Deg. 02/16. Sadly, this bottle was corked. The nose was completely dead but on the palate there was so much intensity, so many layers of wonderfully balanced aromas, lots of tension that it overshadowed the TCA completely. I’m usually not in to the-more-vinous-the-better camp but this combined that celebral appeal and vinous complexity of great grower Champagnes with lots hedonistic pleasure and especially charm I often miss. A perfect combo. Despite the cork we almost emptied the bottle. This would have been easily a 96/97pts without the TCA.
TN: At first slightly, with time full-blown TCA aromas on the nose. On the palate there is so much complexity with layers and layers of aromas from caramel, toffee, to minerality in all shapes, dark berries and fresher zesty, lemony fruit. All delivered in UHD. Towards the finish some TCA comes forward and taints it. The wine is structured, yet ultra fine, highly elegant and balanced with a high freshness and very fine mousse. A masterpiece.
Decanting: Open and ready from the go, no decanting needed.

2012 base vintage, disgorged 2016. I was really looking forward to this, unfortunately a little corked. The TCA was more apparent in the nose, but then on the palate, the wine was still largely intact and would hint at its greatness. Just for the record, the bottle was almost empty at the end of the evening (and we had plenty of alternatives). So flawed, but not totally undrinkable, even for someone who is sensitive to TCA like I am.

Rieslingfan visits Albany; 1/26/2024-1/27/2024 (Châteauneuf-du-Salil, Albany): Lot 12, disgorged Feb 2016. A deep coppery-pink color, and a wow wine from the first sip to the last. A savoury, incredibly brioche-y and toasty nose with a little oxidation, and bright citrus and strawberry fruit beneath. The balance and depth here are incredible, and this is a joy to drink over a few hours.

Champagne Tasting $120+ (Bin 75 Alpharetta, GA): More golden color, definitely darker than the Boloree; golden apple, apricot, honeyed and rich nose, such weight and savoriness on the mid palate, a little natty in the way of some pickled apples but just an accent of interest, oxidative quality that seems to detract from some producers but this is great, weight and fullness from front to the finish; very good; interesting and makes me hungry for Asian food but I know it would work with so many things.

Complex and slightly funky nose. Spice notes, fresh apple, ginger, and mushroom - a fantastic Maillons in its prime. The bubbles are fading a bit here so could be time to drink up if this bottle is representative.

Lots of red berries on the nose, bready yeast, Slightly and pleasantly oxidative. Soft on the palate, very fine mousse, a nice chalkiness on the finish. Complex, lovely texture. This is very distinctive and enjoyable but something tells me this bottle isn’t quite firing. There was a worrying cork smell at first, which blew off but there’s something just a bit pinched about it. I have a couple more bottles so will reserve judgement.

Disgorged February 2016. This presents as an older wine with a medium butterscotch color. Nose of oxidized butter, something floral. Palate is moderately developed with medium richness. Finishes with gentle fresh acidity which invites another sip. I actually preferred how this showed during the first 30 minutes versus a few hours after opening. If this is representative, it's totally in the pocket for my preferences (if not slightly past) and I'll accelerate my pace.

50th Birthday Tasting (Vesterbro): Tiny red berry fruit mixed with green apple and lemons. Vibrant and mineralic acidity balances the wine very nicely. Great wine and at a very drinkable plateau right now but it does however still feels very young and could easily age for a long time. Loved it!

Late Birthday BYO: Blind. God modning på frukten, stor kropp, men en neste-kledelig nitterhet i finish. Noe fennikel, denne fyller ut hele munnhulen og har flott lengde. Lav dosage. En balansert og generøs champagne. Mener å huske at dette var 2012 base.

Mouth with a magnificent touch, it is delicate but the wine imposes its presence naturally. The juice is full of life and appears in full maturity with a delicious complexity that the structure of the wine delivers by layer: black fruits, brioche then spicy. The wine ends with a very nice finish, long and salty at the same time.
Excellent, as often with Ulysse Collin, we could just blame it for a lack of breadth.

Continuing the night's theme of off bottles, this was crazy dark in color (resembling Bourbon) and tasted like a 20 year old over-the-hill Champagne. There were bubbles and it wasn't dead -- in fact was rather enjoyable to drink, but there's no way this was Olivier's intention. I assume either heat damage or a bad closure occurred here.

Great Champagne. Initially muted nose. After 30 Minutes, beautiful hints of citrus, apple, caramel and brioche. On the palate, very fine and delicious bubbles. Long lasting , salty, mineral driven with good acidity structure. However the wine seems to be quite mature. Great producer! Love this

i am drinking these too fast. not a rose, but i note that with age (say around 5 years post disgorgement), these UC Maillons gain a light salmonish hue - have seen this across a few vintages.
on to the wine - this was somewhat muted upon opening and i suspected that it was corked or otherwise compromised. but it blew off after a few hours and it gave me red apples, slight honey and some almonds.
Good, but for mw, the weakest showing of this specific bottling - and i've consumed 7 over the years.

2012 base. 2016 disgorgement. Revisiting this champagne after holding off for 18 months since last bottle. This is becoming more and more a mini-selosse. Nose, although still young and discreet, has a nice spicyness and sweet acacia honey tones as well as a slight cheesy note. The Selosse influence is most obvious on the palate. Wine has almost perfect balance. My only complaint would be that I'm missing a little volume in the wine. Easy 93+ points.

Ulysse Collin Les Maillons. 2012 base. Litt "tung" på duft med røde modne epler, honning og Kongen av Danmark drops. Tydelig høy modning i frukten her. Til å være 2012 og en ren pinot, hadde jeg kanskje noe større forventninger. Moussen derimot leverer en ypperlig munnfølelse. Høy konsentrasjon - skikkelig power. Nydelig syre her som hamler opp med den modne frukten. Ingen tvil om at produsenten liker å plukke sent. Kraften holder seg godt gjennom smakskurven. Disgorged 2014, lot 10-1. Thought this was a 2012 vintage but likely 2010. Pours a lovely copper-gold, slightly oxidized with flavors of marzipan, strawberry and orange rind. Probably better a year or two ago but still quite dynamic now.

Tasted blind. Didnt recognize it even though I've had this precise bottle twice before. First thought was Selosse, maybe Cote Faron, then I guessed Roses de Jeanne or Charles Dufour. Felt like a weak vintage, maybe 2011. Quite advanced, could be older than 2011, or maybe just the style. Medium high acidity or maybe just bone dry. One of the best champagnes today along with Marguet Les Bermonts 2013.

Volnay night starter champ at P90. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, rose gold colour. Thin legs. Fine bubbles. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of chalk, limestone minerality, citrus lemon, green lime, green apples, toasty brioche. Developing. On the palate, dry, vibrant high acidity, medium- alcohol (12.5%), medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red apples, green apples/pear, citrus lemon-lime, chalky limestone minerality, sweet cream. Refreshing clean long finish despite the vinosity. Very good quality. I like this style of Blanc de Noir. Upside potential is good. 2012 base vintage. Disgorged 18/02/2016.

Coppery color with red apple, wild strawberry, and orange blossom brightness up front, but with some underlying notes of well-done pastry crust and a streak of chalk throughout. Still tart and fresh but with a broad and lactic mid-palate. Lots of upside here.

Wow - stunning wine that's drinking incredibly well already! My first Ulysse Collin - had to see what all the fuss was about. Very unique nose and palate - so different style of champagne - different like Selosse's wine are, but a style of his own. No acacia honey here, much more perfumed and sweet fruit, yet refreshingly fresh and dry.

Delicious, spicy, full-bodied, with beautiful color in the glass. Oak is so much better integrated than in earlier vintages. As time goes on I think I am preferring Maillons to the BdBs -- quel sacrilège! -- perhaps because it's more approachable in youth whereas the BdBs are made in a more backward style that demands aging.

2nd time having this wise - last time was when in 2016 shortly after disgorgement. Not a rose, but with a curious orangish/pinkish hue, as last time (and also with the 2006 version). Strawberries and orange, cream and minerality. Excellent acid and finish.

Pretty deep color with a pink/orange tone. Beautiful but restrained notes of tonic, orange zest, small red strawberries, white pepper, cold steel and also some sweet spices like vanilla and some autolytic notes too. It's medium-full bodied, with small and not too many bubbles but a slightly creamy texture. High acidity cutting through everything. Excellent finish full of tension. Another excellent showing of this great Blanc de Noirs. Love the combination of richness and mineral/acidic cut here.

Red apple skin, ginger spice, very dry with great acid. Not as heavy as previous years, I find this vintage much more balanced and successful for Maillons. On day 2 even more integrated and balanced, if a touch less generous. Overall, a super vintage for Maillons that needs a few years to unwind.

Medium golden color with an almost pink shine to it. Expressive notes of tonic, flowers, honey, nuts, also some small red berries, minerality and a touch of oxidative notes too. Really a unique and delicious champagne showing just a bit of color due to just a bit of maceration with the skins. Very dry with great freshness and verve and quite clean with lovely subtle tropical fruit flavors. Finishes with excellent intensity and complexity but they key to this juice is its balance and "natural" feeling. I liked it very much.

Clearly a Blanc des Noires, almost rosé colored with red fruit aromas next to solid minerality. Alltogether a VERY good champagne! Disgorgement date 18 Feb 2016, 2012 vintage

Again lovely, red berries, bread crust, crispy acidity, elegant. Needs a few more years. 92

Wonderful, rich champagne with a touch of red fruit and a hint of sherry. If you like Krug, you’ll probably like this.

Dinner with the wine group (Aicha, San Francisco): High intensity aromatics, ripe apples, apple skin; palate is medium-bodied, rich, but still has fresh vibrant acidity; medium-plus finish. Really nice, but more oxidative than my last taste. 93

Delicious. Elegant, balanced, pretty red fruits. Wonderful saline quality. Great with Chinese meat dishes. Imagine this would be stellar with squab etc.

Lovely Champagne, red fruit, great minerality and complexity. This drinks so well. Very rich, in the finish a bit short. For me not a problem because this is such an attractive bubble.

Medium golden color with a hint of pink/orange. Fascinating aromatics of tonic, steely minerality, small red berries, white pepper, also some orange peel, honey and nuts. It's medium-full bodied, has pretty high acidity cutting through the richness and creaminess. Not too many but fine creamy bubbles. Long finish with plenty of tension. Super impressive and fascinating as always.

Consistent with my last note. Amber hue, showing some apple and orange blossom tones, this time leaning more towards apple than citrus. Fine mouse; lean with good palate presence and a clean, firm profile. Meh..

It's medium-full bodied with almost bracing acidity providing lots of tension. Medium sized but only few bubbles, leaves a vinous mouthfeel. Excellent length. An insanely beautiful Blanc de Noirs that combines richness with incredible tension. (94+)

TT(W)TG (brief notes, blind wines) (Enfield): Medium yellow/orange color. Rich citrus (especially orange) on the nose, with some more advanced notes. Pretty, expansive, creamy on the palate with some bitter orang and spice. Nice acidity; quite dry. Enjoyable, but better Champagnes for my palate exist at this price.

Slight amber hue to this with a very lively mouse. Attractive, sharp creamy orange blossom, citrus fruit, and distant floral tones with bracing acids and some exotic backend spice. Bone dry. This was nice but didn’t seem to live up to the hype, for me.

Excellent. Medium yellow color that suggests it's a bit advanced but palate and nose are fresh, characterful, and dry. Lovely rich fruit and depth. Very good now but with years ahead to develop. (Feb 2016 disgorgement)

GMs South Side: Disgorged 02/16. Golden, orange tinged colour. Roses, orange rind, pear, some nutty notes and a line of spice across the nose and palate. Strong acid core, with good depth of flavour. Long and interesting. Will try to hold my other bottle for 4-5 years.
