Fuller-bodied than I expected with a round and smooth mouthfeel and tasty flavors of smoky black fruits with a lick of violet spice. The finish is layered and concentrated but it just lacks the wow factor of some other bottles tonight. At Napa In The City.

From a perfectly stored magnum, double decanted three hours ahead. Some browning and a ton of sediment, both as sludge and coating the sides of the bottle. Excellent while decanting, but super-delicious after pouring at the table. Pretty astonishing how good it was after almost 50 years... big, smokey Cab flavors, some raisin but a wonderful CA masterpiece!

Still shows old school with rugged structure and leaner fruit, but plenty of Bordeaux-esque complexity with dried cedar, bell pepper and pencil shavings.

(Mayacamas Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Mountain) Dark red violet color with pale meniscus; mature, plum, berry and truffle nose; tasty, youthful, berry, plum palate; medium finish
(Mayacamas Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon) #1; COLOR-dark; really substantial for a 74; NOSE-very earthy; a little mint action; some pepper and venison (Bordeaux-like); clear blackberries; PALATE-this wine brings serious thunder; classic; great length; total beef jerky action on the mid-palate transition to the back-end; great, great bottle of Cabernet; this has another 10-15 years in it; great structure; great black currant; gorgeous length; everything you would look for in an all-time great Bordeaux; this is just spectacular; a world class effort; WS-92 & 97; GV-94+

A 1974 Napa Retrospective (Zunfthaus zur Waag Zürich): Out of magnum, unfortunately completely dead due to an issue with the bottle. What a shame.

Very good wine with nice red fruit but not a lot of complexity.
