I love this champagne. It’s complex and a perfect example of this vintage. Restrained aromas of bread yeast, dried pineapple, dried apricots, candied ginger, brioche, and honey gives way to deep notes of lemon oil, poached pears, and sea shells on the palate. Marvelous energy and structure. Should be good for another 10 years at least. Tasted in both a Zalto champagne and a white wine stem, and I preferred the latter.

Quick Notes Series Drank from a magnum. Although the lovely brioche and white flowers are certain present in this vintage Champagne which is fairly nice, but I find that there's this bitter ness in the aftertaste which made this wine a little unbalanced. This is my second magnum so I think it's fair to draw a conclusion to this wine now. One should drink up as I doubt there will be more improvements from here onwards.

Quite golden color. Aromas of seashells, rye, butter, and some citrus. Lovely depth, although some oxidation are present. Maybe a hint of a downward development from here.
Drink.

Golden colour. Citrus, seashells and some rye bread. Deep and complex. Retain acidity and creamy mousse. Fresh red-green apples and hints of oyster shells. Long finish. a bit more oxidised than last and I would hence recommend start drinking up now.

Middag med A+N och P+H i Sundbyberg (A+N, Sundbyberg): (Disgorged in December 2005, 100% Chardonnay from Partelaines vineyard in Chouilly, dosage 3-4 gr/l) Lovely golden yellow colour with a mature nose showing baked bread, butter and dark chocolate and opens up with some herbal touch of licorice in a very pleasant way. Still showing a distinct green apples crispy acidity on the mature palate with a creamy mid showing lots of butter before some dried fruit takes over on the lengthy and intense finish. Lovely minerals saltiness on the lips as well. This is showing very well right now, but should keep for years to come. (Best 2016-2031)

2008 top champagnes - horisontal wine tasting dinner (Rest MG (kg arr)): Second 2008 horisontal champagne half blind tasting dinner. First time June 2021. Back then the vintage was extremely youthful. How is it now? An almost unbelievable development in just 2 years. As a wine enthusiast I must simply surrender. I was skeptical about the drinkability at this point for this extreme vintage. That skepticism was proven wrong. 2008 can definitely be enjoyed now. For me, it's one of my really great tasting experiences. And there has certainly been many... Add to that, the vintage is only in its initial stage of maturation and therefore still youthful but extremely charming and open. I really look forward to tasting the 2008 vintage once a year in the coming many years experiencing the tertiary notes develop. There was one outsider of the evening: We also tasted Legras 1996 against 2008. 1996 is one of my all time favourites. This time it was once again performing at an outstanding level close to extraordinary. I rated it 97+. Complex with clearly tertiary notes (ex. coffee) but not oxidised at all. Don't know how long this cuvee's drinking window is going to be. I have tasted it many times and have only once experienced a bottle which had pasts its best. Fortunately I still have a couple of btls and magnums in the cellar. Clearly better than 2008 (see my note on that one)

Drunk on its own before dinner. 12%. Disgorged 2009. Lovely bright deep rich gold. Very good mousse and nice strong fine bead. Brioche, citrus, fresh champignon, nuts, with some subtle sherry notes that add to its complexity. Needed 20-30 minutes to really open up. Lovely length, great balance with really fresh crisp acidity. It just kept evolving with ever more nuance. An excellent champagne in a great place.

My last bottle. This final batch was released in 2014 or 2015 and the wine could have been cellared for many years yet as the wine was completely fresh and one could be fooled into guessing 2008 or 2012 vintage.

Nose: Brioche, sugar cane, white flower Notes: Drank from a magnum. A nice nose with brioche and white flowers. Still quite energetic with a good amount of bubbles. It is getting more and more difficult to get vintaged champagne from the 90s at reasonable prices and conditions. The Saint Vincent was in excellent condition and it is quite a tasty and fulfilling wine. Given the amount of bubbles and the taste I would imagine this could hold on for at least another 10-15 years without too much problem. Drink: now+ Rating: 90

Gold Label. Felt quite young and vibrant. Initially fairly lean with fine mousse, citrus notes and some flint/oystershell. After 90 min in the glass, starting to open up with white blossom, almonds/marzipan and sponge cake. This particular bottle had far from peaked so I'll swing for the fences with my last one and try to forget it for at least 5 more years - ideally 10.

A couple old bordeaux's (Joe's house): This was a very pleasant champagne that is well resolved and is nutty. There are slight oxidative notes and lovely acid. This did not measure up to my expectation for a "tete de cuvee" champagne but was definitely serviceable.

(Disgorged in fall of 2006, 100% Chardonnay from Chouilly) Lovely yellow colour with a fine stream of bubbles and a mature nose showing butter, cream and mint chocolate at first before opening up showing citrus and flowers in a delicious way. Still a fresh acidity on the palate combined with red apples and cream with a lovely intensity on the lengthy finish showing a lime zest bitterness. Wow! This is really showing very well with a nice freshness combined with a lovely maturity! (Best 2016-2036)

Gareth's Magnum Dinner, part 1 (Noize): Magnum. More stuffing and complexity than the Pol we had alongside it, although no more lovely. Lemon, ginger and herbs on the nose, and a buttery (although not too rich) experience on the palate. Deep, smoky and pulsating with energy. Excellent.

Magnum. Pop and pour. Intense and a thrilling nose with green apples, hazzelnuts, brioche and chalck. Incredible concentration and with air newly chopped mushrooms. Intense fruit and brilliant 96 acid. Beautiful lenght and really a stunning wine. Probably close to peak peaking in this format, as the standard bottles have occations been over the top. I am sure it will be any better. Juhlin claimed this wine to be one og the best 96s, he might be right. Spectacular. 96p

A Year Later in Vero...; 3/17/2021-3/21/2021 (Vero Beach): This is a grower that I've gotten to like more and more over the last few years from the basic bottling to the nicer ones. A few years ago we had a 750 of the '90 at a restaurant in NYC that I was really impressed by. This was out of mag and my first impression is just much too young. Esp on the heels of the '85 LGD and the '99 Dom. This hasn't really gotten to secondary at all let alone tertiary. It's all freshness and crisp bubbles. I like the backbone of it. We have another mag which will continue to sleep for many more years.
Wine tasting dinner - sundry HQ (At home): Performed once again perfectly. Still fresh with lots of super balanced tertiary notes like hazelnut, almond and toffee. On the very top - outstanding. This was just a bottle; really looking forward to my magnums

Great bottle! Starting out very stringent with citrus acidity and chalk turning to red gooseberries and sweeter notes. 3.5h in, showing notes of fresh marzipan, brown butter. Very well integrated with a smooth mousse.

Middag med A+N och P+H i Sundbyberg (A+N, Sundbyberg): (Gold Label, disgorged in 2013, 100% Chardonnay) Golden yellow colour with an endless stream of fine bubbles and a nose showing gunpowder, yellow apples and some butterscotch notes with an incipient maturity and freshness still. Yellow apples acidity on the palate with butterscotch notes on the mid and with a distinct bitterness of lime on the nice and lengthy finish. This is very good, but need more time to evolve a bit.. but mostly I find the older disgorged (from 2005) and green label a couple of notches better.

NOSE: beautiful with freshly mashed apples (both green and red), nuts, almond and brioche, zhenjiang black vinegar, citrus (lemon and bergamot), little gunpowder, maybe some liquorice?, incipient maturation tones. With air coffee and some orange zest shoes itself as well.
PALATE: creamy with apples, citrus (lemon and lime), ripe victoria plum, bit of blackberries. not sun-ripened but "rainy", salt and umami.
Medium long aftertaste with a perfect and balanced bitterness. (red currants when chewing on the small kernels.)

Making the Most of Dinner Without Dad (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Light-medium golden color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. This was a total stunner tonight after a sour bottle a month or so ago. This was drinking fully mature, blissfully honeyed, nutty, and toasted. The fruit is deep and golden, apple, quince, some citrus, almond, vibrant, powerful and full bodied. I've said before when this is on, it is very Dom like and tonight was one of those nights. I could have polished off the entire bottle. The best bottle I've had of this. Thanks Leo!

Gourmetklubbens fyrtiofjärde middag: Tema Mannerström (Södermalm (P+H)): This is just excellent from start to finish.. starting on the lovely nose showing a perfectly maturity with butterscotch, coffee, cream and butter at first. With some extended time in the glass it shows more youthful notes of citrus flowers and minerals in a delicious way. Palate has just the perfect balance between apples acidity and smooth lime zest bitterness on the lengthy finish. This should keep evolving for decades to come, excellent! (Best 2016-2046)

Last tasted in 2014 from a gold label bottle, I was sure this would keep for many years. But since then I have been seeing many worrisome notes here and it got me concerned.
However, I have been stubborn and trusted my own evaluation of the wine and not touched a single bottle since. But a few weeks ago I got hold of a few green labeled bottles (which have an earlier disgorgement date than the golden ones) and decided to open a bottle to get a feel for where this wine is going.
Good news, this wine is still far from peaking! Has a completely clean and precise nose showing only slight secondary evolution. Palate is just as fresh and has a lovely mouthfeel, but unfortunately lacking in concentration and a bit short in finish. Makes me question the high scores given for example by Richard Juhlin and also question the longevity of the wine.
So my verdict, for this green labeled bottle is to drink now or save, if you have well stored bottles and enjoy more a mature champagne. I will let my gold labeled bottles stay in the cellar for at least another 4-5 years.

A far better bottle than the last one about a week ago but the fruit is really starting to fade. I'm starting to believe the -96 is at its peak at the moment with some bottles might be closing in on it while others are slightly past. I will likely finish mine within a year.

Big fan of the St Vincent -96 but this bottle was unfortunately already heading downhill. Green apples and freshly cut grass on the nose but very faint fruit on the palate and rather tart. From the Gold Label Bottling. Will open up another shortly to check.
Game @ The Harwood Arms (Harwood Arms, London): Nicely rich nose, just a hint of crème pat and an underlying chalkiness. Similar on palate. 96 acidity all present and correct. Chalky texture. Reasonable length. Impressive and in need of time. ***(*)

(Disgorged in December 2005, 100% Chardonnay) Such a lovely golden yellow colour with a stream of very fine bubbles that lead way for the maturing nose showing honey, chocolate, red apples and with a lovely creamy note as well. Palate is very pleasant with mature red apples and lots of citrus acidity to back it up for many more years to come. With some time in the glass it transforms on the nose in a very lovely way with more flowers and a wonderful butterscotch note. This was drinking wonderfully as always and is consistently one of the best cuvées of the 1996 vintage in my book! (Probably at its best 2016-2036)

This was drinking rather young and one-dimensional for its age; I was actually expecting more. That said, the wine exhibited precise notes of pear, red apple, and candied ginger. Not as honeyed or nutty as previous bottles, but also not too shabby. Still a good wine; just not showing it best self at this stage.

I regret not knowing the disgorgement date. Third bottle tasted over last 5 years. One killer, one fair, this one very good. Shows some moderate color advancement, mature on the palate, but retains decent freshness to allow for a bit more drinking window. However, unless you are purposely sitting on a batch and fully mature is your thing, I recommend drinking now.

(Disgorged in December 2005, 100% Chardonnay) Golden yellow colour with a stream of very fine bubbles and with a maturing nose showing cream, dark chocolate, fresh baked bread and minerals. Fresh and creamy palate with a delicious lime acidity that dominates over the yellow apples and plums fruit, and with a very nice and long lemon bitterness on the finish that keeps it all together. This was drinking wonderfully as always and is consistently one of the best cuvées of the 1996 vintage in my book! Best 2016-2036.
(Late disgorged in July of 2013, 100% Chardonnay) Yellow colour with a nose still youthful showing minerals, citrus and hazelnuts in a lovely way. Intense palate dominated by citrus acidity typical of the vintage and with no sign of oxidative notes at all and feeling very youthful. The long lasting lime peel finish really shows the power and longevity of this cuvée that I feel is one of the best showing what this powerful vintage is capable of. Both older and younger disgorgement of this cuvée are lovely right now, but maybe the late disgorged will last the longest... but only time will tell! Best 2021-2041.

A great Champagne. Served cold. Little brioche, grilled lemon and minerals in the nose. Medium bodied, fresh with great balance. 2 hours later, 14 °C+, nose with toast and minerals, more fullbodied, still with perfect balance, soft, persistant mousse and a long finnish.

From Mag purchased in 2008. I seem to favor the older disgorgements of this as I find them fresher and more focused. The Mag format obviously helped here and Mike S suggested that i should wait another decade before opening another and I concur. Will have to try a 750 soon to see where it's at. Overall a lazer beam BbB with precision and intensity -beautiful wine.

Fogheads@HSA - Østerbro (Østerbro, Copenhagen): Served blind vis-a-vis (or just after) the Pol Roger 1982, this did surprisingly not seem very much younger; it has the creamy chardonnay identity, a very fine concentration (1996!), a good acidity and overall a lively presence. #HSA#Foghead

96p, tasted directly after a trio of Dom Pérignon. For a lover of mature champagne, this one crushed the opposition. Never heard about this producer before, love a first sight. Delivers impressive quality at less than half the price of a DP. Smelled the empty glass for half an hour and instantly ordered a case of 00, 02 and 08. Massive character, autolytic, powerful complex nose with butter, cream, honey, nougat, caramel, cherries, vanilla, almonds, toast, roasted tones, flowers, the list could go on. WOW!!

This was still quite fresh, tension and brightness present, tangy and a bit tart, showing terroir, minerals, chalk, but with a sappy-honey concentration, notes of honey in hot tea, and super long. Bubbles are a bit more aggressive than the '96 Roederer BdB. The serious intellectual of the bunch. Lovely.

Gourmetklubbens trettioandra middag (Södermalm,, Stockholm): (older green label) This is showing a lovely maturity on the nose with dark chocolate, minerals, citrus, fudge and licorice root in a wonderful combination. Still lots of acidity so typical of the vintage in this mature palate with a very nice and elegant and long bittersweet lime peel finish. The best of 1996 are magical right now, and that description fits very well with this early disgorged cuvée as well. But even if it's oh so good right now, I feel it has more to give and I think it will keep on delivering for at least another decade to come.

(Disgorged in December 2005) Still very light yellow colour with a lot of fine and tiny bubbles, and lots of pressure in the bottle when opening. This is a very youthful 1996 which shows on the nose with its stellar minerality, flint and lemon in the beginning. The palate is also very youthful with lots of acidity so typical of the vintage and no sign of reduction or oxidation, just lots and lots of lemon and stones with a very long lemon peel finish. After a while in the glass it opens up with some butter, hazelnuts, licorice and butterscotch on the nose to show its lovely expression. This could very well be one of the top ten cuvées of the 1996 vintage, at least with this older disgorgement from 2005 (with the green etiquette) that was sold around 2006-2007. This bottle was way too young and should be kept for another decade in the cellar. Best 2021-2041.

Lovely mature nose, perfect now, beutiful opening, lovely fruit, turns into zinging 1996-acid, that kicks the tastebuds and carries into a quite long finish. Drinking well, will carry on developing in my opinion.

(Disgorged spring of 2006) Less dark yellow colour compared to other cuvées from 1996. Nose is still very youthful but with a very good mix showing oak, mature apples, plums, walnuts and dried fruits. The palate is smooth and dominated by apples and oak which gives a nice long acidic finish showing lime peel. Typical '96 showing acidity and freshness, feeling much younger than other cuvées from the same age. Very good matching with food and will surely keep on evolving for a decade or two. Best 2016-2036.

BORGOGNA 2011 (IL GIARDINO - ZAGAROLO): Sboccatura 2012.

Outstanding again, maybe not quite the bottle that we've had before, but it also may be that I didn't get very much to really savor. Still a wonderful pour and always a pleasure to drink. BODY: medium-light bodied; golden yellow color of medium depth.
TASTE: pear and lemon fruits; a bit underbrushy; high acid; great vivacity; this is the real deal, and serves as a reminder that I need to buy and age more vintage Champagne than I presently do. Super fantastic wine! Gut impression score: mid 90's.

Big, complex nose with good depth. Some sulfuric, gunpowder minerals,, crushed stones, butter, pine nuts, roasted coffee, grapefruit and a little tropical notes. High acidity, with marked dryness. Really good intensity and a long finish. Great stuff for 750SEK ($90).

Certainly a great, fine tuned blanc de blancs with some maturity. I remember drinking it several years ago (around 2006-2007), and it wasn't nearly as good at the time (maybe around 89, then, approximately from my memory), so it certainly has grown and developed.

New Year's Day, 2015 (Sushi Kondo, Sentosa Golf Club, Singapore): An unsually big, aggressive Blanc de Blancs, this was pretty good though. The nose showed some development on it, with notes of bread and brioche and little nutty accents alongside white fruited aromas playing against a little honeyed backnote. It was certainly an expressive bouquet, but it certainly did not give any hints of how big, round and rich the palate would be, with powerful notes of red apples and sweet lemons on the attack and some buttery brioche on the midpalate couched in a frothy mousse and lots of bright 1997 acidity. There was a lot of extract here, especially towards the grippy, lime zest finish. I have a feeling this will always be a bit divisive - one must like the style. I thought it was pretty good - perhaps just lacking in finesse and nuance. However, while this is starting to mature and was drinking quite decently, it should still benefit from a couple more years in the cellar. It may do better with just that bit more time to integrate and gain complexity.

Something is weired with this Champagne. Too much fizz - really agressive. Body too lean, no real complexity for this age. I suspect this is flawed, and hope so. Will need to wait for the next bottle.

Yellow colour with an amazing amount of fine, tiny bubbles. Green olives, butter and chocolate on the nose. This bottle was in a very nice phase right now, with alot of glass development. Will last atleast 10 years more. Wonderful showing of the vintage acidity combined with nice fruit!

Fresh yet mature w lovely brioche, nuts and honey but still pears, apple and medium to full body. Minerality is there but discreet. Rich. Balanced and well-integrated. Mouthfeel is not on par w the rest. Very nice wine, perfectly mature right now and lovely to drink, may still improve w cellaring but might as well just go downhill quickly-hard to tell.

CDP Offline at Heyday (Donjon Vertical; Clos des Pape, Charvin, plus Whites) (Heyday, Mpls, MN): Medium gold color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over 30 minutes. This was delightfully good stuff. Loved the nose; earthy, nutty, toasted, apple, mineral - very Dom-like. The palate is full bodied and intense, nice mousse, creamy, lots of crisp minerality, earthy, nutty, citrus, orchard fruit, and long complex finish. This was in great shape and absolutely beautiful to drink.

Was showing some age, but in a good way. Very creamy and, at the same time, showing a good backbone of acid. Lots of toast and brioche with a healthy dose of lemon and honey.

Ipnotico. Sorso perfetto, bolla che è crema, sotto picchia l'acidità. Grande eleganza, lunghissimo.

New (gold) label so a recent disgorgement I think - cork looks 2-3 years old and has print saying 12 - 05?
I didnt do tasting notes but recall the wine as beeing very fresh and clean in flavour. Not overly complex yet. I remember my surprise at the lack of maturity and wishing that Id saved this in my cellar for at least another 3-5 years. Luckily I have 2 more bottles.

Green apples mixed with lemons. Very fresh, with a pale yellow colour and with tiny bubbles. Very difficult to believe this is a 96. This has many good years ahead of it. Disgorged June 2013.

Compared with earlier bottles bought a few years ago, this lot could have have been recently disgorged? Lovely freshness and exceptionally well balanced, this has an acidic profile that is kept very much in check by excellent chalky- and citrusy flavours. Very lovely and a no brainer QPR-wise. Best bottle yet. (94+)

(Blind) Mildt, gyllen gul.

Fudge on the nose, with a stroke of SO2/smoke/flint and yellow apples. Fudge/butter and creamy apples, with medium length and decent minerallity. No signs of being a 1996 thought, as the acidity was very low compared to all other Champagnes from 96 I have tried. This was more like a 1998, and that was my guess. Drink up now. 89 - 90

Svakt ravgul farge. Drikk opp.

Opened 2 first 0,75 bottles of a 6 btl box aquired 3 months ago. Both totally flat with immidiate sulphur attack. Suspect and fear remaining 4 btls will flaw too, but still have a hope I have been just unlucky. Have enjoyed this wine immencly over the past year and recently had a 96 from magnum which was outstanding.

Yellow colour. On the nose there's chocolate and nuts in a mature oxidative tone. The palate is high in acidity and with some oxidative tones in the background.
It's some bottle variation in this champagne from this vintage. Although most bottles are high in rating like this one I sometime come across bottles that are more disharmonic and with more oxidative tones than the better ones. Still one of the best from the vintage!

Nice nose with autolyse, butter, lime, lemon. Very precise and very fresh. In the mouth the acidity is proeminent and I'm not sure it will integrate in the future. My previous notes from 2 and 3 years ago of that champagne are much more positive than now. I fell a bit of unbalnce whereas I found it perfectly balanced 2 yeras ago even with sharp acidity. On the aftertaste, phenolic finish drying a bit. I'm afraid this wine is going to dry out . Drink it up !

Burgundy 2002 Horisontal Tasting (@ Terkel): Powerful bread notes on the nose but still restrained and tightly wound. Still quite intense. Plenty of fresh green apples on the palate with a pretty harsh and young acidity. Still remains quite elegant but well structured. A slight bitterness on the finish which is long and pronounced. Loved it! 95-96p

A lot of structure, quite linear but hints at some yeasty, doughy notes. A ton of lemon and acid fruits. Racey. Obvious that it is well made. I am thinking this tastes quite young and would like to see it evolve over the years. Excellent champagne, but I enjoy a bit more lushness and softer mouthfeel in my bubbles.

This tastes extremely young, more like a 2004 than a 12 year old adolescent. Hard for me to read. It I think the matiere is in there but hidden behind the wall of citric acidity. I'll grade it very conservatively for now but would not be surprised to see it blossom in the years to come.

Very complex and pleasing on the nose with distinct tones of coffee and chocolate mixed with hints of beef broth and cream. Unfortunately the palate is very much filled with minerals and though acidity which is typical for the vintage (-96).
Although I'm pleased with the wine I'm a bit disturbed by the combination of maturity on the nose and a though finish in the mouth. The question is when will they get balanced again, or won't they?

Blind holiday Champagne Tasting at Brian's (with wives) (Chappaqua, NY): Yeasty nose, coarse bubbles, dried sour cherries. Long, mouth coating finish. I was extremely surprised to see this was a blanc de blanc since it seemed to have all of the markers of pinot based wine. This was the group's #3 (behind the '96 Krug and '00 Argyle Extended Tirage) with two people ranking it second out of seven.

A very creamy and nice smell of minerals and lemon combined with som yeast on the nose. Very long taste that still feels youthful for it's age. Maturing very nicely! One day later in the fridge (half bottle) it feels nice and youthful, will last for a very long time.

(from magnum) Excellent nose dominated by citrus and some toast. Far younger nose and mouth than the 2002 Vieilles vignes grand cru brut "Presidence" that I had right next to it. Sublime wine in perfect harmony. The flavours are supported by soaring acidity but it has impeccable balance. Great acidic finish. Very light in the mouth nevertheless. Outstanding! 93++.

Mineralig, lite sötma i doften.

Vakker for øyet!

Drank from a magnum.

Lovely golden yellow colour with a mature nose showing baked bread, butter and dark chocolate and opens up with some herbal touch of licorice in a very pleasant way. Still showing a distinct green apples crispy acidity on the mature palate with a creamy mid showing lots of butter before some dried fruit takes over on the lengthy and intense finish. Lovely minerals saltiness on the lips as well. This is showing very well right now, but should keep for years to come.

Nose: Brioche, sugar cane, white flower
Notes: Drank from a magnum.

Felt quite young and vibrant. Initially fairly lean with fine mousse, citrus notes and some flint/oystershell.
After 90 min in the glass, starting to open up with white blossom, almonds/marzipan and sponge cake.

Such a lovely golden yellow colour with a stream of very fine bubbles that lead way for the maturing nose showing honey, chocolate, red apples and with a lovely creamy note as well.

Yellow colour with a nose still youthful showing minerals, citrus and hazelnuts in a lovely way.

Fudge/butter and creamy apples, with medium length and decent minerallity.
No signs of being a 1996 thought, as the acidity was very low compared to all other Champagnes from 96 I have tried.
This was more like a 1998, and that was my guess.
Drink up now.

Svakt ravgul farge.
