Similar notes to last time. Gold with prominent legs and glycerol to look at. The nose has fennel, runny honey and a perfume which makes it enticing. The palate has power and intensity with vegetal flavours of fennel, almond, and bit of sweetness too with ripe apricot, honey, lemon, lime and grapefruit. It needs a decant but it opens with time. A great wine but a style I don’t like too much.

At CKH with Xtremos. Wow! This wine has aged nicely, with gold color, plenty of fresh orchard fruits, and no evidence of maderization in the taste profile. Big body. Long finish. Wish I had more. :(

Drank with appetisers at Tony’s with M. This bottle was in beautiful shape. Vibrant golden color. Lovely nose, prominent lanolin and peach and tropical fruit notes, with a very long finish. Came back to the last of the bottle towards the end of the meal and was even better.

This one came just after a Beaucastel VV 2009 white. Recent release ex Chateau.
Whilst this Oree is showing its age, it didn't suffer for oxidation as some have experienced. Had this wine once before, it left a lasting impression then and it has rekindled my love for Ermitage.
Stunning ... easily 96 point, in its youth would have scored higher. Did benefit from some time in the glass and slightly higher temperature.
No need to hold, drink up !

A very cloying nose, and rich, alcoholic palate impression on the first evening, but much more delineation and charm on the next few nights. Still not really my thing, and of course a wine for certain foods (which we didn't have). Fun to try.

Gold in color, almost like a desert wine. Fantastic nose, very floral and clean. Slightly oxidized notes and a tad of bitterness at finish. Pretty good.

This had a nose of sweet cream, nuts, lots of oak, broad, rich, weighty, apricot pit; very low acid, slight bitter finish, tons of character. However at the end of the day if played too much like a big broad oaky Napa Chardonnay to me. At Tesse paired with Hamachi, charred cauliflower, brochette, Branzino, caccia e pepe truffle linguine, very good meal. 91-92 Try again on its own without a cocktail prior!

Gold with prominent legs and glycerol to look at. The nose has fennel, herbs, honey and a perfume which makes it enticing. The palate has power and intensity with vegetal flavours of fennel and other root veg, rosemary and dried herbs, honey, lemon, lime, grapefruit, apricot and tannins which are unmistakable, they fur your teeth! Really quite an extraordinary and distinctive wine. As the person who drunk this with said if you tasted this literally blind you could mistake it for a red wine.

2017 Heritage Blind Wine Challenge (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. The nose is much, much better than the palate. Clearly quite exotic, with some interesting sweeter elements, but you can basically smell right away how cloying the palate is going to be. And yes, it is. Simultaneously mouth-drying and greasy, this is a classic example of why I dislike Rhone whites. I guessed this was the 1998 Beaucastel VV.
Color more young & pale than old & gold. Apples on the nose. Seamless pears & apples on the palate, perhaps a bit closed. Wonderfully persistent finish with a nutty, almond note kicking in. Really fine. Good now, better down the road. Drink or hold.
Served with swordfish steaks pan seared in olive oil, bok choy, and one of those grocery store polenta tubes, sliced & deep fried. White pepper & Salish alder-smoked salt for seasonings.

Golden yellow; flinty wet stone nose; very creamy attack, well-balanced, rounded and tasty; long lingering honey aftertaste; slight slight hint of oxidative nature underpinning its Northern Rhone features; very good

Dreamtasting #3 (Bernhard Eifel Restaurant, Trittenheim): (*, open label) Marzipan, yellow flowers (buttercups? daisies?), camphor, apricots, blonde tabacco. Whirling complexity and frightfully deep and broad. Very youth- and forceful. Titanic wine! Let it sleep in your cellar for 10 years. 18.5/20

Yellow fruits and minerals in the bouquet. Complex and exclusive. Also yellow fruits on the palate and perfect freshness and bitterness. Full bodied, concentrated and a truly great wine. Still in the open phase and beautiful complexity.

EWG: Decadence (Conrad Green's Abode): This was not very expressive to start with and tightened up in the glass even harder. Nose of waxy banana. Fat and round palate with more wax character and a flat expression. I'm not a huge Rhone white guy but this must have a better future ahead of it. Leave it sleep.

Saturday night in the O.C. (Chez GlennK): I am now 0 for 3 with white Rhones, and beginning to think I am just not a fan of this style. Gkapoor raved about the "spices, cloves, and white fruit" but all I found were grass, broccoli, roasted nuts, a bit of white flower and nougat. On the palate, I found this to be pure and fresh, if watery, with no hint of the 14% alcohol. Not rated.

Leo's Blind Tasting Group - Sept '10 edition (Txikito, NY): Striking aromatics; very exotic and high-toned with all sorts of wild herbal, minty, floral and spicy scents accenting pale white fruited flavours. It doesn't have anywhere near the same depth or complexity in the mouth, showing ripe pear and yellow plum flavours with some herbal accents and a nice sense of freshness, tasty but not living up to the promise of the aromatic profile. Quite surprised when this was unveiled, as I preferred both the Leroy Aligoté and the Cotat to this.
(at Wine-Depot's Chapoutier tasting event) wonderful rich aroma, a real pleasure, however a bit flat in its mineral taste taste. Expected more from this wine.

Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of talc, acacia flowers, paraffin and yellow pears. Flavors of waxy yellow pears and white apricot. Light to medium acidity, medium body. Drink or hold but I'd lean to holding for the short term to see how it fleshes out with a little more time in bottle.

This is the highest score I have ever awarded a wine, and surprisingly it went to a white (but what a white!) Dark gold with greenish hues. Nuts, rhubarbe, honey, orange jam, pergamond, apricot and minerality on the nose. A textbook in complexity. Full-bodied, creamy, with huge fruit, tanins (yes, it's true), balancing acidity and an almost endless finish that you wish it will stay forever in your mouth. A tour de force. Not far from being as good as a white wine can be. Chapoutier masterclass during the Decanter Fine Wine Encounter, The Landmark, London.

Tasting his 2006's with Michel Chapoutier, November 21, 2009: Nose is packed with minerals, granit, hazelnut, gets more and more intensive as it breathes. Beautiful bitterness and a lot of minerality in the palate, the finish goes on forever

Polished golden colour. Intense attack on the nose, rich spicy oak, buttered toast, honey and marzipan. Powerful yet balanced. Round and soft on the palate, fat buttery fruits, toast, vanilla and brioche. Lovely balance with the youthful crisp acidity. Long finish.

Decanter's Chapoutier 2006 Masterclass, given by the man himshelf. Ok still very young with lots of minerality and the characteristic marsanne bitterness. Pale golden and closed mostly on the nose. Needs 2yrs at least
Point to note is that he confirmed the notion that most of the white hermitage (and his especially) seem to close down around year 7 and open again in yr 15 or so. Keep this in mind and good luck..
