  • 2004 Bordeaux at Blacklock, City, with NLWTS (Blacklock, City): Quite dark in the glass. Pretty glossy and the fruit is at a lovely stage of development. Tannins pretty slack at this point. Very friendly wine.

  • Bordeaux 2004 20 years on Part 1 (Blacklock City): This came across as very very claret, with all of the cedar, pencil lead, old school desk nature of Bordeaux. It’s got a good amount of funk as well, some proper barnyard in the mix. I found it a little lacking in the fruit department, perhaps a bit thin (though delicate might be a nicer way of phrasing it) and perhaps more in-line with my understanding of the vintage, but overall this is a nicely poised bottle that delivers just what you want from Bordeaux. I gave this my third spot, I really enjoyed its traditional appeal.

  • Jonathan's 2004 horizontal (Blacklock City): A nice contrast to the Leovilles and its flight-mates, being light on its feet and rather delicate in character. Clean, leafy and drinkable, with a menthol note on the nose, and (based on my prejudice, if not tonight's evidence) more of a typical 2004. Just what was needed with the steak course. My #3 tonight.

  • Tasting properly mature. An old school claret. Quite fine, even thin, blackcurrant fruit, much more in the way of dead leaves, fireplace. Well proportioned, classical, very enjoyable but for me I think it will become increasingly frail and it is now time to start drinking up unless you like very very old claret. But I increasingly think people fetishise age in old wines, they're not at their best just because they're old, and I think this is now headed into that territory. At time of writing only 39% of those bottles held in community cellars has been drunk, frankly I think that's ridiculous, how long are people going to wait?

  • In the realm of fine wines, where artistic mastery meets the divine flavors of the earth, one name stands tall, reminiscent of legendary tales and the quest for perfection: Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste.

Picture this: amidst the rolling hills of Bordeaux, a bottle of their renowned 2004 vintage awaits its moment of revelation. As I, the incomparable Ernest Hemingway, renowned wordsmith and connoisseur of the finest things in life, embark on this poetic journey of the senses, let me intertwine it with the enchanting presence of an equally celebrated character—a well-known grunge musician who seeks solace in the depths of sound and flavor.

As the crimson nectar cascades into the glass, I took a moment to appreciate the hue—a rich garnet that mirrors the passion and intensity of their performances. Swirling the wine in the glass, the fragrances evolve, awakening memories of both love and longing, much like the depths of their lyrics that resonate with countless souls. The first sip, taken with reverence, unfolds on the palate, revealing a tale of complexity and grace.

The musician's lips meet the glass, and as the liquid graces my tongue, the symphony begins.

This was a great wine, but needed to wait....maybe 2035, but what the hell right?
