Tart, full of citrus and grapefruit, mineral, lemonade, and some other nutty flavors; very much a blanc de blancs. Nice NV champagne and definitely a value in this price range.

No disgorgement date indicated on label (Strange having a Recoltant that does not declare it). Golden yellow with green hues. Some chalk, sea shells, dough. Thicker, weightier (I guess more minerality) and more vinous than Delamotte (another entry level Les Mesnil). Acidity supports the reserve wines used in this cuvee. Very strong bitter after-taste, a bit over the top and not fully supported by the rest of the structure. As it opens up such bitterness becomes a bit less problematic but still very evident. One of the ugliest labels I have seen on a bottle of Champagne.

Consensus note here. Checks all the boxes for an NV BDB. Biscuit, nutty and minerally. Citrus and limestone on the palate. Nice depth but remains precise. Would be very happy to have this poured any time, any day. 91-92

Clean, clear, pale straw yellow. Yeasty bread, some lemon curd. Lots of mousse. Dry, tastes like the nose. Medium-plus finish. Very good non-vintage 'fizz' for the price.

Much lighter than the NV Pol Roger and 2005 Dom Perignon, and so it was not a great idea to drink it after those two. Bright and tangy bubbles, a mousse impeccably fine and lively. Citrus and Chablis-mineral notes abound. The palate is clean and flavorful but lacks the individuality of the best NV blends. Despite this criticisms, a beautiful bottle in itself and would be best at the beginning of a flight.

Wildly divergent scores for this wine here on CellarTracker. My bottle tonight was a clear winner. Solid yeasty nose with a powerful nose of apples and pears. Rich creamy palate with suggestions of Gaia apple and hints of nuttiness on the back end. All supported by a solid backbone of acid age minerality. Recommend.
Based on the huge standard deviation of experiences, I suspect there’s a rotten batch of this going around — perhaps heat comprised or old bottles.

(Disgorged in February 2017, base year 2011, 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay) Light yellow colour with a greenish hue and an endless stream of fine bubbles. Lovely nose showing flint, lemon and a dried hay note in a still very youthful and fresh style. Palate filled with fresh citrus acidity and marzipan and a hint of mandarin peel bitterness on the long lasting finish. This was very fresh and youthful and perfect on this warm afternoon, but should evolve very nicely with some extra cellar time for sure... Best with 5-10 years of post disgorgement time.

Youthful nose with a medium intensity. Distinct autolytic character, yellow apple, lemon, toasted hazelnuts, nougat and hints of dried fruit and baking spice.
Medium bodied with a medium(+) acidity. Youthful and a bit tart on the palate. Medium(+) intensity with flavors of lemon juice, green apple, nuts and yeast. The finish is medium(+).
Didn't find any information about disgorgement but I think this have a base of 2011. Will improve with aging. Great QPR at €28!

Great character in this NV Brut BdB; tart, but vibrant, yeasty-biscuity, long, and well crafted. 30% more reserve wines in this than their regular Brut. 90-91 The 2008 BdB was very dry, tart, intense, aggressive acid. Needs time?

Pop & pour. Light golden color. The nose shows a slightly off-putting matchstick/smoke character mixed with brioche/yeast. The palate is initially light citrus & apples before yielding to a somewhat sweet marzipan note. Good acid/dryness balances the sweetness on the back end. Like it, don't love it.

Ended the evening with this wine; getting towards the end of a case bought in 2011. Drinking well, though starting to show some clear signs of age. I'm debating trying to drink the remaining few really soon, or leaving them and watching what happens with further age.
Some oxidative, maybe even mushroom type notes. Still nice acidity, really nice.

Very nice NV with strong toasted profile like Bollinger, Krug and Pol Roger. Turgy is more unpolished and sprawley, with some mature apples on the nose. Compared to Bollinger, the Turgy has a more distinct personality but less polished and coherent palate. All Grand Cru grapes from Mesnil, so the raw material should be in order! Great QPR!

Tiny bead of plentiful bubbles. Aromas of orchard fruit, a little stone fruit and some citrus with yeasty and minerally notes. A little austere at first, but it opened up to become more round and balanced. Good drive of acid and mineral with supporting yeasty bread notes. Good length. Shows itself as coming from the good neighborhood it is from, the last glass being the best, making me think that this will only improve with time. Didn't catch the disgorgement date of this. A great way to start the Thanksgiving feast!

Tech G's Birthday Bash (Reno, NV): Light color, aromatically a not very le mesnil... more apple and honey than citrus and minerals... mildly reduced style with no hints barrel use or malo... moderate lees and toast... on the palate not quite the cut of le mesnil either (lacks the very high acids and austere minerality I typically associate with this vineyard) being quite round and friendly... fine mousse. Balanced wine, ok length, good intensity, ok complexity... Has great finesse, a fine texture, classic expression of place. I was a bit disappointed in this... perhaps I was expecting something other than it was (I saw le mesnil on the bottle and was expecting le mesnil) and perhaps I hated the label... overall a very good "ripish chardonnnay" kind of champagne that has good qpr... wouldn't age it.

Reliable, tasty Chard-based Champagne: good balance, tasty fruit rightly spun by keen acidity and carbon-filled bubbles. I'm not among the Champagne cognoscenti, but at $35, in today's Champagne market, I don't see how you can go wrong with this wine, when fancy bubbles are on the agenda.

This captures the eye with its yellow gold color, but grates the palate with a rather coarse mousse. It’s not nearly as lacy as either of the Fourny wines. But is has a pleasant nose of apple, toast and orange zest. The finish is more mineral than biscuit flavors. Much crisper on the palate than the Fourny, but with a pleasing mouthfeel nonetheless. 12% alc. With oyster puffs and apple-horseradish sauce. Recommended.

WIML90+. I would have given this wine 91 points like Winetex but I already gave the Lancelot 91 points and I believe it's just a hair better than this excellent N.V. bottling. At price points like these (the Turgy and Lancelot) it make it hard to spring for the vintage bottlings. Good QPR here. Drink over the S.T.

Christmas Eve Dinner and Wine: I really liked this. Got us started tonight and was a great food wine. Pretty yeast and brioche flavors and crisp apple that I find so common for BdB from Mesnil. Very dry. I almost wondered whether it was zero dosage. I would buy this anytime.

Recent purchase with new label. Easy to see the difference between this and the bottle I enjoyed in July (a bottle with at least two years' age on it). This shows its youth in its fresh and lively profile, and the fruit has noticeably more power. Apple/pear flavors dominated, with notes of both stone fruits, a little bit of orange, and a little bit of toast. Nicely textured and full bodied. The older bottle was richly yeasty, this one seems more balanced and multidimensional. I thought that I liked Turgy's NV for that rich yeastiness (and I let them age a bit to get it), but this makes me think I should open them young. After all, the price is very reasonable for this quality.

The mousse from my bottle was clumsy, but the vinous nose of raw pasta, bread, and pear was nice. I found some solid acidity and minerality in the mouth, too, so I don't dispute that this is a clean and refreshing sparkler. Still, I think one can find more depth and complexity for $35.

One of my favorites. This is a bottle I've been holding a few years, and it was an especially rich, yeasty, creamy bottle. Janette remarked that the nose was like a bowl of yeast being activated in preparation for bread making. She loved it, I was just as happy when the yeastiness decreased, allowing notes of hazelnut, orange citrus, and brown spices to come through. Very full in the mouth, where it showed creamy pear flavors. Must find more.

No formal note. This bottle was from a recent shipment that I had not yet tried (I'm still drinking from a case purchased last Fall). As always, this is a real overachiever. Along with Diebolt-Vallois BdB, this has become my go-to $35 (prediscount) Champagne - at least among the Champagne options available in my local market. Unlike the creamier, more citrusy Diebolt-Vallois, Turgy's style is more yeasty / toasty. Nicely balanced. Impressive.

Bread dough on the nose, coupled with some floral, citrus, wet stones and a bit of smoke. On the palette I was met with tangerine, cream followed by lingering but subtle smokyness that creeps up from the back fo the toungue during a nice finish.

$27.19 retail, after discount. This is such a great value. I love Turgy's style of winemaking. Like the last couple bottles I've had, this is from the most recent shipment. Great freshness coupled with fine detail. It strikes such a nice balance between fruit, mineral and breadiness. Nothing that hasn't been said before (see previous TNs).

$27.19 retail, after discount. Though I'm pretty much sold on grower Champagnes, I've been trying to revisit some larger prduction NV cuvees that I haven't had in a while, just for comparison. Tonight, I opened Bollinger's standard cuvee (see TN). Just for comparison, I felt I had to open a good value grower Champagne side by side. I chose Turgy's NV Champagne from Mesnil, which cost me 40% less than the Bollinger at the same retailer. The Turgy had so much more happening on the nose - fresher, with more fruit; it seemed much more alive, in comparison (note: in-line with previous TNs). The Turgy had slight toast and bread notes on the palate, with more expansive fruit, and a more elegant mouthfeel. It was much softer and a little lighter than the rather four-square Bollinger ($44.79 retail). Now, I am certainly not claiming that every small grower Champagne will upstage any/all of the larger production NV cuvees, but my experience with many of the better ones is that often they will blow the doors off of the generally more expensive NV cuvees from the major Champagne houses.

$28 retail, after discount. Tasted side by side with the 1999 vintage bottling from Turgy (Yes, it does exist!). The aroma of the NV bottling is fresher and lighter, with a delicate floral element and almost peachy fruit, with a thread of citrus. The '99 has a quite a bit more toast / brown notes on the nose, with more linear, lemony fruit, compared to the riper more apple/peach fruit of the NV Turgy. On the palate the NV cuvee is soft and elegant, with gorgeous texture, and only hints of bread / yeast. The '99 is more assertive / substantial in both acidity and volume of flavor, finishing with a roasted nut quality, compared to the NV's lighter, creamier, lacier finish. Two very different wines, to be sure. Clearly, the NV Cuvee is made in a style aimed for immediate consumption, where the structure and muscle of the '99 suggests it will outlast it in the cellar, probably becoming even more nutty and perhaps more honeyed over time...? Note: For comparison, I also poured a glass of NV Guy Charlemagne BdB Champagne (also from Le Mesnil) left over from last night. Although it has its merits (see TN), it was my least favorite of the three, with hints of smoke and an almost burnt hair element to the nose. It comes across as less refined, with a more coarse structure to the palate, compared to the softer NV Turgy and the seemingly more well-constructed '99 Turgy.

Drunk with lunch in Epernay. Seemingly fresher and more vibrant than examples of this cuvee I've had in the US - with perhaps less earthy / brown components. Still, it did show a touch of its usual toastiness, coupled with fine acidity and very nice balance and texture.

(Disgorged in February 2017, base year 2011, 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay)
Light yellow colour with a greenish hue and an endless stream of fine bubbles.

Casual tasting at De Tapas (Dallas, Texas): Very solid wine, from the southern Champagne site of Mesnil sur Oge--good neighborhood. Classic, but not overwhelming. 89-91

Some Champagnes and a few reds (Columbus, OH): Early 1990s release. Toast, biscuit, and light coffee notes. Deliciously rich. Fine bead. Really showing very nicely now.

Lovely nose with lemon and nuts. Surpricingly full flavour with a long aftertaste of walnuts. Would never have guessd it to be a Blanc de Blanc. Perhaps a trait of the smaller bottle size.

Nice sparkler, still very primary, more yeast than toast.

Lots of tiny bubbles lead to a palate laden with citrus, yeast, and a hint of wet stone. This was a very enjoyable bottle of champagne that seemed to become tastier with each sip.

Impressive.

Vinsanity Tasting at Mekong in Richmond, VA (Mekong Restaurant, Richmond, VA): I'd had this before and enjoyed the return visit. Nice yeast and a little smoke on the nose. A good fresh feel in the mouth with a good mix of fruit and mineral.

Thursday, April 10, 2003 Yellow gold color. Somewhat coarse mousse. Nose of apple, pear, toast and orange zest. Similar on the palate, but with some, but not much, biscuit flavors. Good mouthfeel with an unctuous quality. Not a bad Champagne for $23. Mesnil on a budget.
