Opened as part of a tasting with Alex Macdonald and while he was in town. Day two was a small group of us with killer wines (2010 Chave Hermitage, mag of ‘02 Krug, Selosse Substance, 1996 Latour, 2003 Mouton, 1992 Dominus).
Quick one hour double decant to prep this beauty. While La Mouline is my favorite, La Turque still incorporates the co-ferment with Viognier. 93 Syrah/7 Viognier.
Beautiful translucent ruby in the glass. As I get with certain Cote Rotie wines (especially Guigal), barbecue and bacon fat can be overwhelming when young, but this has channeled a really balanced profile. Aromatic notes of smoked meat, cherry liqueur, and espresso. Beautifully rich yet elegant on the palate. Great nerve of acidity with a finish sporting plenty of tannin to carry this a while. Black peppered raspberries, black fruit on the palate with a little bacon and a hint of sweet/tangy red fruit at the core note. Enjoy now with a short decant or hold another 5yrs.

July 4th Mondo Event (Atlanta, GA): Tasted blind. Drinking in a great spot now with integrated tannin, some lovely spice on the backend, some sweet tannins and a kiss of oak. I struggled to place this wine, but most called it N. Rhone.

Popped and poured. Very clear, even right off the bat, that this is not your ordinary Cote Rotie. Very young in appearance, after 20 years! More red/violet than anything. Brilliant, with full legs. This bottle, purchased only a year or two ago, has obviously been very well kept. Smoky, meaty aromas arising from the glass already. Seems very polished in the mouth, with a glass-like texture, but there is power here, too. Placeholder note for now, rating after it airs a bit more. A bit more than two hours in, this is developing some white pepper in the nose to go along with the meaty elements. Not much development in the mouth so far. Now about four hours in, raw meat in the nose. Flavors mostly blackberries and earth; rather monolithic to me. This wine has such a freshness about it, seems so young, I wonder if it needs more time to reveal more charms (or is this as good as it gets?). At the moment, more lean than I would have expected, but that may just be the vintage, which was good but not great by all accounts. My rating, after tasting over several hours of sipping: 5-13-16-8: 92/100.

Guigal’s La-La-La horizontal, wine #1/3. 93% Syrah & 7% Viognier, vines average 28 years of age, aged for 42 months in new oak. For me it was the smokiest of the trio heavenly concentrated, but not as powerful as Landone or delicate as Moulin. Heavily smoked complex aroma of smoked cold cuts, roasted raw beef, dried strawberries, char, leather, scorched earth, dried tomatoes. Full body, concentrated and multilayered with core smoky flavours, spices and salty edges with bright acidity and rich but smooth tannins. After 9 hours became more polished and elegant with more herbal and black tea infused flavours.

There is impact and precision and a good bit of fun. Traditional? Nope. But I don’t need tradition every day when a wine is made this well. Wonderful and squarely in the drinking window. (95)

Private dinner @ Little Cove, Noosa. This wine remains deeply coloured with a dark cherry hue and a fine nose of blackberry, dark cherries, raspberries and touches of bacon, Asian spice and gravel. The palate was quite rich with a spherical entry of fruit and a soft long finish with plenty of earth and spice to balance the fruit. A lovely delicious wine that showed both balance and aromatic subtlety in its overall impact.

After 5 hour decant. Nose was much bigger when I first poured out into decanter. Now nose much muted. Tar, blackberry, lavender. In the mouth viscous, tannins very soft, and tight acidic backbone. I’m really enjoying it but rather disappointed nose has largely disappeared. Maybe would have been bigger without as long a decant.

The youngest red of a lovely Cote Rotie evening. There were other Turques (91 and 98) and this 04 was not quite at the same level, but definitely a totally gorgeous glass. Having had Mouline 04 recently this felt a bit more soaring and monolithic vs the more balanced Mouline from memory. All about primary fruit today and should be really nice with another 5-10 years of bottle age.

The vintage is considered rather small in the northern Rhône. The sun did not burn as much as usual, at the same time the winemakers harvested a large crop. As a result, the wines are leaner, have a very vital acidity and are aromatically lighter in fruit. The acidity will continue to carry them through the years, but they are of slender stature and lack the typical intensity. In this respect, the 2004 La Turque is a perfect reflection of its vintage. From the first moment, the wine is fresh and surprisingly delicate. Aromas of red fruits, sour cherries, cranberry and a mix of flowers and tart herbs. Medium-bodied on the palate with a very fresh acidity that strikes me as animating, but will certainly be described as too spiky by some connoisseurs. Aromatically not quite typical of northern Rhône - again sour cherry, red plum, but also herbal notes and some graphite. In its somewhat special way coherent and animating to drink and quite elegant and with Burgundian finesse. With quite a lot of air, the more typical Côte Rôtie notes such as plum and black olive still make a cautious appearance at the end. 92/100 points 2021 - 2026

Wines Watching the White Sox Beat the Cubs (Riverwoods, IL): Served double blind immediately upon our arrival, I quickly thought Northern Rhone, even though others were guessing Cali Cab or other such nonsense. Lots of black cherry, black pepper and licorice. Very good density and balance. I thought it Hermitage based on the meatiness, so was just 50 km off. I didn't quite get the floral note I typically expect from La Turque, but overall this was wonderful now.

96/100 The wine starts a bit closed then embraces us with warm plum pie, cherry, cedar wood, leather and refined chocolate. It is very drinkable right now. Both tannins and acids are mellow and leaves just a bit of resistance like they should. Super wine.

Not exactly austere, but not fully open. Slightly closed on the palate though more open on the nose. This is very solid wine but doesn't move toward greatness and I'm not sure that it will in the future.

The 2004 La Turque is mostly opaque and medium ruby in color. This requires at least an hour decant, but then the nose blossoms to emit aromas of plum, blackcurrant, bing cherry, licorice, cola, smoked game, loamy soil, white truffle, flint, cracked pepper, and oak. Once in the mouth, the wine showcases notes of ripe red cherry, redcurrant, candied raspberry, dried blueberry, forest floor, graphite, earthy mushroom, leather, smokey tobacco, dried green herbs, and mineral. This supple and elegant wine is medium-bodied with medium acidity, medium (-) tannins, and a long finish. 350 cases produced.
Indicative blend: 93% Syrah, 7% Viognier; 13% ABV

Only v brief decant. Fruit felt softer and a pinch more meaty and fresher than the 02/18 bottle (that was from 2h decant), yet with some elegance and refinement. Almost seamless, and with very nice balance. Medium ++ finish. Plush tannins. Drinking well now, but give 2-3h decant. 93-94p

With approx 2h decant, the 04 showed some steely red fruits, chalk, heaps of graphite/pencil shave and flavours of dry aged meats. Started out in the direction of Bdx but with a further 2-3h it was more floral and gave almost a Burgundian feel. Drinking well now but with clear upside. 93p

What a terrific wine! Dark red on opening. Poured directly from the bottle, no decant. Flowery nose with strong hints of smoke and spice. Very soft and velvety on the palate and a little bit of meat or bacon which went well with my prime rib burger! Tasted relatively young with lots of years and maturation left. Id like to find more of this wine.

Enjoyed it at dinner with friends. One of my best friends brought the wine from his cellar. I didn't know what to expect. I always worried about older Rhone wines being too smoky and meaty for my taste, specially from "lighter" years. La Turque from great years has always been among my favorite wines (the 05 is spectacular). My concerns were unfounded. What a fantastic bottle. The nose burst out of the bottle as soon as we opened it - smoke, spices, dark fruits. We poured it onto glasses without decanting. The wine was dark and brooding very little amber on the edges. On the mouth, the wine was seamless, intense, creamy, exotic. The smoke was there but it was completely integrated into the fruit. Tannins were not noticeable at all. It tasted like a much younger bottle - but so so smooth and elegant. What a wonderful coda to a marvelous dinner.

Decanted this for about an hour - this will be a bit of a fan boy post as it was the first LaLa I have ever had the pleasure of.
That being said this was an incredible wine and lived up to all the hype surrounding LaLas. It had great cherry/currant notes on the front with a bit of leather in the middle that washed back to good meat flavor with a very smooth pepper finish. There was almost no bite to wine and it was a great experience in drinking.

Decanted 45 minutes and enjoyed over 2 hours. I really like where this wine is right now, as it has a great balance of fruit and maturity. The oak is present, but integrated. There was a slight dryness on the finish that kept me from rating it even higher, but glad to have more of this. A-

2004 E. GUIGAL LA TURQUE COTE ROTIE- so easy on the palate, this was soft and silky with understated peppery cranberry and red cherry; as such it had a degree of elegance and charm which I found delightful; others might say this was somewhat closed and not fully expressive and I would not argue the point, but wish I had it in my cellar and happy to have had it in my glass.
This was clear and quite deep purple coloured wine was poured with 45 minutes decanting. The nose had a bouquet of cherries and some dark spices. In the glass were flavours of these same ripe cherries, some chocolate as well as some pepper and other spices. The levels on both the acidity and tannins were quite light and I really enjoyed the fact that this wine comes in around 13% alcohol and was not heavy on my palate yet it had quite a nice and long finish.

ChrisD's 40th: Gorgeous nose - pure and lifted violets, roses, raspberry, spice and cherry. The palate is more serious, with structure and plenty of fruit depth. Easy to like now, but I know that this will be even better with enough time.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of thistle, cassis, white pepper and hint of roasted meat and some perfume notes. Flavors of black cherries, black berries, black raspberries and a splash of balsamic vinegar on the medium to long finish. Medium acidity, firm tannin, full bodied. Drink now with some air or continue to hold.

Garnet with hints of orange and brick at the edge, slight haze to clear, and opaqye. The smells are raspberry, smoke, leather, floral notes, mint, vanilla, and walnut. The tastes are pepper, tar, cherry, blackberry, smoke, soy, vanilla, green olive, and cinnamon. Very complex, long finish, with fine but slightly furred tannins.

Coravin Marathon with Tim, Ben, Michael (Wingtip): (blind) Moderate red to a garnet rim. A rich nose of bacon fat and coffee, tiramisu, subtle but pure blackberry liqueur. Balsamic notes, fresh-chives, green onions, slight green olive. This has seen some new oak - there's a sweetness here, but it's superbly integrated.

Berner Wine fair (cult wine tasting) (Bern,Switzerland): Excellent, complex nose with lots of smoked meat, stones, fruit, tar, tobacco. On the palate it cannot keep the promise of the scent. Quite the majestic showing tonight. Pebbery, cool, tight, yet quite complex already. This is an archetype of Côte-Rôtie, very young, still, but the lighter vintage allows drinking now, of you decant - and serve some red meat. (at Marchal, Årets Restaurant)

Medium garnet color, medium body, almost burgundy-like in weight; nose is light, shows just a bit of mature oak; palate is moderately rich, somewhat sweet and ripe, good acidity, round and smooth, blunted somewhat by oak treatment. No hard edges, very silky and polished, but the ripe sweetness is distracting, and the lack of any obvious complexity makes this little more than an uninteresting cocktail wine. Those seduced by the high scores and prices for this wine should seriously consider exploring the genre a lot more deeply to find out where Syrah's greatness really lies.

Saturday Night Double Blind, $40+ (Bin 75): Dark core with aged crimson rim; some ripe strawberries and cream off the bat, some oak, brambly fruit, red and dark, a green note which told me '04, Cameroun cigar, green coffee beans, nose seems like a mix of new and old school; velvety mouthfeel told me this was N. Rhone Syrah, a little black pepper, vanilla cram, plummy, dark cherry, ripe and seemingly a warmer region; not exactly as refined as you would expect from Cote Rotie but this was a nice wine; this probably needs more time; terrible QPR; called '04 Chapoutier Ermitage; 91+.

This is just so wonderful. I like it when its this fresh and almost burgundy like. Lots and lots of blue fruit and white pepper. Very complex and shows that this producer and this wine is among the best out there. Class and style in combination with power and complexity. People might want more from this wine which they can find in other vintages and possibly this had come short in a vertical tasting but if you just want a lovely wine to drink and enjoy, this is the wine.

La la la and Chris Ringland wine dinner (Jade Palace Restaurant): Deep ruby with glossy hue, slightly darker than La Mouline, has typicaly 5-8% Viognier. Vertical tasting of Guigal La Turque (Esperanto, Stockholm): Nose with cherries, some dark berries and sweet red berries, aromatic notes, slightly herbaceous with green notes. Elegant, the nose grew in the glass. Palate with rather ripe red berries including cherries, good concentration of fruit, some sweetness of fruit, some tartness, medium tannins, tart aftertaste with rather hard tannins. Young but approachable, on its way out of a “dumb phase”? 91-92+
The green notes in the nose clearly sets 2004 apart from the other vintages of the 2000s that were included in this tasting. It is a little lighter in style than 2006 and 2007, and considerably lighter than the two vintages it is sandwiched between, 2003 and 2005.

Guigal Masterclass Stockholm, 8 vintages of La Turque: Nose: Green! Very green, reminds me very much of most of the 2004 Bourgogne’s I've had. A bit hot, with alcohol/acetone on the nose. Secondary aromas lurking beneath with some wet forest floor, earth, faint smoke and more of the herbal green tones Palate: Green, some acid, white pepper, quite long but rather light finish. Not a top vintage of this wine.

Rather closed on the nose with some complexity already, more savoury than sweet. Mushrooms, dried herbs, smoke. Plush, sweetish, full-bodied. Cherry, blueberry, bacon, black pepper on the palate, rather tannic, rather harmonious in a way, with a balancing spiciness. Way too young. Very long, rather mineral, not too oaky compared to other LaLa's. Mineral spicy aftertaste, some refreshing tannins, quite interesting, but not truly convincing yet.

Mpls Wine Club: Highly Rated Rhones: Chave, Guigal, Usseglio + Poyferre & Cos (Shari's house): Dark red color. Dcanted for 2 hours. Drank 1 glass over 3hrs. The nose shows bright red fruits, red currants and berries, sandalwood, cedar, pepper, smoke, dry herbs, and flowers. The palate, like the color is more medium bodied and elegant in style, the flavors though are rich and the red fruits are lush along with the myriad of wood flavors and pepper that permeate the finish. Very fine tannins. This was quite a contrast to the power of the Chave, but was distint and wonderful itself. My #3 WOTN in a very close race for third.

Yes it is a syrah, but this wine is something special! It is not like the others wines. So much complexity, so refined, so harmonius. I can' t discribe with common words.

Tasted double blind.

A bit hot, with alcohol/acetone on the nose.
Secondary aromas lurking beneath with some wet forest floor, earth, faint smoke and more of the herbal green tones
Palate: Green, some acid, white pepper, quite long but rather light finish.
