  • Holy cow. This wine is absolutely singing. A big step up from the last bottle and in a perfect window this evening. Deep ruby color, it is loaded with dark berries, raw meat and wild herbs mixed together with a strong yet subtle personality. This is truly a Burgundian style of Cote Rotie and I love it. I may be underrating the bottle as its purity can easily complete with the big boys of the region. Old school and awesome. Bravo. The balance will allow it to live on for a while but I am going to drink these soon - it’s just in that good of a spot. Yeah baby. (95)

  • Little to add to previous note, other than the intensity was back with this bottle, which was just beautiful. This clearly has some life left in it, but I'm really not sure how long. Unless your cellaring conditions are perfect, I'd suggest drinking by end of 2025.

Medium garnet. Pronounced aromas of bramble, dried cherry, prune, leather, bacon, pepper, black olive tapenade, smoke, barnyard. Fully developed. Medium + acidity, medium + fine tannins, medium alcohol, medium + body, medium + flavours with a long finish.

  • Ok, so I got the drinking window wrong 3 1/2 years after my last bottles, this is still going strong. It might have lost a little intensity, but the balance of fruit, acidity and tannins is all there. Still has life ahead of it too. I have three more bottles. How long to hold? Outstanding, mature and classic côte-rôtie

  • Très joli vin qui nécessite une bonne aération.
Animal à l'ouverture, il s'est considérablement amélioré après 3 heures de carafe.

  • Nice wine. Still a bit shy on the aromatics with a little olive coming through. Palate is well crafted, put some tannin meeting time to integrate with some crunchy acidity. Mid weight. Despite a splash decant and being followed over 3hrs was never as expressive as I was hoping. Best to hold a bit longer.

  • 8/12, excellent cork. Decanted 1/2 hr.
Medium/deep ruby core, pale rub rim - quite youthful appearance still. Nose shows strawberry fruit, florals, white pepper. some darker fruit with time in glass. Medium bodied, elegant, harmonious, straberries, florals, spice, soft tannins, fresh acidity, decent length finish. Drinking really well.

This wine has developed nicely, great balance between primary, secondary and tertiary flavours, complex and layered, great acidity, tannins still quite grippy but no big deal. Can drink now, but has potential for further development.

  • I agree with much that has been said in the last coupla' years here. Overall, this is a beautiful wine, but the tension has loosened quite a bit, though kept it fresh. The beautiful red, but mostly dark berries are still fresh and stomped up with venison jerky, and savory-sweet spices like black pepper, cinnamon, coriander, star anise, cumin all a bit dusty and smokey. The texture is silk, with super fine tannins. Obvi. duck, roasted game birds, would be dope, but be careful about too sharp of acid on a dish to overpower what is becoming subtler on the structure, though the nose is not electric, but showing well yet. Most folks would prefer drinking up in the next three years or so.

  • This mature Rene Rostaing classique Cote Roti (nowadays called Ampodium) still runs well, with dark & red fruit, smoke, salami and old leather books. Smooth and meaty CR from the neighbour of Guigal.’

  • Quite good; classic, traditional. Shows no sign of age, with aromas that center on the pepper/spice side in its early moments, moving toward more subtle pepper, red/black fruits, soil and forest notes. The palate is just lovely, with a med/med+body, silky lines, and artful curves. The finish is med+, but I believe that had this been aerated in decanter, it would have been firmly in the LONG camp. Aristocratic, and humble at the same time. A joy. Drink now thru 2026, but not certain it'll be improving from here. recommended

  • 7/12, good cork, decanted 1/2 hr.
Youthful appearance - ruby core, pale ruby rim. Moderately intense gently perfumed nose showing spicy red fruit, florals, white pepper, some flashes of darker berry fruit with time in glass. Medium bodied, this is harmonious with soft tannins, spicy red fruit, white pepper, touch of earth, attractive vibrant acidity and a good length red fruited finish. Excellent.

  • Fabulous wine at a peak of (mid) maturity). Superb expression of the appellation - totally expressive of Cote Rotie - leathery, earthy, touch of menthol, animal raspberry. Old-school Cote Roite that focuses on the fruit, and the proportion of the wine feels totally traditional. Superb.

  • Drinking well now. Earthy, peppery, with spice and leather showing. A bit of greenness but not pronounced or distracting. Overall very good and in a good spot right now.

  • Leather nose, over decant time it developed delicate red fruit with earthy undertones. Quite elegant, light to medium bodied wine that is fully mature. A bit of oak with hints of pepper on the finish. Drink-up

  • Rene Rostaing Classic cuvee 2005 ! Still very fruity ! Its only 15 years old :-) the dominant note in the nose is black currant. With a collection of herbs. Top maturing in Renes cellar ! At the palate there's a long typical cote rotie finish. With a peppery note. Well integrated tannins light acidity

  • Similar to previous notes (reproduced below). I don’t believe this will improve further - it is already fully developed and i feel it may already be losing some concentration. Of course you can see what happens in the longer term but I’d drink up in next year or so.

Medium garnet. Pronounced aromas of bramble, dried cherry, prune, leather, bacon, pepper, black olive tapenade, smoke, barnyard. Fully developed. Medium + acidity, medium + fine tannins, medium alcohol, medium + body, medium + flavours with a long finish.

  • Medium body. The nose is quite kaleidoscopic, dried meats, some exotic Middle Eastern spice and dark berry fruit, really sensual, the palate is more straightforward with earthy fruit put, this is lovely and clear,y drinking well but will keep longer and could get better

  • Medium red color. Aromas of red fruits, leather, bacon fat and wood spices. Medium-bodied well-balanced fruit in the mouth with very good depth and length. Very suave and juicy on the palate. Delicious with the duck confit at Fond Restaurant. In middle of prime drinking window.

  • Medium garnet. Pronounced aromas of bramble, dried cherry, prune, leather, bacon, pepper, black olive tapenade, smoke, barnyard. Fully developed. Medium + acidity, medium + fine tannins, medium alcohol, medium + body, medium + flavours with a long finish. This bottle had more fruit on the palate, which really opened up in the glass. Mature Côte-Rôtie, not suitable for further ageing. Drink by end of 2020.

  • Medium garnet. Pronounced aromas of bramble, prune, leather, game, pepper, smoke, barnyard. Fully developed. Medium + acidity, medium + fine tannins, medium alcohol, medium + flavours with a finish a little thin. Palate doesn’t quite match the nose. Mature Côte-rôtie, not suitable for further ageing, time to drink up I’d suggest.

  • Still pretty purple lovely dark and red fruits and opened up well after an hour decanted.

Not the most complex but probably will benefit from more time.

  • Chicago Wine Flock...Bill Having Fun with Flights (Wilmette, IL): Tasted double blind. Came across as very northern Rhone with black cherry and black pepper. Moderate weight, length and complexity, but at a very pleasant and enjoyable place for the near-term.

  • bit closed at the moment, all seemed a bit muddled and muffled, 2 bottles both showing the same, needs 5 more years IMHO, 2006 drinking better at the moment, but this has upside

  • 6/12. Medium garnet core, pale garnet rim. Quietly complex nose with mainly red-toned fruit, some blackberry, pepper, touches of blood and bacon. Medium bodied, mainly red fruited, quite peppery, smoke, some florals, fresh acidity, good length finish with a touch of unresolved firm tannin still showing on the tail end. Very good indeed, drinking well, no hurry.

  • A perfect example of Cote Rotie in early - mid maturity. Beautifully resolved, very much tertiary, with plenty of fires floor, leather and animal notes. ripe red fruits and a solid structure give this wine definition, suppleness and grace. Probably at its peak of development, but will continue to evolve for another decade. (92-93 points)

  • Fully mature now with good depth and smooth, polished tannins. Ground pepper and cooked plum flavours, plus toasted oak notes such as mint, tobacco and chocolate. Stylewise a bit too oak-infused for today's preferences (typical headache wine;) but the quality is definitely there. Don't wait.

  • Gorgeous garnet color. Typical CR nose of dark berry fruit, bacon and olive branches. Smooth and integrated with lovely flavor throughout. Excellent finish. This is classic Cote Rotie in every sense - you can taste the grapes and earth. No dressing required. Drinking perfectly right now. (93)

  • It's been nearly 3 years since I've last taste this and it is in a really good place for me right now. It still needed about 3 hours of double decanting to open and then it was all softish, dark red fruit juxtaposed to a sauvage core with sanguine undertones and the barest hints of stewed fruit nuances. The tannins on the long finish are still quite firm but not obtrusive.

  • Northern Rhone night at Chez Simo (Chicago, IL): This was certainly quite nice, and I loved the nose, with its red fruit and olive notes. The palate showed just a touch of vanilla on it, but perhaps (and hopefully), that will disappear with time. Quite silky, perhaps a little bit too much so, this is a surprisingly easy-going bottle, especially at this young age. Tannins are a touch coarse (no real surprise there). I'd definitely be interested in revisiting this wine maybe a few years down the road.

  • Daniel's birthday party at Rules in London (London): Drinking great right now, this has been sandpapered down by time, into a silky complex, light footed brew that perhaps was just a little overmatched by full British steak dinner, but just lovely to drink. Remarkably elegant and light to medium bodied, no tannins, should probably not save for too many years more.

  • Beautiful brick color. Peppery with a nice aftertaste that isn't full of tannins. Probably the right time to open after 11 years. Tastes more complex the longer it's open.

  • Weekly tasting group #196; Northern Rhône vs Southern Rhône (@ RW): In the bouquet red berries, minerals and leather. On the palate red and dark berries, minerals, metal, firm acidity. Elegant wine with a good length. Wait a few years more. 89 - 90

  • Weekly tasting group #165; Rhône (@ RW): In the bouquet that typical Northern Rhone minerality, metal, blood and bacon as well as some rustic flavors. Same on the palate with juicy red and dark berries, good acidity and mild tannin. Young maturity stage now. Will probably evolve for the better the next year or two. 89 - 90

  • Deep purple color. Slight funkiness, faint and pleasant. Still tannic and started very tight. Needed 2 hours to really starting drinking well, but once it did it was very good. Dark berries, tobacco, spice and pepper. Good now with air, but I would wait a year or two still for it to really shine.

  • Coravined. Deep ruby/garnet core, pale garnet rim. Nose at first reticent but fairly quickly opens to show spicy red fruit, touch of blackberry, florals, savoury bacon, touch of herb. Quite complex and developed. Medium/full bodied on the palate, now much softer on the mid-palate, very spicy, mainly red fruit, vibrant acids with savoury bacon coming through on the good length finish. There is a touch of firmness still on the tail end but this has come on well and is now drinking nicely.

  • Gorgeous and a point, ready now with a gentle nature but also with considerable acid and tannic structure that gives inner strength. This is outstanding and archetypal Cote Rotie that is not profound and many might rate as "merely" good but for me, this wine convinces in a quiet and refined way. Delicious and should drink at this peak for another 5 years, although why wait?

  • Last bottle of six. Not that impressed with the vintage compared to other growers in CR. Rostaing normally delovers burgundy silkiness and finesse but this has always been a bit rough without having the tension. Nose is OK but palate suffers. After two days it was slightly oxidised.

  • To a certain extent a "blend" of 2008 and 2009 which were served alongside with riper fruit and more generosity than the first and more subtlety, restraint than the latter. Unfortunately it is less complex and long than both. Drinking nicely now, fresh and round. 88-90

  • Medium ruby. A whiff of brett which does not detract from its overall fragrance. Elegant medium weight, olive flavors, good acidity, more back end tannin than it seems at first taste. Really very good and almost there, but it will probably be better in another 2 to 3 years.

  • Very good wine, aging but not old. Good red fruit flavors, some strawberry even, with black pepper and spice. Smooth, drinkable, but with still a fair amount of tannin left. I would keep this for another year or so before drinking more.
Elegant, but with a few rough edges still to soften.

  • Decanted and sampled over 3 hours. Needs some 45 min to get its act together, but not nearly as vibrant as the 2007. I imagined the 2005 will need more time but it doesn't really match it, even after 3 hours.
Promising nose, deep cherry notes and some plum; more muted palate. Works well with a beef stew after an hour, but not as enjoyable on its own.
It might benefit from a few more years in the cellar. Not too impressed. I will stick with the 2007s.
[this was the last bottle on the shelf at Adnams; capsule was missing]

  • Basically same as last time. Strangely not that open on the nose but still not that much tension. Not up to normal 2005 standard. Mishit by Rostaing?

  • Double decanted for about 3 hours. Tonight this has a fairly reserved nose of dark fruit, some tapenade and a floral component that I can't quite put my finger on. The palate was showing subtle dark fruit, tapenade, nori, leather and hints of iodine, all supported by a firm minerality at its core and a med length finish. This is very traditionally styled and on the softer, more feminine side of rustic and drinking nicely.

  • CT Texas V - North Dallas Forty and then some; 5/3/2013-5/5/2013 (McKinney, North Dallas, TX): Nice floral nose with black fruit, bacon fat, hints of red plum. On the palate, black cherry, hints of pepper, smoke and vanilla. Finishes a little short.

  • Not very deep nose and none of the tertiary aromas of game and meat. Medium bodied and not that long. Day two it was oxidized.

  • Medium rub core, medium pale garnet rim. Nose is initially reticent, but slowly opens to reveal medium intense aromas of blackberry, some smoke, vanilla and a classic Cote-Rotie floral top notes. On the palate this is medium bodied, with blackberries, notes of smoke, vanilla. The tannins are still a touch firm and even chewy but there is attractive lively acidity and then a medium/good length finish. This is still a touch tight and firm and I think it will benefit from another year or two in the cellar.

  • A quite forward, if a bit rustic, nose of leather, roast, smoke, and dark fruit. Intially firm and structured, this changed rapidly with air. Simultaneously the dark fruit receeded and the intial impresssion of a wine with an extended life in front of it was called into question. There is some left for a day two taste, so we will see. My view of the wine diminished with time open.

Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comment

  • The wine in a sweet spot and has lots of room to sit on it's plateau. The sweetness of the fruit is seducing, the finish is long, what's not to love?

  • When I see notes on a Côte-Rôtie being boring, I wonder if a consumer understands or appreciates what Côte-Rôtie syrah is, and represents.
That said, I don't think this merits the 92 & 93 score by WS and WA, but those were in 2007 and 2008.

    13% alcohol.
Côte-Rôtie has the acid and stuffing to generally age well. All old notes of high tannins now do not apply, they are integrated.

Color is a medium hazy purple.
Nose of blackcurrant, black tea, a bit of plum.
In the Mouth - lacking the intensity of acid/fruit - 2005 Côte-Rôtie isn't usually 'old'...but I would not cellar this for many more years, unless this bottle
perhaps was not cellared properly, which I wonder. In The mouth its simple; black fruit, dark cherry notes. Went well with lamb pasta, was better first night than 2nd.

  • I could say that this wine was well structured and elegant. What I really want to say is that it was boring with little/no sense of terroir. I can't say that it was over the hill but I can say that would not care to try another bottle. It was neither corked nor oxdized.

  • Still structured and young. Good but almost austere fruit. Lacks a bit of hedonistic appeal, at least at this stage.

  • Tasted 2003, 2004 and 2005 in parallel. The 2004 had the most typical northern Rhone nose with thyme, pepper, some ham and bacon and beginning animal tertiary aromas. The 2003 was surprisingly tight with some green paprika and nail varnish, the least satisfying nose of the three. The 2005 had the most downscale nose with restrained aromas of more primary fruit. On the palate the 2003 was the most full bodied but not necessarily the sweetest, and with the slightest green tinge which is surprising thinking of the warm weather in 2003. The 2004 had the best balance between
fruit and acidity and is the most Burgundian of the three. The 2005 clearly had most tannins and is more Bordeaux'ish in style and olfactory sensation. All in all I prefer the 2004 right now, but the 2005 might be the best wine in 3-4 years. None of the wines are shut down, but then again, Rostaings rarely do.

  • Delicious. Very smooth with soft tannins well integrated. Nice dark berry flavor, I guess 2005 was a very good year. I did not decant and it seemed ready to go as is.

  • Quite intense nose with a little bit of red fruit, but mainly oak and some spices (black pepper, I guess). The palate is quite on the sweet, fruity side and lighter than I expected, but with good equilibrium. It faded quite rapidly.
Overall it was a bit of a disappointment for my first bottle of Cote-Rotie.
Tasted blind - picked up randomly from a group of 5 northern Rhone.

2nd day: I realize that I enjoy this wine at 16 Celsius. As it warms up in the glass I find the sweet note (both on the nose and palate) too strong.

  • A pretty nose of barnyard, dark fruit a touch of iodine and some nori. The palate is subtle dark fruit, seaweed, iodine and deep earthy undertones with fairly firm, well integrated tannins. The finish is moderate and the wine is full bodied. Needed about an hour in the decanter. This is quite a nice cote rotie. Stored overnight in a 375ml screw top bottle, much better on day 2. The darkfruit opened and the tannins moderated quite abit. Excellent.
