  • Delightful, with all the Cabernet Franc character that you want, elegantly presented with enough power to hold your attention. Can still age another 5-10 years. Delicious now.

  • From a small capped bottle (wine divided for zoom tasting). Day 2: soaring nose summer and sour cherries, lots of acid, savory, earth, tobacco, very crunchy with a good amount of pyrazines. Plaate entry is strong and very good - herbal tobacco, dusty minerals with supporting cherry fruit. High acid with great grip and poise. Really crunchy and juicy in the mid and end palate with tons of tobacco. Finish is herbal and dusty and dry. A bit tart. My favorite right now of the 08-09-10 trilogy tasted side by side. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20.

  • Superlative. Such an elegant, deep, and perfectly balanced cab franc. Supple fruit. Great vintage for Baudry. 5 more years to reach peak I'd say

  • nicely ripe loire cab franc, a lovely maturing nose, attractive blackcurrant leaf and fruit mix, a little dry to finish, but very satisfying to sip at the end of the week

  • Ruby. Some varietal olive and dill. Lean, tannic, mineral, and saline without a great deal of fruit expression. When I tasted this at the domain shortly after bottling, I had high hopes for it, but I must say that it has not yet fleshed out into something more than it was in its early days. FWIW, this was the Dressner bottling.

  • A mix of black and red fruit, blackberries and dark cherries, also meaty notes. The limestone terroir adds the salinity. The wine gets together, but needs some minutes in the glass if pnp.

  • A lot of soil and meaty (bloody) notes on the nose, red cherries combined with black fruit, high salinity, still young, but so interesting to see the elements getting together.

  • Is this ever going to evolve into something remotely mature? Still inky black. Deep aromas of blackberries, with a strong note of steel/iron, and a clear tone of green pepper. Full bodied, very high acidity, fine grained tannins. Steely taste and aftertaste with a fresh/acidic tone that lasts for at least a minute. Very Left bank Bordeaux-like, but with less fruit. Impressive wine, but very hard to really like. For those of you preferring liquid minerals. Keep for another ten years?

  • Really enjoyed this tonight, was afraid it wouldn’t be ready but it was delicious.

  • Impressive with dark fruits, spicy herbal notes and a fine ridge of acidity on the spine that keep it fresh and in balanced with the chalky tannins.

  • Opened with friends, no formal notes. I remember it being dark, chewy and showing well over three days. Will continue to hold the others.

  • Dark cherries, berries, soil, the typical salty, mineral elements from this terroir, some mature sweetness which starts to appear, in a very good spot right now and for the next twenty years.

  • This is a very nicely balanced wine. Fine persistent tannins, dried herbs, bright berry fruit, very much a food friendly wine, elegant and understated. Great now but no rush.

  • I first had this 6 years ago and found it delicious then, and still delicious today, however now it is much more complete. A Bordeaux like nose, with berries, tobacco, and earth on the palate. A little drying sensation at the end, but, otherwise, right in the zone. It was well worth the wait to get to this stage.

  • Two years since my last bottle, and with two+ hours of air, this is more than impressive. It’s right there with 2010 Rougeard Poyeaux as the best pure Cabernet Franc I have ever tasted. When this wine was released it was a beast. Now it’s sculpted, as from red marble. The aromatics are precise, and totally Cab Franc. The tobacco and earthy red fruit blend with the beginnings of leather and a hint of bitter chocolate. There’s still a bit of drying tannin on the finish, so I think further cellaring is a good idea. That said, it’s well worth drinking a bottle, and scaling the heights of Cabernet Franc.

  • In a sense pretty much the same impression as 5 years ago. Present itself slightly smoother and without the peppery edges. Still young and with obvious upside of cellaring. The nose got serious depth and the palate is firm and solid. DAGIJ pretty much nails it in his note below.

  • Really singing with a deep, complex, stinky nose. Balanced, complex, but still plenty of stuff to age on.

  • This is just a wonderful example of how good - and ageworthy - red wines from the Loire-region are. This is nothing but a classic Cabernet Franc in a slightly modern style, that is: without the underripe aromas of green peppers that growers have claimed are "authentic". Deep ruby, almost violet. Is this 10 years old? Nose is reminding me of classified Bordeaux; blackcurrant, red cherries, some wet earth and leather. Still, it is fresher and more "spicey" than a Medoc-wine. Medium to full bodied attack, high acidity, fine grained tannins, lots of red fruits and cherries in the mouth (no blackcurrant here!), and a fresh and cleansing aftertaste with fine grained tannins and good fruit. This is clearly a wine for food, given the hefty structure of acidity and tannins. Perfect with a roasted chicken (or any other white meat). Believe it or not, but this wine is still too young. Keep for another 3-5 years, or drink it with food.

  • Drank over two nights and this was consistent, if not a bit more full and rich on night two. Effusive and attractive aromas of bell pepper, tobacco leaf and plum fruit. The palate has moderate levels of concentration with good balance throughout. A charming wine.

  • On the palate dark cherries, meaty notes with tobacco and leather, the tannins are ripe and soft, drinking very well.

  • PnP, this was fantastic from the outset. Meaty, earthy and a bit of rawness that still manages to be quite pretty, in part because of the balance of fruit. Continued to bloom throughout the four hours it was open. No downside to drinking now, but another few years will give additional improvement.

  • Served blind. When I opened this up 6 hours before the meal, my immediate sense was TCA. I swirled some more, then paused and decided it was perhaps not right but I didn't want to make that final call without some feedback. Took to dinner, served it blind and right away the team at the table knew it was corked. #######! I should have trusted my gut. Damn TCA.

  • WOW! What a sculpted, intense, perfectly crystalline nose. The purity of fruit and minerals is staggering. Not really anywhere near ready or open. The palate is quite firm and strict though it opens somewhat on day 2. The fruit is so deep and intense, but is that an illusion of the structure which drives and carries it? It's hard to know what the future holds, but my guess is that this will be thrilling when it comes out of its shell. This seems like Phase III of this wine. There was Phase I which lasted through 2002 showing the potential. Then there was Phase II starting in 2003 when the shift in climate had a dramatic effect on the Loire and Matthieu was taking over. I think that Phase III started in the late 2000s when they started to come to grips with the new climate reality and gained in confidence. I've been saying this for more than a decade, but it bears repeating, this is the cheapest "great wine" in the world. It really is challenging Rougeard (although they are different stylistically), and I don't think that is hyperbole. Considering you can get a case for the cost of a bottle of Bourg, well, figure it out.

  • Early days yet for this big boy of the Baudry lineup, but it still offers a great deal of pleasure. Deep red fruit and substantial tobacco aromas, are supplemented with earthy, herbal notes. It’s rich in overall volume, but has a level of austerity on the palate that creates an interesting tension in the wine. I would wait another couple of years before having another bottle, expecting an overall long, positive future.

  • Drinking well-made Cabernet Francs from one of the best producers of red wines in the Loire valley is almost like drinking a classified Bordeaux in the classic, dry style. This is one good example. Still deep purple colour, no signs of brick taint or other signs of age. Deep cherry and boysenberry aromas with a clear hint of smoke, as well as dust and chalk. Almost no sign of the green pepper aroma that so many say is typical of CF (while it is just a sign of unripe grapes). Full bodied, lots of cherries and dark forest berries. Smooth tannins, almost silky, high acidity which gives a very fresh impression in spite of quite high alcohol. Long and fresh aftertaste of dark cherries, chalk/steel, some dry earth, leading into a dry finish. Has just entered its first plateu of maturity. This will benefit from ten more years in the cellar and after that..... well, I think it will be almost immortal.

  • Dark berries, tobacco, green pepper, spices, long, after opening the fruit is hiding the salinity which appears shortly after, this is a great wine, not at all on its apogee, but great to taste already.

  • Another controversial wine (the ringer in a blind tasting vertical of Olga Raffault's Les Picasses). I had it just above the middle of the pack but imagine it needs a lot more time. Sweet fruits with lots of grip and tannin, one taster thought it was a tad overripe (although that taster tried it again on Day 2 and revised his comments saying that it had come together and seemed Medoc-like). It's clearly a bigger and more powerful wine than the Raffaults. It will be interesting to see how it evolves. One of group's quirkier tasters ranked it his number one, WOTN, without a doubt and sung its praises.

  • On opening, this was too stinky and vegetal to drink. Nearly. As it warmed from cellar temperature and had some air, it became a wine of interest. The nose went from spoiling vegetables to dusty green pepper - just as it should. In the mouth it’s very light-bodied, thin feeling but not thin-tasting. It is brightly acidic, with tart cherry, chalky minerality and the dusty earth still hanging in from the nose. The finish is long with quite a nice blending of tart acidity and chalk. Intriguing - the kind of wine that makes you say “hmmm.”

  • Sadly my last bottle wish I had bought more 10's from the Loire! Takes a few hours of air to show the ripe dark berries, earth, spice, green peppers begin to emerge and hint o tobacco leaf, in the mouth there's nice upfront fresh dark fruit, ripe juicy tannins support on the mid palate don't detract from the pleasure, edium acidity and medium plus length would love to try it again in a decade

  • Very classic, albeit muted, tones of cassis, earth, & dark berries here. Even with air, the wine feels like it might be in a sleepy phase.

  • -- popped and poured --
    -- tasted non-blind over 2 days --

NOSE: very stony; Cab. Franc herbaceousness; some light to medium-light plum aroma; not bretty; a bit high-toned; dried herbs; bitter florals; wet potting soil; very complex; opened-up and filled-out approx. 45 min. after opening.

BODY: medium-light bodied; lots of fine particulate matter present; magenta-garnet color of medium-deep depth.

TASTE: very tannic; very stony; gently herbal; plum; pencil lead; a touch bitter; *maybe* a slight hint of brett, but if it is there it's certainly not bad enough to be bothersome or worrisome; garrigué and light oak on the finish, which is of medium intensity and medium-long to long duration; alc. not noticeable; medium acidity is adequate; medium-light concentration of fruit – I do wish there was a bit more here, but that's a minor quibble; markedly better than the previous bottle, which was very bretty. This showed similarly on Day 2 as it did on Day 1, but for being a bit more thin/closed/tight on Day 2 than it was on Day 1. Hands Off for at least another 5 years. Overall, excellent and exciting.

  • Schwarz Lila Rot

    purple red black core
Blackberries, cassis , licorice , tobacco, leather, iron, spicy oak and floral. Relatively dense, juicy, gravy , good acidity, more tannins than 2009 and less sweetish fruit extract. With time more spicy , Aenis? more ethereal. Long dark fruity slightly tannins finish.
On Day 2 more closed than 2009,but i think has a little more substance, complexity than 2009 but 2009 is on 2nd day a lot more accessibly, drinkable.

  • Dark dense colour. Bottomless nose with great texture. Blackcurrant, blueberry bush, herbs, vanilla, dark chocolate, undergrowth, tobacco, pepper, sweet liquorice and much more. Really good.
Firm and very structured attack on the palate, you can definitely feel the youth, there's a lot more to expect here in the future that's for sure. Immature dark and blue berries, blackcurrant stem. Spicy aftertaste with pepper and liquorice together with black tea. Fine and young tannins in need of food at the moment. High acidity and a lot of energy. For me this really should rest atleast 5-10 years, probably longer. On the other hand it is approachable today with the right food, as always it comes down to your taste and preferences.

  • -- decanted ~ 30 min. before initial taste --
    -- tasted non-blind over 2.5 hours --

NOSE: extremely meaty – raw bloody steak; savory; pronounced green streak; high-toned, in an odd/sewage kind of way; expressive; hints of bloomy rind cheese and dry mineral; deep; complex; slightly bretty; light/ hint-toned red fruits.

BODY: medium-light bodied; superfine particulate matter present; violet-garnet color of medium-deep depth.

TASTE: rustic; lots of garrigue and low-level brett; fruit is muted; plum, to the extent fruit flavors are presented; pronounced green aspect; solid mineral note (pencil lead); tannins are pretty light, which makes this a flashy wine; medium to medium-light fruit concentration; better with food (steak) than without; medium to medium+ acidity; 13.5% alc. not noticeable; a touch ashy, with a hint of oak; complex; I do hope future bottles aren’t this bretty, as this wine is probably gangbusters without it (or at a lower concentration level) – I could imagine scoring it in the 93 – 95 range, if clean. Need to check-in on another bottle soon, just to see if I can get a better feel for the brett situation here.

  • Decanted 3 hours before drinking. Smells like smoky-sweet bbq, earth, and brooding dark red fruit; fairly tight, but with potent brightness shining through. Delicious fully ripe yet very fresh and tart berrylike fruit on the palate, sappy, with earthy meaty depth, and sandpaper-like tannins that need some significant time. Nice streak of tea/vegetation in the background, coming out more in the finish, along with stony, earthy minerality. Not at all mature, but quite enjoyable, and fun to get a glimpse of where it's headed.

  • Classic Chinon. The nose is dark cherry and tobacco. In the mouth, the fruit isn't quite as forceful but it is nevertheless present. Mix in some black pepper and bell pepper and this is one delicious wine.

  • Somehow very compelling and drinkable while being tough to get a read on. It's actually most aromatic and flavorsome at the beginning, or at least it shows more earthy, brothy, non fruit elements at the beginning. After the first glass or so it is all sticky, grippy red and black fruit with some edgy tannin that gives it a pleasantly firm personality.

  • Wow, what a wine! Great mix of dark fruit, tobacco leaf, earth and some herbs on the nose palate is quite generous already with juicy acidity and drying tannins keeping everything in line. This should evolve into something really special

  • Foolish of me to open it so young, but I thought I'd give it a whirl. Even with plenty of airtime, this remained tightly coiled, showing deep briary fruits and unmistakeable Chinon typicity on the nose, while clearly keeping its secondary charms in reserve. On the palate it's no different, with a strong, albeit fine-grained, tannic clamp and the wood still present but nonetheless showing great acidity and balance. Just so much packed into this dense and beautiful wine. Don't make the same mistake I did: leave it alone for at least five more years.

  • This bottle was opened just over a day ago, went to dinner last night, courtesy of Andrew C from his cellar--thanks, buddy. We were celebrating in his honor and so he kindly brought this wine. This was good last night--balanced, juicy, black raz fruit and that cool herbal signature from the Cab Franc. He encouraged me to take it home so this note has a day of slow ox air, for context. I've not had much experience with Cab Franc, Baudry or Loire but a few years ago, I found Chidaine, Huet, Crochet, Boulay--I love all these wines, but they are all white. So recently, having seen some of the chatter in the WB forum about Baudry, I jumped in and bought some of the 2010s. So, my first Baudry note. The aromatics on this reflect to me tobacco leaf, cigar box. The palate? Cuts a nice broad path of blue and black raz fruit, a juicy quality in the center of all it, then finishing with some leathery tannin. Last night, this was more open and easier to get at, tonight a day later it's a lot tighter. Coincidentally, I wrote up the 2010 Copain Brosseau Syrah a few mins prior to this note, there is some features of both wines that are common--tannin/mineral, blue and red fruit and terrific balance, ageworthy. Aside from the leather, tobacco note of this Boissee, these two wines are much closer than they are different. In several years, I believe this will be, like the Copain (a shorter wait curve), a fantastic bottle of wine. Right now it's youthful, flavorful, with distinctive flavors. My 2 in my cellar will sit another few years before I have another one.

  • I knew this would be too young, but I opened it anyway. It's a little difficult to enjoy now - even after a four hour decant it's tightly coiled, the wood is noticeable and the tannins are a little rough. It still has that beautiful acidity that Baudry's 2010s all display, and I think it has tremendous potential. My remaining six bottles won't be touched for at least 5 years.

  • Quite rich, with loads of full, stony black curranty fruit and some funk, concentrated but naturally so, very fine and crunchy. On the second day it has mellowed out a bit and lost some of that initial rich mouthfeel, but with no loss of vibrancy. The funk blew off as well. Very classy juice, built for aging.

  • Celebrating Cobb's birthday (Phil's place, Chicago IL): Nose: Very aromatic and deep nose with tones of dark red cherries, root vegetables, roses, and some earth tones. There is a perfumed quality to this with a feminine side as well.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium/high acidity and chewy tannins. Very well balanced with a silky feel behind the structure with feminine tones of dark red cherries, crushed rocks, herbs, root vegetables, and red fruits.

Overall: This is a very complex and young wine. It is showing very well right now, but it can easily get better as there is a lot lying underneath.

  • Has the elegance, balance and pure fruit to become an epic wine. Already showing incredibly well, this has it all. Pure cherries, with light tobacco, pepper, and earth integrated throughout. The palate was incredible rich, but the acidity kept this from being sappy or overly dense. Seriously good stuff.

  • Simply stated this wine is the COMPLETE PACKAGE..minerality, fruit, acidity, elegance, earthiness..this is a GREAT wine

  • The previous notes are all on the money. This is a fantastic wine, young and full of potential. Sensational nose, even on the second night, I could catch wiffs of the dark fruit and cedar aromas from across the table. The palate is full of pure, crunchy, saturating fruit and a strong streak of bright acidity that prevents the fruit from being thick and overwhelming. At this stage the fruit dominates, with only hints of the cedary, gravelly notes that I hope will develop with some bottle age. There is a lot of structure coiled up behind the substance of this wine but everything appears to be perfectly balanced. A real wine for the long haul. Like all of the Baudry bottlings, this has its own unique place in the lineup. I love the Domaine bottling for its freshness and joy, the Grezeaux for it's unabashed energy and cab franc rusticity, and the Clos Guillot for its elegance and poise, but this certainly takes its place at the top as the vin de garde of the lineup. Will be holding my remaining bottles for some time.

  • I agree on the stoney minerality and the nobility comments. This shows outstanding potential -- the wine's clarity and purity are pretty extraordinary, but this is wound tight and is going to take a lot of patience.

1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Although showing some nice sour-edged fruit, stoney minerals, undergrowth and herbs, this is all about structure and potential. Acids are tightly coiled and tannins smooth, but with a subtle powdery character. A serious wine with great purity and excellent balance, just needs time - at least 10 years.

  • Visits to Touraine Producers-Baudry, Huet, Foreau...; 10/22/2012-10/24/2012 (Vicinity of Tours, France): Dark ruby. Not very forthcoming. The fruit is currently locked up behind a wall of acidity, stoniness and tannin, but the lovely, harmonious feel tells you that it is there. Noble, elegant, long young wine with a fascinating saline finish. It is poised for a long run and may be one of the greatest young Chinons I have ever tasted. Fantastic young red that should be great.
