Deep ruby colour. Medium and developing nose with red cherry, dark plum, fig, vanilla, chocolate and orange marmalade. Medium taste of dark plum, vanilla, fig and orange marmalade. Medium long and sweet finish. Medium acidity. Full body. A good Ruby Port that lacks some complexity and length. Drink now. Goes well with cheeses or chocolate.

Retail $20. Touriga Nacional Touriga Francesca Tinta Barroca Tinta Cão Tinta Roriz. I do not drink much port these days since I have been avoiding most sugar in my diet. Still, I realize I miss port (or is it the sweetness?), it's rich fruit, depth of flavor, and incredible balance. Here we go. No, this is not the *best* port I have tried, but at twenty bucks (probably under $15 on the shelves?)? One could do a whole lot worse. Very Good.
Deep purple color. Classic nose of roasted figs, plum sauce, smoky earth, clove and cedar. Full but fresh, smooth tannins and moderate acidity. Plum cake, figs, the fruit mixes with notes of potpourri, tar, cedar, clove and tobacco. Yummy stuff.

The third Port in a trio I recently purchased this one is a Special Reserve. It's way more opaque than the Ruby I tasted previously. The nose has nuts, lots of them, plus rich blueberry compote, blackberry jam, prunes, stewed cherry and raspberry. A virtual melange of red, black and blue fruit. The nuts are fascinating- walnuts, pecan and filberts. The palate is mouth-coating with delicious, rich fruit and lithe tannins. Medium (-) acidity allows this wine's fruit to shine whilst the tannins sneak out to the finish. Stewed blackberry, blueberry and cherry are the primary fruit flavors. Walnut and pecan with a faint trace of smoke round it out. The tannins are very fine-grained and stick around for a while. This is delicious stuff, no doubt. I got it for $16, and it gets 91 points from me upending the Fine Ruby as my new go-to Port to stock up on. 5 stars for sure.

{375ml, cork, 20%, A$13} This is pretty simple stuff. Basic red fruits, enlivened with brandy spirit, off-dry-ish, mostly disappoints with lack of depth and finish; overall a light/medium-bodied fortified of no real distinction. An object lesson in getting rid of the inferior barrels, but still under the brand name; not sure of the long-term value in that approach. Not a wine I'd buy again, even at the bargain price; spend twice the money and get something better.

Bought on the basis that the current batch of NV Special Reserve had won a silver medal at the International Wine Challenge 2017. Oh dear. I wonder which specially selected samples they were tasting? To be fair, it shows decent fruit - mainly cherry (with maraschino) and prunes with vanilla and some slightly woody flavours. Easy to quaff but it is a very ordinary example with little to distinguish it from a host of cheaper ruby ports.

Etihad Business CLass & Lounges; 11/20/2017-11/24/2017 (Sydney, Abu Dhabi, Frankfurt): Bitey cherry notes. Sweet brambly fruit; lots of heat. Warm, fairly even balance on the tongue, off-dry if you like. Medium weight. Rather one-dimensional in character, with fresh grapey flavours and a brandied heat. Not much back palate; short/medium finish other than the alcohol. Gosh, port notes are a challenge!

Douro Samples: Dark ruby colored. Nose of saucy black cherries, fig cookies, vanilla and dark chocolate shavings. Cannot remember when or where or how long ago but was in the mood for port and wanted to keep it simple so I pulled this. Light for a ruby found it thin at the edges. Nose was straightforward rain prune cherries lots of alcohol. Palette was sweet dried fruits again some heavy alcohol bit of nuts a and burnt wood. For the price a good value based on what I see people are paying I don't remember my price point. Won't blow away a port drinker but at the same time they won't look at you crazy for serving it

A bright, dark ruby with hints of terracotta at the edges. Smells like alcoholic cherry pie, lots of baked red and black fruit, plenty of raisins, prunes and dried figs. Palate more of the same. Full bodied, low acidity, obviously sweet and with good intensity of flavour. Unfortunately lacking in depth and complexity but a solid, tasty port for a night at home in winter. At little over ten dollars for a half bottle, great value.

Good for a basic ruby. Simple, soft and extremely fruity, with a boatload of sweet raspberries. A bit soft and simple, but quite adequate and I can see this style working with chocolate. On day 2, this settled down a bit and became less syrupy and sweet and in general, better integrated.

With Leslie G in NYC (Chelsea) and Jen: This port was great. We had it with 3 types of chocolates, including the ones with ginger (great pairing). And with the Stilton cheese, which was also a great pairing. I liked how changeable the port was, with the various foods, and how harmoniously it paired. Great QPR for $14/bottle.

But second one was ok. Charcoaly nose with slightly appley fruit, baked berries and some dark wood tones. Good to keep open in the bar for casual wine/cheese late dinner. Excellent value ($12). That said, wholly lacking in complexity or depth. Light to medium bodied, light red color. Tastes of thick, acidic red fruit. Direct, linear taste (maybe a bit too sweet) that is sadly constrained - rather than supported -- by the thin, too-long, slighly green or perhaps even metallic aftertaste.

Sipped this with some very rich turtle brownies. A decent pairing with such strong chocolate, but this probably wouldn't be very satisfying to sip by itself (the way we usually sip port). Not a very long finish. Not bad given the price though.

I'm not a big fan of port, but this is hubby's favorite, and I was not dissapointed. Sipped with teriyaki grilled salmon and a "stew" of tomatoe, onion, raisin. We both enjoyed it with the sweetenss of the teriyaki and the blend of veggie/fruitflavors.Will cellar the other two for a while, and check back when I want to suprise him again...;-)

A very lightweight appearance and it looks rather young: bright ruby with hints of mauvish purple. Rather poor on the nose: insipid with more alcohol/spirit than fruit. Fairly light on the attack. Very sweet. Virtually no fruit. Sugar, sweet and sour alcoholic finish. Awful. (This must be a bad bottle.)

This is simply an average NV port with major flavors consisting of candied plum and dark fruits. There is little complexity and it finishes quite hot. Overall it is decent and drinkable, but nothing more.

Nice, straightforward port for casual drinking. Lots of fruit, with some raisins and chocolate notes, and a tiny peppery bite in the finish.

Good, but not as rich or complex as the other reserves

Sipped this with some very rich turtle brownies. A decent pairing with such strong chocolate, but this probably wouldn't be very satisfying to sip by itself (the way we usually sip port). Not a very long finish. Not bad given the price though.

Tasted at the Cockburn Port Lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia - Grapey nose. Dark ruby color. Glow in the dark rim. Nice! Sweet but balanced. Fruity and ready to drink. A better NV ruby port– 87 points.
