  • Lovely smoky black fruit makes this wine quite alluring along with interesting flavors of warm asphalt and coal dust. Chiseled in style with plenty of acidity yet beautifully layered with a refined, silky texture. The finish perhaps lacks some complexity and power but there are still some crisp tannins and more smoky minerals. Aging so well with plenty left in the tank.

  • Wow, did this perform well last night in a group of top Italians. Layered and smooth with cool black fruits along with notes of black pepper and eucalyptus. Lifted and fresh with good balancing acidity and a lovely touch of charcoal smoke on the finish. Will last a long time but drinking beautifully now.

  • I agree with others that this wine smells like Northern Rhône (black pepper and meat). I’m less fond of the tangy, raspberry paste palate.

  • This is stupendous. Schioppettino is always a high-performance grape in my experience, but the 2013 Ronchi di Cialla is definitely the best example I've ever encountered. Aromas of dark cherry, blueberry, raspberry, seared steak, cracked pepper, violets, wild mint... the peppery and meaty qualities are intense yet beautifully integrated. Balanced structure, it is supple and smooth, with velvety tannins and fresh acids, and a gorgeous inner perfume of flowers, peppercorns and cherries. Myriad meaty, spicy and ripe fruit notes linger long on the finish. Meat pie vibes. This is surprisingly open and easy-going. Sure to be worth following another decade or two.

Holds up great on day two, still fresh and fruity, a little less peppery, a little brighter and more floral. What a wine!

  • If you like the lifted and high-toned style of the best reds from Northeastern Italy, this is hard to beat. It has the texture of a classified Bordeaux and the flavors of Cote Rotie. Not every vintage from this address performs at this level but the '13 is a world class effort.
