Dark red (almost black), 90 minutes airtime in bottle, earthy black currant/blackberry nose, dense black fruit on palate, hint of chocolate, touch of oak, very smooth long finish. Our last bottle sad to say.

Final Wine Tasting Dinner of 2021: Green capsicum, blackcurrant, black olive, with excellent French oak handling gives this wine a distinct cool-climate feel. The nose is open for business. In the palate, this is a mixture of ripe Napa fruit and some herbaceous elements, so there is a combination of leanness and richness to the palate that is complex and inviting. Certainly mature, but no hurry.

A 3 liter Pulled from dads cellar for Father’s Day and left resting upright for three days.
The cork was quite dry and took some effort to remove. I ended up drilling out the cork with a bit and drill…. Perhaps a lesson can be created. I digress.
The wine was trip,e decanted to remove cork residue. Baking spice and soft fruit was very apparent and appealing. Still showing a nice red hue rather than brick in tone. Over four hours it held up well. Obviously, a wine to drink up, the large format does offer some safety margin for those slow to the cellar.

my last bottle, time has been good to this. slight bricking at the rim. Slight funk when first opened, then blew off over a few minutes. Quite aromatic with blackberry, black cherry, currant, spice, vanilla, earth. Still lots of fruit with black berry, black cherry, spice, currant, earth, chocolate. Medium bodied with a long smooth finish.

Tons of multiple types of cherries and dark chocolate. Adds mint and camphorous spice on top of the cherry bomb as it opens. Agree that it's still a bit one dimensional even after a couple hours. Acid is prevalent.

Tasted side by side with the 2004, and remarkably similar. The 1999 had slightly more depth and smoothness, but the family resemblance was striking. A classic California Cabernet with palate length, balanced flavors and nice complexity. In a good place now but will last in the cellar for many years.

Not as good as the showing 3 years ago, but different. More mature, but on the downslope. The nose is still stunning. Weight is medium, flavor is more pruney now, and it's still monolithic. Tannins are resolved. Acidity still there so good with food. Enjoyable but drink up if you have these.

My wife Fran has a better palate than I -much better at blind tastings where I know what I like but unless its blatantly obvious what we are drinking I'm inept after 25 years with Fran in stark contrast. All that said she asked me" which Bordeaux is this? Can't tell if its right or left bank?" Sorry its my only bottle but this really was a surprise. Particularly coming after a relatively underwhelming showing by one of our napa favorites -pahlmeyer - where the 2001 was undistinguished the Pride was a beaut. Wouldn't wait to drink tho

Decanted in Reidel Black tie decanter for short amount of time. Then legs as long as Rockettes. Paired perfectly with the excellent veal chop Marsala we cooked. First sip was explosive, with tastes of fruit and infinite depth. For a wine with such age, To have so much fruit was quite impressive. With the mix of wild mushrooms in our dinner, the wine began to reflect a perfect balance of earth, rich berries and dark chocolate. Seemed like a good time to open, but probably would be great a year from now. Now onto the Bordeaux we have been decanting for 3 hours...

Men's Best Bottle, BB: Tasted blind among some outstanding wines, this was the best wine of the best flight. When revealed as Pride - not even reserve- we were all shocked... I'm guessing this is just a very good wine in a great place right now. Blind notes -glass - young. purple. Nose- cassis. cab. fig, dark fruit. nice! Mouth - young. big. Complex berry fruit, tobacco, integrated fine tannins. LONG finish.

The cork broke apart, so I am not sure how this effected the wine; that being said, this wine held together for 3 days; it had turned very "bordeauxish"; most of the fruit was gone but still lingered and secondary notes were well in place; earth and a little bandaid nose. Very good; not what I expected from a classic Napa Cab. Enjoyed thoroughly.

I decanted but it really didn't need the air and it may have proven detrimental near the end when it seems to show up a bit of VA.It started out great with a smokey spicey nose and layered palate. When I smelled it upon opening I should have just left it in the btl. This wine is pretty fully reallized I think. Not sure about the provenance of this blt as it was replacement blt from the winery that I'm not sure came directly from thier caves. It had a little extra cork soak and the fill was down about 1/2" lower on the neck. No regrets though. Very enjoyable all night till the last glass which seemed to show some VA vitaminy/ band aid flavors. I'd plan to drink them within the next few yrs if you have any.

Really a very welcome surprise - enjoyed last night with a group of friends as the second cab / cab blend wine with an entree of grilled elk tenderloin and wow was it good. I have had a lot of Pride cabs, both straight cabernet and the reserve but nothing close to this old and this was utterly outstanding. A good QPR wine at the Benchmark Wines price point and I highly recommend this wine. Very dark, full bodied, elegant and smooth yet robust enough with a solid core of well balanced oak and controlled tannins, great mouth feel and a lovely lingering long aftertaste. Big aromatic nose of dark fruit, black pepper and spice with primary flavors vibrant and well balanced with controlled oak, cassis, black fruit, black pepper on the mid - late palate and a vegetal green pepper note in the mid-palate. This wine is in a really great drinking window right now but still has years of cellaring potential left, not sure it will improve much more at this point though.

1996-2009 Pride Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon vertical tasting (Monterrey, Mexico): The nose on this wine is very interesting. Redolent of freshly ground roasted coffee, black fruits (black currant?) and a spicy note of cinammon.Somewhat elegant and more restrained than the 1997. This was a pleasant surprise as for some reason I wasn't expecting this wine to show as well as it did. It won the Wine of the Flight sweepstakes with 5 votes (although not mine).

From magnum. What a pleasant surprise. This was not a highly regarded vintage by Robert Parker. Surely the product of a cooler season. This Cab, however, really delivered tonight. Very fruity core with resolved tannin and very full mid palate coverage. The wine is a true delight in the company of medium rare rib eye steaks.

Decanted @ 2pm and left in closed decanter for 5 hours. Yet I still preferred it further aerated with Vinturi. Ellen preferred it 5 months ago when I just double decanted it, and let it improve over the course of dinner. Good Intense mountain cab.

Double decanted briefly in am, quickly rebottled, because I feared it would lose something if left to breathe. However, at dinner it started as a 91-92, and over the hour grew to a 94. We had little trouble polishing it off. An exceptional mountain cab with intensive dark fruit flavors, and extended finish. Glad I have waited on most of my original case. Should only get better from here.

Opened and poured into the glass and allowed to sit for an hour or so. A very dark red, almost purple color in the glass with a robust bouquet of earth, wood and blue / black fruits, on the palate big, teeth-staining, fruit forward, vanilla notes, not a ton of complexity, but a long finish. What I would call a prototypical California Cabernet, it could age another two or three years, but I would drink them sooner rather than later.

Great color, nose and taste -- what a winner. This is why I love PRide -- overall very very good wine tonight. The nose was of roses and berries and the taste was viscous (think) with a great balance of dryness /minerals and ripe dark berries.

On the nose, a marriage between traditional Cab fruit and an old, discontinued men's cologne called Yatagan (herbaceous notes, woods and a hint of leather and cinnamon in the background). On the whole, a bit unique but very alluring. On the palate, medium heavy body and generally slides towards high notes as it finishes in a deceptively long way. Others have suggested this may be at peak or fading. I'm not so sure...it's got a character that is much more old school than new. I wouldn't be surprised to see this evolve in the manner of 1970/80's cabs. Unfortunately, my last bottle.

New Years' Eve (Pride, Pahlmeyer): Perfect bottle - hand carried back from a wonderful visit many years ago. Dark purple in the glass - and I swirl expecting a burst of ripe fruits - but to my surprise I discover a wonderfully balanced nose with hints of black fruit, some vegetal (green pepper) tones and just a hint of vanilla and tobacco. Makes its case as a potential ringer with a lithe bordeaux-like mouthfeel, but it reveals its place of origin with ripe plum and black cherry fruit. Very nice balance with green pepper, tobacco, hints of vanilla and an acidity that keeps the wine vibrant and very food friendly. Quite the pleasant surprise - and quickly consumed (and enjoyed) by the NYE crowd.

14.1% ABV. Dark garnet in the glass. Dark currant fruit on the nose and palate, but this wine was showing an off-putting green bell pepper quality. The next day the bell pepper seemed to have receded somewhat, but this never really met my expectations for a Pride Cab. Probably on the downward slope.

Decanted for 5hrs. Glorious, bordeaux-like nose of cassis, damp loam, tobacco leaf, cedar and a touch of leather. The dark, meaty fruit continues onto the palate, which shows slightly stern. The is some tannin and a notable bell pepper. A fresh, crisp slightly tannic finish, which has nice bite. Should drink well for the next 5-7 years.

Opened about 30-45 minutes before drinking. No signs of age whatsoever. Plum on the nose, but bright, red fruits on the palate. Medium body and a long finish. Hosted a blind tasting at our home. Jaime brought a 99 Pride that went up against a 05 Shelter 27-29 and 05 Honig just to name a few. Good on the nose but seemed to be missing something. Not a bad wine but might be past its peak. Would not hold any longer. Pride Mtn wines seem to be hit or miss on certain years. Might have to start dipping into my 02 Prides...Was going to finish the night with an H. Upmann #2 from a Dec/07 Box, but drank and ate too much and went to bed.....Ha

This 1999 Pride was a huge improvement over the 1998 (Oaky mess) and the 1997 (fruit bomb/lacking structure) vintages we have recently tasted. Everything is coming into focus nicely. Rich/dense dark cherry, a hint of cassis, cigar box, and a bit of menthol/eucalyptus. Tannins are initially firm, but do turn slightly chewy at the 2 hour mark. Based upon this bottle, the wine should easily go another 4 or 5 years. Perfect with grilled lamb chops. Glad I still have 3 btls in the cellar.

This was a very nice bottle. Served with roasted NY strip and the two went together well. Served to guest who were all red wine drinkers and received rave reviews. With its inky plum color and a nose of ripe black berries, what is there not to like about this wine? With pronounced acidity it packs a wallop of creme de cassis, dark fruits, oak and black olives, all wrapped in a velvety mouth feel. Perhaps a little too much heat on the slightly medium finish keeps it from being truly great. Still, plenty of life here and a very nice bottle. What a difference a year made! Last of these; on to 2000.

deep garnet. I am surprised that the nose screemed a 2 y.o. wine. Taste was also young, except at the end when it hinted it was older than one thought. Very good and amazingly young for a 1999.

I don't normally decant, but decided to give this a little more air before tasting. Enjoyed this more than the last bottle; it has a medium-bodied, soft mouth feel with dark berry and mocha flavors, and some bright raspberry thrown in there as well. A bit oaky on the finish, but should go well with grilled steak.

This is the best showing of this wine for me. Previous bottles had mostly been under whelming vis a vis its siblings the 1997, 1998, 2001, etc. This wine really showed Cabernet character and depth. The aromatics are beginning to develop some interesting nuances. Deep blackberries, a full palate and very fine tannin. This is what an aged cab should taste like.

Upon opening this showed grilled meats, coffee and a pronounced green bell pepper charactistic. Rather tannic and tight. Day two was a very different story. It unwound to reveal a superb nose of blackcurrant, chocolate, cigar ash and a pleasing hint of that bell pepper. Lots of sexy oak notes. Dense but not heavy. There was an excellent mouthfeel with flavors of dark fruit, roasted coffee and licorice. Tannins had faded leaving a nice grippy finish with just enough acid. I like the Bordeaux-like weighting and complexity. With the exception of a 2001 immediately after release, this is the best regular Pride Cab I have consumed.

Rich plums, chocolate, black olive and green pepper on a lush frame led to to believe initially that this was Merlot. This is a very pleasurable wine with its rich fruit, some graphite notes and chewy tannins. It was a fat, creamy style of wine that did not reveal darker cassis flavors I would expect. Perhaps this is why CB who brought the wine blind, labeled it as "medium bodied." In any case, I think it is ready to drink for its sheer pleasure.

Opaque, with a nose of plums, menthol and noticeable alcohol. On the palate this is highly acidic, with bright fruit but some heat as well. Given the press, I thought I would enjoy this more. Less voluptuous than the 2000, but not quite in the austere category either, because of it's weight. The tannins are well managed, but there is some definite heat on the finish. Not my favorite Pride.

The Wines of Robert Foley (Antonello Ristorante - Costa Mesa, CA): This wine is starting to show some of its age, although I'm not sure to its benefit. Dusty aromas of cedar, tobacco, and smoke. A bit monolithic on the palate, with narrowly focused dark fruit flavors. Nonetheless, a smooth wine.

Tasted on open, the Pride Cab benefited from an hour of decanting time, was drinking very well at hour two but I thought it approachable from about 15 minutes from open. Tannic and big, there is no subtlety or smoothness on this finish but it was still pretty darn good. Intermixed with the tannic shell is a balanced dark deep rich cheery core. Pretty straightforward here, and I suspect that more decanting time would help as would a few more years of aging time. Still, I enjoyed it.

@ Pangea with Pedro Piña (LG Air) & Rodolfo garcía (Farmacos Nacionales SA).
This is probably the best showing of this wine for me. The nose was more giving albeit not as hedonistic and ripe as other hotter vintage bottles of the Pride Cab. The wine was full bodied, fruity, having lost some of the slightly grainy tannins it has shown before and offering a juicy dash of acidity that was very welcome and enjoyable.

Other CT notes made it seem that decanting several hours would be helpful. I think it probably was... decanted three hours, the wine was dark, straightforward, a bit simple in a cabernet way, and very satisfying. Perhaps not great QPR at this point, but certainly an outstanding wine. Glad I have a few more.

Beautiful deep purple and a better nose than I remember for this vintage. Blackberries and a hint of licorice. Medium to full bodied with low acidity and a pleasant finish. It doesn't have the intensity of the 1997, 1998, 2001 & 2002, but is a well crafted wine.

An Aussie-American get together at El Gaucho (Monterrey, Mexico): Dark ruby and more evolved than I expected (given that it was a magnum). Slightly shy nose of black currant, blackberries and a hint of licorice. Medium to full bodied, lacking a bit of concentration in the mid palate. A pleasant Pride Cab that falls short when compared to the 1997, 1998, 2001, 2002 & 2003.

A somewhat chewy wine right now, from ample tannins that should smooth out in a couple of years. Certainly a Pride cab, but not quite the quality of other years. Good, just a little off. I would buy other years (or try the reserve).

Dark and angular to begin, this seemed a little backward and reticent. However, with aeration (overnight) this opened nicely and developed scents of blackberries, oak, cassis, minerals and chocolate. Full bodied in that typical Pride fashion with a respectably long finish. For me, this is ready as I prefer these young and ripe, though I would advise mildly extended aeration at this point. Much better showing than 2 years ago.

On day one I could have mistaken this for a Syrah - strong bacon fat and coffee aromas. Creamy in the mouth, with a strong caramel favor. The tannins have subsided significantly (as with many 99 Cali Cabs). By day two there is more fruit - blackcurrant liquor, a cherry note, along with earthy aromas. Wonderful balance on the palate, with a smooth texture and nice weight. Graceful finish with just enough acid. This wine will never be a blockbuster but has excellent balance that will reward 3-4 more years of cellaring.

This wine is beautiful, elegant and complex. It reminds me of a bordeaux style wine with roses and blackcherries with some vanilla on the nose. The taste is well stuctured and exhibits oodles of black cherries, casis and wild mushrooms. The finish is long on black cherries and casis.

Served with ribeye roast, Yorkshire pudding, steamed broccoli and horseradish mashed potatoes.
Mmm, this is absolutely lovely! The nose shows initial notes of cassis which quickly move to cranberry, dark chocolate and pencil shavings. Dark, brooding and perhaps a little lean on the palate, this is still a wonderfully pleasing, albeit firm, expression of Napa Cabernet. Perhaps I appreciate this more, because I am finding some of the younger Pride wines (the Merlot in particular) to be too oaky, too sweet and just a little too simple. Well, this has none of those issues, as it is nicely structured and shows a level of restraint with excellent mineral notes, some spicy/leafy notes and a hint of secondary complexity. For my pleasure, this is at a very enjoyable point albeit still on the young side.

My rating is based on how it's drinking today, not its potential future, for who knows? Dark fruits, just a slight undercurrent of oak. Hits the top of mouth nicely but falls off quickly ... tannic and attenuated on the finish. Will this open up as the tannin resolves? Unclear. Fine, but a bit disappointing for this Pride fan.

Less voluptuous than the 2000, but not quite in the austere category either, because of it's weight. The tannins are well managed, but there is some definite heat on the finish.

This is really coming along. Was even better on the second day. No hurry or worry about this falling apart.

fruit was a bit subdued. Very rasberry-ish. Needed more time or in the funky period?

Had with Dave Rintoul and Brendan Keast at Pangea.
Beautiful deep purple and a better nose than I remember for this vintage. Blackberries and a hint of licorice. Medium to full bodied with low acidity and a pleasant finish. It doesn't have the intensity of the 1997, 1998, 2001 & 2002, but is a well crafted wine.

Lovely color: deep and dark, but still quite tight. Cassis and nice oak notes, but nothing to take your breath away!

Tasted in a pride vertical w/ a '98 reserve and an '00 cab. A mistake, the regulars just pale in comparison to the reserves. Generally seemed weaker than the '00.

Decanted 9 hours before ,I doubt it is at peak yet. We all enjoyed it and I am glad I still have 5 more bottles.

Drinking better now than two years ago. The oak played a complimentary role here compared to other Prides I've had recently. Too bad it's my last one.

With the Saturday Group. Delicious, I mean really delicious. Nice oaky nose but not overpowering. Flavors of black cherry and currant. Elegant in the mouth - almost velvety. Still has tannin and will last . Try next bottle in 2008.

Drank it with Christmas dinner -- grilled filet roast. Delicious wine. Cathy loved it. Rich, strong finish. Not near its peak yet.
