  • Drank at home

As a lover of HB, the weight of the palate was a supreme disappointment on this occasion. Having had the Ch. Margaux ‘85 a week before, this was not comparable. The nose: too smoky. The palate: too thin. But there is so much loitering that means business which makes me think I might’ve had a slightly subpar bottle. Though that, in and of itself, is a shame, it does mean there’s reason to believe the next bottle of this mighty wine might will shine through.

  • On a night of some truly magnificent wines this was among the less impressive ones for me although many enjoyed it more than me. I can't say it was faulty, but perhaps I just miss the seductiveness of the vintage here. A good wine indeed, but the Margaux 1985 (97) next to it was so much more my style of wine.

  • Had this again for the valentine’s day this year. After decanting for 1 hour, the wine opened up beautifully. Similar to my comments below, the wine was super aromatic with minerals, spices, modest tar, violets, and gravel, the texture was very silky and smooth yet with firm tannin and nicely balanced acidity, its great acidity, opulent fruits, modest spices, supported very long finish.

  • 4th bottle from the case - all have been sound.

I'm not a big Bordeaux drinker or fan and I have found the younger vintages in particular (of most Bordeaux) to be far too ripe and alcoholic for my tastes, edging on some of the displeasing characteristics of most of the Cabernet based wines from Napa, with a few notable exceptions. And in this sense, I've enjoyed the 1985 over the 1989 as I think it has that extra level of elegance over pure fruit and extravagance that lend the latter much deserved accolades. What is so captivating about this vintage is the mineral aspects of the wine that really are 'out there'. And then you get the sensations I have noted before: nose of cedar, dark cherries, violets, herbs. On the palate, dark fruits with focused and complex acidity, gravely minerals. And the upshot is how much it evolved, rather than improved, over the evening.

  • Spot on. Fully mature, no signs of ageing, but just mouthwatering, complex sweetness of fully integrated tannins. All secondary notes of leather, tobacco, cinnamon, cloves and truffles firing on all cylinders now. A great wine in a perfect space.

(Chateau Haut Brion) This is just a sexy bottle of wine that is in such a good place right now. Huge fruit, opulent palate, great crisp acids and a killer finish. All the Haut Brion character you could want but in an easy way. Great fragrance on the nose. A bottle could be finished very easily of this due to the sensational lithe yet heavy texture. I lked this alot.
