This wine was and it was not filling my expectations. As expected, it was displaying beautiful notes of ripe dark fruits and berries, herbs, pine-needles, tobacco, wet undergrowth and barnyard. It was much more acidic and fresh than I had expected, which was merely a good thing. However, I had expected the wine to be more fruity, thick and concentrated on the palate. Instead, the wine now made a rather medium-bodied, classical and balanced impression. This is certainly not a defect, but it is anyway a deviation from my expectations for Pegau and for Châteauneuf-du-Pape in general.
The wine is in an excellent condition right now: the tannins have resolved, but there is still plenty of nice and fresh fruit left.

Absolute stunner. This is open for business after a couple hours. There is modernity here, but it's appreciated by me given all the earthiness and herbal spice. Best bottle to date for me. I just love this wine.

Rhône or Nôwhere 2.0 (Malcolm, NE): Oh yes…gimme all them funky cherries and all dat black licorice. There were also Ferrara Red Hots®️and a generous hit of black pepper. I simply adore Pegau; for all of its unapologetic character and authenticity. This 2015 brought the business tonight and was smashing with cassoulet, Toulouse sausage and duck confit. Merci Charlie!

Decanted and drank over two days. Last drank this a little over a year ago. This bottle is the nicest I've had - the slightly bitter end is gone. Black fruit and some tar on the nose, white pepper black and blue fruit on the palate, nuanced taste. Medium tannin. This has evolved over the last year or so. I will wait another year for the next bottle. Best after 4 hours on day-1, diminishes slightly by day-2, but still good.

1 hour decant. Given the reviews (and price), I was disappointed. Certainly, this is a minority take but the wine wasn't overly expressive and had an slightly unpleasant finish - although it resolved somewhat over the evening and on Day 2. I'm hoping the next 2 bottles show closer to the high scores.

Pale ruby in glass with garnet hues. Medium plus intensity on the nose. Ripe figs, boysenberry, cinnamon and garrigue. Medium acidity and medium plus tannins that have been resolved. Well balanced for the warm vintage. Lingering finish.

Powerful and complex. Dark ruby color. Aromas of bramble berries, violets, lavender and fresh thyme. The palate is full of cherry/bramble berry/fig fruit with hints of smoked meat, baking spices, tobacco, black olives and tar. Tannins have softened beautifully. Concentrated and wonderfully balanced. Excellent!

Decanted for one hour. Nose of blackberry, tart red cherry, fig, black tea, anise and dried herbs. Blackberry, tart cherry, black tea, anise, fig, dried herbs and forest floor on the palate. Very long finish. Medium to full bodied. Served with apple smoked turkey and corn bread, sausage dressing.

Due to others who recently tried this wine, I opened one with a three hour decant. Lighter weight than the 2008 or 09, but distinctive Pegu. Back end was green pepperish which was disappointing. Am hoping this fades with time or perhaps I do let it decant as long.

Hmmm. Strange bottle. Not corked, but it seems flawed in some way. We drank it, which is a good sign, but. Taste of cellar. Still fresh and fruity though. Let’s see how the next bottle performs.

Nice wine. Reserved for a CdP. Understated ripeness or concentration but lots going on. Leafy herbs, dusty tannins, red fruit. Good acidity. Will age for at least a few more years.

Seems to be a lot of bottle variation with this vintage, but this bottle is really nice and is in a sweet spot. Notes of clove, garrigue, and black cherry.

some bottles are closing and some are in a nice early-drinking window. regardless, having seen this transform from "tasty" to "wow" after leaving overnight, it needs time/has some in-the-bottle developing to do.
pop a lesser bottle or something with less plumage left to sprout.
*it's not that the wine is currently harsh, unexpressive, or unintegrated. it's not even that the wine "needs" 20 years. I enjoy youthful CdP it's just that when a wine blossoms like that with air =that's a sign of untapped potential.

nicely aromatic, but mildly closed/closing in the big picture. savory elements (herbs, stems, supper roast) dominate the nose and palate more than black raspberry/red fruit. tasty and serious. Full and 14% abv, but not exhausting or heavy on the palate

Medium bodied, rustic styling, high quality natural cork.
Day 1 was lighter than it was four years ago, this desperately needs air - it bulks and unfurls with 24 hours recorked... revealing spicy red fruit, anise, and petrol on the nose. Palate brings heated red berries, spice cabinet, dried hard cheese, and when you exhale it feels stiffly mentholated like hard alcohol. Last glass was best. Enjoyable but needs serious time still... 2028+?

Decanted for 30+ minutes. Aroma: Pegau funk, strawberries, raspberries and eucalyptus. Palate: red fruits, herbal notes, grippy tannins, medium acidity with a medium-long finish. Pairing with a bavette steak softened the tannins. It’s currently not a well-balanced wine as the acidity is overpowered by the tannins of the wine. I’d give it another 5+ years before opening another bottle. 90-91

Had this Pegau with a grilled sirloin. Oh my. This 2015 vintage drinks really well, but still could use more time in bottle. Decanted for 90 minutes. This wine is a very complex with an excellent balance between muted fruit and herbs. Aromas cherry, plum, cranberry, tobacco and spices. Medium body with medium acidity and tannins which have softened over the past few years with flavors of herbs, berries, blueberries, stewed fruit and and figs. Earthy finish.

This aroma is so intriguing! Leather, medicine cabinet, duck meat! But also bramble fruitiness and wintery spices. Tight on the tongue, meaty, spicy, lovely. Tasted vis a vis the Charvin and in awe of the diversity of Châteauneuf. Both of them belong in the absolute top of the region! #Lau #Xmas

Wine Club Holiday Party 2022: First bottle of this in four years and I liked it just as much as I did back in 2018.
Medium ruby or purple. Ah there it is! Lovely Pegau funk! Just the right amount of savory animal and barn. Oh god yes. Palate has pepper, game, and just smells totally wild. Grippy but not overly structured to enjoy right now. This is so good. This will be going to amazing places over the next 5-15 years IMO. WOTN.

Not decanted, but I advise it. Iron, tea and dark fruit notes of currant and black cherry. Earthy and savory with tannic structure and acidic spine. Predictably good now but can hold for the hope of further development.

Drank over three days. Not really showing on the nose, perhaps a hint of dark berries and oak. On the palate, it's all oak at this stage. The tannin and acidity is in a nice spot, but the oak needs more time to integrate. If you like the Napa approach, it might be great for you right now. I will wait a couple more years until the next bottle.

4th Saturday Brown Bagger (EBCC): Double blind. Deep inky crimson color. Aromas of pine, spice and black fruit with a subtle medicinal undertone. Medium-bodied. Sappy red fruit, game and spice with a long finish. I thought southern Rhone from the outset, and settled on Châteauneuf. My first go with this vintage of Pegau, and it's excellent. 93+ pts. (R&D)

Nice, better than the 09, which was all over the place. This is more what you would expect from a big Chateau in a banner year, nice balance but still drinking young. Hold for now but this should be a beauty by the time it turns 10 years old.

This was a by the glass pour. It helped that the bottle had been open as it was seamless and giving with black cherries, plums, hot stones, roasted meats, licorice, black raspberries, violets, garrigue, funk, hoisin, and white pepper. The Full bodied feel is deep and balanced with youthful and silky, medium+ tannins as well as medium acidity. The structure is a bit deceiving at the moment as the tannins really sneak up on the back end. This is a classic Pegau and there is still some room for it to grow.

There is something seriously off, here. Two bottles, back-to-back are exactly the same...and taste like a Brunello with Brett. This isn't corked, rather something else. Dare I say, could this be a fraud? I won't slander the good stuff with a score that reflects my experience.
Seems to be opening up for business. Still young and should only get much better. As I wrote a few years back, if I smelled this blind, I would have said it was 10+ years old. This is classic, old-world styled CDP. Excellent wine here folks. Smells of garrigue, barnyard, mint, leather, cigar tobacco, dirt and some hints of flowers. Deep red in color with the tannins well present throughout. Light in texture (youth) with a taste of herbs, berries, blueberries, stewed fruit and and figs. It finishes with a long fade out of black tea and sweet cooking spices.

PnP. Consumed over a couple hours. Definite bricking. Nose started with distinct Pegau funk, blew off to a degree. Iron, green earth, tobacco, plummy raspberries on the nose. Silky, sweet, tart red fruits in the mouth with more of the rust and earth. Really great mid palate. Finishes short with some grainy tannins and bright acidity. Overtime the tannins took over. Bet this'll be something in another 5 years.

Warning. Either this bottle was a little off, or it is in a closed period. For the first 2 hours, the wine tasted like a glass of metal. By about 6 hours of airtime, it began to open up a bit and was actually quite good with food. The last bottle I had of this 2015 (4 months ago), I gave it a 94 as it was wonderful right out of the gate. This time not so much. At present, if you're looking to enjoy this wine, plan accordingly with a lot of air time.

What is not to love about this wine? The is true excellence in all respects. I have written many notes on this vintage, but I will add some new observations here... The aromas of eucalyptus (with apologies to the GF who refers to it as "band aid") reigns along with leather, cigar and pipe tobacco, moss, and sweet berries. While a tad sweet, that taste is more than made up by the additional tastes of raspberries, blueberries, stewed fruit, and figs. Some black tea and baking spices finish.

I’m going to up my score from when I opened up a bottle I tasted via Coravin in April. Getting to spend more time with the beautiful wine allowed me to appreciate the subtle floral notes that danced with the raspberry fruit. Always love the Pegau funk and this bottle had just enough of that earthy element that makes it feel like you’re in the vineyard.

Better than the bottle we had two years ago. Ruby colored in the glass. Nose that jumps out of the glass with garrigue, dark red fruits, spice notes and a touch of funk. Palate follows the nose with fruit herbs and spice dancing around. Lingering balanced finish.
Drank over three nights - most in your face night 1, night 3 a more mellow version of itself but still very good.
Paired wonderfully with simple grilled lamb chops on night 1.

Consumed over 3 days (vacuvined and refrigerated), note from day 3. This has tamed some in 3 days, but still an in your face wine on day 3. Appearance: Clear, medium garnet. Nose: Clean, high intensity with aromas noticeable a couple feet from the glass, classical Southern Rhone garrigue aroma with licorice, dillweed, and black olive with floral overtones - rose and violet. Palate: Clean, medium+ acid and tannin, relatively low 14.1% abv (for CdP), medium+ body, high intensity with flavors of garrigue, wild game, black pepper, and red fruit - cranberry with a long finish.
An outstanding youthful wine excelling in intensity, complexity, and length. There's so much stuffing here at the moment it's hard to balance everything out. Drink now with a long decant, better in 2-3 years and 10+ years thereafter.

Screaming Grenache. Raspberry, kirsch, cherry and white pepper. This is the sharpest, spiciest, purest, most red-fruited vintages of Pegau that I have ever tasted. This is not an easy wine, edgy, but quite pure, not over the top, precise, but powerful and assertive.

Decanted and drank over two days. Light-medium body. First day nose of black cherries and palate of white pepper and black cherries. Long finish with a touch of bitter at the end. Best after 3-4 hours of decant. Second day the nose and especially palate is reduced considerably. Really nice, drink it all after 3-4 hours of decant, at least at this stage. Would get a higher score if not for the bitter on the finish.

Seeking help here. As I experienced with my previous bottle, and Cab_Fran, Cbuhlman, and Swapdoc reported, this was another lightweight. It was better than my previous bottle but still easily the weakest vintage of Pegau I've had. It just tastes completely watered down, like taking the weak 2011 vintage and diluting it with water.
So... What can cause this? Someone told me heat damage, but that usually leads to stewed flavors and this has so little flavor I would actually welcome stewed fruits. All advice is appreciated.
I defer to my earlier two reviews adding that this is just simply a fantastic CDP. Classic in all the right ways. Heavy, but not overly sweet or think. A real pleasant wine on its own or with food. Tannins are giving way to a bold bodied wine with cedar and dark fruits, cassis, blackberries, leather, tobacco and earth on the palate. So well balanced. Super smooth finish.

Not yet ready, and I'm concerned about where it might be headed. While it smelled like a Pegau, it was thin, light, and unimpressive. Very little fruit and nothing distinctive. Pales next to the 2003, 2007, 2009, and 2010. I hope it picks up weight with age.
Bottle 3 of the pandemic shut-in. We were disappointed by this 2015 Pegau, largely agree with CBUHLMAN’s recent note. There was a barnyard funk here that never went away, even with 3 hr decant on night 1 and again on night 2, and the wine was flat beyond the barnyard thing. It was drinkable (barely), but nothing of the raspberry, spice, and layered flavor that I’d expect from this level of CdP producer. Hoping for much more from subsequent bottles.

Recent reviews by some on CT had me curious about how these were evolving so I had to check in myself and personally assess, you know, for science. Popped and poured; consumed over three days. The first day was OTT with red fruit and spices...but mostly the fruit. The spices, really sort of a one-note black pepper bomb, pricking the tongue, perhaps giving a glimpse of something more interesting if patience was exercised. Super clean with no signs of brett. I was almost taken aback because this was coming across rather ham fisted and definitely an outlier for Pegaü. I say almost. Two days later, I revisited the remaining half of the bottle and that’s when things really started to show off. Chewy red and black fruits were still very much in abundance but they were now more delineated and showing somewhat grainy tannins which seems much more pronounced now than they were on the first night. Think the texture of eating a mouthful of brambles. The spices that were teasing on the first night were stepping up to play a more pronounced role taking on more of a black licorice character with some lovely garrigue on the nose to match. Sound structure...though perhaps not as impressive as the 2016 Cuvée Réservée. Long, lip smacking finish though...and really delivering the goods! Based off this experience, I would imagine the best is yet to come for the 2015 Pegaü. If you’re drinking on the pop and pour, prepare for disappointment. These could use some time. I look forward to revisiting in 2025 and beyond.

SWAPDOC absolutely nailed the review of this wine. with all credit going to him... " disappointing wine. Could not find traditional southern Rhone characteristics in this wine -- tasted none of the hot earth, olives, raspberry, lavender. More of a slick, generic, polished Italian merlot. The fruit tasted under-ripe, thin, and covered up by slightly astringent wood tannins. Didn't feel like more years of cellaring would magically endow this wine with what is lacking now"-- a sense of place.
This is by far the worst Pegau I've had..and this based on 2 different bottles. Not sure what they're doing over at Pegau, but this is nothing like 2001, 2007 or 2009
I was surprised to find the 2015 Pegau so elegant and light-footed - but then again, this is one of Chateauneuf's great charmers. Kirsch and garrigue on the nose, with an appealing savory note reminiscent of dry aged beef and cracked black pepper developing with time. The garrigue, lavender, and supple fruit on the palate come across as fresh and promising. This is labeled at 14% ABV, but the wine is balanced and it doesn't feel hot. Pure finish. Having written this note and only now looking at the critic scores, I wonder if the wine was more exuberant shortly after bottling?

Based on others tasting notes decided to decant this to hopefully help open it up a bit. Brilliant ruby in the glass. The nose seemed ever changing throughout the night with notes cherries, mint, dried herbs, tobacco, chocolate, and anise at different points. Silky and dense on the palate. However, during the first hour or so the palate and finish were completely medicinal and not enjoyable. Shortly after an hour though the medicinal element disappeared and let sweet fruit and other elements from the nose come through to a well balanced and lingering finish. Complex and changing as the evening wore on, I think patience and a longer decant needed if drinking at this point. Definitely see upside potential in the coming years.

Rustic, medium bodied. Anise and bramble stand out, raspberries, blueberries, dry pine forest, pepper, meat, soil. Perhaps some Barolo/Brunello-like cherry qualities. Plays out as sweet fruit grounded by savory.
Possesses the balance and fineness of tannins make it drinkable today, with obvious improvements to come as it unfurls its secrets over a decade or two. Cellar until 2026+.

Generous nose of blackberries, allspice, herbs and yes, barnyard. What follows in the glass certainly delivers the promise on the nose. Big bold, dark fruit, leather, savoury herbs and yes again the signature Pegau funk. A sexy and stylish wine that is very easy to appreciate as a wine lover and even easier to just plain drink. I can only imagine what this will taste like in 5-10 years once all the components come together even more than they already are today, but for now an easy 95 point wine.

An amazing young Pegau. Already settled since last year. Aromas of garrigue, red fruit, sweet spices and wet gravel. On the palate, this wine is lush, with flavors of ripe red fruits, lavender, sweet spices, black pepper and the typical Pegau earthiness. Kept on getting better and opening up over the evening. Great with mushroom and onion pizza! This is one for the cellar. Drank our last 98 which was amazing and this one will surely last for another couple of decades. Best since 2009.

This is obviously very young but has a lot of potential. It is elegant and well structured with a nice finish. Lots of red fruit like cranberry, plum and dark cherries on the nose with some raspberry and nose replays on the palate. Refreshing acidity and yet has a long deep blackberry and red plums aftertaste. Give this another 6-8 years before it begins to sing.

The 2015 'Cuvée Réservée' is an absolutely gorgeous showing and one of the most compelling wines from the vintage. It begins with beautiful aromatics of ripe cherries and raspberries which are woven together with exotic spices, smoke meat, floral and a touch of garrigue all taking shape. The medium-plus bodied is backed by a remarkable round, velvety texture, along with a lovely seamless quality as it expands beautifully across the palate. It continues to impress with its excellent overall balance and depth as it leads up to the incredibly long finish which leaves a lasting impression. While already extremely appealing, this sensational Châteauneuf-du-Pape shows the potential to evolve gracefully well beyond a decade. (Best 2019-2035)

The bouquet was remarkably pretty and fresh, with dusty dried florals up front, giving way to ripe strawberry, cherry, sweet herbs, minerals and hints of undergrowth. On the palate, I found soft-silky textures, enlivened by zesty acidity with a mix of spicy ripe red fruits, minerals and herbs. The finish was long with masses of inner florals lingering admist hints of dried cherry and strawberry fruit.

Still like the 2013 better. Nothing super complex and the smells and flavors that are there aren't super intense either. Still a good wine for the price though.
I get flowers, savory herbs and raspberry with moderate tannins and on the finish licorice.
Somewhat between the very characteristic 2012 and the very rich 2013.
Clos Du Papes is more my style even though it's 40 dollars more.

A disappointing wine. Could not find traditional southern Rhone characteristics in this wine -- tasted none of the hot earth, olives, raspberry, lavender. More of a slick, generic, polished Italian merlot. The fruit tasted under-ripe, thin, and covered up by slightly astringent wood tannins. Didn't feel like more years of cellaring would magically endow this wine with what is lacking now -- a sense of place.
PnP. Pepper and cured meat. Licorice and purple florals. Explosively good palate with lots of vigor. Medium in body. Burst of fruit. Tannins are not aggressive but certainly there. Palate gives off some firewood, some red berries. Lots of licorice on the palate. Espresso. Finish is medium plus.
Terrific and a pleasure to drink. Also tremendous on day 2 after being vacuumed and stored in the cellar.
Showed good versatility as held up fine to a big grilled cheddar burger on night 1, and a chicken and shrimp gumbo (not very spicy) on night 2.
Glad I have more of this one.

Decanted for 30 minutes. Dark garnet in color, this wine reveals olive tapenade, cracked black pepper, lavendar and saddle leather on the nose. The mouth feel is full bodied with tight tannins and tobacco and black tea undertones. The finish remained tight, even with an initial decant and 60 minutes in the bottle. 14% abv.
Purchased for $70US, this wine needs more time to develop and evolve. Drank alongside the 2005, it was an excellent contrast to the one already in its prime drinking window. Drink 2020+.

Yowza, DAT's a Chateauneuf! Still very young but a killer already. We got toffee and a long, long finish with some tannin. I'm thinking 99 in 4 or 5 years, I'm writing 2022 on the label of the one I have left. Why didn't I buy more??

2015 Chateauneuf du Papes (Lou's): Purple in color with some ruby swirls. Lovely nose with spices and black cherries. Open initially, it shuts down and then slowly opens in the glass. Clean. On the palate, this is very tannic right now. Juicy black cherry fruit. Deep but tight. Delicious wine that is tasty today but really needs a few years to develop. Certainly a point or three of upside potential.

Oh this is where it’s at. Earthy but not over the top. Very traditional compared to more modern CdP like Janasse etc. Dark dark fruit. Finish goes on forever. Very complex. Need to buy some.
Tasting pour , with Laurence Feraud. Big , tannic and young but with lots of dark fruit, mineral, spice, blackberry and promises to be terrific in several more years. Finishes nicely with smoked meat, cherries and then black pepper at the very end..

I'm hoping the next 2 bottles show closer to the high scores.

pop a lesser bottle or something with less plumage left to sprout.
*it's not that the wine is currently harsh, unexpressive, or unintegrated. it's not even that the wine "needs" 20 years. I enjoy youthful CdP it's just that when a wine blossoms like that with air =that's a sign of untapped potential.
