Opened and poured with burrito night. Pours a ruby to pink/slight oranging on the rim. Cork showed some weakening and disintegrative beginnings...Medium bodied, expressive pinot nose on the slightly musky side. Nice and integrated, with good fruit still - showing plum, dark strawberry, hoisin, fruit leather. Alcohol well integrated - not too hot.

PnP, then drank 3 days later kept in cellar. Still some fruit left on opening. Like the nose initially but quite significant heat on the palate with some bitterness. Typical over-ripened, high alcohol RR Pinot. Once enjoyed it a while ago but not any more. When tried it 3 days after opening, fruits are gone. Still quite low on acidity. It is just way too heavy and ripe with not enough acidity to be harmonized. Won't buy KB any more unless they have significant change in wine making style even at $60.

This is the last of my 2006 Kosta Browne Amber Ridge Pinots. It was originally purchased from the winery when first released and has always been stored while aging at 55 degrees and 60% humidity. The wine was a little cold when first opened, having come straight from my wine cave. We took our time and let it warm up a little in the glass. To the eye this Pinot was a red ruby color, with a mineral toast and hints of black pepper on the nose. The first tastes was of a well aged, smooth Pinot with some pepper and blackberries on the palette. It had a medium body and a very smooth texture. As the bottle was slowly consumed over more than an hour, the Pinot continued to develop more structure with some acidity and a long finish. For a not-so-great vintage, this 2006 has certainly held up well.

Medium red color with pink rim. The explosive nose displayed red raspberry, cherry, orange blossom, brown sugar notes, cola, and spice. On the palate, there was cherry, red raspberry, orange blossom, rhubarb, earth, and spice. Structurally, there was good acidity, with a slight chill, in this medium-bodied wine, and at higher temperatures, this wine was a little flabby. The finish had good length, ripe fruit, and spice notes. Overall, this wine is not massive, but ripe and well made. What is most interesting is the impact of temperature on the wine - flabby at higher temperatures and more expressive and likeable at cooler temperatures.

Full nose of black cherry, rhubarb, cola and christmas spice. Palate is medium-rich, medium-to-full bodied and well-balanced with the exception of a touch pf warmth as the wine comes to room temp. There is more elegance and restraint here than I typically find in K-B. Perhaps mellowing and evening out with age. Enjoyable.

A lovely, mature California pinot. Showing a bit of age in color, with bricking at the edges. Some savory aspects on the nose, with notes of mushroom and underbrush complementing a cherry core, with smoky and woodsy aromas as well. On the palate, bright cherry and raspberry, tending toward the tart side, with a flinty finish. Great with food. No hint of alcohol. Loved this.

This KB was an interesting experience. The previous 06 Amber Ridge we had about 2 years ago was one of the best Pinot's I've ever tasted, so I was ready for a wonderful repeat, but, it wasn't to be.......When initally opened, the good news was, the nose was very floral with vibrant up front cherry and raspberry aroma's, and when tasted, the flavors of plums, cherries, cola and a hint of cedar box spice were evident, however, the wine never completely "opened up" and the alcohol was too heavy and gave a somewhat unbalanced feel, which was dissapointing, especially when comparing this bottle with previous KB Pinot's.

Actually a very pleasant Pinot Noir. I was afraid, given the vintage and style of the producer, that this wine would be over the top, but it was actually a balanced wine, dominated by red fruit, cola and spices. Maybe a little bit sweet, but not to much.

Slightly brickish red. Pleasant with rich cherry and a fair degree of heat, which was tempered by serving at cellar temperature. Will see what the other half of the bottle holds tomorrow night.
Second night (actually, third night after two in filled half-bottle, returned to cellar) was a bit better, with the fruit becoming more prominent and the hot finish mellowing slightly.

Enjoyed with fennel glazed duck breast, which was a fantastic pairing. Bright red perfumed fruit on the nose leading to a mouth-filling palate of black rasperries. This kept with the lighter stylistic notes of the 2006 vintage, but was solidly rooted in classic KB complexity.

This wine was serially tasted in non-blinded fashion. The robe is deep ruby/red and the nose shows quite intense aromas of cranberries, cola, Bing cherries and spice box. Medium-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity, medium sweet tannins, well-integrated alcohol and ripe red fruit flavors. The middle palate is solid and the medium-to-long finish is smooth. A very nice effort from a good producer. Drink now-12/16.

Just short of 2 years since the last bottle, I continue to be mildly underwhelmed. Some of that is undoubtedly due to high expectations, but this still presents as a dark brooding Pinot that is perplexingly simple in the mouth. Cherry, strawberry, cranberry in a well made package, but little, to my taste, to justify the price tag.

--- COLOR: Brilliant deep ruby NOTE: Bought directly from the winery and though it's not necessarily an abused bottle it hasn't been stored in consistent conditions for the past year. This survived much better than the 05/06 Aston 115/667 and the 05 Chasseur Blank. Best of the bunch. Still has a wonderful floral freshness in the nose, with pungent pink rose and cranberry and wild strawberry showing up. The mouth is medium bodied but has great fresh red fruits as well, with nice leather and tobacco. Seems to be hitting just right and doesn't seem to be tired at all. The finish has a nice sweet red fruit element offset by just the right amount of acid. KB got this one right, and it is a survivor. Not an amazing PN by any means, but it has held up better than many of its peers. Drink 'em if you got 'em.

This bottle took a long time to show itself. The wine was at its best after 3+ hours in the decanter. Earthy nose, with nuances of mushroom, forest floor, black cherry, cola and wood. Palate shows black cherry, smoke, and bittersweet chocolate, with grippy tannin. Not as good as a bottle 18 months ago.

Just OK. Very primary, candied red fruits, decent aromatics, good richness. There should be far more complexity at this price point. Had a ton of heat and became really cloying after several hours. Drank this alongside the 04 Domaine Drouhin Laurene and the DDO put the KB to shame. Seriously.

Deep dark fruit and forest-y spice predominate in this big-framed pinot. It could use more bottle age but already has that soft smooth texture that Kosta Browne seems to have mastered.

What is all the hype about? Not sure if some really have the presence of mind to truly enjoy this style of Pinot - awesome wine. This wine is everything that I expect from a Kosta Browne wine, and it is certainly not past its prime or on the down slide. Nicely balanced with all the expected attributes of Pinot in the Kosta Browne style. I am in agreement with the positive comments for this wine. This was fantastic with my Thanksgiving dinner today. No bitterness, fruit on the palate exactly what I have always expected from these wines, and the finish was lovely. I am certainly a "We love them" category guy for these wines.

14.8% alcohol. Dark cherry color. Aromatic nose of vanilla, black cherry, blackberry, and baking spice. In the mouth, vibrant and quite supple, with slightly jammy fruit, an ample spice note, and bright acidity. A touch of heat on the finish, but that doesn't detract from the concentrated, hedonistic pleasure of the wine. A-

I took a trip to Manhattan yesterday to visit our offsite wine storage, and decided to pick up a bottle each of the entire 2006 Kosta Browne lineup. In talking with Michael Browne on Facebook the other day, he seemed to hint that I should give the ‘06’s a whirl, so I am assuming that the thinks these are coming into their prime drinking window now. Or maybe he is just feeling that the ‘06’s are started to fall off now. Really hard to say as we all know that the ’06 vintage was underwhelming. But even so, Dan Kosta and Michael Browne still seemed to make some darn good wines based on the vintage. It’s kind of funny to see how people draw the line with Kosta Browne. Either you love them, you hate them, or you have no opinion on them because you have never had them, yet for whatever reason, you decide to hate them. We just happen to fall into the “WE LOVE THEM” category. When I am in the mood for a giant wine, and a giant pinot noir, I immediately think Kosta Browne, Loring, or Siduri. All great wines, and all rather big on the palate! When we’re in the mood for something like this, these wines fill that void! Popped and poured tonight at Oliver-A Bistro in Bordentown, and it was singing from the get go. As always, this wine had that so familiar Kosta Browne nose, which I have yet to find on any other wine. There is just something so familiar and similar with their wines, and so distinctive. Nice dark ruby color in the glass, with a nose dominated by cherry, some cola, and nice spices. On the palate, another big Kosta Browne, and just what the doctor ordered tonight as we were craving a big pinot! Gorgeous cherries and cola on the palate, with subtle hints of odd red fruits, like pomegranate, cranberry, and even maybe some currants. This really started to strut it's stuff when we were about 1/2 way through our last glasses, so it just shows that this needs some more bottle time, or a 2-4 hour decant. Nice finish, with a bit of alcohol that seemed to blow off as the wine opened up. We have two more, and we'll hold them for at least another year before checking in on them. But even so, another good wine from Kosta Browne, even though this isn't my favorite vineyard from them. 91 points. Cheers!

In the glass, clear dark red. On the nose, a beguiling mix of pinot spice and dark cherries. On the palate, a blend of the same notes, with a medium-long finish that is overtaken by some tannins and an unbalanced alcoholic note. This will probably resolve to a nicer place given a couple of years of cellar time, but it's hard to see that alcoholic note going away completely.

First Amber Ridge for me, so wasn't sure what to expect. Based on other tasting notes I only decanted 30 minutes and served slightly chilled. Nose was generous with bright fruit, spice, a little oak and cherry cola. Palate was layered and balanced, with sweet tannins on the mid-palate and a slightly drier finish that lingered and made you want another taste. Definitely a California style PN. This had the stuffing to stand up to our java crusted grilled pork tenderloin. Drinking great now. No reason to sit on this unless you want to.

My fiance said "this is a pinot?"...Better than a year ago, though her comment is dead on. Big wine, dark violet wine, medium bodied, good fruit, obvious oak, heat on the finish. I am sure it would be pleasing to some, and is decently made, but this is just too much. Needs to be dialed back.

Opened and decanted about 45 minutes. First glass poured and the rest decanted. This tastes shutdown right now and decanting did not change the wine. There was plenty of fruit: bright cherry and black cherry notes but it tasted narrow and reserved and not round and full bodied to me. Needs more time. Good to Very Good right now.
Just read my prior note and it sounds like a different wine!

Opened not decanted. Taken to Rivolli in Berkeley with MBC and R&S. Red and black cherry fruit out of the bottle. Nice body weight and structure as it opened up. Ends with a wet / dry finish. Good to Very Good. Cautionary note: at about the two hour mark the wine started to come apart with the alcohol and fruit separating. I do not recommend decanting this and it should be consumed at one sitting.

Pinot at Rivoli Restaurant (Rivoli Restaurant (Albany, CA)): Excellent rich, mouthfilling cherry, vanilla cream, and brown sugar flavors. Primary, but tasty, with everything in wonderful balance during a relatively short window: this wine fell apart in the glass after about 2 hours. Drink up.

Nose was very nice with cherries, sassafras, a little pinot funk and a slight baking spice component.
Palate didn’t really wow me or live up to the nose, although a wonderful wine, this KB was a little one dimensional; for the price I would stick with the estate bottling which is priced better than the single vineyard juice and you get the same RRV taste that you are looking for.

Pop and pour, consumed over about 2 hours. This bottle showed better then the bottle we had back in January with nice cherry and cola scents and a good spice element. Seems to be a little better balanced on the palate with nice depth and concentration of the fruit and a great finish. Very nice.

My first foray into the '06 KB SVDs, and it did not disappoint. Intriguing nose of clove, pine, and forest floor behind primary notes of cherry icee flavors (sounds wierd, I know, but it works). Very plush mouthfeel, with waves of flavor on the palate -- black cherry, cola, baking spice. Nice acidity keeps it refreshing. Once again, KB answers the call.

Medium to darker dirty red. Full nose showing lots of spices with some ground, green moss. Somewhat downhill from the impressive nose to a rather plane and simple presentatation of cherry stawberries with spice. While it did improve with time open, it nevers gets to the level of richness or complexity you expect from KB.

This was my first venture into the single vineyard offerings from Kosta Browne. Previously I have just had a few bottles of the 05 and 06 appellation wines. This Amber Ridge Vineyard bottling certainly shows Russian River Valley characteristics with a nice cherry, plum and cola nose. Initially the balance was a little off, tilting towards the nearly 15% alcohol but it did settle down nicely with some aeration. Flavors were fairly typical of the big California Pinot Noir style and not much different then what I experienced in the 06 Kosta Browne Russian River Valley appellation bottling. Very good, but give it a good decant to get the most out of it.

This is a big ripe wine, but it is not without at least some varietal typicity. The juice is almost opaque. It is very clean both in appearance, odor, and taste. There is a rich raspberry quality and very good underlying mineral presence here, and the acidity is well balanced against all that ripe fruit. The wine was good initially, if a bit heavy and perhaps awkward. However, it did begin to come into focus over the course of three days under refrigeration. The length was very nice, long, and complex.

Opened and decanted a little over an hour before serving. Followed over a total of 4 hours. Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Tight nose giving way to notes of dark cherries and berries with a little briar patch. Flavors of black cherries, berries, currants and some bitters on the medium finish. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full body. Drink now with an extended decant or continue to hold. Solid wine, just not a WOW wine.

Really didn't like at first -- alcohol much too prominent. Finished like a cherry flavored cosmopolitan (albeit one made with Chopin). After several hours the alcohol partly blew off and the wine became more focused and balanced with earthy, spicy, and soy sauce notes joining the prominent dark cherry fruit. Plenty of juicy acidity, finishing with a lingering impression of soy sauce. Although the wine improved with time the alcohol continued to bother me. I don't know what to think about this wine.

Brief impression from memory. Perfumed nose has red cherry, spice and earth notes. Palate is medium bodied with good zesty acidity. Served blind - the medium body and earth tones were taking me to Oregon. Good persistent palate, with lift and balance. Well done, on the elegant end of the CA Pinot spectrum. Very surprised this was KB upon reveal.

COLOR: Brilliant deep ruby
NOTE: Bought directly from the winery and though it's not necessarily an abused bottle it hasn't been stored in consistent conditions for the past year.

Palate didn’t really wow me or live up to the nose, although a wonderful wine, this KB was a little one dimensional; for the price I would stick with the estate bottling which is priced better than the single vineyard juice and you get the same RRV taste that you are looking for.
