Magnums of the 1987 Mayacamas are still showing some of what have likely always been this wine's best qualities: delicate floral aromas, which add intrigue to aged fruit notes of stewed sour cherries and black plums, and a mid-weight structure that glides seamlessly across the palate to a respectable, only slightly drying finish. Though past peak, well-stored large format bottles will offer considerable pleasure over the next few years. Plan on a 45+ minute decant: ours needed the time to plump up a bit and for the remaining fruit to come into balance, after which it held steady through the rest of a very enjoyable evening.

[Good fill level] Balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, dried red and black fruit, leather, saddle, jerky, plum, white pepper. Still very grippy tannins adding to the structure, but the finish is a bit lacking and fruit shows a bit tired, albeit still complex and definitely a great showing of tertiary notes. Overall, wine is complex but losing freshness and is fading. Enough structure to hold, but will not improve, so drink up! 89 pts

Tasted single blind in a lineup of 1987 California cabernets. Fresh herbs, baked fruit, a slight nutty character, all relatively muted and unexpressive. Pretty on the attack but sour and drying out, extremely tart and out of balance. We speculated on whether this wine had been overly acidified. Massively disappointing.
