  • This is my third encounter with the 2020 Léoville Poyferré, this time at home with plenty of time to chart its course - and thank goodness for that. This has certainly become much easier to taste than it was just over a year ago, the nose more expressive a big, naturally ripe boysenberry, cassis, and lilac nose, managing to stay just shy of over-ripeness. The tannin, which previously seemed a bit grating, seems to match the large-scale body now and the ripe coolness of the 2020 vintage comes through. A long, blue and black fruit finish bodes well for the future. 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot brought in between Sept 14-30.

This is a wine that really seemed the odd man out among the St. Juliens at the UGC in early 2023 and which benefitted from an unhurried evaluation, checking in over the course of 24 hours. I think there's little doubt that the Rolland influence shone through in 2020 in a way that it didn't so much from 2016-2019, say, and one wonders if it might have achieved a little more elegance with a little gentler extraction. Yet it's OK to be different, too, and with the benefit of watching this unfold over time (closing down hard after an hour of air, shining at hour 12, fading at hour 24) it's easier for me to be optimistic about this developing into an excellent wine, even if it marches a bit to the beat of its own drum among the St. Julien grands crus classes.

Drinking from 2040 on. 94-96 point potential.

  • Early note here… primary and quite luxurious, savory dark fruit straight away on the palate. While not overly giving out the shoot on the nose I can get whiffs of the Quality perfume… it comes and goes. Surely it is coiled up
Still. A bit of oak, but to me is quite restrained vs the 2019 Barton I finished up today. 94+

  • 13.5% ABV. Deep ruby appearance. Decanted for 2.5 hours. Drinking for scientific purposes. Also, shout out to the folks at Poyferre for giving us this sexy black and gold “Cuvelier 100th anniversary” bottling for the ‘20 vintage.

Notes of red and black bramble fruit, nutmeg, coffee grounds, cedar, lead pencil, damp earth. Tannins a bit rough around the edges and distracting. Acidity is fine, good enough to hold up to the fruit. Length of finish is good, not great. Alcohol isn’t integrated seamlessly - I detected some heat in the back palate.

I really like the concentration, polish and balance of the fruit here. However, this is a bit hard to read and very foursquare at this point. The oak influence is borderline overpowering as well. Overall, it’s good, but I’m not sold on this given the bottle price and pedigree of Poyferre. If you want a Saint Julien, Langoa Barton is half the price and to me, outperforms Poyferre in ‘20 at least right now. This needs a LONG decant if you want to open now but it really needs a good amount of time in the cellar to round into form in my opinion.

  • Purple flowers, black and blue fruits, right amount of oak and underlying minerals.

  • From the 2020 Bordeaux Release - Day 2. The wines included: Grand Puy Ducasse, Grand Puy Lacoste, La Fleur de Gay and Léoville Poyferré. All were unique in their own way. Nice to taste different regions side by side as you can distinguish the differences in nose and palette right away.

The Léoville Poyferré was obviously young and tight. Nose of red fruit, meat juices, oak, nuts. Very tight tannins with spicy characters. Other than those early notes, it’s not budging. Potential is absolutely present but otherwise much too early to access at this point. Future 95 pts wine. Today nothing past 92.

  • Union Grands Crus Bordeaux (UGC) 2020 Tasting (Hangar 14, Bordeaux): Huge potential for this. Great intensity with everything present for an outstanding wine with some time in bottle. The fruit is gorgeous. Merlot appears to be very successful here, with the petit verdot adding extra interest. A standout.

  • A second encounter with this is similar to the first with a really big, coffee-filled nose, rich with black fruit. Very dense and tannic in the mouth with enough acid and body to make it work - but this will take ages to actually drink. Again, this seems a marked stylistic deviation from the 2015-2019 era when I felt that Leoville Poyferre was regaining its status as one of St. Julien's most beautiful, elegant wines (in the vein of the great 1990).

  • Bordeaux 2020 - 10 red & 1 sweet wine: Arrivage tasting by a merchant. Be aware, the sample size is quite small but here are a few observations: 1) Overall quality: This is another good vintage in Bordeaux but clearly not on the same level as 2016 or 2019. 2) Ripeness: What I tasted showed less ripe than 2015/18/19. Most wine show fresh dark and blue fruit, the two right banks showed well behaved too. None of the wines showed alcohol heat (a problem in many 18s and some 15s). Overall, I expected more ripeness but maybe the wineries I sampled all just got the picking date right. 3) Complexity: 2020 will not reach the heights of 2016 and for me is also a step or two behind 2015/18/19. 4) Precision: The precision was quite good, although not on the level of the 2016s. 5) Structural frame: The tannins are ripe but have more edges than in 16/18/19 and will need time to soften, the acidity is high and well-integrated, the texture is not as airy as in 2016 but a step above 15/18 and maybe even 19. Overall, the wines showed quite harmonious but without the magical balance of the 2016s (and the best 15/18/19s I had).

TN: Brief impressions only. The Poyferre showed a beautiful expressive dark fruit core, good concentration and sweetness, a bit of minerality but a tad less layered than other wines today. The tannins are a bit grippy but it still has a good balance

  • Even better in the beautiful, black and gold bottle celebrating 100 years of ownership, than it was from the barrel, the wine instantly grabs your attention with its dark color and its equally dark-fruited profile centered on its core of blackberries, black cherries, black plums, spices, espresso, and dark chocolate. The wine is deep, rich, concentrated, and lush, as well as fresh, silky, vibrant, long, and focused. The finish leaves you with layers of sweet, ripe, black and blue fruit, chocolate, espresso, and a touch of spice that comes in at the end of the silky finish. The wine blends 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2026-2055.

  • UGCB tasting Bordeaux 2020 Walkaround tasting so in general just short notes (Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam.): Lush and luxurious bouquet with beautiful and ripe dark fruits, luxurious oak and cedar, beautiful acidity and round tannin. An outstanding and luxurious wine with a great future. 96+

  • The 2020 vintage UGCB tasting in Amsterdam 03/06/2023 (Amsterdam): Compared to the Barton in this year the Poyferré has, for me, the lead; lovely flowers in the bouquet, more concentration and more juice, and a refined body with lots of fruit ending in a very balanced aftertaste.

  • The 2020 seems quite a deviation from Leoville Poyferre's track between 2015 and 2019, showing a really big, robust, reticent character, begrudgingly showing some black fruit and a huge whack of tannin. Hard to analyze now; hard to taste at the moment. Different from not only the Leoville Poyferres of the recent past, but quite different from the other 2020 St. Juliens on show at the UGC.

November 2022 in Zürich) www.vvwine.ch

  • At a tasting of recently bottled 2020s. One of the best wines of the evening. Very good nose. Extraction becoming rather serious to match the price and fancy label. I've followed the rise of Poyferré from one of the few 2000s that actually deserved its hype and have bought most vintages since. This serious style will require a lot more time before drinking. Bought a half case en primeur out of habit because the evolution is fascinating alongside Barton and in the past both were great value. Overshadowed by Barton this time.

  • Arvi Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage (Dolder Grand, Zurich): Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).

    Tasting note:
Ripe, on balance slightly more red cherry fruit, earthy base notes and floral high notes. Elements of sweet spice and dried herbs. Palate still pretty wild and a tad rustic, but still came across a more elegant and precise than Barton even thought the latter was more layered.

  • Feinster Kaffee, roter und blauer Beerenreigen. Genial!

2030-2050+ (April/Mai 2021) vvWine.ch

  • Silky, polished, lusciously textured and rich, the wine pops from the glass with incense, smoked berries, cherry blossoms, creme de cassis, tobacco leaf and blue fruit. Full-bodied, silky and opulently textured, this concentrated wine offers layers of deep, ripe fruits that simultaneously coat your palate, yet feel fresh and vibrant. The flamboyant, seamless finish builds in intensity as it expands on your palate. 96-98

  • Nice nose, fruit forward, floral with touch of spice and oak. Medium bodied with somewhat overripe fruit, good depth, silky texture and linear towards the end. 94-95

  • Youthful, dense, sweet red notes, some robust earthy touches too, though plenty clean and well-defined.
This has a dark core, great presence and feels on the full side of medium-bodied, with some real power and intensity. Fragrant, some chunkiness and plenty of structure, this is serious stuff, another that might just require some patience.
