I'm an unabashed Baudry fan, but was a little disappointed with this. I've usually found this bottling restrained, light, and red fruited, so I was surprised to find the opposite in this 2018. It pours quite deep ruby, heavily purple at the rim. Inky and opaque at the core. The nose is quite heady clearly showing some if it's 13.5% alcohol. The nose is purple and black fruited showing blueberry, violets, blackberry, and quite a lot of blue and purple licorice. The nose on this could be confused with a Cotes du Rhone. The palate is a touch bitter and tart, with medium acid and tannin. The finish is on bitter berry seeds and a whiff of alcohol. A well made wine but not my preferred style. I have a case so we'll need to see what happens with these as they age.

I suppose if they end up being a bit of a disappointment, at the price I paid they'll be much easier to swallow (or cook with). Hope you and yours are happy and healthy. Cheers!

Off the list at the country club, decanted fir thirty minutes. Deep purple crimson color with notes of currant, blueberry, balsa wood and herb notes. Dark fruit and cassis on the palate, with vanilla and mocha finish. Well-balanced, with good structure. An excellent vintage for this wine.

6/16/2021 4:39:00 AM - As young as it is I don't know that there is that much more to coax out of it. A few years in the cellar would be much better, but that said, the fruit on these '18s is really nice. This was a last minute decision when I had to change my entree selection from fish to beef, and the list of cabs at the club isn't great, save for the little bit of Montelena they have tucked away.

This in particular was very tight so my note was from later in the evening when I went back to retaste after this had gotten some air. There may have been half to a third of the bottle remaining at that point, I don't recall, and it might have been only an hour or two later.

Decanted for about 30 minutes before drinking with grilled burgers and then drank over the course of 3 hours. Aroma is tobacco, tar, cigar box and blackberry. The taste has some oak and tobacco; the fruit is actually quite light and not quite as prominent as I would like This is very much in my wheelhouse for Cabs, but the fruit is just a bit lighter than I would prefer I to be.

From magnum, courtesy of R&D, popped and poured with supper. Inky opaque color. Aromas of cassis, chocolate and vanilla. Tannic and oaky, with flavors of chocolate, black fruit and tons of barrel toast and vanillin. Tannins have a chalky feel. I expected a bit more class in this vintage, but in this format it's still all about the wood.

4th Saturday Group: Global Cabernet Sauvignon (Our house): Blind. Notes of herbs and dark fruit with a hint of the citrusy grapefruit thing common in this wine when young. Made it easy to pick out as our wine. Medium tannins with flavors of dark fruit and eucalyptus. Needs a couple of years yet.

  • Comment posted by AllRed:

    12/9/2019 12:12:00 PM - Hi, Rollerball.

By double blind, I mean that I did not know the wine's identity. This bottle was ours, so I knew it would appear in one of the flights somewhere, I just didn't know where, so I tasted it "blind."

For this particular group, each taster brings a bottle in a brown bag, which we group roughly from light to heavy. Then the host often times mixes things up a bit, so even if you were to bring a "lighter red" and set it at the very front of the line, it would most often get mixed in somewhere in the first flight as opposed to being the first wine in the first flight. We occasionally have themes, e.g., foreign cab sauv, but that would be our only advance knowledge of what is being tasted. I still consider that double blind since we don't know anything but the variety, excluding one country.

So once the wines are arranged/randomized, we break the bottles into manageable flights (no more than six to a flight) and spend 20 minutes or so tasting the flight. We then open group discussion on the wines and flight at large, before narrowing it down to the first wine of the flight. We have discussions about that wine and we make our guesses as to what it is and it is then unveiled. We then move on to the second wine in the flight and so on.

It's fun, especially because we learn each others' palates and when someone guesses correctly, they explain what tipped them off so we learn what clues to look for. It's a fun, education and humbling exercise.

Hope this all makes sense and answers your questions.

    Cheers!

In my cellar since 2007, probably a couple years after release and purchased from WTSO. Back in the day this got relatively low scores because it did not follow the fashion then in its height toward super ripe, heavily extracted, high ABV Cabs. This was delightfully “old-school”. I double decanted around 3pm to take to a friend’s house to have dinner around 7:30pm. Totally fresh, with no bricking whatsoever. Tannins fully integrated but still has some vibrant acidity. Wonderfully smooth texture. Fruit leans to the red berry spectrum with some earthy and leathery accents. Strong mineral sensation in the background. Nice balance. It was a little less evolved than I would have hoped. The secondary flavors were reticent and there were no notable tertiary accents. Still surprisingly primary. It was just a step or two behind in complexity. This may still get there so, no real hurry to drink these if stored in a cool cellar.

Planning to give it roughly the same treatment, though I may leave it to decant for a while once I pull the cork and assess where it’s at. Cheers!

Dan's Birthday (Keens Steakhouse): Quite oaky on the nose, with a lot of sweet, creamy vanilla and only a little yellow fruit. It's not sweet in the mouth because the acidity is good, but there's not much fruit and it's strangely dilute, and it's a terrible match with oysters. A couple hours later the last pour from the bottle is much better, showing more concentrated spicy pear and a nice mineral crackle, but it's still nothing especially remarkable and I don't quite get all the hype here.

If you let it go it will show more brioche and orchard fruit and less citrus, and the minerality will soften. So it depends on what you like. I have three left I think, so you and D will certainly taste it again. I guess I'm saying open yours within the year and drink ours thereafter. :)

4th Saturday Brown Bagger (T&L's): Double blind. Opens with a ripe raisiny note, and it's a touch hot, but there's also some nice dark plummy fruit underneath that follows through on the palate. Fairly well-balanced, it's got structure but also an abundance of good dark fruit. I'd rate it a bit higher if the raisin notes weren't evident. Medium+ finish. I believe I guessed Napa cab...I think one taster (RG?) did pick it out as merlot.

  • Comment posted by AllRed:

11/27/2019 5:35:00 AM - For me, the raisin notes are very distracting and I usually have a hard time getting past them. However, the raisin on the bouquet here was subtle, and did not follow on the palate so for me the wine overall was fairly enjoyable. I agree though- I am not sure I'd hold much longer, if at all, if I owned any. Mt. Brave is usually not something in our wheelhouse so we don't purchase/cellar these wines so really don't know how well they age.

The Labegorce was interesting. I thought I detected it when I pulled the corked and began decanting so I called my wife over to check it as she is highly sensitive to TCA, and she didn't pick it up. It was there, on and off, to the point where I even questioned myself as I returned/exchanged the bottle with the retailer the next day. TCA, as you know, usually gets worse the longer the wine sits, but this was still only slightly evident the next morning. In any event, I have a fresh bottle to open and check (likely to happen 12/14 at a party where several of the group will be present again) though this time I am going to decant for 12+ hours rather than 6.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, cheers!
