Deep, youthful colour and the nose took a while to open in the glass, even though the bottle was uncorked 5h earlier. We got the earthy notes mentioned by others plus the blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, soft leathery tannins, tobacco, cedar, and oak that typifies Pauillac. Some spice developed over many hours The palate was big, rich, with spice and complexity. A long end palate (which my wife found had a rather idiosyncratic taste at first - probably the persistent cedar). I rather liked the way it evolved over time and retained the cedar/oak notes. These latter characteristics went very well with a rare fillet steak. After the food, the wine tasted softer. We kept some back and tasted the next day when the end palate was better balanced (I agree with FRANSS that the wine took a long time to soften, lose some of the wood, and bring the palate into focus). On the second day, the nose was less forward but the palate showed attractive dark plum flavours with plum skins and some liquorice but there was no sweetness in the fruit. It was very good but, honestly, it did not reach the expected heights. I would have been deeply disappointed had I bought this at the current online retail price. Like AlexB70, we had waited a long time since purchase to taste this wine. We bought it on holiday in France soon after release and it has been stored under ideal conditions at a steady 11C. The cork was perfect.

I have been keeping that bottle for a long time. Although very nice wine, we felt it was on the descending slope, nut just a little. However, we appreaciated it quite a lot, very nice nose, but lacking a bit of roundness in the mouth, leaving just a hint of wanting more. Drink now.

Confirming most of the recent tasting notes, but it took some days to soften this wine and to loose some of its wood imprression; than the balance between ripe dark fruit, wood, the citrus backbone, even some opulence, the concentration, the bitters and the very acceptable tannins was above expectation, considering the profile of this somewhat severe vintage; chapeau bas!

Super beau, un classique qui est sur son plateau. Fort bien équilibré. De la terre, du café, des fruits rouges et du cêdre. Les tannins sont fondus et la finale de longueur moyenne nous laisse sur un fond de graphite. Super bon.

Hawksmoor Monday (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Served alongside the 1982 - gosh, on the nose this is almost as gorgeous - proper clarety goodness. There's some spring forest floor along with the cigar box. On the palate - super vibrant, there's acidity and lift, and a delicate mouthfeel. Hugely enjoyed this.

Dark garnet color with purple hues, medium to full-bodied, very aromatic, the fruits erupted from the bottle as soon as the cork, in perfect condition, was extracted. Expressive but only slightly austere blackberry and black currant fruits with classic Pauillac tones tobacco, creme de cassis, earth, spice and hints of cedar turning to moderate tannins and a bright fresh tangy acidity. https://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2022/01/pour-boys-wine-dinner-features-dual.html

Further to my Note of Jan 5, '19; this is #3-ish. Solid cork. Decanted with somewhat light sediment for its age. Dark purple; ripe blackcurrant, black fruits, some graphite that follow on the palate, very good mouthfeel; some persistence. Gained some complexity over the 2h meal. Delicious, glad we have more, wish we had even more. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement and then a basement locker since purchase. My evaluation (see earlier posts for my 4-category, non-point rating system): This is outstanding- when considering quality, age, and price.
Rote Beeren, Graphit, etwas Schokolade, erdige Aromen, etwas Zedernholz; am Gaumen mit mittelkörnigem Tannin, feiner Säure, mittlerem Abgang, nicht zu komplex.

30 minute decant. This wine did not seem completely resolved, at least next to a 1989 Cantemerle. The tannins are silky, as is the fruit. Cedar, sweet red to slightly blue fruit.

Really enjoyed this pauillac. No decant but poured an hour or two before drinking. Initially polish on the nose maybe leather and pencil but developed earth and farmyard during evening. Sealed and drunk most night two. As good.

Cellared since purchase in 2008, consumed over 2 days (vacuvined), note from day 2. Nose: Medium expressiveness, red fruit - raspberry, tobacco, pepper, and shoe leather with floral overtones. Palate: Medium-full bodied, spicy dark red fruit attack, leather and tobacco notes appear mid-palate, nice mouth-feel and balance, earthy notes appear in the back-end. Finish: Lengthy, but subtle, 45-60 seconds, leather, tobacco, earth, and spicy dark red fruit. This is sneaky good, great balance and complexity, just lacks the oomph that you find in a great vintage. Well worth the $25 investment in 2008, drinking well now and has the stuffing to go another 5+ years.

Drank over a few days- with no time for a formal tasting note- overall very good, but not great example of this cuvee. Textbook left bank Bordeaux in what I believe was a so called "off vintage"
Lots of cassis, tobacco and sweet vanilla.
Medium bodied with enough acidity remaining to keep fresh. Medium to medium plus finish- so overall well done. Just lacks the complexity of better vintages.

Further to my TN of Nov 22 '18: Tried this with a pork loin braised with black grapes and a touch of balsamic vinegar. Before taking a bite, this was was on its way to a repeat performance, but the pork was sweet: the outcome of the prep follows the sweetness of the fruit, and these grapes must have been sweet. All at the table were a little surprised (recipe called for adding sugar, but the chef had skipped that) at the sweetness, and that masked the wine--not a fair test, in my opinion.

During the year end Gala Dinner of the Commanderie de Bordeaux Hong Kong with Domaines Rothschild CEO Jean-Guillaume Prats present as guest host. Lovely wine here, better freshness that the 2009/10. Also lots of oak though. Having tried this wine now several times I conclude that this is a modern oaky Bordeaux of medium quality terroir. Hence, not worth shelling out 80 bucks for, there are more characterful Bordeaux at this price point.

W pork chop fried in cast iron. Really yummy combination. This wine shows good mature color coming from the bottle. In glas still youthful. Great nose and wonderful fruit on palate. Good bordeaux typical flavors - great finish. This will live quite a few more years but probably also in good place to really enjoy. Give it two hours in decanter

Bought a 12b case from Binny's 11 years ago for 27/b. Decanted with normal sediment for this age. Dark purple color; rich Bdx fragrance after 2 hours--mature red fruit, some lead pencil; very good mouthfeel, well integrated flavors; good finish. One of the best Duhart grand vins I've tasted. Shared over turkey dinner with some knowledgeable Cali table mates--EU-trained wine marketing prof, local boutique wine bar(s) owner--who gravitated toward this and another Bdx ('08 La Dame de Montrose) relative to some local gems. I found it delicious and satisfying. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation: I've stopped giving scores on a "100-point scale" as I've become less convinced that they can be meaningful to others. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. I considered this outstanding- when considering quality, age, and price.

2004, a massively underrated vintage due to its proximity to the so-called legends of 05 and generosity of 03. Truth is 04 was the driest vintage since 1964, and the wine are concentrated but not mouth-filling. Last of the old school style. They aren't easy to love. Like a weird crush, you have to appreciate the style. And so you should. Layers and layers without the obvious. A wine for those who like to think

Just decent for my palate. It has the currant and tobacco others mentioned as well as some green aspects which is one of the profiles that make it harder for me to connect with. Maybe I drank too young, but it seemed lean on night one and past on night two.

Starting to open and show nicely with a short decant, the wine medium bodied, fresh, lively and offers fresh, red fruits, earth, cedar, herbs and tobacco leaf. Classic in style, the wine was made from a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot.

Less evolved than other 04's and I think in general the Paulliac have lagged behind the right bank and Margaux in 04. PNP which was not ideal, much better the second night. Unctuous, thick on the palate, chocolate, cherry, cassis. Drink now or wait, both will be rewarded.

Medium to dark ruby with garnet hues. Very elegant and nuanced nose with capsicum, spice, tobacco and dark cherries. There are also some cedar notes inthe background. Excellent balance with fine grained tannins, capsicum and dark fruit well integrated oak and low to med acidity. The finish is somewhat short but in all, this is delectable and with quite some life ahead of it.

I was greeted with that classic Pauillac nose upon opening this cru classe from a Rothschild family Chateau. After an hour in the decanter the wine was silky, balanced and restrained. Not a blockbuster but a very pleasant wine showing much finesse. The 04's have definitely provided consistently enjoyable if not spectacular wines. Consumed with roast chicken.

Medium Ruby appearance with some lightening at the rim. Classic Cabernet nose- black fruits (cassis), cedar, balsam, spice and a faint bell pepper note. Medium bodied, good acidity and still some tannin. Still structured and I don't think will develop further. Lots of cassis and cedar on the palate and on a decent finish. Certainly not the most ripe or extracted version, but a great and delicious food wine and went well with roast chicken and herbs.
This will probably hold for another 15 years, but I don't think it will improve.

4th Saturday Group brown bagger (Mark & Rochelle's): My second time tasting this vintage and it is just as good as the last time. Aromas of black currants, plum, forest floor, iron and green tobacco with a terrific herbal overtone. Medium-bodied and aging nicely, the tannins have softened quite a bit. Plum, red fruit, iron and dried herbs carry through the finish. Long and balanced.

Westchester Wine School: Haut Medoc - Terrior & Vintage: Drank at WWS Haud Medoc tasting. Deep crimson/ruby color. Generous nose of red fruit, tar, & leather. The wine also exhibited a smoky quality, with very good length. Enjoyable wine.

I agree with Zweder’s tasting note. Thank you Zweder. I want to add different angle on our tasting experience: The wine was very balanced when 1. opened and during the drinking on the 1. Evening (most of it). On the 2. evening it was a shock of minerality and tannin. The 2. sip was better. My conclusion: Leave the remaining bottles another 5 years alone unless you want to drink it in 1 one evening. The wine has the aging potential it promised with the 1. sip on the 1. day.
Monthly Tasting Group LTB 2014-10; Bordeaux 2004 left bank from magnum. (By VD): The bouquet is a feast! Beautiful dark forest fruits, some pleasant barnyard, cedar, tobacco, sweet spices, coffee and beautifully toasted oak. Really complex and tempting. Same on the palate with beautiful acidity and soft and creamy tannin with still enough power for several years more, but in this case; why wait? The wine has entered its maturity stage and is in a beautiful stage now. I love it! 95 for tonight.
Wonderfully smooth wine when given ample time to open up. Initial pour was very tight and even bitter. However, 2nd pour 24 hours later showed a wine with great balance and integration of tannin with iron, herb, and pencil lead flavors. Good, lengthy finish - this wine is drinking well now when given hours to open up. Or let this age another 2-5 years for optimal drinking. Recommend.

At its finest, Duhart hints of the great bottle of silken perfume that is Lafite. The latter have truly turned around this estate in their own image. The 2004 is showing better but still lacks full dimension. In 375, the wine showd, after a half hour double decant, a nice medium core of cherry and merlot- led smoothness but there was an unmistakeable lack of complexity and finish that may be youth or the vintage. So I would hold, especially 750s.

WOW. This has matured into a wonderful claret. Enjoyed this with a Prime rib dinner with portabello mushroom reduction, which followed a Le Vieux Donjon vertical tasting (lots of family here today.) I was amazed how this stood out following the 3 Cdp's. Decanted 1 hour before dinner. Beautiful dark red. Some sweet fruit notes and eucalyptus on the nose. Cassis and dark fruit along with some chocolate. Med/long finish. Glad to have a several more up to 2008. Now out of my price range as of 2009. Too bad.

This half has aged well in the last year plus. Still needs decanting for a couple of hours. Even more concentrated center of very dark fruit, dome musty overtones, cedar, dry leaf hint, and focused. Too much tannin when first opening. Overnight in refrig with vscuvin much better.

Oh dear this is good. Exceptional nose of barnyard covered in freshly ground kona leaps from the glass. A layer of gravel and toasted oak provides additional nuance and depth. In the mouth this too is broad and savory with loads of espresso roast in the attack and midpalate, washed away by salty river stones. This doesn't have much (actually any) fruit to speak of, which bumps it down a few points, but I do sincerely enjoy it. Perhaps it could use a bit of sweetness to the tannins which while giving, have yet to subdue.
Drink this excellent cuvee over the next decade. 89+ -JRS

tried the 375 last night. as expected, the Lafite lushness and perfumey scent is present but less so than in richer years. Deep, rich middle--especially for Duhart-- no strong fruit on the nose, but in the mouth dark currant fruit, 3/4 finish; and after 2 hours od decanting still an alcoholic edge. Some green from the vintage is unmistakable but overall a nice wine for 2004. Needs more time escpecially in 750.

I just love Duhart - simply can't get enough of 'em. For me, this is the best bang for the buck going right now in Bordeaux. Barrel toast definitely shows through on the nose and the palate giving coffee and mocha notes. Still very primary but extremely smooth and well balanced. Great now, (hard to stay away) will be stellar in 15 years.

March Bordeax Tasting (Waterford Wine Company): Dark, garnet-purple hue with nice vibrancy. Ripe black fruits, creme de cassis, fresh tobacco leaf, mixed herbs, with a slight "funk" to the fruit. Medium body. Nice Pauillac profile of cuurants and cassis, unsmoked cigar, notes of earth and just a touch of green on the moderate finish. Mild tannins. At the beginning, with coaxing, a classic Pauillac nose emerged. Quite tannic, very youthful. A little bitter at the outset. That Duhart/Lafite cedar begins to develop with more air. The 2002 Duhart Milon is considerably more elegant than this wine. This wine has that 2004 nineteen-ninety-four-ness. The 2002 Duhart was better, but, in fairness to the '04, the '02 was out of kilter at age four as well. This just needs time. The 2004 Clerc milon is drinking better, though, at least right now. Rating: 89 points.

Herbal and a little stiff and angular. Certainly a much more classic profile than the 2003, quite a different wine in many ways. A real dark tobacco and tar streak but overall fairly light fruit. Like many 2004 Bordeaux, lacks a midpalate follow through. Long bitter finish. A nice wine, but not special. B/B-

Some spice developed over many hours
The palate was big, rich, with spice and complexity.

Also lots of oak though. Having tried this wine now several times I conclude that this is a modern oaky Bordeaux of medium quality terroir. Hence, not worth shelling out 80 bucks for, there are more characterful Bordeaux at this price point.

The wine has the aging potential it promised with the 1. sip on the 1. day.

89+ -JRS

(The wine looks Inky colored.
It smells like Toast, Espresso, Lead Pencil, and Mineral.
It tastes like Toast, Espresso, Mineral, and Chocolate.
The body is Medium.
The wine is textured Smooth.
The wine finishes Long.)

Medium red with a dominant earthy nose. Dark chocolate and tobacco with some drying tannins and a good amount of barnyard and earth. Matched very nicely with a fillet mignon. Split might be a bit more mature than the 750 ml.

Pleasant nose. A pale shadow of the 2003. A bit acrid, but pleasant enough.

Loads of espresso and coffee on the nose; all carries over to the palate.
Evolved to more traditional nose.
Really special stuff.
Well balanced.

Great Bordeaux with lots of complexity. Fruit, oak and earthy notes cover the palate. Medium to full body. Drink now-2020.

All-in-all, a pretty and soft claret that still needs 4-8+ years to show it's best.

Love the upfront richness, hints of espresso and dark chocolate. Serious fruit that does not dissappoint. A fair amount of oak and tannins which will lend to some mellowing over the years.

After 6 hours of decanting. Black fruit, slight oak, and subtle violets on the nose. Explosive ripe fruit on the palate with notes of flowers, earth, cigar box, and spice. Long finish. Still very young. Probably could have used even more oxygen (8-10 hours total). Wait a few more years.

Some 2004 Bdx at a Tasting in Mid-March: Earth , coffee and blackberry with replays of chocolate and blackberry on the palate. Slightly drying tannins but very dark and brooding. Almost new world. I liked it.

Deep garnet color. interesting nose showing florals and perfume with an intensity that follows through on the palate. Nice grip that will integrate well in a couple more years.

Good deep dark bitter fruit, lots of toasty oak, coffee, and a long bitter finish. A bit dry with chalky tannins. Nice weekday bordeaux.
