  • I had 2 bottles this week. Lovely nose. Precise but powerful fruit on the palate. Excellent length. Though not inexpensive, if this was from France would cost twice as much.

  • Beautifully aged with intensive fruit, herbacious secondary note, and well-absorbed tannin. After an hour this bottle is just fabulous. Simple and straightfoward yet powerful enough, and no sign of degradation at all. Wish I had this more.

  • Took about 45 minutes to open. Good acidity and definitely some tannin. Rustic, earthy nose, but not funky. Would buy again.

  • Just not yet ready.
Closed in the mouth, even after three hours of air. Sour cherries, which resonates well with food but not for drinking by itself. This is my second bottle - a magnum today - of this vintage in this mould.
Worst case this turns old before it gets better. Base case, this takes at least a further three years - and likely five - before it really balances out. The quality of the fruit supports this.

  • After a one hour decant, I found this wine to be very approachable with a beautiful bouquet in the glass, a solid core of sour cherry fruit, a classic yet modern version of Brunello due to the fruit concentration. I’m used to Il Poggione being built in a more rustic style so this bottle surprised me tonight. Maybe vintage dependent? Nevertheless, I really enjoyed it.

  • Awesome, in a great spot. Needed no decant.

  • Decanted and left for four hours before first sip. Floral nose with leather and nuts. Lovely palate of ripe, dark cherries, assertive tannins but nothing unpleasant. Good acidity to be had which keeps everything together. Great wine at a good price point, should keep for years to come.

  • Good and correct- but does not have the edge that characterizes top Brunellos. Drink now + 5

  • Drinking very well now after 1-2 hour decant, especially with food. There is some fine sediment. Cherry and tobacco dominate. Tannins are still noticeable without food, but this was an excellent accompaniment to pasta with lamb ragu. This can probably continue to develop over the next few years.

  • Some brick-colour changes at rim. On nose, dried red fruit, black winter truffle, orange rind, sweet mint, furnace. Some tertiary flavours on palate, but with lively tannin. Drink now.

2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Balsamic, red cherry, leather, tobacco.
Definitely moving towards more tertiary notes.
A bit high in alcohol: I can taste the 14.5% from this warm vintage.
It pushes it a bit too far: slightly out of balance

  • Bouquet of ripe cherries, molasses, Italian herb, some funk. Intense bouquet, rich, quite some tannins, but still quite enjoyable. Substantially improved compared to 2-3 years ago. Good with food, potentially too young without.

  • I have little experience with Italian wine: I have to limit myself, as I am not a professional taster and only have one liver. This wine has a medium-deep color with noticeable browning. The bouquet and taste are quite restrained with some cedar and cassis, rather pronounced acidity (seems to be typical for the Sangiovese)and a medium-long finish wiith dusty tannins. It seems at its best as an accompaniment to the meal. This is by no means a bad wine but clearly not my cup of tea.
I don’t know if this wine has something to gain from aging, but i doubt it.

  • Not the best vintage maybe and not quite off ready to drink. At least 10 years plus. Tannins and acidity overpowering the rest. Be careful patient

  • Quite light color with fine hints of amber at the rim Beautiful nose dominated by sour cherries, raspberries, warm earth, brick tiles and iron. Medium bodied attack, on the elegant side for a brunello, but it expands on the mid palate: Cherry with a fine core bitterness, classic tannins, a fine touch of licorice, and then good, sweet cherry fruit in a long aftertaste. This is just good, but not a great brunello.

  • Tasted blind. Medium ruby red with slight orange tint, pink rim. Dark cherry, strawberry, tobacco, spices, smoke and earth. Medium bodied, medium-high acidity, and medium alcohol. Tannin was so overwhelming that dried out the palate. This bottle needed a few years for the tannins to soften.

I recently tasted a 2015 Brunello di Montalcino from another winery, and had a similar experience with high naked tannin. That 2015 BdM wine suddenly fell into sleeping phase: Fruits had almost vanished, and exposing the naked tannin. It was like a beach in low tides with water retreated and exposing all the rocks and creatures. I wonder if this was a wide spread 2015 BdM phenomenon.

  • No contemporaneous notes. Opened and served about an hour later, no decant, alongside the 2015 Volpaia Chianti Classsico Riserva with shrimp scampi and pasta. This was the much better wine. In the early stage of its drinking window. Nice aromatics, complex, balanced with grip in the finish, and an engaging flavor profile that I recalled the next day. Excellent. If I were serving this at home, I would give it at least a short decant.

  • Brownish color, but wow, such an expressive nose. Typical Brunello aromas, the fruits are very present, not much tertiary, tannins have mellowed a bit but still grippy. Starting to drink well not would wait another 2-3 years but not much more. Great wine.

  • On the nose, some red licorice, dark plums, sweet spice, some vanilla, some low level VA. Ripe core of silky fruit surrounded by smooth, high tannin, and medium acid. Solid as always.

  • Wow. A really superb bottle of Brunello, and hard to believe it's only at the beginning of its drinking window. Beautiful clear color in the glass. An ethereal bouquet of roses and cherries, cedar and leather. Lots of sweet red fruit on the palate. Very smooth tannins and a nice hit of acidity toward the end. Only going to get better but it's well worth trying now.

  • Farven meget flot, mørk rødbrun, granat. Meget tæt, men man kan se bunden. Meget klar.

  • Quite evolved color verging on mahogany. Sweet cherries on the nose, complemented by tobacco, some licorice, coffee, nuts and dry wood. Full bodied, smooth attack on the palate, lots of sweet black cherries on the first part of the palate. Then a fine acidity kicks in resulting in a mid palate and finish reminiscent of raspberry jam. Fine tannins add to the picture of a complete wine that has reached a quite high level of maturity. The aftertaste is more on the acid, raspberry side than on the sweet tobacco/sweet cherry I would expect from a top Brunello from the 15 vintage. Still, a perfect wine for pizza. Drink now or keep for some more years.

  • This is a wow!
Was wondering if this Brunello was too early to open. Early, but not too early. Massive fruit. Dried cherries. Slightly angry but very lovely tannins. The acidity is well balanced with the fruit and body. Glad this was my first bottle of many.

  • Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow": Vino Nobili di Montepulciano (@ The factory by JdB): Garnet red with high viscosity. In the bouquet red and dark berries, cherries, leather, herbs and spices, coffee and oak. On the palate ripe dark berries, sweet spices, green herbs, chocolate, good acidity and round tannin with a good bite. A pleasant touch of sweetness and a hint of celery as well. 92 - 93

  • Dark berries and potpourri. Richness of intensity. Was beautiful in hours 2-4 after opening, and for us faded a bit after 4 hours. Paired beautifully with fresh pasta with a beef and juniper ragout. Wish we had more!

  • Strong balsamic nose. Almost too strong. Coravin’d ~2 glasses to decanter and let them rest about 2-1/2 hrs.

  • Takes a bit of time to open up, but it’s showing exceptional balance; tannins delicate already but I think this wine has a long long life ahead of it. Good, ripe fruit, complex nose of leather, sous bois, black fruit. 2015 Brunellos from what I’ve seen really do live up to the hype. Will leave remaining bottles of this for a while yet, I think - but bottle I opened a very good taste of what’s to come…

  • This was excellent. Tasted along side the '16 Barone Ricasoli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. I'd say this was a few points above that.

A well built Brunello of red and dark red fruits. This has a solid structure and firmness. Excellent length and complexity. With some years in the bottle, this will really soften and round out.

A big fan of the '15 Brunello's. None I have tried have been disappointing and this is no exception.

    Superb.

  • Stunning electric nose, sharp, vibrant, cinders - fireworks. Palate is very balanced and tannins are held in check by sharp fruit. Concentrated palate. Really impressed with this. It has been a while since I have had this wine (2004 I think was the last vintage I had), and I don't remember this characteristic.

  • Consumed at social event, brief notes only. ~2h slow-ox. Dried tomatoes and fresh herbs of basil with a beautiful floral overlay. On balance a more red type of berry fruit. Very high, searing acidity on the palate with an otherwise mostly fruit-forward flavor profile.

  • Having last had a 2004 from this producer, I suspected that this would be too young, however wanted to test all the same. Pleased to say this was young, yet drank superbly with dinner! Powerful nose of cherry, and red fruits with a cedar hint, delicious texture and fine grained tannins. This will certainly last and keep improving with age. I did enjoy tasting it at this age and will probably dip in again in another few years of so. Relative Bargain too.

  • Powerful smell of black cherry, sweet tobacco, a touch of leather and some mulchy undergrowth. Medium to full bodied, high tannins, slightly grainy, high acid, young but fully ready. Tangy, fresh and balanced. Excellent, will last years yet.

  • Beautiful Brunello, we opened and poured , would have benefited from a longer decant. Silky tannins supported great fruit , a powerful yet refined wine

  • Pop and poured. This changes a lot during the evening, a sign of complexity. First beautifull complex nose with black and sour cherries, licorice, tobacco, mint and herbs. It's young, concetrated and full bodied.
Later there's the most beautifull candied cherries on the nose, the palate mellows with sweet fruit and a long finish with a serious dose of tannins, but plenty of fruit to balance. This is bigger than most Brunellos, but it is just delicious to drink now.

  • Really really like this one. Great nose and perfect taste. My go-to Brunello.

1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Pretty, floral aromatics with deep red cherry, wet earth, and a hint of minty green herbs.
On the plate, it’s medium weight with moderate plus acidity and grippy, chalky tannin.
This is drinking well but will develop into a wonderful wine when the tannin relents. Try again at 3-5 years.

  • Tasted over three days. (I recently tasted the 2011. The similarities in terroir are striking, although this showed marginally fuller and rounder.)

Highly effusive bouquet of fresh and stewed fruit, violets, herbs, menthol, mincemeat, spice box, pipe tobacco, used espresso grounds, worn saddle leather (with wafting hints of well lathered horses), deciduous forest sous-bois (a rarity with Brunello di Montalcino) and considerable black earth and mineral tones. Oak, while present, is relatively balanced, by BdM standards at least, and the alcohol, while less than overpowering, makes its presence known.

The wine tastes like it smells and held form over the three days. So many BdMs, especially over the last ten years or so, feature heavy extraction, at least one small oak forest, often two or three, and jolting alcohol. They often show Port-like qualities. Extraction here is commendable. It is a touch extracted, yet fruit expressions do not drown out terroir. The pipe tobacco, menthol, and sous-bois notes, in particular, create a fascinating tug and pull interplay, and enhance the wine's overall tension. Oak and alcohol, decidedly noticeable, do not drown out terroir. Acid and tannin provide impressive structure.

On the downside, the tomato-leaf and tongue-tingling acids, really go to work, particularly at the mid palate. For this reason, I cannot imagine pairing this with heavily tomato sauced fare. My preference would be beef, but herb-roasted boar might be even better. Non-spicy, smoked charcuterie would also work well. Avoid dry cheeses (especially Parmesan), unless well aged and served at room temperature. Put differently, this wine begs for fatty meats and buttery cheeses. It is made to cut through something, and fat seems to be the thing.

The stewed fruit elements here raised my brow, creating questions as to the wine's long-term cellaring potential, say, beyond 2028 or so. The alcohol too, requires taming fare, notably fat.

Though earthy, if this wine were to be compared to a barbershop quartet, 1st and 2nd tenor would stand out. Baritone would hold its own, but bass would underwhelm.

Overall, though leaning modern, an Old School Brunello, which does not lack for nuance and brings considerable brawn to the table. Not a good stand alone sipper, on account of the overtly tongue-singeing acid, and to a lesser extent, stewiness. 93-94.

  • Cherry and red fruits coming through, but obviously more tannic compared to its BdM royalty siblings from Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova.

Yes, this was my bottle and number 5 in the Italian Job shoot-out at Farm to Plate - I did what I could to prep the wine with a 2 hour double decant at home prior to meeting my sifu @[1|2138129|DavidQ] @[1|1258030|SKT] @[1|9482449|Mika Tyson Teau] @[1|24439245|Joe Yee Wong] buddies, and it was a fun afternoon!

  • Pretty deep garnet/ruby color. Explosive notes of black cherries, candied violets, graphite, underwood, there is also some dried fruits, cedar wood and cigar tobacco. It‘s full-bodied and dense, with excellent persistence, but also an extra level of finesse in this big vintage. It has pretty high acidity and medium-high tannin that is nicely covered by an extra level of fruit. Long finish with excellent complexity. This is probably the best vintage of this wine I have tasted until now. It‘s not the bruiser that it can sometimes be, but has more than enough depth to be substantial, but also an extra level of finesse.

  • Cherry soaked leather, star anise, balsamic notes. Lovely herbaceous nose. Sweet, sharp and savoury this is a really good effort. Still powerful and boozy (maybe a little too much) but much more feminine than previous vintages. Should last for another 5-10 years but worth starting to work through the case now.

  • 2015 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino was meaty, rustic and powerful. The developing Brunello was clear and medium garnet in colour without any sediments. It was aerated in-bottles for two hours. Notes of farmyard, smoked meat and liqourice were followed by fresh dark cherries, blackberry, thyme and rose petals.

The mouthfeel was dry and full-bodied. The high levels of acidity and structured tannin were quite unforgiving in its youth. There were flavours of bacon fat, dark chocolate, bramble berry and rosemary herbs in a rather long finish. The alcohol level was at 14.5%. While it is possible to appreciate the layered aromatics and meatiness, it is quite austere to taste at the moment. Five additional years of ageing may be necessary for the elements to come together.

According to the winery website, the vines were cultivated at an altitude between 150 and 450 metres above the seal level. The must was fermented with the cap submerged on indigenous yeasts at controlled temperatures from 25 to 28 degree Celsius. The wine was matured in French oak barrels, and then in bottle prior to the release. I was expecting more specific information, like the orientation of the slopes, soil composition, the maceration time and proportion of new oak barrels. I guess not all wineries disclose the technical details.

  • Only fully enjoyable after 3-4 days open in a bottle, as still very primary. Interesting bouquet of spices, herbs, fruit compote, underbrush. Nice palate but still drying on the finish, given young unyielding tannin, not giving a way a lot at this stage. Requires another 3-5 years in bottle or a very long decant. Score between 90-94 at the moment with clear potential to get to 95+ with more development.

5 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Drank after 1 hour in a carafe. Medium ruby red in color. The nose has cranberries and a hint of mushroom, but otherwise fairly austere. The palate has cherries, cranberries, a bit of mineral, and some alcohol heat. The acid is a tad strong for the flavors with some mouth-drying tannins. Medium length. The wine needs several years in the cellar. Alcohol 14.5%. After 2 hours in carafe, the wine is opening and much improved. At 2.5 hours it hadn’t improved more than after 2, and maintained at that level to 3 hours (at which point I’d finished the half bottle I extracted with a Coravin).

I finished the 2nd half of that bottle tonight, May 30, 2021 (no Coravin, just pulled the cork and poured into a flask). The first half, I used a Bordeaux glass, this time a wide-mouthed Burgundy glass. Not much difference in glass or outcome. It took about 2.5 hours to fully open and was at its best after that. Otherwise the same comments apply. Maybe after another 3-5 years in the cellar, I’ll increase the rating, but not yet.

  • Just a short note: this is an incredible Brunello-value, although not amongst the very best. Deep garnet, enticing nose of dark cherries, warm wood and dry earth as well as a mentholated note. Medium to full bodied, sweet fruit all the way to the aftertaste. Finish is fresh and with fine grained tannins. Medium to long aftertaste, somewhat warm but not alcoholic. Beautiful to drink now, but will keep for a decade and improve for at least five more years. My last note was with the wine to accompany hearty food, and it fared less well with that food. This time it was drunk on its own, just for the hell of it. OK, so the note didn't get that short... (what they call manic descriptive?)

  • Drank alongside the 2004, 2010, and 2012, and certainly the baby of the bunch. Tightly tannic and very chewy, needs a lot of aeration to really do it justice. Bags of sweet ripe fruit when it does open up. Very enjoyable but I'd give it another few years, and perhaps as many as 15+ more.

  • Drunk with a risotto with chanterelles and bacon. Deep ruby color with garnet rim. Very nice nose dominated by sweet, black cherries, some smoke, and a hint of minerals (slate/oil). Medium to full bodied, smooth tannins, sweet fruit, fine grained tannins and fine acidity. Cherry dominated mouth and aftertaste, but also with that mineral streak. Medium to long aftertaste. Nice wine, but perhaps a bit uninspiring. Maybe it will fare better in a year or two?

  • Dinner in the American club in Singapore with some INSEAD friends. Great wine list at reasonable prices. Short decant. Medium purple Color. Beautiful nose with a lot of Mediterranean herbs, smelling the pines and the olives, smoke, red cherry, and this amazing meatiness. Med+ acidity, Med body, Med alcohol, Med+ flavor intensity, Med tannins, Med+ tannins. Beautiful structure, feeling in Tuscany, very meaty, red cherries melting in the mouth, loving the herbs and salinity, silky tannins. This is young and will only get better but already a magnificent showing.

  • Aroma is barnyard, Roasted meat, sour cherries, prominent leather.
The texture is soft, with fine tannins which seemed to dissolved on the tongue, resulting in a very pleasant & refreshing mid-palate.
A delicious crisp medium-bodied wine, balanced without rough edge. Fruit forward & yet elegant.
Light round red apple fruity finish.

  • dark red on colour. Cherry, red fruits on the nose. Blackberry, tobacco, nicely integrated oak
Very good balanced acidity and fruit, long. Elegant, fruity and beautiful Brunello.
Still tannic and young, probably peak in 5-ish years

  • Tasted alongside the 2006 of the same wine. Decanted for 10 hours. This pours notably light in the glass, almost reminds me more of what I expect in a Rosso di Montalcino. Indeed the nose is elegant, airy and red fruited featuring rose petal, red cherry, strawberry, a light touch of VA, rosemary oil, just a faint hint of reduction funk, and some cigar wrapper. The palate is youthfully structured with firm medium plus tannin and medium acid. The finish lingers impressively, medium plus in length, replaying red fruit. This could easily have me confused with a nebbiolo in a blind tasting. Certainly surprising that Il Poggione has pulled off such a light and elegant wine in such a ripe vintage, but well done! I could easily see this picking up one or two points to my palate as this ages.

  • I have to agree with many of the rave reviews here - this is in great shape right now and has enormous potential, perhaps 5 years from now. I’ve recently drunk the 2010 and 2004, both of which are very good, and this is even better. If you have a case, it’s definitely worth trying one now to get a sense of it ... but hold on to the rest.

  • Super riche et costaud.
Beaucoup de matière, des cerises, des prunes
et de l`anis avec un peu de poivre et
des herbes. Les tannins sont charnus et
    la finale bien longue.
Superbe vin en devenir, presqu`un RQP.
    La prochaine dans 5 ans.

  • My first 4.5 stars this year!

Exquisite with delicious tannins and love how the wine improves after half hour then an hour and 1.5 hours. Gorgeous forward red fruit notes and a beautiful earth undertone.

Wonderful Christmas week bottle with our Scallop .. Duck .. Foie Gras and Steak with Oxtail lunch. Happy Christmas 2020!!

  • Maybe I was clouded by some of the rave reviews this received, but it took some time for me to really get into this wine. Certainly it is too young, but this was so unrevealing for several days I wondered if it might be a slightly flawed bottle, although it doesn’t show any particular taint. With air the nose starts to show some beguiling cherry and floral notes. There is some definite oak varnish as well. The palate is red fruited and quite firm. The quality is clear but I would definitely wait a few years to open this.

  • Double blind. The first whiff of nose put me immediately into Montalcino, as this has this somewhat sharp oaky smell I am only getting from young Brunello. You get the same oak on the attack together with fairly rich and ripe fruit, followed by medium tannins. Obviously very young, hence guessed quickly 2015 BdM. Did not even attempt to guess the producer but this was kind of middle of the road in style, has neither the modern creaminess of say a Pacenti nor is it really classic in style. So might have said Argiano, but Poggione fits this description of course as well. Not necessarily my most preferred style, or something to load up by cases (I think I bought two cases though, oh well...).
Having tried my first 2015 BdM, and still remembering vividly the noise about the "classic" 2013 BdM vintage, am getting a feeling that BdM is doing an even better job than BDX in hyping the latest vintage as the best ever etc - 2015 seems to be very good but its not 2010 nor 2006 in my eyes.

  • Tasted blind. When I smelled the nose I was immediately thinking Priorat or CdP. Lots of ripe red fruit, stewed fruit, some alcoholic heat as well. On the palate it became clear that we are in Italy though. Lighter body with drying tannins. I really struggled with how drying the finish of this wine was, led me to a Barbaresco guess. I dont know how this ages, will the tannins soften before the fruit dies out? Will the slightly stewed fruit age in grace or become oxidative? No idea. Interested to hear comments from tasters who have more experience with this kind of Brunello. 88-93

  • Oprichtingsjaar 1890 Hectares wijnstokken 127,00 Jaarproductie 600 000 flessen
    beschrijving

  • Decanted for a few hours - needed the time as it was young and tight. Nice bouquet - vibrant, lively BdM palate with fresh cherries, mineral notes with a nice acidic backbone. Tannins present, but fine-grained. Oak still prevalent at this point, but till definitely be better (1 to 2 points?) in 3 - 5 years, should also keep well for 10+.

First bottle of the vaunted 2015 BdM vintage - looking forward to the rest.

  • Sweet dark fruit, tobacco. Medium to full bodied in the mouth, lots of juicy fruit. Fine but substantial and grippy tannins. Plenty of acid and very fresh and lively. Still very young but there’s a lot to look forward to.

  • Just tried the '15 Stella di Campalto Rosso, and the nose here is even better. Lush and heady, with ripe red & black fruit.

The palate is a little more diffuse than the Stella, and doesn't have that tannic bite on the finish. But another wine drinking very well on release.

  • 2015 Brunello di Montalcino, new releases (Montalcino centro): Benvenuto Brunello 2020, Montalcino

Every year I taste these on release, and every year these are closed off. This is the nature of this producer's Brunello - it needs time. In my 20+ years with this wine, depending on the vintage, it can be from 8-13 years after release that this is revealing its true message. To say a lot about it before then seems a bit futile, but here goes: Initial aromas are modern/creamy oak, ripe red berries, cream, red currant. Lovely mouthfeel - before the searing acids and brutal, but finely grained tannins take hold, that is. I really like the medium body, the balance, and the understated nature of it all. I think this will blossom beautifully. Drink 2027-2045. highly recommended

  • Tasted at Benvenuto Brunello NYC. I have often been critical of this wine in just about every vintage I have tasted going back to 2004. It is a very modern, oaky and downright brutish wine most of the time...to be fair in this vintage I found it a bit less so than usual. It is a little lighter in color and more balanced overall, especially when compared to the wines they poured at last year's Benvenuto Brunello tasting. After some discussion at the pouring table with several of the attendees and the winery Rep, I finally understand the extent of what they do. In addition to massive amounts of new French oak in barriques, they do an extended month long maceration with the skins and then do the malolactic fermentation with some of the skins as well while in a second set of new barrels. This massive extraction of color, flavor and tannin along with the oak is what drove a certain pro reviewer to love this wine but I have always found it profoundly over-done and out of balance. This vintage it is possible to enjoy the wine with the right rich fatty food, but ideally it needs a couple decades or more to better integrate and soften to a level I would find enjoyable. Others will disagree with me I am sure and that is why the world of wine is so interesting. In the end it is up to your personal preferences... Given this style the wine is not flawed or poorly made, ergo I didn't want to be too harsh on the score. If you are going to drink this I suggest waiting at least until its 10th birthday.

  • In the bouquet a bit rustic with red berries. On the palate mild and round. Juicy cherries, good acidity and length and round tannin. 90+ for now.
