Opened and decanted for one hour prior to pairing with pizza. A slightly light orange-inflected ruby in the glass, the nose beckoning with cherry, damp leaves, leather, and suggestions of both rose petals and orange rinds. Tannin largely mitigated, this had very good acidity and intensity. Probably at peak now or just past, owing to a touch of oxidation. Was an unusual but very good pairing for the pizza.

Fantastic. Very pure, clear, bright and lightweight. Delicious tangy fruit, good structure, and perfectly balanced. Not flabby or over-ripe at all per the supposed vintage profile. Yum. Started drinking this vintage in 2013, best yet now with maybe more to come. (note: When I tried this wine first in 2017 I had the impression it was over-oaked. No hint of that now).

This was a lovely Barbaresco, even ‘pretty’. There was a delicacy to it-kind of middle weight-with nice dark cherry and currant flavors, some moderate leather, subtle tannins, but enough for structure for balance and interest. We enjoyed it, especially after a 1/2 hour of decanting and it achieving the right temperature after being pulled from the wine cabinet.

Decanted for a couple of hours to no major effect. Savory, herbal and leathery on the nose with quite plentiful dark cherry fruit and a prominent note of tar. Expressive, if not terribly vivid. Fairly rich on the palate with ripe but not overripe fruit. The attack is classic and attractively bright but midway through some heat starts to emerge and the finish is tannic and quite drying. I think this wine perfectly captures the vintage, i.e. while seemingly well made and very recognizable the heat definitely comes through and renders the finish rather harsh. Happy to try it but finishing the bottle is not a realistic goal.

Not really digging this bottle. Youthful, superficial without much going for it. There are sappy red fruits and a bit of earth on the nose - promising. The palate is overly tannic and tight with a tremendously bitter, palate searing finish. This will either be great in 20 years or it’s a hot mess. I am putting my money on the latter. I have a bunch left so will be interesting to follow. I’m thinking this is destined for stew. (83?)
After the poor showing, I put a cork in the bottle and came back 4 days later. The wine has improved but still has some flaws. Gone are the harsh tannins. Things have rounded a bit but seems a bit superficial. If you have some bottles, I say open well m advance. May improve with 3-4 years of cellaring. (87)

Opened in advance of a pairing with a Northern Italy milk-braised pork loin dinner. Initially, a light ruby hue with orange highlights, the aromatic nose features black cherry, red alpine currant, and hints of tar and leather. Medium-bodied on the palate, with the aforementioned notes, amidst fine drying tannins. Subsequently double decanted over 4 hours.
And... this has opened up beautifully! A wonderful pairing with the dinner. Darker in the robe, now medium-bodied, and still featuring black cherry, red alpine currant, leather, light tar and a decidedly orange rind finish. The previous dry tannins now dealt with, this is cooking on all cylinders! Glad to have a bottle or two left.

My first bottle of this was in December 2017 and my second January 2019. Both bottles were medium bodied and had lots of somewhat powerful dark fruits. They were a bit disjointed, a bit sweet/over-ripe, and had a tiny bit too much oak showing, but they were still very nice. The fruit disappeared after 2 hours. The current bottle has lost quite a bit of the fruit, but has a little left (berries, tar, roses), is light bodied, a bit acidic, and still ok to drink. Not much tannin. Popped and poured, so not sure what would happen with air. Provenance: purchased from merchant in 2017, so who knows how well these were stored the first 10 years.

Rather dense, with typical Nebiollo bricking. Beautiful smokey, roasted black cherries, are just haunting on the nose. Rather full bodied, similar captivating impression on the palate. Good length. An outstanding representation of the genre at this point in its life. Got 10 years easily, but will not get better. Fantastic value (upon release).

Given the vintage, this wine is nicely balanced and quite fresh/lively. Ripe, but not overripe, red fruit on the nose, with just a bit of unresolved tannin on the finish. Very good at this point - this is my last bottle, but off this, I'd say this is good for another decade at least.

The same as the June bottle -- outstanding piece of work by Produttori guys. Tar and green grass on nose, with dark chewy fruit on the palate, with a lot of life in it. Moderate tannins. Definitely is at the "should be drunk" stage while it is still delicious.

Another outstanding delicious bottle from Produttori. I would say this vintage has peaked and should be drunk, but as long as it is in the next year or so, should be a delightful result.

Another stunning bottle of this Barbaresco. What a value. Nose has light tar and a grassy note. Palate is dark cherry, lively acidity, a bit of menthol, and great deep nebbiolo fruit. Good bit of tannin still hitting at the end to give a zing. No sign of peaking.

This bottle is in a great place - the dark fruit is starting to show some age and getting along well with the clean earth and spice. The finish becomes a tannin show. Great with the Sugo di carne.

Even better than last year. The nose is more serious than before -- dark nebbiolo fruit wafting. The palate had dark cherry, earth, significant acidity, a bit of menthol, and a real hit of tannins that meld wonderfully with the rest.

This is still a rugged and youthful wine. The nose is packed with red and black fruit, some rubber and graphite. Similarly, the palate is explosive and finishes with a wallop of tannin. Hold for another 5 to 7 years minimum. Excellent potential but oh so backward. Hopefully it smooths out with more time - no guarantee. (90+?)

So sad-WAY over the hill. Not flawed, just pretty much faded and gone. Other recent tasting notes vary, so there is likely a lot of bottle variation (though this bottle was stored properly). If you have any of these I would drink them as soon as possible; Maybe you'll be luckier than I and it will still be within the drinking window. Buona fortuna!

Cork: perfect, I don't find corks on current release as tight as this one was. All visible staining was within 2-3mm of the cork-wine interface. The cork was firm and springy, a bonus from the crumbled brittle cork I found on another bottle from the same year and producer opened 2011.
Big tannins creep into this one, and it begs for fat! Animal fat or plant fat both would have been happy with this bottle.
This bottle was not a cocktail wine, in the sense that without the balance of food, it would have made the tongue cry for mercy from the tight ever building tannin presence. However, when a little fatty food came into the production, it softened its grip, and revealed itself again.
Aromatically, this bottle lived in the moment, and thought about maturity. If it were a person, I'd say it was 39 years old. It showed maturity, with a lively spirit.
Word salad profile of the bottle: garnet, beefy leather steeped in fresh raisins, acidic harmony, tannic strength, aromatic greeting, and a persistent finale.
shared equally, and consume over 4 hours.
Drink or hold

A surprising bump upward. Another year of sitting really has helped. Nose has light tar, and a definite grassy note. Palate had dark cherry, lively acidity, a bit of menthol, and the underlying darkness of top quality nebbiolo fruit. A winner.

Garnet red, slightly bricked. Good fruit, slightly raisinated. Reminiscent of a baby Amarone. No joke! Tannins are soft, moderate acidity and mouthfeel. Drink 'em if you got 'em!

Starting to show a bit of garnet, with ripe, slightly overripe cherry, menthol, and dusty earth. Tannin still present for sure, but smoothing. I don't think this will be better in 3-5 yrs, though it will certainly last that long.

Faintly unpleasant nose of stewed mushrooms/soy sauce. I don't think this just reflects age; Suspect this bottle, sadly, was cooked. Not undrinkable though-Went OK with pork chops.

This was very good and an awesome value. It's definitely improved over the years. This was the first Barbaresco or Barolo I bought and is the last of my 2003's. Lots of cherries with a rose petal nose.

Has definitely taken on more gravitas since two years ago. Has a medium nose of dark fruit and hints of tar. Palate has huge dark cherry notes with some extra sweetness that contrasts with the significant acid on the back half. Tannin definitely kick in the end and linger.

My last bottle! Alcoholic fruity nose, red cherries and raspberries on the palate with tannin and acid. I agree with previous reviewers that the wine is not completely integrated and harmonious but I still think it has all the elements of good Barbaresco. I would definitely recommend this as a nice example of wine from the region that has high value.

Double decanted and given 1h to breathe. Medium sediment. Pow - alcohol, dense raspberry in a medium nose. On the palate: an all out assault of bright sour, ripe red cherries - a whole bowl full of them - followed by cinnamon, and then by not so subtle tannin. A delicious wine from the Langhe, with plenty of tannic structure left to further evolve in the bottle.

Kirsebær, krydder, jord og et svalt streif av lær på nese. God og moden i munn, slank tekstur med en fin og lang finish. Fortsatt merkbare tanniner. Ga litt mindre på duft etter en drøy time i karaffel.

Its been five years since I opened one of these. The youthful exuberance is gone. It has settled into a more classic nebbiolo profile. It is still tannic but with two hours or so in the decanter it is very approachable. The nose and palate have notes of the ripeness of the hot vintage. Good acidic grip makes it food friendly. The flaw is in the fact that it is somewhat too mettalic.

Decanted 2 hours. Medium-light color with a slightly amber edge. Bright, complex nose with high-toned notes of tart cherry, dried flowers, cinnamon and forest floor. Firm, tart and lively on the palate with cranberry, tart cherry and fresh plum skin flavors. The tannins are still firm and the acidity is quite bright. Tart, juicy finish suggests this is just starting to come out of its shell. 2015 to 2020.

I let this breathe up for five hours, but tracked it along the way. Burgundy color leathering to brownish. Showing some age. Floral aromas seemed to tighten over time. Austere, acidic entry. All structure with no discernable fruit. A finely tannic, drying finish. I know this is youngish, but I'm not sure how it gets better.

That's why I believe in bottles then before in wine. Everybody's saying this is a 90 plus wine but mine had a turbid brownish colour stuff. A very timid Nebbiolo nose, nice anyway. Better in the mouth, fresh and acid. Just fine matching a homemade vegetable rissoto.

Popped and poured at restaurant. Dark, so hard to see color. It has definitely opened and fleshed out a bit. Floral cherry and slight tar. Obviously ripe, and coming a tad unfocused as it warmed. Still with some firm tannins to settle out and some strong acids to carry it. Ought to last 5-8 more years, I think.

Ruby / garnet color. Nose on this wine really shines with red fruit, pine chips and mild soap. Works well and is very fresh. Fruit delivers on the attack, with zippy acid and significant tannins on the finish. Maturing, but will develop significantly with more bottle age. Check back in five years. I think it will be a winner. (91+)

PnP, shared with beachrooster over 2 hours. Very complete nose at this stage, but the palate still has upside potential. I never would have guessed 03 in a blind, as this has plenty of freshness and cool, vibrant acids. The tannins began to swell and sharpen by the one hour mark; the fruit, too, gained some weight and complexity with each new glass. Very pretty now, but I would recommend waiting a few more years. recommended, 14,0% abv, drink thru 2019

Quite firm and quite young but its elegance is emerging and the structure here is terrific — bold, almost aggressive, yet refined tannins; acidity that threads its way between supple and tart. The aromas express tar, spice, and roses particularly well. All this from a hot vintage, not bad at all!

Nice complex nebbiolo fruit with primary cherry still apparent and some secondary scents/flavors developing. Tannic and rustic at opening but much softer and very enjoyable at 3 hours. The future is bright for this one, as all of the elements are in place, but it still needs time to drop some of the tannin, improve the palate, and gain some elegance. Wait 2-5 years.

A real disappointment after the 2005 tasted at an Italian wine dinner just a couple of months ago. Did they decant that 2005 for half a day or more? Or was the 2005 vintage just that much more approachable early on or just that much better? The 2003 is still WAY too tannic in Aug. 09 even after 2 hours decanting, and still not particularly pleasant on day 2. Firm tannins mask any other significant flavors day 1 and they turn chalky, but still overpowering on day 2 (after pumping out air and storing in fridge overnight). Overall, it truly was undrinkable day 1 (far too young?), and only "good" on day 2 ("Good" is like 2 1/2 stars out of 5 in my system). It's not fun to spend almost $30 for a wine you enjoy no better than a favorite $8-12 bottle. I only hope the 2004 in the cellar turns out better, especially if we give it several more years before opening.

Slowly opening up. The once completely transparent raspberry red color is now a nuance or two darker. No real bricking at the edges. Clean nose that is much more open now compared to on release. The palate still very tannic but not so much that it subdues to fruit. Tertiary flavours starting to peak through the raspberry fruit - leather, tar. I would call this early drinking window and suggest 2 more years of bottle age for maximum drinking pleasure. I don't think I will ever reach Galloni's RP91, but it is not that far off. 87+

Two hour decant. Lovely bright, clear ruby with some bricking around the rim. The nose is somewhat volatile, though not unpleasant. Dark cherry, crushed strawberry along with the characteristic rose petal and tar aromas. Quite full bodied, those aromas of rose and tar are more prominent on the palate than any other flavours. High acidity and persistent, mildly chalky tannins. It's a slightly out of balance with the alcohol showing a bit, characteristics of the vintage, though it's still a very nice wine that really needs it's regional food. *** 1/2

Still kind of tannic. Relatively clear bright purple-red color. Still vibrant, only slight orange tint. Nice floral nose with some spice. Sharp on the tongue, even after 2 hours of decanting. Sour cherry, herbs, flowers. Despite the light color, potent taste and concentrated flavors. Long finish. I'm figuring this needs a couple more years.

This is very interesting--super concentrated, intense mth, but flavors are a hidden, and t’s are still a bit raw and astringent. Needs decanting. W/ roast beef ribs in red sauce. Needs 3+ yrs

This is a fantastic wine, particularly for its price point. The nose was berries and particularly strawberry. The taste was almost close to the 2000 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis--which is rated 97 points by Wine Spectator--but not as complex as the Sandrome Barolo. But, the taste was almost Barolo-esque. Sandrome Barolo is close to almost a $120 a bottle, whereas this one I bought for $40 a bottle. So, for 1/3rd the price, you are getting a 92 point wine. Phenomenal. This was also my first Barbaresco and I wasn't sure how it would turn out. But, as one of the reviewers of this wine said on cellartracker --- this is a very approachable wine. I am going to buy a case of this soon :-).
Updated on 2/13/2009:
I managed to buy 15 more bottles of this in Hillsboro, OR from Renaissance Wine and Spirits. Renaissance charged me $28.50 + no tax (+ a 20% discount because I got a case). Compare this to Massachusetts where the price per bottle is $39.99 + tax, thanks to the $$&*@&^@^!^! liquor lobby. And, now MA Attorney General Martha Coakley is trying to help the lobby too ... anyways.

Finally seems to be coming around and lets you take a little peek through the wall of tannins. Still very tight though but notes of raspberry and roses coming through. Tastewise it's still a rough experience. Quite tannic and quite acidic as well. Concentration is starting to show but this wine will never be about power and fruit despite the vintage but rather elegance and style. I would give it 2-3 more years before trying it again.

Ruby-garnet in color, with a tight nose of cherry, asphalt, and slight floral scents. Medium bodied, but possesses plenty of intense red fruit and fine tannin. Finishes with a strong push of acid and tannin. I'm interested to see this in 3-5 years, and again in 10.

Wow, Terrific Black Cherry on the nose with lots more Cherry and Strawberry on the palate. Extremely approachable with two hours air picking up a little weight and puckering tannin after that. Color: Dark red, but when held up to the light, this wine showed the most brilliant ruby color I've ever seen in a wine. Beautiful. Aromas: Perhaps my allergies were acting up, but I found the wine closed and not show much on the nose. Some red fruits is the best I can describe. Flavors: Sour cherries and some strawberry up front meet up with some big tannins in the middle and on to the finish. Seems this wine should lay down at least a few more years. Plenty of play in this one, and seems pretty tight right now.
Plenty of potential in this. Too young to drink at the moment without a few hours of decanting.

Integrated classic nebbiolo aroma. Flavors and palate lag behind the aroma at this point in its life although very good after 4 hours in the decanter. Maturing quickly but some tannin still evident. color of brick - but light and very transparent. Initial nose upon opening had some funk to it, like genoa salami - but that blew off quickly. Clear tar, leather on the nose after 2 hrs. Initial palate has cherry, strawberry, followed by a monster wave of the base tannins, that fadely slowly into a exquisite finish. Already beautifully complex but will likely become better over the next 5-10 yrs.

very difficult to rate as this wine was so primary and closed, I had it as a quartino at Osteria Mozza and with an hour of air it began to to show some classic piemonte charateristics such as cherries and flowers. I expected it to be a little more giving from such a ripe vintage.

INDEED: an almost unbeatable Nebbiolo-based wine as far as QPR is concerned - and since www.Ronaldi.de now has it on sale for EUR 14,95 you better pick up another case if you can - and as long as it lasts... Now is not the time, though, to fully enjoy this, but in 1-2 years things will start to brighten up. And I guess Antonio Galloni is right that it will last at least until 2018.

Brilliant clear ruby to a dull pink at rim. Pleasant nose of violets, licorice and black cherry. Good punch. Light to medium body with a huge tannic wave that begins after a second and covers the wine through the finish. Lovely red fruit and rubber peak out though --- showing glowing possibilities. But is a tight, tannic wine right now. I have a feeling this is going to be a real gem, but it needs 10 years at minimum. I won’t touch another bottle until 2015. When it comes around, I think I will be sitting on a heroic QPR as the goods are there and this was incredibly well priced. I could see low to mid 90’s potential, though today this is (88++).

My Notes: 1st , yes I know I drank this wine a little young. Thinking it might have shown a little better, but I was dieing to try a Barbaresco. Wonderful nose! Cherries and a jammy strawberry, buried in asphalt. This was all wrapped in a floral backdrop of violets and hint of oak. The ruby red color with moderate depth, kind of fooled me. Expected a lighter wine, but this had massive tannins which totally coated the mouth. Tannic yes, young yes. It would be best in a couple years, guessing around 2009 from other comments I have read. Tannins even young were integrated fairly well with the cherry fruit. Mid palate presented licorice moving to a slightly chalky. bitter tea and then peppery finish. For $26, have to admit was looking for a little more depth in this one. Much better with food than alone. Big steaks or pasta.

Very nice bottle of wine. Fruit seemed to be a little muted initially, but opened up a bit with time in the glass. The tannins noted by other reviewers are present, but don't seem to detract much from the overall experience. Not an overpowering wine, so would be fine to drink on its own. Must get more.

Leathery, with cherries, blue fruit and a touch of alcoholic heat. Dusty, mouth drying tannins and a long finish. Probably drunk way too early, but already fabulous with a robust food pairing. Loads of upside. 90-93.

SFwine double blind night (Kev's pad, San Francisco): Wasn't sure if the musty note that emerged from this with time in the glass was TCA or not, but the rest of my tasting group was nearly unanimous that this was lightly corked. Damn!

Opened and poured a glass about an hour before grilling filets. Looked thin in the glass and was bit tannic to start. By the time we served with the meal the wine had opened and some nice fruit was eveident. Paired well with the filets. I finished the last glass about an hour after dinner and the wine was drinking even better. I would decant for a couple of hours prior to serving or just pour and taste as the wine evolves. This wine shoud age well for a few more years. Great QPR for $32. Will purchase more.

Was expecting a little more oomph from this bottle...If you're looking for a big barbaresco with much depth of flavor, this isn't your bottle... More medium bodied, became better with food but probably would pass on future purchases...

Poured at a retailer tasting. Bright ruby color. Notes of cherry, raspberry, spice and flower petals. The tannins are slightly chewy, with red currant and rose petal flavors on the palate. Showing well, with room for improvement. 88-90.

Very light almost orange red color. The nose shows signs of the warm year, ripe fruit, red berries not that intense though and too simple. Some tanins only a little acidity and short finish. Sweet licorice in the taste. Boring.

Impressive if a little backward. Medium ruby color and weight. A touch riper and more tannic than the excellent 01, with a nose of roses and cherry fruit. 01 is more elegant but I think there's a bit more here in the long run. Both extremely fine for the money.

This week I bought some of these bottles based on Antonio's review. At around 17 euro's I thought this could be a very nice QPR.
and it is!! In fact.. it is a fabulous QPR!!
after two hours in the decanter this wine shows a generous amount of fresh fruit, soem plum, firm tannins and a nice depth and length. The wine will become more balanced in about 2 years.
very bright light red color and some nice violets on the nose and a bit of glue (becomes lesser with air)
This is a 90+ wine.

Dusty red cherry fruit on the nose. In the mouth, dried flowers / rose, red cherry. Solid underlying acidity. Rather light weight. Has a bit of a hard edge. Nice.

Just checking in on my first of these-popped, poured a glass, then decanted. Drank about two thirds of the bottle over a few hours, then poured the rest back in bottle and drank the next day. This was showing young and a bit raw, of course, but quite promising. Slightly more powerful than other vintages I've tried, I was initially a bit concerned about it being out of balance-strong up front and with ripe tannic balance but empty in the mid-palate. That resolved after time and this ultimately showed itself to be a beautifully balanced, potent version of the normale, with all the classic characteristics there in a warmer, riper frame. Great stuff and a no-brainer for good value Barby.

Double decanted and given 1h to breathe. Medium sediment. Pow - alcohol, dense raspberry in a medium nose. On the palate: an all out assault of bright sour, ripe red cherries - a whole bowl full of them - followed by cinnamon, and then by not so subtle tannin. A delicious wine from the Langhe, with plenty of tannic structure left to further evolve in the bottle.

Decanted 3 hours and tasted over an additional 3 hours. Lightly colored with a wide clear rim. High toned nose of spiced cranberries, potpourri and some earthy brambles. Bright and tight red berry and tart cherry flavors with a bit of sweetness just starting to poke through. Nice focus and structure, it is developing as I expected. 90 points for tonight. Very enjoyable. Pleasantly floral on the nose. Palate brings nice elements of cherry, rasberry, tar and anise. Still pretty tannic and dry on the backed. Could easily go another 5 years in the cellar.

And, now MA Attorney General Martha Coakley is trying to help the lobby too ... anyways.

Tastewise it's still a rough experience. Quite tannic and quite acidic as well. Concentration is starting to show but this wine will never be about power and fruit despite the vintage but rather elegance and style.
I would give it 2-3 more years before trying it again.

Flavors: Sour cherries and some strawberry up front meet up with some big tannins in the middle and on to the finish.
Seems this wine should lay down at least a few more years. Plenty of play in this one, and seems pretty tight right now.

Initial palate has cherry, strawberry, followed by a monster wave of the base tannins, that fadely slowly into a exquisite finish. Already beautifully complex but will likely become better over the next 5-10 yrs.

Now is not the time, though, to fully enjoy this, but in 1-2 years things will start to brighten up. And I guess Antonio Galloni is right that it will last at least until 2018.

Alcohol: 14.0%
Acidity: tart
Price: $25.99
Aromas – Moderate to Intense; cherry, strawberry jam, very floral aroma violets, tar and oak
Color – Moderate color depth. Ruby
Tannin – Powerful Tannins
Flavor – Full bodied. Dry; Moderate flavors. cherry, licorice, bitter tea, chalky, peppery
Finish – Medium to Long
My Notes: 1st , yes I know I drank this wine a little young.
