  • Nose is of fresh plumb. The wine itself has a lot of finesse, more akin to a Medoc than a Napa cab, but is beautifully balanced, despite the young age. Very fruity, primarily red berries followed by moist earthy soil. Tannins are silky smooth. It is drinking beautifully right now, but I imagine with this structure, it will only improve over the next few decades.

Decanted and consumed over the next several hours.

  • I rarely drink Napa Cabs as they are comparatively expensive in Europe, so take the following with a grain of salt. The wine was part of a blind-tasting with three wines from Bordeaux, all from vintage 2016, and I did not only mistake it for a high quality Medoc, it was also my favourite among wines, which turned out to be Domaine de Chevalier, Latour a Pomerol and Sociando-Mallet.
It is the Mayacamas, which has the most precision on the nose with crunchy red berries, also some darker berries and beautiful earthy and spicy notes. Riper, but quite similar to the Sociando-Mallet, which showed its characteristic green streak, and not dulled by new oak like the DdC and (to a lesser extent) the LaP. In the mouth the wine is medium-bodied but full of flavours, it is hugely structured, very fresh (more so than the DdC and the LaP), impeccably balanced and showed great persistence on the finish. The wine is not shut down and can be enjoyed now if you are not too sensitive for some tannin and rough edges. However, this feels like a true vin de garde and I expect it to improve over the next five years and keep 15 years thereafter. Very impressive and I would love to own some bottles. 94+

  • Currants, cherries, flowers, sandalwood, vanilla, menthol, and crushed gravel. Light/medium-bodied, classic, and focused -- one might be worried about the concentration at first. However, I liked its liveliness, deft use of wood, and it certainly leaves no want for impact on the palate. Finishes with tobacco, red fruit peel, and suave tannins. The wine certainly fills out the next day, and I believe it will continue to offer much enjoyment for many decades to come.

  • Can't tell is this is oddly shut down? I think this wine should have been far more exuberant than it was showing. Must try again.

  • Accidentally opened this, thought I grabbed the merlot of the same vintage. Opened too young.

Really good on day 1 with slight vegetal and concentrated red fruit. Day 2 was a little washed out and muted but still delicious. Typical of 2016, it's lighter and more feminine red fruit compared to other recent vintages, slight red licorice essence. Seems like it has the potential for substantial aging and refinement.

I wish I hadn't opened my only bottle this young!
