Old Aussie pinot can be a crapshoot but generally not with Ashton Hills who deliver more often than not. Great colour (magenta centre), voluminous nose of berry/undergrowth and in the groove mature pinot New World.Mature but not tertiary, smooth but not low acid or gone. Resolved but still present tannins via slight furriness of tongue. Medium to long finish. And this isn't even the best they produce or that they produced that year. Time to consume if you have in the cellar.

A wonderful wine in its own right and fine exhibition of a distinctive slice of Australiana’ for the wine world. Last tasted in Kuala Lumpur in 2017, tonight it followed on the heals of a lovely, mellow 2010 Clonakilla O’Riada Shiraz.

Pronounced bricking receding rim to a garnet, mahogany core.

The nose speaks of its age. Sticky date pudding/Xmas cake, cardamom, amaro bitters, raspberries and plums, smokey Russian Caravan tea (ex oak?) hints. If you want to know what complexity looks like, the aromas here give the answer.

The base wine comes from venerable Wendouree Shiraz vines. This smells older than the elegant 2010 Wendouree Shiraz, partly to do with it being Wendouree ‘seconds’, mainly to do with the different making methods.

Equally satisfying palate. The art of making sparkling red lies in judging the dosage just right, to smooth the edges without straying into perceptible sweetness. Many are called but few are chosen when it comes to striking the right balance. This wine does. It’s plush and savoury. Good line. Leathery hints suggest it’s time to drink up, before it starts drying out.

No complaints from me on that score. My last bottle is in the line of fire. Great value when bought (AUD35-40), the price is now AUD60. Still good QPR but it makes you think of other top tier spkg reds (admittedly AUD20 more or above). But that Wendouree source fruit does make you want more, and like Pooh Bear, just a drop more and more. No Backsons here.

Full marks for complexity. A chameleon of a wine. One sip it's savoury shriaz with green notes, next it's medicinal (throat lozengers).

Quite an oddity.

Negligible fizz. Noticeable dosage.

Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Executed to drink like Beaujolais. Savoury crunchy cherries and some Campari action. Decent acid and plenty of light and mild tobaccan tannins.
Great for spring/summer drinking. Can be served with a slight chill if necessary.

Drunk at dinner at Luma (Playford) in Adelaide.
Light red. Screwcap.
Light, fresh strawberry fruits, on the dumb side. Requested a carafe for a rough decant. Much more fruit expression with some brambly complexity emerging.
Palate showed the same strawberry fruits but was quite flat before the decant. After the decant, it showed much better middle palate structure, greater complexity and length and showing a little raspberry component. It still is on the lighter side but the more time it sits, the greater the emerging complexity. It’s easy to dismiss this on first impressions but that would be a mistake. Needs several years to begin to express itself. In Burgundy parlance, it is in the GC frame though with some Chambolle lift, good Villages. I have it in my cellar. I will give it 4 years minimum from now.

10th MW Symposium, Wiesbaden - Day 4: Alcohol 13.0%, 0.0 g/l residual sugar, 5.8 g/l acidity, 3.5 pH
Vineyard: The Ashton Hills Vineyard provides the fruit for the majority of Ashton Hills wines including single vineyard wines in the Reserve Pinot Noir, Estate Pinot Noir and Riesling. As custodian of the vineyard for over 30 years, Stephen has harnessed the three key climate variables (humidity, temperature and rainfall) he believes are critical to the Ashton Hills site and developed a reputation for producing some of the finest wines from the Adelaide Hills.

Nestled in the Piccadilly Valley, the Ashton Hills vineyard is climatically different to the rest of the Hills, being significantly colder and wetter. At one of the highest altitudes in the Adelaide Hills the vines shudder through some of the coolest growing conditions in the country, with rainfall a whopping 1200mm a year, well over double that of the Barossa Valley. So whether it’s the lifted perfumes and elegant structure of the pinot noir or the crisp purity of the riesling, Piccadilly Valley’s bona-fide cool-climate imprint is a feature of the wines.
30+yo vines. Yield: 35 hl/ha

Soil Type: The geology of the Piccadilly Valley consists of pre-cambrian sediments ranging from 1,600 million years-old calcsilicates to 700 million years-old phyllites, shales, sandstones and quartz-rich strata. The soils are podsolised duplex, sandy to clay loams and the geology is from either Woolshed Flat Shale, Basket Range Sandstone or Barossa Complex.

Harvest Notes: Reduced yields from the 2022 harvest were the result of poor fruit set due to a cold spring. This turned out to be a blessing, with a cool summer pushing the majority of our harvest into the last week of March and early April. Ripening of the small berries and bunches was long and slow which has resulted in wines with intense colour, flavour, concentration and structure.
Vinification: Grapes were handpicked, keeping individual clones and vineyards separate in small open fermenters. Some whole bunch fruit (24%) was added to ferments, enhancing aromatics and structural complexity. Fermentation was initiated by indigenous yeast (wild ferment) and each parcel was basket pressed directly to seasoned French oak barriques and puncheons with full solids. All barrels were kept on lees to build palate weight, body, texture and complexity. They were racked and blended just prior to bottling.
Maturation: 12 months in French barriques, mostly older
Oak influence: subtle Months in bottle: 3

11 years old but holding up very well - comes across as half its age. The balance of the discernible acid, fruit and tannin indicates this will be good drinking for at least a few more years. I sensed the slightest hint of bitterness, but not enough to detract from the experience.

This sparkling Shiraz is very rustic and reminds me of a VineCrest Sparkling Shiraz from the Barossa (2006). Deep and dark in colour, with fine bubbles, it is one of the very best in this class. There is hay, rust, old leather and dry clay soil. Nice medium weight and fair length, it sits well on the tongue. Looked forward to subsequent pours during the tasting night.

NB42 TASTING

Black on pour. Deep robe. Medium body with a very fine bead. Not at all sweet, this is all about perfectly ripe Shiraz fruit, pepper spice, and the red earth and iron of Clare Shiraz. Better just below room temp, colder it lost some detail. Very good, but young. Needs some more time for the leather notes to emerge that make this wine such a unique and unusual view of Australian wine.

Look again in 7 years, this is still a pup.

Oh wow, at a beautiful place - soft spritz, honey lemon marmalade, citrus florals. Beautiful development (no kero) but dry hessian and dry honeysuckle blossom, somewhat beeswax on the finish. Great acidity, lifted and rounded, impressions of sweetness. Enjoyable! The screwcap is certainly keeping this remarkably youthful!

Oh wow, dark honey amber in glass. Dry salted kamquats, dry honeysuckle blossom, reticent hessian/hemp, with noticeable lack of kero. Still-structured acidity, more dry citrus and hay, with dried fruit, and non-descript white florals; cramy. Savoury and mineral finish. Certainly well developed, past prime, but still interesting and keeping balanced somehow. Lacy saltspray finish, fresh in an inky way. Paired surprisingly with Jap ncod-strips. Good for a late night convo.
