Moderately aromatic of black cherries baked with rosemary, thyme and laurel. Medium-bodied, I guess this is losing some size with age, but the 2005 structure is definitely there with gripping tannins and bright acid. This is fully mature, but with plenty of life left. I can't wait to taste it at 20! Drink now-2025 93

Extraordinarily aromatic with roasting peanuts, baked black cherry cobbler, herbs de Provence, exotic spices and roasting meat. Full-bodied, this is still moderately tannic (of medium quality) with loads of black berry and cherry flavors, more herbs de Provence, and a hint of eucalyptus. The finish lingers. What an excellent example of CdP and more specifically of what I love so much about 2005 CdP. Fully mature, but should continue to deliver pleasure for at least another 10 years (if you like old CdP). Drink now-2032 93 df 9.4

Deep red with leather-toned brim. Nose is fully mature with notes of leather, underbrush and some dark, dried fruit. Mouthfeel is medium bodied plus, mature, with fine-grained tannins, decent acidity and notes of leather, underbrush and black olives.
Very classical Chateauneuf, fully mature, good but not great. No need to wait any longer for this.

Drinking very well. Carries some age but still good fruit with leather and earth. Medium body but had some nice chewiness to it. This went down very easy with duck leg confit and an olive tapenade.

PnP with dinner, perhaps decanting would have raised this a bit but really enjoyable nonetheless. Tart, dark berries with plum, tar, and a hint of pine tar.

Absolutely knock-out nose loaded with herbs de Provence, roasted black cherries, fresh cut flowers, black pepper and other spices. Rich and full bodied but with the telltail structure and freshness of 2005! Wish i had purchased many more 2005s and (almost) no 2007. Drink now- 2025+ 93 df 9.5

Also paired with roast lamb. Perfect but no need to rush on these. Another 5 left at least. Both raspberry and blackberry and lovely herbs. Some tannins still evident but nicely integrating.

This is drinking beautifully right now, we worth the wait! Really elegant and balanced, but with enough fruit and tannins to pair it brilliantly with roasted lamb. Complex tertiary aromas and long smooth aftertaste.

Wow, what a fantastic nose! Roasted black cherries and meat garnished with flash-grilled herb switches. Medium-full bodied and loads of fruit! Rich and sweet with loads of loads of kirsch liquer, roasting black cherries, herbs de provence and a bit of meat. This is just absolutely fantastic. As is typical with 2005 CdP, the tannin is abundant and a bit gritty. The only detractor I can think of. Loaded with flavor, the overly rustic/gritty texture takes off a point or two. Drink 2018-2024+ 92

Classic CDP profile. Leather and spice on the nose. Many layers and lots of complexity on the palate. Took about 30 minutes to fully open up, but ready to drink

A little darker and full bodied than I thought this was going to be. This wine poured a dusty rose translucent red color into the glass. The nose was herbal raspberry. The entry was a darker herbal raspberry with a dusty note, clove and sage towards the middle. This wine had a slightly acidic finish. As it sat open, the acidity of the finish really diminished and showed a rather herbal bouquet. If I was blind tasted to this one, I'm not sure that I would have guessed CDP at all. But the slight medicinal, dirty herbal notes all sort of all integrated rather well.

Five years ago I wrote myself a note that this wine would be best to consume sooner rather than later. I haven't tried it again since then and tend to think I called it right back then.
Tasted now, there are surely some positive signs. It shows leather and spice, layered in with some bright kirsch; however, the finish is mostly tannin, and the fruit is not as compellingly brilliant. All in all, I'd say it has taken a step backwards compared with what I thought in the earlier note. If I had another bottle, though, I'd be inclined to try to wait out the structure for a few more years.

Eleventh bottle opened of the case, consistently good, this bottle showed some secondary flavors as herbal notes have become quite prominent along with earth, fresh meat, truffles, ripe plums, smooth and balanced, fully integrated but no hurry to consume.

Decanted a couple of hours. Lavender and herbs on the nose. Some musk and bittersweet chocolate. Taste unfortunately was a little flat. Felt the fruit was receding. May have passed its prime. Too bad was looking forward to this. Nose excellent, mouthfeel disappointing. No score.

Decayed 1hr, light sediment, Meaty nose, with red plum, cherry, red currants. The palate was complex and quite balanced with equal amounts of plum, cherry, currants, blood, kirsh and earth. This was my tenth bottle of 12, no hurry to finish off the case.

Excellent CndP. Mature & fine nose with barnyard, leather, spices, cherry fruit, tobacco and cedar wood. Palate is mature and balanced, no heat present, nor overly oaked, even though the oak is there. Fine fruit present, with good acidity and spiciness. Cherries, currants, earth and mushrooms. Ready to enjoy, and a very fine price vs. quality. Buy and cellar this wine, the effort will be rewarded. I enjoyed this allot, and much better than many higher priced CndP’s. (89 – 91)

Ripe berries and cherries, lavender, mints, stewed plums, smoked wood, wet pebbles, and barely noticeable barnyard in the nose; ripe berries, cherries, and plums, bitter chocolate, and wood spices on the palate; fruity, spicy, and sweet finish of medium+ length; overall, 90-91 points; much more approachable and enjoyable than the previous bottle tasted in 2013; yet still not quite there yet to me.

- Ruby color with medium forming legs. It's somewhat balanced with a light/medium body. Round texture with a medium finish - Aromas of dark berries, oriental spices, pipe tobacco and chocolate covered sweet anis licorice. Flavors of dark blackberry pie, over mature apples, blueberry jam and vanilla.

PNP, 10th bottle tasted since 2010, big nose with plenty of meat/animal blood, the palate is filled with kirsh, truffles, earth, hints of raspberry and plum. Cannot tell you the last time when I have enjoyed a wine/food pairing such as this. Served with veal, venison sausage, mushrooms, garlic in a roasted red pepper sauce on a rather cold late winter night and it truly was a marriage made in heaven. Best bottle yet and based on this one plenty of life left, old world at it's best! Yum

Pours a medium garnet. Initial aromos of ripe plum, fig, sweet tobacco, and boysenberry. The palate is medium rich with flavors of red berry, hints of woodiness, mint. After 30 minutes in the glass notes of coffee grounds, smoke, and earth emerge. Acid bite and medium tannin on the finish. Solid for the money.

Medium-bodied, red-fruited wine with notes of dried cherry and berry with tobacco leaf, and spice on the finish. I was a little disappointed in that I felt like the wine drank older than it should've. The fruit was fading at this point and a little bit of astringent tannin was coming through as a result and the finish was shorter than expected. However, it was still a good wine and this could be bottle variation.

PNP. this bottle did not show as well as privious. maybe it was the lack of a decant, maybe caught it at the wrong time, maybe just an off bottle. Not sure what the deal was, drinkable none the less.

Decanted for 2 hours before approaching. Ruby in glass with the faintest auburn hue. Strong nose of black cherry, leather, and dirt. Very muscular and brooding on the palate; leather, tobacco, baker’s spices, and kirsch. There is a nice minerality as well, a little astringent at first but that blew off, along with the tannins. The backside of the palate showed baker’s chocolate, ink, and black coffee, somewhat disjointed from the front. Over time these flavors integrated into the red fruit, which was initially more noticeable on the fore-palate. 3 to 4 hours after opening (including the 2 hour decant) this was in a very nice spot. To my surprise, at 4.5 hours it completely fell apart, the nose and palate became very hot and boozy, as though it were a completely different wine. The only discernible note was strong, syrupy red fruit, I was very disappointed as it had showed such promise.

Masculine is a good descriptor, tannic and a little boozy. It gained much from a day on the counter and could benefit from 5 more years. I'm out of these but if I had more I'd hold it for a while.

Wine Night 3/1/13: Tasting notes on the leftovers the next morning, rebottled and recorked overnight. Labeled at 14% ABV
Mature brick reddish color. Very Chateauneufy...Cherries and raspberries, garrigue/herbs, baking spice, a citrus note - grapefruit?, licorice, some funk, hint of flowers. Palate reflects much of the same.
Quite astringent and drying on the finish, bitter medium tannins. This benefited from a few hours in the decanter, but it hasn't done much overnight. This will last in the bottle for quite a while, but I'm not sure it's going to go anywhere from here. Drink it now with an hour or two in the decanter, or leave it for a while longer in the bottle if you want. Good bottle of CdP, decent QPR.

Popped and poured from a bottle I brought to a restaurant, and really needed a couple of hours decant. Improved over time in the glass and was better on the second night.
At start, alcohol and barnyard aroma's were noticeable, along with a nose of sweet and tart red fruit and spices - cherry and blackberry with spice and vanilla. Slightly tart.
Solid fruit, but not as smooth as I like - however, got better with time. Dark berries, solid spice and tannins that had not smoothed out yet. Not a bad bottle, but needs more time and wouldn't rush out to buy more.
89 - 90 points. May improve with some more time in the cellar.

Phew, took more than 2 hours to breathe in the bottle for the strong barnyard smell to subside first (should have used a decanter instead); after most of the somewhat disturbing odor was gone, wow, what a nose; very smoky and stony with lots of lavenders, minerals, overly ripe cherries and plums, and some roses and caramels in the background; on the palate, loads of cassis, bacon, bitter chocolate, and mixed spices followed by some dry oak; the creamy, meaty, and spicy finish was medium in length; 89-90 points for now and a few more years were definitely needed for this wine to age properly and put all the good elements in balance and harmony; therefore won't touch this wine for 3 years at least.

Decanted. Lovely, deep red. Nose w tobacco, black pepper, some barnyard. Medium to full body, tannins well rounded but still powerful. Fills the palate and lingers quite nicely. Very near its peak as far as my taste is concerned. High quality wine, but does not compare to the more expensive of this producers many excellent wines.

A decent effort for a CDP though I would benchmark CDPs against the Roger Sabon house which to me is one of the finest, best value CDPs. The Guigal effort is less balanced and elegant compared to the Roger Sabon house. The colour appears had a tinge of brown and the nose was strong of the earth and the taste mildly tannic. Body is medium and the finish, dry and short.....

I let this wine sit in the duck decanter for about 30 min just to let it breath a bit; as the reviews I had read in the past said that is was a tight year and demanded a bit more aging that usual. They were right.
This was a phenomenal wine that went accompanied with roasted meat, kale with mushrooms, pomegranate seeds, pão de queijo and butter, and butter squash soup. The perfect compliment to the dish.
The nose was satisfying and presented red fruits, currant, and hints of earth. The palate confirmed this as the Grenache, Syrah, Counoise, Cinsault, and other dance around the palate revealing dired cherry, a hint of strawberry, and other red fruit. There is also apparent earth and the wine was dry just as the climate of the area.
I always enjoy a good bottle of CDP and this was up there with the best that I have had. Yet again, E. Guigal does not disappoint with his offering. I would recommend this vintage to anyone as well as any vintage of the CDP by E. Guigal, as it never fails to deliver.

(from memory) Opaque ruby, sweet nose of kirsch, garrigue, Asian spices, black pepper and vanilla, spicy on the attack with brambly red and dark fruits firing on the mid-palate, complex finish of mixed berries with juicy tannins buffered by violets, roses and other floral notes

Barnyard aromas in the nose, sweet red fruit that gives an impression of raspberry or cherry liqueur, but also some dark berries, spice, chocolate and a hint of vanilla. Rather powerful on the palate, slightly alcoholic attack, red and dark berries, quite spicy, rather tough tannins that kick in mid-palate and remain in the aftertaste. Nice nose with some development but the palate feels young, and hasn't quite come together. Should benefit from a few more years of cellaring or good aeration, if drunk now. 89+

Let breathe for about three hours in the bottle. Dark rustic bramble berries, mocha dust, anise, touches of juicy raspberries and earth. Palate is darker styled but still red, not purple or black. A little dirt trail and touches of smoke and black licorice. Nice elegance. Rich but not overdone. Clean finish. Resolved tannins and moderate acid and alcohol. Nice but nothing too special or unique. Text book CdP.

Dark ruby red. Appealing nose showing bright red fruit and dried herbs. Full bodied and showing a hit darker fruit than the nose would lead one to believe. Tons of brambly black fruit and black pepper. Medium acidity, and this definitely picks up weight as it takes on air in the glass. A nice lift on the back end as the red fruit shows itself and leads to a lengthy raspberry finish.

I am sure there are more fashionable choices, but for $40, this may be the best red wine on the market. It is just damn delicious. It absolutely bursts with clean Grenache fruit, delivered in a silky mouthfeel of a package. There is a bit of tannin, yes, and the wine may become even silkier with time in the bottle. I wouldn't risk the loss of this great fruit with any extended aging, myself. I remember how decadent the 2000 Janasse Chaupin was in its youth. This wine reminds of that. The 2000 Chaupin is still plenty tasty, but given it to do over, I would have drunk more of it sooner.

If not for the very strong barnyard, the wine would deserve some of the peer ratings close to or above 90. However, the barnyard is just too overwhelming to allow for anything better than 86. Will let it breathe another three hours and amend the tasting note if appropriate.

Very masculine styled, but not inconsistently so for the vintage. Firm, grippy tannins with an abundance of dark fruit, tobacco and leather. There's abit of anise sneaking about in the backround with garrigue notes throughout. The finish is just abit clipped. This is a very nice, fairly aggressive CdP thats drinking fine today if given enough time in the decanter. I thought it needed about 3 hours of air before it opened. This was my first taste of Guigal's CdP. For a Northern Rhone guy, he does Southern Rhone quite well.

Full disclosure: 1st CdP for me. Costco ~$42. Very pleasant nose from the cork pop with fresh leather and bright red fruit quickly followed by floral notes and then fresh earth. Taste was similar and for my palate was mostly floral and then fresh barnyard. With decanting the floweriness continued, the earthiness was more moist and hint of mineral. Nice, I will go back for more.

No real notes. Popped and poured and then let breath 20-30 minutes. Needs much more time to breath and in the bottle. Having said that EVERYONE loved the wine who loves CdP. I thought it was very young and needs another 2-5 years. Nevertheless, it drank very well with smooth tannins and little acidity but there was a good deal of earth and must on the palate. A great year for CDP. Probably Guigals finest effort since the 99 vintage where it was the WS #1 wine of the year. Guigal sources the juice for this wine, but it is there care after that and the fact and that they have one of the best winemaking operations in the Rhone that contribute to the quality of this wine

Grand Vin Schlossgut Diel and E. Guigal Dinner (Ristorante Bologna, Marina Mandarin): Very young, but clearly a very nice effort. For the price, it is certainly worth getting a couple of bottles, sticking them into the cellar, and forgetting about them for 15 years. Nose was rather lovely. A bit much on the glycerol for my tastes, but with plenty of deep cherry tones, garrigue herbs, earth, chalky mineral and peppery spice swimming alongside the alcohol - all in all macking a pretty attractive proposition. Palate was oh so young and shy. Very tight indeed. Just bits of earth, mineral and dusky cherries seasoned with touches of dried herbs and spices and a bit of smoke. Very subtle, very primary. What was obvious though was good concentration, a nice poise and elegance and just perfect balance between the fruit, the high acidity and the fine tannins. Very nice finish too - good elegant length, bits of spice. Once again, just marred by a little alcohol, but overall, a really nice wine that should develop into quite a beauty in time to come.

Drink 2018-2024+

Cannot tell you the last time when I have enjoyed a wine/food pairing such as this. Served with veal, venison sausage, mushrooms, garlic in a roasted red pepper sauce on a rather cold late winter night and it truly was a marriage made in heaven.

Awesome juice - not especially terroir-driven, but packed with great structure, intense dark fruit, meat and a very high delicious factor.

Third time sampling this wine and it is developing nicely. Funk, Garrique, raspberry and stones combine to create a nice CDP under $50. Should develop and improve with time.

same as previous note except in addition to floral, mineral, barnyard, and leather flavors I appreciated meat. perhaps more pronounced due to shorter decant.

No formal note. Dusty clay & earth, leather with some red fruit. Very nice.

Seductive, complex nose of brick dust, black pepper, herbs, some blackberry/raspberry, and a bit of vanilla oak. Balanced, smooth palate featuring similar tastes as the nose, a bit of earth.

Saturdays at One - Volume 46: WIML92-93
Tasted non blind.
Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of potpourri, lavender, boysenberry, berries and cherries. Rich flavors of black berries, raspberries, cherries and a bit of plum. Medium to bright acidity, medium to firm tannins, full bodied. Drink or hold but I'd be inclined to hold a little longer.

Southern France (Farpointe Cellar): The nose had roasted coffee beans and cigar leaves, some veal stock and cherry, and some spice. Rich and juicy on the palate, with lots of red fruit and earth. The mocha comes on strong on the mid-palate and the tabacco on the finish.

Licorice, plum, horse saddle, garrigue, black earth, complex, very expressive! Musky, beautiful, meaty notes with still high acidity; great integrated tannins at this stage, softer but enticing black fruit and minerals; excellent, complex, balanced fruit and minerals. Maybe 93.

Very balanced wine.

Beautiful, floral nose with bright fruit. Earth and leather on the palate, but still predominantly young fruit. Medium-bodied. Very enjoyable on it's own, and drinking well now.

Pepper, barnyard, earth and spices comprised this Old World styled CDP. Too many are getting away from this style. Good acidity and not too tannic. This can be cellared five years or drink now. Good overall value CDP.

Fruit at the beginning with some spice later. Some tannins, but not harsh. Could easily be aged another few years to soften

Popped, poured and drank from the wrong kind of glasses so I won't give a score. A bit young , tight and muted, but it might be due to the lack of decanting and the glasses.

Genka Wine Fair: (tasted in gen.ka wine fair) It seems closed, some fruit and spices, apparent tannins but well made and round. Spices again in the palate, medium aftertaste. It feels ready now, it will drink nicely for another decade.

Not too bad. They had several 375's on sale at a local market and this was one I picked up to try. Hints of welches grape juice and pepper on the nose with a palate of beef jerkey, ribs and dark fruit. Not overly complex but simple pleasing to drink
