Sentimental bottle w/the person who gifted it to me!
30+ minute decant. Reddish brown color. Rustic nose of plums, dirt, and stewed cherries. Wine was definitely over the hill, but had enough there to make it fun!

From a magnum- Northern Rhone nose - some meat, black pepper, and the essence of mature Syrah. For the first hour there is mature red fruit - tart, resolved, hints of dark chocolate. Earth, meat, pepper hare here. The wine has softened and resolved, wisps of acidity keep it lively and enjoyable over a meal. Begins to fade a bit as the night wears on. No fireworks, but a nice, mature Hermitage to celebrate a vintage 2000 bday.

Almost nine years after I last tasted this, and tried first straight from the bottle. Colour and clarity still holding up well subtle bricking around the edges of a lighting ruby. Red fruit - raspberries, red currants - and some butterscotch on the expressive nose. Some acidity to the fore on the palate, but otherwise smoked meat, spice, ground black pepper combine in the medium-bodied, smooth palate and into a medium length and soft finish. This should be drunk now/over the next couple of years.

Very beautiful, very mellow. Mostly secondary, but still some hints of dark fruit. Well balanced still but mellow. It wasn't a great pairing with braised beef short ribs, but it was delightful on its own. I opened about 3 hours before dinner and it needed it. Tasted along the way I was worried it was just over the hill, but it pulled into a nice place.

Time to drink up -- mostly secondary characters showing now: sandalwood, forest floor and a bit of barnyard. Refined, fully integrated, more silken than velvet but stood up to rack of lamb well.

Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow" #033: Northern Rhône red (By JWS): In the bouquet green herbs, menthol, spices and leather. On the palate dark berries, tobacco, vanilla, dark berries and cherries, good acidity and slightly edgy tannin. Beautiful wine, but not living up to the expectations.

Drank side by side with the 1997. I enjoyed this one. While the '97 was mostly in the secondary characteristics, this had black fruits coming through as well. A nice precision to the structure. Enjoyable.

4th Saturday group uptown tasting (R&D's): Blind. Faded crimson color showing notes of dried leaves/forest detritus and mixed berry fruit. Cherry and currant notes emerge with a bit more air. Shows just a hint of brettanomyces too, bordering on the dried hay bale variety, but it does not overwhelm the wine in this case. Red fruit and spice on the palate, with a lengthy finish. I guessed Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
This had been quickly double decanted off its sediment about an hour before this flight was poured. I don't see any improvement from this point, so I'd say drink now to 2023 assuming this bottle is representative.

Brickish red in the glass with a lovely sour fruit nose that has a hint of sweetness in it. This is a well balanced wine matching red fruits and spicey notes with a beautiful acidic backbone. Meant to be a poor vintage but I have to say I really enjoyed this bottle of wine.

Served with pan fried venison medallions with mashed potato and a reduced red wine sauce. The wine worked well, although it didn't so much compliment the cooking so much as slip alongside without disturbing anything.... A lovely spicy / herby nose with red fruits moves on to a touch of blackcurrant and strawberry on the palate. The palate is rich, silky and long. Lovely!

opened this when the bottles we had decanted ahead for the Super Bowl were drained, this performed very well right out of the bottle, very nice with med plus body, fruit driven but with nice acid for balance and some iron (clearly syrah but almost had a gevrey iron element, minerals etc)... really good and would be with food or alone, bottle drained quickly

Mature appearance - garnet with some brick red at the edges. Decanted for three hours and it blossomed into a complex aroma of tertiary notes around a subtle core of strawberry fruit. Delicious - drink now because it's ready and has nowhere further to go.

This was a very good find from the Wine Society cellars in Montreuil. We opened this and a 2007 Chateau Talbot to have with our main course of duck with green olives. Both opened 4 hours before drinking and decanted the Paul Jaboulet (obvious sediment). A pale tawny edge reflects its age. The nose is not strong but fully developed and slightly spicy. The palate was one of 'mellowed aggression' - good body and intensity - cedar, white pepper, black fruits. This needed the time to develop and is now round and harmonious. Don't leave it much longer.

Medium deep brick red. Still some primary fruit on nose, strawberries and other warm summer fruit reminiscent of a medium aged Burgundy. Quite heady and with more spice and leather on palate. Noticeable acid and tannin on finish. Good with duck breast, crushed potatoes with olives and minted peas. 3+/5

Dark garnet. Quite a lot of sediment so it needed decanting. Had it with lunch and it was closed with some earthy/animal notes coming out. At dinner it was ready for business with dark spicey fruit, damp earth, olive, some animal notes. Medium bodied with low to medium acidity and somewhat more developed vs the nose. Medium to long finish. Nice but past its peak.

drank over three nights, good and proper Jaboulet HLC, and much better than most of the 1990's bottles i have had, not a long lifer, seemed plenty rounded, med plus body, enough acid but not for much more aging, plenty of dark fruit and a healthy dollop of mushrooms, drank over three nights and it held up, i would drink of next few years

Quick Note; Very balanced and still showing good fruit that is towards the darker side, think black cherry and blueberry. Secondaries of roasted meat and a touch of earthiness. Started to become muted after a few hours in the decanter (I had left some in the bottle corked and it was confirmation of this), I think its in a good spot right now.

Deep crimson core, paler at the rim. Wonderful nose, black cherries, ripe damsons, a floral note, african violets?. On the palate, good acidity, not at all sharp or tart but very fresh and lifted. Soft well integrated tannis. Pronounced black fruit notes, black cherries, plums, blackberries. A nice wave of black olive, spice and mushroom. Decent length too. A lovely bottle, probably at its best now but will hopefully plateau for a year or two.

Medium red, almost pinot-like in colour, but nose definitely syrah, tarry, lots of ripe red/black fruit, slightly meaty-bloody. Soft, ripe, quite long finish. At 12 years old I'd say it's maturing quite quickly, so not a great Hermitage LC perhaps, but very nice now. Just lacking a bit of body.

taste:Full bodied with nice tannins and medium acidity. Well balanced with nice depth and classy tones of roasted meats, spices, black fruits, dark red cherries and some floral tones.
overall: Like the bottle in september, this was from a magnum. While it had youth to it, it was drinking just fine. It can age a while, but one wouldn't go wrong with taking a peek right now.
taste: Medium/full bodied with good tannins that show off the youth of the wine. Very nice feel with medium acidity and tones of dark red cherries, bacon fat, violets, and black pepper.
overall: This was served from magnum. It held pretty consistent and was decanted for about an hour beforehand. This showed pretty well, and though it is on the young side it is drinking very well.

Decanted for about 2 hours. Mature ruby colored with some bricking around the edges. Medium, even legs. Nose is initially subtle red fruit, predominantly raspberry and red currant, followed by sweet notes of butterscotch. None of the expected spicy, pepperiness, but that comes on the palate, which is overwhelmingly freshly-ground black pepper, some dustiness, slightly tannic, but a firm grip. Very Northern Rhone, medium to full bodied, smooth textured and a medium finish.

Drank with venison and juniper berry gravy, and also with '99 vintage of same wine. The 2000 was very balanced and enjoyable but a little more closed at this stage than the '99. Will defer drinking my other 2000s for a couple of years at least.

I acquired two bottles after having had this wine at a nice Swedish restaurant. Sadly the bottle I opened yesterday bore no resemblance to the lovely specimen I was fortunate to enjoy a mere week ago. I was too disappointed to take notes, but the experience can be summed up as follows: It was as if everything – the fruit, acidity and tannins – had been turned down several notches leaving the wine flat and dull. I had heard stories of considerable bottle variation, and should probably have been content with fond memories. Let’s just hope that my last bottle is one of the good ones.

Smoky, peppery nose with a lighter than expected palate but with nice (again unexpected) strawberry, peppercorn and lightly smoky flavors. There's a good back-bone of acid. If not for the pepper, you might think it was a burgundy.

From Magnum. Color was starting to fade some which gave the impression of an older wine. Red cherry and plum aromas with a great deal of earth, leather, and some vegetal notes. Medium bodied on the palate with decent fruit, but not the power that I was expecting. A bit too much acidity. Soft tannin and a somewhat short finish. This bottle was clearly fading.

Basically the same note from a couple of months ago with one additional observation. I forgot to bring this up from the cellar until right before we sat down to eat so we had this at cellar temperature. I would not have guessed but this seems to retain its intensity and flavor profile at cellar temperature. Nose is very intense. But it does show a bit more tannin at cellar temperature so I guess there is a tradeoff. Also we picked up some hints of strawberry this time.
"Outstanding. Decanted for about 3.5 hours. Seemed to fade a little bit from the intensity it had right upon opening, but didn't fade out, still good 5 hours later.
Dark ruby with some bricking. Nose is very appealing but soft, dark fruit, smoke, and a little spice. Palate has a lot going on: fruity, smoky, some tar, with olive tastes taking over the long pleasant finish."

Orange rim showing clear signs of evolution. Nose discreet but charming, with raw meat, violets and evolution, anise. The mouth is very pretty, with a superb balance of freshness, I'm sure dealing with a Cote Rotie. Good acidity, a wine of finesse, delicate and charming, but with a finale that would more complex. Maturing deep ruby color. Impressive nose: herbs, beef blood, bacon fat and ripe fruit with a touch of amontillado sherry notes. I am enjoying this. bought this at auction. Pop and pour a glass - left the rest in the bottle for an hour and a half. Nice plum, smoke and olive nose. dark ruby red color - long legs in the glass. Taste - slight plum with a smoke/bacon fat flavor - olive on finish (but just barely). A nice la chapelle, but not a blockbuster. no real change over three hours. Popped and poured. Bad idea, let's decant this puppy. Much better. Offers bright red cherry, some smoke, toasty oak, and herbs. A touch meaty too. Actually showed quite primary. The palate had a medium body, finishing with spice, fig and plums. Not too complex right now, but glad I tried one to see where these things are going. I'm not convinced that it will turn into anything spectacular though, but we'll see.

Hermitage La Chapelle, 10 vintages incl 1990. TWS Tasting (Merchant Taylors' Hall, London): Seems firmer and fuller on the more than the 2001, a little denser. Dusty on the nose. Still some find tannins though nicely balanced with some acidity. Fruit starting to become quite sweet and attractive albeit quite light. Certainly drinkable with pleasure now. A slightly cheesey note appearing on the nose. A lighter style but charming none-the-less. *** M. Jaboulet thinks this will surprise in a few years along the lines of the 91.

If this wasn't La Chapelle 2000 I would think a likeable Syrah of about £10-15 . In essence a good negociant Crozes . A good nose of spiced peppers, fruit and earth. Sweet on the palate but not long . A light of former years .

From magnum: the color is holding fine and the nose leans to earth/ forest floor, leather/beef and some black fruit. At Abercrombie’s Baltimore: brick/garnet to pink; earthy sweet, black-cherry fruit – some cough medicine and rose water on nose. Consumed over dinner at Canlis. This difinitely had the la Chapelle footprint. Maybe it wasn't a "big" as a la Chapelle of this age would normally be, but all the components were there. Sure this isn't a mind bending effort but I don't think it's as bad as folks are making it out to be.

La Chapelle verticale (1978-2002) (Bad Ragaz, Switzerland): The wine is clearly shut down, despite the claims of the representative from Jaboulet to the contrary. The nose is rather weird but the palate is more reminiscent of a La Chapelle with a pure, focused expression of the fruit, slightly sweet/jammy but not too much. The finish is not particularly impressive at this stage, although the wine develops quite nicely with time. This is still quite underwhelming for a La Chapelle.

Lovely!

Nez peu expressif sur le bacon fumé, l'olive, la violette et le fruit rouge
En bouche c'est fuité et fumé, matière plutôt moyenne et ça tombe rapidement, plutôt court pour un vin de cette race.

At dinner it was ready for business with dark spicey fruit, damp earth, olive, some animal notes. Medium bodied with low to medium acidity and somewhat more developed vs the nose. Medium to long finish. Nice but past its peak.

Yeasty and plummy on the nose. Very washy and dulled fruits. Not much body and no depth. Opened slighty and gained some weight, but not much here at all even after some hours. Dull, fleshy, grape soda fruits. Totally disappointing.

At Abercrombie’s Baltimore: brick/garnet to pink; earthy sweet, black-cherry fruit – some cough medicine and rose water on nose. Medium bodied, but good depth – sweet / tart cherry plum fruit – very high acid – out of balance – finishes very, very short. Drinking OK, but in no way a great or good La Chapelle (15)

Winery: Ripe cherry, complex, dark fruit, light prunes, ripe forest berry and some hi-notes in there; plenty of a’s, perfumey, touch of truffle; well-bal t’s, a’s, long fin. “Light pepper, some strawberry notes too.

Aromatic, cherry, leather, toast, sandalwood incense, currant, mushroom and olive nose. Med-full bodied with good flavour replays, balanced acid and tannins; long, earthy finish.
...after 2+ hours open: blackberry, floral, pepper, black tea, tar and chocolate nose. Flavourful and well-balanced; long finish.
