  • Not decanted. From a small bottle. A really great young Pichon Lalande. For me, the best young wine from this estate, only the 2016 vintage impressed me even more when young. I think it will be an exceptional wine with about 10 years in the cellar.

  • One of the contenders of wine of the vintage.
Deep and complex with violet and sandalwood, ripe black fruits, pencil shavings, wet stone, toasty wood, some leather. Linger almost full body.

  • Enchanting nose with fragrant layers of blackcurrant, fine spices and cedar. Structured, elegant and fresh on the palate. Incredible persistence on the finish. So much potential.

  • medium deep purple color, pure cassis fruit on the nose- slightly roasted, some oak spice, plum note, on the palate a buttery and joyous fruit akin to the Haut-Brion, for the moment this is all fruit on the palate- and showing beautifully, out of all the wines served tonight this is the one I would open now for dinner if I had to choose, good length, lovely wine and the only question is whether its hallmark nuances will fully emerge in time or if this will remain more fruit-driven.

  • No notes, simply impressions from a couple of ounces. This wine is special and like the previous tastings, it is an entirely new level at PLL Comtesse. This wine has everything and more- it is something special and would rival most wines. Simply Gorgeous now & later.

  • Union Grands Crus Bordeaux (UGC) 2020 Tasting (Hangar 14, Bordeaux): Seductive from the start with creamy, ripe but well delineated fruit. The creaminess gradually decreases but still evident on the long finish. A top-notch Pauillac in every sense and would be very happy to have a case of this in my cellar.

  • Bordeaux 2022 en Primeur and some recent vintages: Those who know the 1982 know what potential this wine has. For a long time however, Pichon Baron was more reliable. Since 2011, the Philippe Moreau is technical director and it has moved upwards steadily. The 2020 and 2022 were world class today. Aromatic depth paired with graceful elegance. Especially with the 2020 (97pt) I was amazed that it has no sign of heaviness. The 2022 (98pt) was even more refined, my WOTN.

  • Bordeaux 2020 - 10 red & 1 sweet wine: Arrivage tasting by a merchant. Be aware, the sample size is quite small but here are a few observations: 1) Overall quality: This is another good vintage in Bordeaux but clearly not on the same level as 2016 or 2019. 2) Ripeness: What I tasted showed less ripe than 2015/18/19. Most wine show fresh dark and blue fruit, the two right banks showed well behaved too. None of the wines showed alcohol heat (a problem in many 18s and some 15s). Overall, I expected more ripeness but maybe the wineries I sampled all just got the picking date right. 3) Complexity: 2020 will not reach the heights of 2016 and for me is also a step or two behind 2015/18/19. 4) Precision: The precision was quite good, although not on the level of the 2016s. 5) Structural frame: The tannins are ripe but have more edges than in 16/18/19 and will need time to soften, the acidity is high and well-integrated, the texture is not as airy as in 2016 but a step above 15/18 and maybe even 19. Overall, the wines showed quite harmonious but without the magical balance of the 2016s (and the best 15/18/19s I had).

TN: Clearly one of the winners of the tasting. Medium expressive on the very elegant and quite layered nose displaying blue and black fruit, tobacco, and soil. Probably the best, most inviting and luxurious nose today. On the palate this is wonderful with fine dark fruit, herbs, minerality, tobacco. While it probably doesn’t have the complexity of the best vintages (16/19?), it is great, complex and with good precision. The tannins are still a tad grainer than in recent years and hence the wine will need a few years to get to an even higher score. 94+pts.

  • Tasted at the Chateau, this is deep, balanced and gorgeous already. A potentially fantastic vintage for PL. 95+

  • A riveting wine in every sense of the word, the perfume grabs you with its array of flowers, spices, tobacco, currants, smoke, cedar and roasted plums. There is intensity, purity, precision and length, which is perfect for allowing you to experience all the layers of silky, sensuous fruits and freshness. The finish crosses the 50 second mark with ease and never looks back. With time in the bottle, this gem could hit triple digits, it is that good! Drink from 2027-2065.

  • UGCB tasting Bordeaux 2020 Walkaround tasting so in general just short notes (Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam.): For me one of the stars of the tasting. So beautiful, elegant and luxurious. Refined and complex bouquet with beautiful fruits, smoke, vanilla and cedar. Same on the palate, beautiful and fresh acidity and round tannin. A great length as well. Really exceptional wine with a great future.

  • The 2020 vintage UGCB tasting in Amsterdam 03/06/2023 (Amsterdam): The bouquet is very subtle with lots of little flowers upon very refined new wood and vanilla, also smooth spices. The high level of refinement, combined with a silky concentration continues in the superbly balanced aftertaste.

  • Beautiful nose - expressive cassis, boysenberry, lead pencil, and tobacco. As much as anything else, it's perhaps the synthesis of heft and deft which best defines Pichon Comtesse in aromatic and textural terms. Juicy, lovely, fresh finish.

  • Classic Pichon Lalande similar to 2019,
    Maybe less refined.

  • Tight, subdued, deep ripe but one dimensional. Definitely needs time. At UGC LA.

  • At the UGC 2020 tasting in Chicago. Pleasing fruit fragrance. Rich concentration yet softer fruit on the palate. Great finish, long aftertaste, expansive flavors that really add to the enjoyment of the wine. Of two dozen wines I tasted this evening only 2 others as good. Should evolve beautifully.

  • (77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 13.6% Alkohol) Was soll ich sagen? Big Wine. 2026-2050 (Verkostet am 8. November 2022 in Zürich) www.vvwine.ch

  • At a tasting of recently bottled 2020s. The exception to the rule that in this vintage the more expensive left bank wines are dark and tannic; Comtesse has gone to the other end of the spectrum and I found it a touch too soft for my taste and too hard on the wallet. Still, it will make a fascinating comparison with its neighbour for decades to come. Comtesse always had relatively soft tannins due in part to being at the high end of merlot content for the left bank, yet they usually more structure than this. Still a lovely wine.

  • Arvi Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage (Dolder Grand, Zurich): Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).

    Tasting note:
Nicely floral with a sweet cherry fruit, earth and elements of dried herbs. Compared to Pichon Baron and Lynch Bages, in comparison the fruit was fresher, less extracted and sweeter. This translated seamlessly to the palate. Detailed and precise, but maybe lacking quite the depth of the other two mentioned. Hard to pick a favorite.

  • The 2020 is a large-scaled version of Pichon Comtesse in true form to the vintage style, but its inherent elegance shines through as well. The amazing thing about the 2020s is that, though they are big wines, the tannins are very smooth - and that plays well with the classical Comtesse style. Ultimately, this black-fruited, rich rendition of PCL should be quite fun.

  • Epic Bordeaux for an Epic Birthday!; 9/1/2021-9/12/2021 (Paris & Bordeaux): For many this was a favorite wine in the tasting and certainly it could be the inbetween of my favorites (the '18 and '19). It's again got a bit of that lightness and delicate style of the '19 with just a bit more power. The piece that gave me pause is the finish is a quicker here. Red fruits. A bit less ripe. Bright. Will be interesting to see how it goes with time. 77% CS, 17% Merlot, 6% CF

  • 2021 Bordeaux Tasting Trip; 7/12/2021-7/16/2021 (Bordeaux): A tasting in Bordeaux of 71 wines, some of the best I have ever had and others, umm, well were disappointing. If you read the Tasting story (and my grading history) I think it will do a much better job putting this in perspective.

The 2020 Pichon Lalande Comtesse is a wine of the vintage and one that drastically closes the gap between its first growth neighbors. Wow this vintage and starting with the ‘18 vintage puts the other Chateaus on notice. This wine is the complete package from the depth of the flavors to the kaleidoscope of complexity and the wonderful three phases. What a wonderful wine and one that I can’t wait to experience through the years. Can be drank young and is pretty amazing now, yes really, and will benefit from age.

I have never been a big fan of Lalande Comtesse, have tasted a number (and own a fair amount) of the better vintages but they never wow’d me and quite frankly the Pichon Baron 2010 is a standout (for my palate anyway) between the two. Originally I only purchased a handful but the ‘18 & ‘20 tasting this week completely changed my perspective as this wine is spectacular.

2026-2050 (April/Mai 2021) vvWine.ch

  • Pronounced nose intensity with notes of black fruits, classic, spices, mint. High acidity and tannin. The tannin is velvety

  • Deep, dark and almost opaque in hue, the perfume is intoxicating with its spice box, dark Cuban cigars, violets, lilacs, oak, savory herbs, roasted plums, currants and cigar box aromas. On the palate the wine is pure silk and velvet with layer after layer of supple textured fruits. Silky, sexy and sensuous, there is richness, depth of flavor, length and purity here that is a treat to feel and taste. The wine blends 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, 13.6% ABV 3.82 pH. Picking took place September 9 - September 30. Yields were low, 30 hectoliters per hectare, 60% of the harvest was placed into the Grand Vin. 97-99

  • Near opaque
Expressive nose, a speckled quality, spicy and floral and gorgeous raspberry fruit. Has a seamless, fresh feel.

Similarly open on the palate, with a lovely coolness, and very finely textured. Cool, dark and elegant, fine toast and very fine tannins.

  • Tasted En-Primeur on 26-04-2021 in a tasting with 125 wines of the 2020 Bordeaux Vintage.
In recent years, always "on" and thankfully 2020 is no exception!
It is perhaps not as great as 2018 or 2016, but it does posses the iron fist in a velvet glove type of polished silkiness. Stylish, dark and dense. 96-98
