompaniment to rack of lamb, better that a 5 euro supermarket claret.
It staggers me how people seem to be sucked in by the pornographic entry to this wine, and ignore the deficiencies from a mediocre terroir. This is a wine that flatters to deceive. It only gets worse in future vintages. A wine to 'short'.
The fact that this wine got promoted to a St-E first growth is laughable. Pavie has a much better claim for FG status, if the manipulation stopped.

Dark red color. Decanted off of moderate amount of fine sediment. Aromas are on the leather/tobacco/leaf end of the spectrum with plum, vanilla, and spice showing with time. On the palate, this is lean and has all of the elements the nose shows, but without breadth. Tannins are mostly resolved at this point. A nice wine that I enjoyed drinking. If current value is accurate, there are many other things I'd enjoy more for the same price of entry. Drink or hold.

Drank for my daughters 21st Birthday. Big group younger folks mostly so everyone had a glass. Wine opened tableside and poured and drank. The wine was dark ruby and had a perfumy floral nose, with some hints of forest underneath. It was very nicely balanced with dark berry the predominant taste, enhanced with some chocolate and spice. Lovely wine and made this special celebration fun.

An elegant wine, drinking at its apogee. Aromas and flavors of black cherry, cassis, tobacco, chocolate, cedar, spice and oak. Soft, velvety, rich and full bodied in the mouth. Nice balance. Tannins are fully resolved and integrated into the wine. Hard to tell how much longer this will last, but it's drinking well now.

Fantastic. After being disappointed by some 2nd growth St Juliens on last few occasions this right banker renews my faith in Bordeaux. A veritable flower bomb of aromas consisting of chocolate, wood and vanilla in the glass. The palate was so smooth and silky even from the get go without need for decanting. Wish i had more which I would have had if anex-gf hadn't drunk almost my whole case out of spite. Well at least she did leave me one - bless her.

Another fantastic bottle of this. There's a flamboyant and exotic flavour profile with dark chocolate, fresh green herbs, smoke and floral elements framing a core of rich red and dark fruit, and on the palate there's a remarkable combination of power and finesse, with great intensity of flavour and a graceful, polished texture on a medium weight frame.

As usual, bought upon release and stored properly. Deep nose, with quite some freshness and wood, of course. After two hours of airing, it reveals itself as a great wine. Some evident tannin, just like many Italian wines. Beautiful fruit. and length. It is a truly superb wine which has years of life ahead.

Occasional dinner group; TOP Bordeaux 1994: Beautiful bouquet, a bit rustic, good oak, spiciness and some bell pepper. Same on the palate. Good acidity and a bit sticky tannin. An immediate wow from the aromatics, such a spectacular fragrance combining layers of rich fruit, developed tobacco and cedary notes, and more flamboyant chocolate, spicy and smoky elements. There's similar depth and complexity on the palate, but what's really striking is the sense of sheer finesse and elegance to the texture, with the tannin fully integrated and a really polished, almost glossy mouthfeel. Fantastic.

Tasted blind in the series w/ Leoville las Cases 1998, Cheval Blanc 1994 and Figeac 1990:
Deep red, shows first sign of ripeness. Nose of leather, tobacco, herbs and currant. Lots of tannins. One feels the power of this wine but I am somewhat sceptic if there is enough fruit left to handle the tannins of the wine. Time will tell.

Right Bank Bordeaux Tasting; 4/27/2013-5/5/2013 (Kevin's House (Minneapolis)): Wonderful nose but the palate is not complete. Funk, tobacco, pencil lead, red fruits and blueberries impress on the nose but the palate is a bit thin and hollow. It picks up a bell pepper note on the medium finish. A ton of sediment on this wine which was decanted 3 hours. Hold for now and hope the palate develops. 91-93.

Big Bordeaux V: Stars of the Right Bank - St. Emilion (including '96 Cheval, '98 Ausone and Pavie, '90 Troplong, '98 d'Yquem and more) (Rocknroller's (Kevin's)): Very dark red color with some bricking. Decanted for 15 minutes and drank 1 glass over 3 hours. This was clearly the stunner of the night. This baby was right in my wheelhouse with everything I look for in a great Bordeaux: mature, fantastically perfumed nose, earthy, elegance and finesse. WOW did this deliver. The nose is incredible, perfumed, violets, oh so floral, funk, earth, graphite. I figured no way can the palate come close to that nose, well, I was wrong. The palate was fantastic too, full bodied, elegant, rich, velvety, cassis, spices, graphite, minerals, black cherry. Fully mature, perfectly balanced and well integrated this was my WOTN and NOTN. 96+pts

Super Bowl 2013 (Cumming, GA): Dark core with 1/2" bricking; youthful, raw meat nose, tobacco, ash, tart berry; luxurious mouthfeel, hinting at a sandy soil, sexy and toned. By far the best example of this bottle. I even thought it could improve with some bottle age where other bottles were very ready.

Year-end "James Bond" Party (Chad's, Chuville): Absolutely delicious on the night, this was a lovely example of a right-bank from 1994. It had a beautifully aromatic nose, with fragrant wafts of cigar smoke and tobacco leaves, sweet capsicum scents, cassis and plums, all on a bed of damp undergrowth and a touch of meatiness - lush, lovely aromas. Quite a few of us picked it up as an Angelus given the theme for the evening and on that lovely nose alone. The palate was telltale 1994 though. It was a lot cooler and leaner than the nose, with fresh, bright flavours of black cherries and cassis on the attack, a touch of plums on the slightly light-weight midpalate, and then a long finish seasoned with sweet spice and tobacco notes lingering away gently. Obviously not from the strongest vintage then, but such a delight, with the slightly chewy tannins of youth softening nicely, and the wine showing lovely integration. Delicious – this was just drinking beautifully at the moment.

Decanted 1.5h. Excellent, barely stained cork. Dark garnet almost to the thin translucent rim. Rather muted nose with dark fruit and some barnyard. Medium body but with very dense fruit on the palate. Also slight, bitter note unfortunately. Still medium tannins and a medium finish. 91-92 Reminds me of the 94 Cos, and not surprised to read later on that both Chateaux were early movers on reverse osmosis to create more concentrated wines in weaker vintages. Not really my style of wine however, but not your typical St. Emillion either due to the high percentage of Cabernet France. An impressive, austere piece of hard work which lacks any sort of elegance to my taste.

Fully mature and starting to fade, there is some soft, red fruit, earth, herbs and spice. But the tannins are slightly rustic. I'd drink this over the next few years as it's not going to improve and will probaby continue to decline. It's a good effort for an off vintage.

- Ruby color. It's in total harmony with a medium/full body. Smooth texture with a long finish - Excellent bottle of wine...drank with dinner 12/29. We decanted at the table so we enjoyed this wine through an amazing lifecycle. Even with the age and vintage it showed tremendous life, with early tannins giving way to vibrant fruit and a long finish. Not a Bordeaux guy but drank this with someone who is and has drank with the owner of Angelus. Even he was amazed at how good this bottle was. A memorable drink, I'll never forget how this wine changed over the course of our dinner.

Performed very nicely for an "off" vintage. Showed more towards the black fruit side of the spectrum, seemed more Left Bank than Right, with graphite and iron amidst the black currant fruit. Smooth on the sides, still some tannins left. Surprised by how youthful and unevolved this showed - while it has lost youthful plumpness, this is not showing much in the way of secondary development. I would have expected an older tasting wine, especially from a lesser and less ageworthy vintage. Not a blockbuster, but solid and enjoyable. Thanksgiving at our house, 2011.

Got better and better as the evening went on. Decanted, then poured back into the bottle after a little over an hour. Slight bricking to the color. Initial nose all sweet fruit -- too sweet, in fact. Morphs into a more classic Bordeaux nose, taking on secondary aromas of anise, a little earth, etc. Same deal on the palate -- first too sweet and awkward, but opens nicely. Significant dark chocolate note on the palate as it opens. Ended up very smooth; finish is lengthy.

This is in a good place right now. Not especially complex, but elegant with lots of fruit on the mid-palate. Loads of sediment, so really needs to stand for a week before serving. Not likely to get much better from here, but still many years ahead.

Tasted at a walk-around Super Bowl party. The bottle was kindly provided by Mike Christensen. Deep garnet robe with brick rim. Clean and very intense, perfumed nose, showing lavender and coriander highlighting a core of black fruit. Medium-to-full-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity and soft residual tannins. The flavor profile mirrors the nose, with just a bit of greenness around the edges. The middle palate is full and the finish quite long (and fairly smooth). Very nice overall, especially for the vintage. Drink now-12/16.

I plan to drink 1995 Imperial bottle but only 4 people can confirm so I change 6.0 Litre to be 1994 magnum and other wines.
Not in a good mood...Anyway, the wine is a little bit young, delicious, easy to enjoy, full-bodied and strong in its structure with a good impact finished. This wine is always great but not my type. When I realised, I still have 2 cases mixed of good vintages.
I want to drink both of 2 Imperial 1995 very soon.
Drink now - 2025...............92-93+/100..................

94 Angelus with two hours of air offers smoke, truffle, licorice, chocolate, plum, earth and coffee scents. In the mouth, while full bodied and concentrated, when the wine hits your palate it starts off with licorice, chocolate and ripe plums, but moves to some green flavors and dryness in the finish. This is a nice wine. I'm happy to own it as it cost about $30 on release. But I would not buy it for the current price. You're much better off picking the 01 or 04, which remain well priced examples of this chateau. 92 Pts

From 375 ml bottle. Nose: Some sweetness lingering nicely with just hints of sewer and cigar box. Beautiful tones of pine but also some blood and iron. Palate: A powerful structure but more dry than would be expected compared to the structure. Classic cassis, black currant flavors but it does seem overly packed with dryness, perhaps mostly from oak. Still a young and pretty wine.

Colour: deep red, little sign of age / brick on the rim, clear. Nose: cherry, blackcurrant, aniseed, licorice. Taste: Blackcurrant, warm smoky finish, medium to full bodied. Conclusion: very nice wine, possibly at the start of a long descent as was hoping for a bit more fruit. Great with food.

We liked this wine a lot, but nowhere near met our expectations. I am hoping this particular bottle was just off a bit. The last we had I rated as a 94 a year ago... hopefully then next will meet that level. This was thinner from front to back and very light on the nose. May just be sleeping.

Drank two bottles with a group of family and friends over the course of one evening. Powerful nose, a cocktail of dark fruit on a bed of hazelnuts and some almond. Tannic attack at first, reminding me of a much younger vintage. Opens up after one hour to remarkable smoothness. Quite a mouthful. Length is amazing. Medium big character. The most fascinating thing about this wine are the many facets it develops over the hours: tannic, fruit, wood, smoothness, fruit again. My favourite in many months.

Angelus lived up to its reputation. Dark red fruit, cassis, with charred wood and undergrowth complexity, maybe even some dark chocolate. The palate was very structured and balanced. Tannins are still notable but nicely offset by the strong intense fruit flavours. Long finish. Kept getting better in the glass as the night went on. As enjoyable as it is now I would give it another five to ten years.

Intial pour: smelled of wet autumn forest floor on a dark and cloudy day, a bit of barnyard. but that blew off fairly quickly. After 30 minutes: very pleasant but was concerned that the fruit had faded. Tasted a bit thin. But after an hour the fruit came out and became a bit heavier and more "rounded" and ?complete?. Dark chocolate and dark cherries with lots of violets and crushed red roses and a bit of leather. Minty with a bit of toasted oak. I could taste the sunshine on a warm summer day in the right bank. After 1 1/2 hours notes of white pepper and stonger tannins. Overall, very elegant, very French, very St Emillion. Sophisticated. A good day to be alive!

This wine its starting to hit its stride. Dark brooding garnet color remains. Loads of fruit, crushed blue berries, dark chocolate, violets, slight herbal and vegetable notes. Very nice considering the vintage. The weight is excellent and has a great mouth feel from good balance. The fruit and structure work well together. The tannins are fine and long lasting. 93 points

Dark red to rim. Nice rich forward nose of dark fruits, cassis, cherry, leather, roasted meats, and a bit of cigar box. Very full-bodied, muscular, even brawny palate feel, still pretty tannic but not at all bitter, wtih plenty of rich deep cassis fruit and some of the complex leather and tobacco characters coming forward from the nose. Finishes strong. Drinking well now, has the fruit to hang in there with the tannins and make old bones. Excellent-outstanding.

This bottle was clearly a step ahead of the two I had opened in the previous six months. It was the nose that set it apart! Dark in color with some bricking at the rim, however I have to admit that the steakhouse was not well lit. Beautiful nose of tobacco, sweet roasted bell peppers, leather and hint of chocolate, but it the tobacco that stole the show. On palate, it had pure dark fruits, cherry liquor, smoke, and tobacco. What a treat with GlennK while he was in town from London

Wow! Amazing aromas, very classic old school. No decant needed. Medium bodied with nice acidity. On the finish this just explodes complex fruits and one finds themselves standing and just thinking for a minute after each sip. It's not the most concentrated or ripe Bordeaux, but very classy and well balanced.

Thank god for Cellartracker. Knowing when a wine reaches its 'plateau' is extremely helpful, especially if you only have one bottle tucked away in your cellar. I fully agree with the most recent notes on this wine. This is extremely good stuff, and drinking perfectly right now. Everything is in the right place. Cigarbox, tobacco, red fruits. Very focussed and long. The tobacco notes become too much after 6 hours (left a third of a glass for a couple of hours). This is a STELLAR wine. 93 pts

Deep purple color. Classic old bordeaux nose. Bitter cherries, dry tannic flavors of tobacco, cedar. Opened up after a half an hour into quite a nice wine. This the 4th bottle of 94 Angelus in 9 years and it has gotten progressively better. Decanting really helped this wine from the initial presentation.

Like a number of '94s, this was better than I expected, and still has considerable life. Dark ruby to the rim. Tobacco, cassis, cloves on the nose. Medium-bodied, nice balance. Dried cherries, currants, pipe tobacco on the palate; has a pleasant edge and complexity to the finish.

Bordeaux Tasting at Cafe Levain: Nose: Dark fruits with some ink and scorched earth. Palate: Still amazingly youthfull tannins. Dark fruits but tight and closed. I think this wine was not decanted first and could have scored higher with more aeration. I have always liked Angelus.

This wine wins my "best Bordeaux 2008-prize" - and that is in competition with Las Cases 1990, Gruaud 1990 and a lot more. I am stunnned by this wine from a "bad" vintage. The nose offers a combination of the freshest forest fruit with some mature tones of forest floor and a hint of saddle. The taste is even better - it is pure silk with a huge aftertaste. Complex, fresh and just wonderful.

Casual Dinner at Le Titi -for an out of towner (Le titi de Paris): WOW! I had this wine before and I never remember it being this good. In fact for the exception of the 89/90 this one proved to be my favorite. It was like walking into a spice rack. Soft and elegant with power and balance. A great wine in a tough vintage. The merlot in this wine is settling into a fantastic place. It may even improve but no reason not to open now as it was just so enjoyable. 94+

John Chapman meets the three Headed Monster (Le Titi Paris(Arlington Heights, IL)): nose: sometimes homer simpson just gets it right when he says, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Yea, the nose is like that, so succulent and so expressive. The 94s have really started to come into their own on the nose from what I've had, and its a pure pleasure. Dulcet tones of roasted herbs, dark cherries, loads of spice box tones, with deft tones of cassis and cedar box
taste: supple and smooth with roasted herbs, cedar tones, spice box, loads of red fruits, dark cherries, and rich cassis tones. Lots of depth on the palate that belies the preconcieved notions of the 94 vintage
overall: this is drinking in a beautiful place right now. Quintessentially Angelus in all its glory, this is just a beautiful wine no matter which way you slice it. Pretty and elegant depth on both the nose and palate while still being a bit precocious, this is a wine that is just drinking great right now

For a "weak" vintage this is truly an impressive wine. Decanted in the bottle for 90 mins prior to consumption. The nose jumps at you with sweet tobacco, casis and hints of toasted oak. With time and aeration the palate is full of dark berries, indian spices and smoke with a finish that lasted well over 50 sec. truly a gem.

Inky, ruby color. Blackberries, vanilla, coffee and licorice scents are easy to discern. Nice palate presence. Tannic, but not fully ripe fruit. Mostly black fruit on the palate. The wines personality is on the austere side. While it has decent weight accompanied by some concentration, the austere, tannic nature stops me from loving it.

It's hard to make a statement like "I love Angelus" when I have only had a couple of relatively poor vintages of this wine. The 1997 and now the 1994. Having said that, I love Angelus! What a great example of fine wine craftsmanship this is! Color is still quite a dark violet tinted ruby red with no signs of age at all. The nose has a lot of fruit mixed with leather and mineral notes. Flavors seemed to be a little bit tight at first and after some time in the glass everything exploded with rich concentration and length. We didn't decant this wine but probably should have for about an hour. I can only imagine what great vintage of this wine must taste like. Fortunately I have a couple of other bottles from 95 and 2000 so eventually I'll get to find out.

This is my first experience with Angelus and if this is what is consdiered a "bad" vintage, I think my head will explode if I ever have the chance to have a good vintage. Exactly what you would expect from a St Emillion, meaty, herby, and earthy flavors mixed with blackberries, currant and blueberries. Considering its age, it is holding a ton of fruits and is still pretty tannic. Excellently structured and complex. We had this one with several other fabulous wines and this didn't just hold its own, it shined. I think having no expectations about this wine really allowed me to keep my mind open and just let the wine speak for itself. I had trouble doing the same for one of the other wines we had and I think my experience suffered for it. None-the-less this is a fantastic wine that will definitely lead to trying to have more from this producer.

Opened an hour before dinner but not decanted. The color remains quite dark and really little to no lightening on the rim. Smoke on the palate and some cedar. The wine remains rather primary. Many murmurs that "now, this is a very nice wine" despite the somewhat odd pairing w/ cornbeef and cabbage for St Patty's day. JMQ says time to drink up but does not seem urgent to me. There is not a great deal of fruit as in a riper vintage (perhaps more would have come w/ time in the glass) but that was expected and might be the only criticism.

Decanted 90 minutes. Dark reddish violet. Lovely nose full of dark and plummy fruit with loads of interesting and expressive 'non-fruit' notes on both the licorice/spice side as well as the cedar/tobacco/earth direction. Palate is 'efficient' rather than captivating, however. Medium weight fruit that is not as layered in the mouth as the aromas set you up for; drying tannins and nice acidity. Worked well with leg of lamb.

Popped and poured without decanting, drank in a Burgundy Riedel Sommelier line. The colour is bright red ruby with pale rim and youthful signs. The wine is immediately polished at the nose and improves constantly in the glass. It exhibits an explosive aroma of cherry, plum, roasted herbs(oregano, thyme) pencil lead, black pepper very elegant with the oak perfectly integrated with the fruit, this is a burly wine. The entry is soft with smooth and silky tannins, ripe fruit, round perfectly balanced The persistance is amazing, very long, really impressive.Angelus 1994 is a ready drinking but can be cellared for many years yet.Great stuff in the bottle!!!!! The 1994 is a decent vintage for the right bank,I'd say excellent for Angelus.

Very dark purple and I thought still quite youthful. Decanted as we sat down to dinner and probably would have benefited from more aeration. Tastes of ash and tea a certain level of rich fruit but some restraint and in many ways tasted as much of the left bank as right. Certainly not a big merlot fruit bomb, but then again it's a 94. A very pleasant drink and great pairing with the steak

Bought on futures and perfectly stored, this seems to be nearing the edge of plateau. Garnet rim with red fruit, tea, and a smidge of cigar on the nose. Fading after an hour, yet very enjoyable for it's seamless fruit, leather, and pencil shavings notes on the palate that still has reasonable length.

Excepcional.

Inky purple in color, nose of smoke and pencil lead. The palate reveals subtle berry fruit, asian spice, and currant with a hint of secondary earthy flavors and finishes with dry smooth tanins. This was decanted for 2 hours in the glass -- the wine was quite closed for 90 minutes before coming to life. I think this has just reached maturity with another decade and a half of life to anticipate.

I agree that this is a "tour de force in winemaking". It is quite an accomplishment in an off year like 1994. This was my favorite Cab of the night at Otis' on Saturday. It was a perfect match for the mustard coated roast leg of lamb Otis cooked (and he even made sure I got a nice rare piece). It was also the 1st wine I went back to for a refill after my 5 Cab blends were done. Dark blackish red color (slightly darker than the 4 other wines in my opinion). It had an old world earthy aroma with hints of dried mushroom. notes of leather and dark fruit filled the glass in this integrated wine although I agree with Otis that this will age a while longer and will improve. Firm tannins and a long complex finish. 92 points.

95+ points.

Tasting note:
More mature and settled with earth and mushrooms taking center stage. But also a bit musty which cloaked the fruit and left you with a tired impression. Also not fully integrated, mouthcoating tannin and overall leaving you with a rustic Impression. Not a good mix.

- Nose: the nose immediately reveals beautiful dark fruity notes accompanied by ivy, some immature greenish wood.

Firm but not drying tannins. Nice, drink up.

Reminds me of the 94 Cos, and not surprised to read later on that both Chateaux were early movers on reverse osmosis to create more concentrated wines in weaker vintages. Not really my style of wine however, but not your typical St. Emillion either due to the high percentage of Cabernet France. An impressive, austere piece of hard work which lacks any sort of elegance to my taste.

92 points.
