Tasted vis-a-vis the Monfortino 1995, and while they are of course very different, they are wines in the same style. Other comments on this wine as being a "blockbuster", I beg to differ, this is very much Mourvèdre, very much 2004. Extremely intense, concentrated core of red fruit, has herbal and mineral notes, it's vibrant, elegant, almost en danseuse in spite of the concentration. Will keep my other bottle at least five years. #Enomania#HSA&Musse

Jim's Retirement Party (Libertyville, IL): I've had great bottles, mediocre bottles, and flawed bottles of this wine, and tonight's was in the middle. Very rich, bold and brash, but less complex or layered at this age than I expected.

Dinner at MingHin (Chicago, IL): Probably the best bottle of this that I've had so far. Ripe (but not overripe) fruit on the nose; more red than black, but amply sweet. We're talking sweet red plums kind of deal, not cherries or other berries. Opulent and luscious, this is a very large-scaled wine on the palate, with good acidity and some sweetness from the fruit. Moderately earthy and funky (as all CdP is), but more clean than not and readily drinkable. I think the tannins still have some ways to go towards softening, but this is a fantastic bottle of wine (and of course, one of the few CdPs I bother with at all).

This is a monster, when served the wine seemed closed. Kept my portion to the next day in a small flask and the wine came out of its shell. Explosions of fruit and power. Really good but still too young or needs to be decanted 4 or 5 hours.

Vinetasters: Brown Bag (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Very porty and almost pruney, to the point that a Valpolicella guess didn't seem far off. A little bit of a stewed tomato note and a bit of volatility as well. Perhaps slightly heat-damaged or otherwise flawed? This definitely wasn't at the level of a bottle a few years ago. Now I'm tempted to revisit one of my own bottles.

Closed nose at first, but really didn't open up much over time. Good balance rich, classic silky fine CdP, but blown away by the Chapoutier Ermitage Pavillon and the SQN. I didn't think a CdP of this stature could get pushed around by other wines like that. This was good but rather subdued and not as exciting as the others. Reading up on Hommage, others have noted that the tannins of the 60% Mourvedre wine could still be keeping this baby in the crib for a few more years. Try again in 5-7 years? Langham Hotel with Yarom, Larry, Seba, Jonathan
First the wine... after 30 min in decanter and 30 min in the glass, this really opened up. The nose was much better than the finish, but both were great. Not outstanding, but great. Now on to the experiment... If you look back to my tasting note on 12/17/16, I pulled two glasses out of this bottle via Coravin. Almost four years later, removing the cork, it was fresh as a daisy. I don’t care what the naysayers say about Coravin... it works. PERIOD!

BBQ and Top Shelf Vino (Chez Moll): Blind. I was convinced that this was a high-end Australian Shiraz. Rich black fruit in the nose with a nice medley of herbs, including mint, and what I swore was hints of American Oak. Herbs just fooled me, I think. Palate was plummy and rich with juicy acidity. Nicely balanced and suave.

Saturday BBQ (Chicago, IL): This is a heady wine on the nose, with plenty of jammy red and black fruits, but no sign of toast, coconut, or oak. It's a classically-styled hedonistic wine. The palate is definitely large-scaled as well, and the alcohol comes through on the finish, but the acidity here does help cut through all the thick extract on the palate. For CdP, this is very clean and perhaps a bit sui generis, but there's no denying it's really delicious.

High End Châteauneuf-du-Pape Dinner, Part 2 (Wear House): Single blind in flight. Open three hours before serving. Lots of black cherry, some berry on nose and palate. I was also at the vertical tasting and liked it better than some of the recent reviews, but I agree with their description that the wine there tasted a bit like a ripe Barolo. I have since bought some bottles and just tasted it tonight. Big difference to the wine at the tasting. Much more elegant and well rounded and in line with most reviews.

Chateau Beaucastel, Hommage à Jacques Perrin vertical (Zurich): This wine puzzled. Some liked it but many, including me, found it too ripe and oxidative. Lots of luvage and cooked fruit. Also heavy on the palate, with alcoholic heat on the finish. I wonder whether this was a representative bottle. This also had 15.5% Alc, among the highest. 88-92, depending on how much you subscribe this (over)ripe, borderline oxyidative/Rioja style.

TN: Lots of dark (plum, fig) and some red (strawberry?) fruit, baking spices, bacon fat, roasted herbs (rosemary), and a lot of CDP spices together with the above mentioned oxidative notes on the nose and the palate. Structure wise fully resolved tannins, ok freshness, with a tad excess alcohol.

Hommage à Jacques Perrin vertical tasting: Tasted as part of a Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin vertical (2015, 2014, 2013, 2011, 2009, 2007, 2004, 1999) with owner Matthieu Perrin hosted by Arvi in Zurich. Clear signs of oxidation overshadowed the fruit. Yet still fresh and more fruity on the palate with a good balance. The oxidative character receded more and more over time but then left a cellar / stable heavy profile. This was the weakest showing of the line-up - arhough I must also add some did like this almost Barolo-like version of Hommage.

Forward for Hommage Perrin, a wine that usually shows best with 20 years of age. Medium/full bodied, with a gorgeous nose of garrigue, barnyard and sweet kirsch, the tannins were ripe, soft and felt great. This will definitely improve, but if you're thinking you need to wait, pop a cork and enjoy the ride.

We were intellectually curious to see where this wine is currently. A bit of an experiment you might say. Pulled out two glasses with the Coravin to see where this wine is currently in its evolution. Had to let it warm up to room temperature and give it a bunch of aggressive swirls to get it to open up. After 30 - 40 minutes, the nose was really starting to rock, but the finish was saying that we awoke a beast that was sound asleep. If you have some of this in your cellar, let the beast rest for at least 5 - 8 more years and you will be rewarded. It is just not ready now. With more age, a higher score will be warranted.

Decanted an hour before serving. Black cherry and berries with raw meat to start, which transformed into smoked meat character with more air. Licorice, black pepper and dark chocolate galore. Surprisingly elegant. This wine leads with gorgeous kirsch, flowers, and smoke. It also reveals saddle leather, game, black chocolate, and cloves. Restrained and refined. Velvety, luscious, and sweet in the mouth. Ultra-smooth. The silkiest of tannins. Big but not huge. Finishes with sweet cherries, raspberries, and black tea.
This is a hard wine for me to rate because (1) I know the price and reputation; and (2) the style is very different from most CdP, including the regular Beaucastel bottling. I’ll take one more sip and say: 96

PnP from 750ml. This bottle was purchased at auction, and its capsule was missing (normally neither is a concern!), thus I was eager to sample it. This bottle showed very unlikely "flawed" but was likely simply underwhelming. Having had the '00 and calling it one of the Top 5 Wines I've Ever Had, this was a disappointment. That said, it's still better than most, but that's not enough at this price point. Stewed fruit and prune on the nose, the palate is deep and rich velvet, yet with very few distinctive characteristics. Just overall deep, satisfying and soothing, barely any heat showing. Medium-long finish. I feel compelled to rate this numerically, if only to alert CTers to potential pitfalls here. But I am certainly holding out much greater hopes for future bottles from this batch.
