  • sappy, masonry; strong yeasty element, "waffles"; elegant, fine bubbles, tart apple but still rounded; long lingering finish (dry and minerally). At Wine Market Party in Ebisu Park Mall Blind Tasting Bar.

  • Heidi's Crew at St Geneive Minneapolis "quarterly". CV,KB,LI,SS,CS&DD. Tonight was outstanding & so much so, the group voted to meet monthly going fwd. StG's menu tonight screamed Burgundy so that didn't hurt. My btl flighted with Candace's placid ethereal & mesmerizing '02 Dom P2. Quite a challenging flight for a new release and yet the '12 Comte rose to occasion with its signature surreal blend of, tamed energy, complex & pristine fruit, mineral and intensity. The Dom won out with its overall undeniable sense of harmony and "how do they do it" supple classiness. Elixir for the Gods & when the stars align, mere mortals like me. Lucky to be drinking a glass of both wines tonight. Especially, the '02 P2!

  • Heidi's Group: Oh My! (St. Genevieve, Mpls, MN): Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour next to the '02 Dom P2. This was the third time having the '12 including at Taittinger last Fall. This continues to be in that vibrant and fresh mode with plenty of electricity and cut. I fully expect this to evolve even further over the next few years, but it is inspiring now and hard to keep one's hands off when given the opportunity to experience it. Tons of fresh air, tart apple, Anjou pear, toast, tart, great freshness and cut, very bright, green apple peel, very invigorating. 95+(+)pts.

  • Bright yellow/gold color, abundant medium-fine bead. Aromas of apple and pear with vanilla and ginger. Palate is full and round with yellow plum, apple, spiced pear, ginger, a hint of peach, and some citrus/mineral undertones that carry into a long, vinous finish. Notes of biscuit, bread, and pineapple come with some time in the glass. Really flashy and delicious now with plenty of evidence of a long life ahead. Drink or hold.

  • This was excellent and the first few glasses made me question why I don't stock up on them. Nose is open and just chiseled enough with lemon cream, nougat, and bread wafting up. Palate has the zing to it but is not quite as stern as a DP. Really one of the best house champagnes I've had in a while. After revisiting later in the night, the sugar did show itself a bit more, perhaps a reminder of why I typically don't stock up on house bruts. That said, I would happily have 1-2 glasses anytime of this and this is much better value compared to the peer group. I do think it will continue to get better with time.

  • 2nd tasting.

Pronounced nose intensity with notes of bread, toast, yeast, white flora, pear, red apple. High acidity and balanced on palate.

  • I’m still getting lemon candy on the nose but this time it fits with the rest of the profile: pear, mineral/sea breeze thing and very subdued torrefaction (toasted bread). Good acidity all the way through, cutting through the creaminess of the mid-palate and driving to a long mineral and sweet lemon finish. Good texture and quite layered on the palate. I’m liking this.

  • Forgot to add this pre-event bottle to our formal notes from our event. Pnp'd at the table for us.

Light yellow in the glass, plenty of beautiful fine bubbles, even though it may have been served a tad warm. The nose has a gentle creamy brioche note to it with light citrus notes.

Palate shows excellent balance throughout with a very nice creamy mouth feel with a hint of vanilla and perfectly balanced acidity backing it all up. One of the best Champagnes I've had in a while.......

  • Medium pale yellow-gold with green tint and vigorous fine bubbles. Citrus, green apple, orange blossom, hazelnut, white flowers, cream, toasted brioche and lemon pie. Palate was smooth and creamy. Long finish with minerality and salinity.

A splendid Taittinger CdC BdB, very similar in style with the superb 2008. 2012 was way better than 2011 and just a little less depth than 2008. Otherwise, balanced and robust. Wine was a little sweet at the moment, which should dissipate after a few more years of cellaring. This should be a vintage to load up a few bottles for the joyous long haul.

  • No detailed TN (drank at Wako). Fine delicate mousse, slight MLF and butter, lots of orchard fruit, crisp golden apples and quince, a touch of simple syrup and yeast. Drinking quite nicely today, this will continue to age effortlessly. 93-94+

  • Flickinger Tasting at The Casino (Chicago, IL): Like Dom Perignon, I think CdC has really hit it out of the park in both 2008 and 2012. I like the creaminess here, with lovely white fruit and minerality on the back end. Almost chewy, there's so much density here. An impressive, worthwhile 2012.

  • New Years Day: Vrai Champagne, Seventh Annual Edition (Brad & Marcia's Place, St. Paul, MN): Tasting pour. Thrilled to get another shot at this after tasting at Taittinger back in September. Thi really does have it all, and for being so young, it already delivers big time. Classic in the CdC style. See my note from September for details. Just wish it would have been more :). Damn, this is gonna be just great. 95+ to 96(+)pts.

  • New Years Day Champagne Tasting (Brad's Castle): Comtes has never disappointed me, and this bottle was no exception! Great acidity keeping the stone fruit and citrus lively, but with undercurrents of fresh baked bread, oysters and caviar! Small bubbles give it an excellent mouthfeel and you can tell this will evolve nicely! Even young, a solid 95!

  • Toujours aussi bon, crémeux, assez riche, bonne tension aussi, belle classe, ça se boit tout seul. 94-95

Always so good, creamy and rich but with just enough tension and acidity, classy, fresh, deep, drinks like a charm.

  • Boxing day at Caroline's: Thought this was better than most ‘08 Comtes that I’ve tried - more freshness and elegance. A more typical Comtes in a linear fashion that I prefer.

  • Second bottle this month, this time shared by a friend for boxing day party. Similar impressions as the first one, brilliant showing, further validating the consistency of the 12 right now. Will be great with more cellaring no doubt but enjoyable already.

  • Yea I can see why my buddy bought a case of this on release and finished everything in 8 months. There’s really not much to say here; excellent bubbles, wide open, incredibly opulent and generous.

  • Very nice. Great mouthfeel, good texture, mousse was on point. Felt like I was drinking high quality chardonnay w bubbles )) Well OK I was. But I was hoping for a touch more complexity.

Compared to the 08 I had a few months ago I would say this is WAY more accessible. Bit more simple than the 08 but probably more balanced and smoother. Just didn't have intricacy of the 08 which needed more time in my opinion.

Balance was on point w the 12 which is why I even gave it 93. Finish decent. Got better with air. Certainly in a good drinking window and will remain so for years and years. Super easy to drink.

May gain a point after a bit more bottle age. Super curious to try the 13!

  • Very closed as soon as opened. Then some flowers, rum-butter. Very disappointing on the palate. Very sweet, almost not enough acidity to support that sweetness. My impression/hope is that the wine is not ready for consumption. After a tad, small berries and the minerality then ginger. Offered blind at dinner, everyone was very disappointingly surprised when revealed. Let's see its evolution. That said, too expensive at this point. The price has actually come down some, but this is a $120 value max.

  • CRiBBS @ La T (La Trompette, London): Nicely reductive nose. Some depth and richness here. A little lighter and fresher alongside the 08. Still at the crowdoleasingstageandsifnificsntly more open and giving than a bottle in the summer. ****1/2

  • Holiday Dinner - Mostly Bordeaux (Taberna del Alabardero, Washington D.C.): Expressive nose displaying generous ripe white and yellow fruit, granny smith, lemon curd, lemon, apple candy, honey, white flowers and mineral. Very good concentration, nicely layered sweet white and yellow fruit, very fine generous mousse, rich and full but also showing a good balance, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long ripe white and yellow fruit driven finish with a hint of honey at the end. This seems similar to the 06 upon release. Drinking nicely.

Easily one of the best champagne I have had, intense citrus fruits and green fruits, buttery with notes of fresh cream and some nuttiness, fresh herbs and honey started to waft from the glass after some breathing. Intense, balanced, complex, very good length, 10 years in the bottle and it's still lively, might have popped it a bit too soon, this can easily be cellared for another decade, but I doubt that anyone can wait that long, my advice, get 2 bottles, or as much as you can. Drink or hold.

  • Not an Ordinary Monday (Lorenzo's , London): Young? Yes! but really that's is secondary the wine is special nd impressive vintage in vintage out. And on this occasion did not fail us either. It was also served among a variety of other champagnes and was so nice to see it excel effortlessly with that signature elegance that comes with this wine. Lots of life ahead here but delicious now too!

  • I found this very enjoyable. It needed about 30-45 min with air to round out a little bit, but once it was there, delicious. I'm surprised (personally) to see this is 9g/L dosage, felt drier than that to me. Zesty, nutty, enjoyable.

  • A Few Champagnes from K&L Tent Tasting (San Francisco): Ripe apple aromas. A bit of sweetness upfront, but then drier through the midpalate and finish with elegant weight, lemony fruit, excellent intensity and acidity. Second time I've tried this in a few weeks, and outstanding both times.

  • Pale golden yellow, like a wheat field just before harvest. On the nose, fresh bread dough and apple skins, dried in the sun. As always with Comtes, lovely texture with pinprick bubbles and an utterly complete and refreshing finish. This is like a day at the beach - sunshine and fresh sea air. In fact you can feel it doing you good. How will it age? I have no idea but its delicious now and I am glad I've bought a few cases to follow in the years to come

  • Not a champagne guy. Wife is not a champagne gal. We have had many different producers from big houses to the grower types, and pretty much every time, they're fiiiiiiine. This was an exception. Truly good stuff. All that the notes suggest below, but I'd add that this made the perfect celebration toast for the end of the WGA strike.

  • No notes taken. By the glass. This continues to be open, offering amazing drinking pleasure with fine brioche and butter notes mixing with citrus and orchard fruit. Fresh, round with fine mousse, balanced and quite complete. Of course it will be more complex in 10 years but it is so much fun to drink today.

  • France Trip: Paris, Champagne, Burgundy; 9/3/2023-9/17/2023 (Paris, Champagne, Burgundy): Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour at La Demeure des Comte de Champagne. First experience with the '12 and so fun to get to try it here. Rich nose with brilliant fresh ocean air, pasrty cream, pear, brioche, and the signature elegance. The palate has an ultra fine mousse, pear, citrus peel, with a nice dose of almond and almond cream, toasted, so elegant and pure, demure, hints of caramel, lemon finish. Fantastic texture and so classy. Would you expect anything less. I'm impressed by how this is drinking. I'm not going to touch these for a few years. 96(+)pts.

  • Champagne Bookclub (all served blind)--Viet (La Tableau in South Coast Plaza): When this was opened it had a distinctly smoky, aromatic. Much of this aroma relaxed out of the wine as it warmed up and I was able to work some 02 into the glass, which to me was replaced with a rye seed note and maybe a light honeysuckle. Ginger, yellow apple, spicy orange marmalade. The weight was lighter before the wine evolved, kind of dumb and closed and then expanded out nicely once the air allowed it to unfold.

  • First time trying Comtes from any vintage, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Very expressive nose, leaning towards a riper/sweeter citrus, like tangerine, along with pastry dough and more. The palate starts out round and soft, with a weightless creamy texture. As it gets some air, a brisk acidity emerges. I have no experience so don't take my word for it, but this doesn't immediately strike me as having a powerful structural core for extended ageing. It is very lovely and luxurious to drink right now though.

  • Lameloise (Chagny): First look at the 2012. Light and bright, very much currently in aperitif mode with good line and light, slightly lemony fruit. Harmonious though, and with good line from attack through the mid-palate to finish with no sign of the mid-palate hole the 07 showed at a similar stage and several years subsequently. The relative weight of 12 is there sufficiently to provide a little stuffing, but still in an elegant and light frame. Promising. Try again in three or four years. **(**)

  • Taittingers Comtes blanc night (Noize, London): Big ripe Comtes, showing a bit like 2006 but with a bit more acid integration and without so much bombastic fruit. It's very easy to drink now, which is unusual for Comtes. Like many 2012s: I think this is super enjoyable now, but there's a legitimate question of how well or long the champagnes from this vintage will age.

  • 14/7 taken to Papagallo, Dakar. Wonderfully expressive nose with floral notes, stonefruit and sweet pastry. On the palate: perfect mousse, real density, perfect acidity and a very smooth, creamy texture. Very long.

  • Medium straw colored. Beautiful fresh and floral nose. On the palate young green apple, pear, stone fruit, citrus zest, fresh cut green grass and lots of flinty notes. Medium bodied with a high and refreshing acidity. Very precise acidity and structure - fantastic! Great overall depth and complexity. Beautifully balanced. Very long, seductive and fresh finish.
Super fresh and young now - but already so exciting! No need to wait any longer in my opinion. But if you prefer your bubbles with some age on it, this will be your future star. (IG)

  • No notes taken. Back in January this wine was on fire (rated 96pts), open, quite complex and precise, a bit broad but well-rounded and with enough cut. All the telltale Comtes aromas and traits, a big charmer. This bottle had all that too but was just a notch or two weaker on every metric. Is it closing down a bit? I‘m not sure, maybe it was the horrible glasses we had it in at the restaurant which didn‘t work that good. Still, a great Champagne, but probably without the sharpness and definition of the 08.

Decanting: This needs a bit of air. Gained intensity and structural integrity with a bit of air.

  • bright light yellow color, attractive nose of rich ripe apples and roasted nuts, lime and floral notes, on the palate quite open like many 2012s with a generous and ripe orchard fruit- mostly apple with a bit of pear- and some crystalline mineral notes, grapefruit, broad and expansive but with the mousse notes that come with time still very much in hiding, good length with precise and lively acids to offset the grand midpalate, this is drinking well already and with a classic Comte profile but as with the 2008 I am getting more volume and sweetness here than I am accustomed to, a wonderful wine to be sure- but not in the lighter and more beaming style of vintages I favor such as 1995 and 2002 (and the latter an even bigger and richer vintage in general than 2012), and so as with the 2008- best to try it first if you have a long history of tasting Comtes young.

  • (Disgorged in 2022, 100% Chardonnay)

  • Promising in the traditional Comtes profile. Very young but just starting to develop a hint of secondary nuance. For now, grapefruit, pear and lemon. Powerful acidity. Energetic. Comtes always takes its time coming around so this one needs a handful of years to appreciate fully. Graded conservatively.

  • Vibrant and precise, with loads of bright citrus fruit. Lots of acid and minerals, this is showing young and tightly wound at the moment, a bit mouth puckering on the finish, but quite enjoyable. I'd guess this will be even better in a few years and surely has a very long life ahead of it.

  • Vintage in , Vintage out this wine delivers and this “young” 2012 was ever as elegant and elegant as earlier vintages. Toasty, rich feel, soft almonds at time and with a lunch and balanced palate presence. Exceptional 94 as we have come to expect from this super cuvee. Lots of life ahead.

  • Rich nose with some brioche, lemons, citrus, hint of cinnamon. Palate complex lemon, yellow fruits, grapefruit touch of apricot. Minerality on the finish and fine bubbles.

Still feels young but excellent potential so one to return to in a decade or two. Opened up nicely showing more complexity and richness.

  • The 2012 Comtes pours a fantastically translucent neon yellow-green color, instantly signaling a vibrant attack of yellow citrus zest, fresh lemon juice, wet limestone, yuzu, yellow pear, and travertine. The execution is controlled but spritely, finishing with the slightest kiss of ripe yellow stone fruit. This 2012 has less overt Superman kapow power than the 2008, but similar tantalizing vibrancy that dances on the palate endlessly; the persistence is fantastic. There is youthful linearity but it is not without a beautifully structured expansion. This is going to age like a champ!

I’m having a hard time choosing which I prefer: this 2012 or the 2008. Best get both!

  • Sell the house, celebrate with bubbles. My first look at 2012 Comtes.
This is a power house right on the attack, packed with shortbread, citrus, and a hint of rosemary. Expressive and deep, is pleasurable and interesting right now but is clearly coiled for more.

  • Way too young but couldn't resist! Let it rest for 1-2 hours and it settled down and improved greatly. Beautiful nose of flowers and fruits leaning more to the tropical side, probably a nod to the warmer vintage and as a result the acid was not quite as racy as I prefer. A powerful and expansive wine with a long finish. Will try to let my remaining bottles rest for several more years as I expect this wine will improve, may have potential for 96+ score.

  • The 2012 seemed for me nearly the opposite of the 2008; inviting, gentle, with a slightly sweet impression, surprisingly ripe, very pure and with smooth bitters; let's see what the future brings.

  • Brought to a restaurant. Normally I am not a huge freak over stemware, but they had like small water glasses for wine. It made a huge difference. I like my champagne in a larger glass, not a flute, as it needs air. This threw me off for a bit. It was young as hell. Needed 1.5 for this to even start to come around. Once it started to open, white peach, a bit of sweetness on mid palate and crisp apple. Very primary. This needs 3-5 years min, hold!! Bit could be a 95+ in due time

  • This was a great bottle of Comtes. The nose displayed honeysuckle, lavender, ocean breeze and spice. The palate adds toast, lemon, lime, white peach and honeydew. The finish brings it all home with light brown sugar, almond pastry and cotton candy as well as bright, mouthwatering acidity. This does remind me of the '02 on release, like WK mentioned, but a bit more acidity. Great to drink now, but should age nicely.

  • 20th Engagea-half-aversary: PnP small glass. Very tight, searing acidity with no body. Corked up for 2 hours. Completely transformed with air. Honeysuckle and citrus on the nose with a touch of brioche. Some leesy notes. Palate is full and luscious with cream-sickle, citrus, loads of body, velvety texture and a finish that is super crisp and clean, but goes on and on. This is so young, but I'm giving it (98-100). Only knock right now is the acidity on the palate is a touch lower than desired.

  • Bright and bold with good verve; far too young for me with a bit too much kick and a bit light on the follow through. Will be quite good if not a bit warmer than other well heralded vintages.

  • First taste of the newly released vintage. I expected it to be a bit tight or locked but that’s not the case. This showed open, already quite layered, round and harmonious. We followed it over hours and it didn’t change much, always remained open, added even a bit more intensity over time. The CdC is always a charming wine, but this 2012 is definitely more open and singing than the 2008 is today or at any time since its release but it probably doesn’t possess the depth, poise and longevity the 08 has. Anyway, it’s still a buy.

TN: Open and inviting, typical Comtes aroma profile on the nose and palate with caramel, toast and brioche wrapped around citrus and apple fruit with a minerality backbone. The acidity cuts nicely through the richness of the style but not to the level the 2008 does. This seems a softer, rounder, more harmonious edition. All in all, a great, crowd-pleasing Champagne.

Decanting: Open from the go, this bottle didn’t need any decanting.

  • Lovely to be able to try this now as I have some bottles pending that can go straight to the cellar when they arrive (this was a duty free airport purchase for some indulgent hotel consumption).
Started out too tight and too cold, but over time this relaxed and the mousse calmed down and the lovely layers of flavors came through. Although the 2012 vintage is being touted as more accessible, so far I think it deserves a little time to settle down. But it will be a great vintage, at least for my palate

  • PnP.

  • Just realized, this is my 8000th tasting note on CT, how time flies. The recently released 2012 Taittinger CdC seems a worthy wine for this. TN: Youthful nose with predominantly lemon peel aromas and a touch of candied sugar. Autolytic and tertiary notes still very much in the background, quite a bit of dosage at the finish, hope this will become less prominent. Generous palate like all 2012s with the freshness of a BdB. I just had the stellar 2008 last night at a tasting and it was much more expressive and ready. I would definitely cellar this 2012 for at least another 5-10 years and it may then add a point with bottle age. 95-96
