Nose of bruised apples, light yeast, and saline. Gentle stream of very fine bubbles. I could define racy acidity with this wine - it dominates the sip from start to finish. Palate of tart green apples, lemons, underripe pineapple, tart stonefruits, and minerals. Long structured finish veering back to green apples, lemon zest, chalk, and a bit of stonefruit.
Absolutely lovely even though I was expecting more. It felt a bit liner, but I found it to be a lovely package. Refreshing and uplifting.

2 years since our last bottle. Has a little honey on the nose which I don't think I noticed last time, perhaps starting to give a little hint to its age. After that still a ton of citrus with crisp acidity. Definitely better as it warms up and gets some air so keep it away from those flutes! :)

Louis Roederer Brut Nature Champagne (Philippe Starck) 2009
Gratulerer med dagen Happy Constitution Day
At restaurant Les Avisés in Avize. Superb stuff, which has it all. Full body, creamy texture, structure and a bucketload of sweet extract from the ripe and rich 2009 vintage. This is neither austere at all nor is it ponderous as the acidity is also surprisingly racy. Almost seven years after degorgement this has matured into a very nice place, being open and expressive without any signs of fatigue. Aromatically it is about leesy and mineral notes and there is also some subtle toasty vanilla from the barrel. Fruit is no longer prominent and despite two thirds Pinot Noir I would say it tends more to the yellow spectrum. The finish is rich, racy and mouth-cleansingly mineral. Drink until 2026+

Nice nose of fresh yellow apples, hint of vanilla, taste is deliciously creamy, still quite young, very nice Champagne of one of my favourite producers!!

As soon as I saw the label, I thought “hey I think Frank Murray just posted a note on this wine!”. This came after a Tissot sparkling wine and this was much different. That was more bruised apple and coarse, where this showed finer, with lots of energy, citrus, and light toasty accents. Refreshing and very good.
Clean, focused, pure dough, green apple notes. Weighty palate, fine bubbles. Hints of sweetness at this stage, balanced by zesty citrus acidity. Curious about further evolution.
Happy New Year!

Classic Roederer nose albeit less reductive and austere than the 2013 that I had previously. Read that this inaugural release was the best and I can see why. Great balance of ripe citrus fruits and red apples, good weight without being over the top.

Grower Bubbly Event #2: Second bottle this summer. Tasted over 2 days. This bottle shows a zesty, complex leesy quality, with plenty of flint, pear and green apple. Nothing short on flavor here and at 13 years old, plenty fresh and delicious. Probably time to go out and find some 2012 and 2015 to see how these show.

Friday evening in diessenhofen. Pale lemon color. Pineapple, citrus, wet stones, hay on the nose, not very pronounced. Med+ acidity, med body, med alcohol, Med flavor intensity and med finish. This is still young, a very subtle dry and lemon taste. Nice minerality, pineapple, citrus, peach, all very light touch. Missing some more pronounced taste and flavors.

Meant to be bone dry, but there was the perception of sweetness, probably due to the ripeness of the fruit. Good acid, good length. A very good champagne - but will it age (i.e. last 30 years from vintage)?
Had at a restaurant. PNP - citrus notes were present. As it opened the nose/flavor profile changed to nutty and then to mushroom/earthy. Very enjoyable.

I followed through on finding more of this, smitten by the last bottle from a few weeks ago that was shared with me. $85 US plus some CA tax was what I paid. You know, it's worth every damn bit of that price, too. After 2 bottles of this now, I feel comfortable saying that this is elite stuff, the kind of Champagne that excites me. The cepages are 1/3rd each PN, PM and Chard and while I don't have any disgorge info (why can't Roederer do this for a cuvee made in this intention?), I believe it sits sur latte for at least 5 years. There is a leesy aromatic, with some wood toast (this sees 25% wood) along with a floral note. The palate is gorgeous, lemon and tangerine, plus peach framed by power from the spine of the wine, along with a bitter lemon, almond and an earthy kind of mushroom note that is subtle yet underpins the finish. Finally, a wet slate note with saline cleanses through the finish....just gorgeous. Yep, there ain't dosage here and it's just fine with me as that's just about all I drink and buy these days (BN and EB) but some may find this wine more linear as a result. Yet, I believe this wine succeeds because of the energy, texture and brightness that is portrays, in spite of the missing dosage. For me, that's its beauty and in total, a wine of the year candidate for 2022.
Kutch Verticals--Trout Gulch, McDougall and Falstaff: Second time I have had the 2009. I've really enjoyed it both times. 1/3rd Chardonnay and the rest Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir from Cumieres. No dosage. Lemony, with a creamy edge and wet stone. Crisp yet with a good imprint of fruit. I really like how the acidity freshens the wine, adding the lift. This just hits me perfectly, right in the lane for the Champagne style I like to drink--balance, medium weight, bright, all the descriptors I end up when I have a really good Champagne in my glass.. I'm going to break down this week and get some locally that continues to be available. There is also 12 locally so time to revisit that, and I see now that the 2015 is coming out. Truthfully, and I mean no negativity or faint praise, but I would rather drink this Starck bottling than Cristal.

Beautiful interplay of fresh and cooked fruit, nuts, honey, flowers, fungus and minerals, a powerful but very fine mousse, easy acids for non-dosé but there's great cut and plenty of freshness. Long and very dry, quite stony and earthy, though that fresh and cooked fruit combo resonates as well. This might just improve for another decade, but you will not go wrong opening it now.
Lemon, lime, green apple. Interesting how quickly the bubbles disappear, not sure what that means for long term aging? No worries now though as it’s delicious.

Had a discussion with my wine dealer regarding the ageabilty of low dosage wines and this worried me a bit so I had to check how the wine evolved so far.
At first a quite evolved nose, some autolytic toasty character followed by ripe apple. The taste was slightly dry/austere like I remember but whereas some years ago it was brutally austere without sooo much character it showed some unexpected flavours of oaky, sherry like undertones.
In any case I left the wine to breathe for one day and continued on the next day.
And oh what a difference… super intense apple, dry but now much much more harmonious integrated. Whereas before it was slightly mineralic and lemon profile it now showed a glorious Pinot driven frutiness. A bit more time and it doesnt even feel that dry anymore with all that fruit.
Over the evening it also showed a lot of different notes on the bouquet…. a bit fruit compot with vanilla…
Overall still wondering regarding the aging trajectory here. Certainly quite a different wine than at the beginning. I definitely enjoy this much more now. Lets see how long it can evolve in a nice way.
This was very dry and stark. Unripened citrus, tart, chalky and high acidity. Not picking up a lot of fruit despite the warm year. I prefer other no-dosage champagnes, but it may just need more time.

One Variety -- 3 Price-Points, Blind (Los Olivos, CA): Served blind in a flight of three of the same grape variety: one inexpensive, one, mid-range and one high-end. A clean and taut style I quite liked, with fine minerality complementing the yeasty brioche notes. Head and shoulders above the two other bottles in the flight, both NV Roederers (one from Cali and one from Champagne).

Bracing acid, lovely fruit and a very substantial mouthfeel - this is a formidable champagne indeed. Subtle white flowers and lovely minerality rounds this out. Paired sinfully well with gourmet (read: expensive) caramel popcorn.

This wine is gorgeous, delicate bubbles, room filling aroma, and notes of lemon juice, lemon zest, white blossoms, peach, slate, green apple, toast, and honey. The acid is on the fringe of too high, so the second bottle is good for a few more years in the cellar.

Light gold color. Nose of biscuit, a bit of ginger, Parmesan, apple core, grapefruit, white floral notes. Vinous and laced with granny apple and lemon lime on the palate, cut with fresh acidity and brisk yeasty elements. Long finish of granny apple and bread notes cut with stony spine. Amazingly fresh wine showing very well tonight.

Fragrant with a yeasty melange of apple, pear and lemon scents that lead to a sharp, burst of mouth coating, lemony citrus notes that turn biscuity on the long drying finish.

Tasted at the Wine and Spirits Top 100 Symposium in NYC. 3 grape blend (40% Pinot Noir 40% Chard and 20% Pinot Meunier, I think) with zero dosage. I had the 2012 a couple months ago and thought that was excellent, this bottle did not seem right to me. Perhaps mishandled or something but this was not together and seemed very disjointed.

This was fine. I was worried it would be a bit screechy next to the regular 2009 vintage but we were eating by then so it had food to buffer. I'd happily drink this again but don't think I'll buy any for my cellar.

Dauvissat & Raveneau Dinner (Shaw's): Taste from a bottle opened the night before. Big chalk-filled nose and very steely in flavor profile. Body wise this was a bit flat on day two, and therefore hard to assess.

Inaugural mensual 17th dinner (Nico Osteria) (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. I liked the nose more than the palate here. There's a really interesting mushroom element here that made me think that this was pinot heavy. The palate is a little lean relative to the other two Roederers in the flight, but it still has a good breadth (which in hindsight after the reveal makes sense, given the vintage). I liked this the least in the flight of three; not a bad wine, but just not quite my preferred style.

Casual evening at Maison Dakota. Pop and poured. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Big bubbles. Thin legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with immediate fruity aromas of red apples, green apples, golden pears, ripe citrus lemon, some bready yeast. Developing. On the palate, dry, rounded high acidity, medium- alcohol (12%), medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of fruity red apples, green apples, golden yellow pears, citrus lemon, brioche, honey nuts and bits of cream with more air. Long finish. Very good quality. Certainly one of the ripest fruitiest real champagnes I have tasted before. No need for dosage! Serious stuff, but I find myself hard to take this so seriously as it is so playful and exuberantly fruity. Why wait to drink when this just wants to play so badly? Though I would like to see how this ripe vintage champ evolves over the next few years. Fruit from Cumières, on unusual clay soils. A field blend of 55% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Meunier. (Although the bottle itself says 2/3 Pinot Noir, 1/3 Chardonnay) Co-pressed and co-fermented. Bottled in June 2010 and disgorged in May 2016.

Beautiful summer wine, tiny bubbles and a bright acidity — citrus, green apple, lip-smacking and delicious. I've enjoyed on its own, but even better when paired with fatty dishes (think bone marrow, bluefin tuna, etc).
Comes from a 25-acre, mid-slope block in Cumières composed of three certified biodynamic parcels (Le Clos, Chèvres, and Pierreuses) acquired by Maison Louis Roederer from Leclerc-Briant. The three varieties are all picked on a single day and are then co-fermented with indigenous yeasts. Great effort from Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon at CLR, this is his second iteration of the cuvée. Brut Nature 2012 will come out in October 2019 with a rosé addition to the range.
Light slate golden with restrained bubbles. Nose lightly nutty golden dried fruit, some slate minerals. Palate cool fleshy peach, tart acidity. Strongly mineral. Lean in some respects but still nice fruit and overall a balanced impression to my palate, I think the ripeness/forwardness of the vintage marries well with the leaner approach of the winemaking. Young to my taste. Great with lobster prepared in a Chinese fashion. 92 pts

Blind: WOTN - light yellow color hides what's to follow. Aromas of unripe yellow apple, anise, and light white toast. Palate of green apples with a hint of sweetness as the finish. No dosage, go figure. The finish is very long. I wrote "very good". Excellent.

Medium gold, small beady bubbles. Rich with a little funk nose - magnolia, lime zest, seashells, gold apple. Brut nature is evident but it’s not extreme or austere - lemon peel, saltine cracker, raspberries but it misses a little depth or non linear evolution.

I still can’t enough of this wine. For a Brut nature it has very good depth of mineral, flint, chalk and citrusy notes. Very well made and for $70, while not cheap, can hold its own.

A bit closed up in the beginning but opens up with some decanting or time in the glass. Good but not harsh accidity and power to possibly go some more time in the cellar. Fruit and minerality nicely balanced and quite the long finish. Nicely done...

Really enjoyed the bone dry nature of this wine. Very very minerally, with hints of schist and lime skin, finish was longer than one would expect with lingering tart lemon verbena, wet stones, flint and graphite. One of the better Brut natures I have experienced.

This is a bit austere at the moment on its own and benefits from matching with food. This went well with sushi. It will likely unwind as it ages, so perhaps one to age a bit further.

This wine needs to be consumed with the right food. In my case it went well with sushi after really waking up the palate as an apertif. Extremely fresh and obviously great acidity searing and cleansing the palate. Not hugely complex flavors of lemon and a lingering finish. Definitely seemed even leaner with air and as the richness of the meal picked up. Interestingly, drinking it with the sushi meal made the food taste sweeter / more flavorful, and the wine less so. Started quite pleasurable, though the acid started to wear a bit towards the last few drops of the bottle. Certainly not a wine for everyone. Hold last bottle until 2020.

A marmite champagne you either love it or hate it, I’m the latter. Dosage in a brut champagne isn’t to sweeten it, but to provide balance and I’m afraid that with zero dosage this champagne lacks that balance and complexity - something is noticeably missing

There seem to be to camps here, the lovers and the “hater”. Honestly I’m with the latter. Ok champagne but for €65 you may expect a little more. Pretty one dimensional, some apple, underlying minerality and that distracting sour note in the finish, which has been mentioned earlier. I guess it all comes down to preference. For me this under delivered considerably.

It is a refreshing bomb after a lot of wines. Your palate gets abruptly cleaned. Your senses are sharpened. Salinity pure but the ripe fruits give a nice counterpart that your mouth is not only filled with chalk. Not that good as 2008 but surprisingly elegant and clean in the late-palate. 92

Not impressed by this wine. Good, but a little more mineral and apertif style than I like. Less oxidative, briosh, and body than I prefer. Honestly, I feel like this could have used dosage. Slightly distracting sour note. The strong acidity and the limited fruit make it difficult to know how long until this will be mature.

I usually like to try to come up with my own words to describe wine but I'll borrow this one from AG. This is compelling stuff. Light medium straw in color I get a lot of aged yeast characteristics on the nose that gives away and older champagne. Incredible acid and minerality on the palate create a terrific tension - it's a joy to drink.

Rather low nose, with earth tones, twigs, apple skins; very dry, not exactly my favorite of this tasting. From v.y. in Cummiere, south facing, very warm, thus able to make a zero doseage, but only in best vintages for non-dose: '06 and '09. fermented in wood, no malo, S. facing (over the Marne). Roederer is one of the largest growers/owners of vineyards for an NM: uses all estate fruit in all wines, except Brut Premier.

2017 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/16/2017-10/25/2017 (New York City, NY): A relatively new offering from Roederer, the Starck Nature 2009 is a zero-dosage, bone-dry Champagne that contains one-third Chardonnay, with the remaining two-thirds made up of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. With 25% primary barrel fermentation but no malolactic fermentation, it is a complex yet very fresh sparkler with an active, tiny bead. Straw-colored and highly aromatic, it serves up a combination of pit fruits, citrus, almonds, hazelnuts and brioche. Light-bodied, it delivers flavors mirroring the nose, accented with saline notes on the lengthy, vibrant finish. This Champagne offers lots of verve from beginning to end. Enjoy it over the next 6-7 years. Drink now-2024.

Champagnedagen 2017 (Grand Hotel): Still very youthful showing oak, flowers and citrus at first and opening up showing caramell. Very youthfully austere acidic palate filled with citrus and yellow apple and a long finish showing bitterness. After som time in the glass warming up showing more oxidative notes of mature apple. This cuvée is showing a very youthful and tough taste right now and need a couple of years to settle down. The lovely acidity will last for ages, but I wonder how balanced it will be with the oxidative notes already showing so much. Time will tell, but probably at its best 2024-2029.

The nose shows medium intensity, slightly austere, citrus, some nutty notes, a bit of brioche, warm profile altogether with a nice “cooked” sweet nuance (like caramel of butter).

Meant to be bone dry, but there was the perception of sweetness, probably due to the ripeness of the fruit. Good acid, good length. A very good champagne - but will it age (i.e. last 30 years from vintage)?

(Although the bottle itself says 2/3 Pinot Noir, 1/3 Chardonnay)
Co-pressed and co-fermented.

Excellent. 92 pts

I was not overwhelmed byt this champagne. It is good but lacks of subtility and is clearly not worth the price

2017 K&L Annual Champagne Tasting (K&L San Francisco Store): K&L Champagne Event 2017, tasted after Cristal, nose of lemon, red apple, toast, and minerals, same on the palate, medium/big body, good acid, showing well, needs 3 years to peak, long finish.

1997 Amarone Horisontal + Quintarelli (Copenhagen): Lots of red apple fruit but also a piercing acidity with a lovely bitter touch in the aftertaste.
Very lovely wine but should age a bit more to allow it to settle down a little bit.

Tasted at large walkaround tasting. really nice white grapefruit and citrus zest. almost has a limeade character (I love limeade, so not a knock!). Green apple shows through. Some hazelnut notes. Bread dough. Biting acidity on the finish.

Trelio with the fellas again (Clovis Ca.): What a treat! Crazy intense citrus here...hurts so good! Sour tart lemon heads, crushed minerality, somewhat creamy almond mousse, apricot creme, blossom florals, biscuit...really dry. Thank God for the 09 ripeness as it at least gives some depth to the intenseness. This gained on me...fun stuff!

Precise, fresh and interesting. Much better than the 2006 Brut Nature.

Champagne vs. the Greek Meal: Very nice, long taste lemon(ish). I thought it may have needed more time to open up, maybe even decanting? (postscript- it turns out few others were thinking about it too. I'd try it next time).
(90 or more, but it was part of a long and competitive line)

Louis Roederer Masterclass (Afros & Fisalides Wine Fair, Grande Bretagne Hotel): 34% Chardonnay, 66% Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier. 25% of the wine was fermented in oak barrels, no malolactic, 60 months sur lies, 6 more months maturation after the disgorgement, dosage 0gr/lt.
The nose shows medium intensity, slightly austere, citrus, some nutty notes, a bit of brioche, warm profile altogether with a nice “cooked” sweet nuance (like caramel of butter).
The palate shows high intensity and acidity, clear citrus flavors, fresh, nice carbonation, med body and med to long finish.
