Consumed for #tawnytuesday with some good friends. Dark crimson in color. The color reminds me of an aged sangiovese not a 10-Year tawny. Fairly simple but very enjoyable nose of raisins, chocolate covered cherries and cola. There was an initial note of funk, almost like a plastic medicinal note, but that blew off with some air. On the palate, lots of chocolate covered cherries and cola. Very smooth mouth feel. This was quite nice.

Purchased for $25. Served in a Riedel Vinum Bordeaux Glass (that's right, not the Port glass). Dark amber in color, almost ruby in hue. Another straight forward tawny. Nothing complex here with notes of raisin, nuts and caramel. Definitely some strong VA on the nose. Sweet palate, simple. Juicy acidity, alcohol in balance. Short finish. A definite notch below others. Grade: B

Non-blind from half btl.

Nice 10 yr old Tawney. Typical nose of dried fruit, caramel, sweet toffee and raisins. A bit of acid on the finish which helps keep it in balance. Absolutely lovely with lobster. The richness of the lobster and butter pair perfectly with the Tawney. It was a great deal att auction for $6 per bottle. Should have bought the other lot as well. Next time.

Similar comments to SSGIBSON. Taylor is our go-to, and this was in the ballpark, if not better. A head to head is needed. It didn't seem as sweet as the Taylor, yet maintained a similar level of brawny power. Note that I am FAR more impressed with the Fonseca 10 yr tawny compared to the 20, especially when comparing it to the benchmark of Taylor. For sub-$20 this is an easy rebuy.

We're working our way through the "standard" 10 Year Tawnys. Taylor is our usual go-to port. The Fonseca is a bit "brighter," with a candy apple finish that hints at a ruby port. Tim thinks he may like it better than Taylor, but would like to do a side-by-side at some point. I'm content to simply add the Fonseca to our lineup for a change of pace.

Deep, bright aromas, very complete. Loaded with dried figs, dates, plums, orange peel, walnut shell, and lots of spices. Smooth, round, and silky, bordering on glyceriny, showing good depth of flavor, a nutty richness, fine length, and none of the alcoholic heat you get with some tawnies. Has an appealing tea-like tension and mulling spices on the mineral finish. Just lovely.

Nutty, with roasted pecans coming to mind. Plum, fig (fig newton?), raisin, prune, caramel. An inviting warmth on the finish. Really enjoyable, but points become limited based on assumptions of aging potential and complexity with further age. Also have the 20 year tawny to compare, and look forward to seeing the difference in a 10 vs. 20 year from the same house.

Paired with Roquefort cheese. Same good sensations as ever. This Tawny 10 yo has class, complexity, depth,...terrifying quality here. Deep cherry colour. Typically Port nose with figs, sandalwood, candy shop among many others. Sweet palate with a gliceric mouthfeel and a long aftertaste. Very close what I understand as a first row bottle. My sort of Tawny. Hardly can wait for that 20 yo.

I picked up this port so that I could compare it to Costco's Kirkland Signature branded 10 year tawny port, which is produced for Costco by Fonseca. Both that one and this one were bottled in 2008. In comparison, this Fonseca bottle was certainly a little better then the Kirkland, but unfortunately not by very much. The Kirkland branded bottle came across very thin and showed only a little bit of nuttiness and where it really failed was with the alcohol, which showed through at all levels and just wasn't very pleasant to drink. This Fonseca was quite similar but did show a little bit more complexity and depth with a more classic tawny port feel to it but here as well, the alcohol was quite prevalent throughout. At least the Fonseca is still good enough to be a decent everyday port. The Kirkland will become an ingredient. Of the 4 or 5 different 10 year tawny ports I have tried in the last month, these two are the bottom feeders.

Not very good. Bit of a sour aftertaste, its way after its peak. Dry also. The smell is still good. Colour is red with a touch of amber. Not my favourite everyday port.

Some Tuscans (Kungsholmen, Stockholm): Sweet, toffe, some heat, simple, but still quite good.
