12/19/2020 - WildeMeeuw Likes this wine: 92 points Kleur: Diep donkerrood.. Geweldig lange afdronk. Algemeen / potentieel: Ik blijf me verbazen over de drinkbaarheidshorizon van Robert Parker. Tot 2022? Absoluut. Tot 2032? Ongetwijfeld. Maar tot 2072??? Nog 50! Jaar???? 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Smaak / Afdronk: 17 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 92/100

4/10/2021 - wchrisw Likes this wine: 92 pointsMagnum. I had a big build up for this wine as I started prepping for it 2 weeks ago. I went to my wine storage facility to stand bottle upright on 3/27 to let any sediment fall. I opened it 4/9 with ah-so opener in anticipation of drinking 4/10 so I wanted to do a slow ox for a couple hours before recorking and then decanting following day. Cork broke. Took a sip after 30 minutes to check it out. It was still very lively. Next day deanted for 5 hours. It didn't taste 19 years old at all. Classic Monte Bello minerality, "weightless" as those at Ridge say, cassis, good acidity, could still go several more years. Bottle threw no sediment. Wine was great however I was expecting something more.

7/18/2020 - Nicephoras wrote: NRA blind, but again, my bottle. Decanted for about two hours (which it needs). This is a big wine, with serious heft. On the nose, this has more of the white fruit that I associate with Puligny, but the body is rich without ever suggesting the richness comes from oak. Next to a PYCM Perrieres, this was probably the bigger wine - this comes close to grand cru weight. (The guesses were all Puligny or Meursault.)

11/12/2020 - Misology24 Likes this wine: 91 pointsI'm bad; opened far too soon and knew it while pulling the cork and decanting for two hours for a special occasion. Clear, medium garnet color. Dry, medium acid, medium(+) tannin, medium(+) body, medium(+) alcohol. Still developing. Medium(+) intensity aroma and flavor with characteristics of black cassis/black currant, black raspberry, tobacco, anise, cedar, chocolate, leather, and wet stone. Medium(+) finish. Can drink now but has potential for aging. Quality level is very good. My recommendation is to leave cellared until at least 2025. That said, a very nice wine!

5/14/2020 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRI had this bottle 9 years ago at a restaurant and it was one of the first truly great wines I had; fun to be able to try it again; served with beef tenderloin and red wine reduction; the nose initially showed a fair amount of oak, but with 30 min in the decanter this resolved and the nose became more balanced; creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, a subtle hint of bell pepper, vanillin notes from the oak, violet, and just a hint of mocha. The palate is absolutely silky with filigreed tannins, ripe voluptuous fruit, and well judged acidity. Despite the density of the flavor, it does not feel heavy at all and there is not really any noticeable heat. A long finish rounds this out perfectly. A great example of ripe (but not overripe) Napa cabernet from one of the best producers. This still seemed very youthful to me at 15 yrs of age and really is still not quite at peak. Should provide another 15-20 years of stellar drinking.

4/29/2018 - Keith Levenberg wrote: NRThis is a cool wine to know about for folks like me who can see something appealing in the idea of Chateauneuf-du-Pape in theory but end up hating the taste of actual Chateauneuf-du-Pape in practice. The grape here is alicante bouschet, a genetic relative of grenache, and it has a similar warmth and heartiness but thankfully only a more distant resemblance in terms of flavor, none of that candied kirsch. It is still seriously rich stuff that calls for a winter stew. It combines red and black berry flavors with a minerality reminiscent of metal shavings and a more developed leatheriness that gives it a more Iberian feel. I'm told this is one of *the* signature dry reds from Portugal - first time I've ever had one so I can't evaluate it in that context or say anything about how it might develop - but I'd kind of hope it can mellow out a little because winter-stew nights aren't the norm around here.

2/2/2016 - SMHalps Likes this wine: 90 pointsBrought it to a pizza party. I thought it would show better, but I did open it a day after it arrived via cross country shipping. Not bad, just seemed a little thin. Not as much fruit as I was expecting. Maybe the next bottle will be better. I haven't had the Ciel Du Cheval in years. I usually only get the Champoux, which I always enjoy.

(we did drink soon after receiving the shipment)

4/5/2014 - WaWineWill wrote: 91 pointsDecanted briefly. Enjoyed over the course of an afternoon and evening. Bouquet of black fruits, smoke, sweet earth and hoisin. On the tongue -- plum, cassis, macerated cherry, fig compote, smoke and molasses. With more time and air, roasted meat, iron and tar notes emerged. There was a touch of heat that never really seemed to mellow, nor did the somewhat tannic finish. Guessing this needs more time in the cellar, and with the lovely flavor profile potential, this is a good thing.

9/14/2012 - mflesh wrote: 93 pointsEnjoyed tonight at Del Frisco's in Fort Worth. Wine was uncorked to a dark red stain with zero bleed. The wine was decanted. Some was poured into the glass. The wine had a very herbal and brambly nose, with some flint, minerality, leather, smoke, and an herbal kind of component, rather dusty. I'll start reviewing the wine after it had been opened for 30 minutes. The wine was, from start to finish and even after opening, very elegant. Soft, full bodied wine. On the palate was a blackberry fruit front with maybe some young slightly ripe plum, trending towards a creme de cassis and some dark chocolate mocha, but had a very interesting flinty, rocky component that would sometimes show itself. Finish was leathery, spicy with food, but rather subdued without. The best thing about this wine was that it went with Italian marinated shrimp, a salad with an avocado ranch, steak, creamed spinach and broccoli and each one of these courses showed a slightly different side of the wine. The shrimp showed more of the mid and finish. The steak accentuated the spice and the front. Overall quite a treat. Thank you to the Sangiovese component! This wine is still fairly young. Definitely don't agree with the 2014 community "drink by" date at all. Drink now with decanting, or hold for probably up to 5 years.

Some are lighter, while others are bolder. If you are interested in Littorai, their wines are available on their website mailing list.
