Just a splendid long-tailed cab. Lots still going on on the nose and tongue. Fading at the edges so wouldn't leave it too long. For years thought that this was the most overhyped wine ever (sorry, I know that's not true even as a write it). Later releases were tasted and quickly forgotten and this was the last of the modestly priced vintages - after this year the price tripled as I recall.

Amazing that at one time 13.5% Cabernet Sauvignon seemed so uncommon! The 99 Don Melchor shows a bell pepper, leather, and ripe plum profile, augmented on the palate by something vaguely savory, almost prosciutto like. This is relatively well balanced, though there’s some heat on the palate. Pleasant enough EC 91, but perhaps best for consumption in the near term.

Garnet coloured; admirable complexity on the nose - good intensity of dates & prune - tinged fruits, leather, spice, soy, mint. Very inviting; rich and delicious on the palate, tannins very fine. A lovely mint background to the flavors here which follow a similar trajectory to the nose. Longer, balanced and satisfying. Exceptional.

From magnum this time. Leakage from the cork. Dark garnet with brick hues. Expressive nose with obvious evolution. Cedar, liquorice, dark cherries, leather and undergrowth. Medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced with mature but by no means macerated fruit, soft tannins and medium acidity. Long aftertaste. Drinks prefectly right now. On par with a second or third growth bdx left banker.

Dark garnet. Very Medoc-like nose with intense cedar, leather, noble barnyard scents, cherry, cassis, liquorice and sweet spice. Medium-bodied with soft tannins, vibrant fruit and balancing acidity. Long aftertaste. At peak but will continue drinking nicely for several more years. The best Don Melchor I've had to date. Excellent!

13.5% alcohol. Bright red color. No hints of bricking. Somewhat funky nose for most of the night, with a funky, earthy, stinky edge to the wine. But underneath? It's beautiful. A textural, smooth, balanced wine with wonderful black fruit that has a very light minty edge and terrific earthy, cigar-box complexity. Good acidity and back-end tannin. This is close-knit and tasty. A lovely wine. The bouquet did blow off over several hours, and it showed a bit more mint and chocolate with the black fruit. Overall, a really lovely wine. A-

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted double blind. Most identified this as New World Cabernet, but Other than an intriguing mint note, I didn't find a lot to enjoy here. It seemed much older with a musty, almost moldy character. There was some odd problem here, either Brett or heat damage, so lost interest quickly.

Color turning a bit rusty, tannins are completely smoothed out, a bit less tar and cedar than normal for these wines. That said, the wine was really easy drinking and had a long pleasant finish but likely to start fading from here.

If I start by admiting that i'm not a single variety enthousiast ,I must admit that amongst many european ,autralian, south african and other countries of origin single variety cabernet sauvignons , I was very pleased by this wine. Its structure/ balance (tanins vs acidty vs extraction vs taste,vs lenght and complexity) surprised me greatly . Its dark fruit and torrefaction introduction , slight leftover eucalyptus/menthol and leathery finish without leaving behind the fruity lenght was more than a good match for a Venison meatloaf that included oyster mushrooms migneron cheese (origin from quebec semi hard hand washed ripened ) a litle mariande and dijon mustard . I know you must be thinking (what!!!) meatloaf so raw and lacking delicacy but be reassured the venison and the mushrooms make you forget from the first bite the simplicity of the dish. Now Back to the wine ; presenting at first nose the very sought after efect/impression of having a well extracted less than dull complex wine and it incites you to discover at every sip something new according to itd evolution if you drink a magnum over a period more than 2hours . to finish , this is my first review/comment knowing very well that it is far from being organoleptic but as i first said it is a wine to taste and enjoy mostly due to cost/quality ratio.
Unequivocally the best wine of the night. Balanced, harmonious, complex, without edges. Chileans consider this your great wine and are proud of it. The American press (Wine Spectator and Robert Parker) has reported its recognition on it. However, is drinking a Don Melchor aged for 13 years, to realize that it is on another level. Your standard of comparison should be great wines of the old world and California. There is no competition in Chile for Don Melchor

At Ray's The Steaks, Arlington VA. Brian brought this from his stash, thinking its evolution may have been advanced given it had not been in proper cellar storage for the last six or seven years. However it turned out to be in perfect shape. Aerate to decanter, color showed no obvious signs of age, with dark garnet hues, medium full body, clear, minimal sediment. Bouquet of coffee and herbs intermixed with cassis and black currants. On the palate, ripe cassis, red cherries and tomato amid layers of earth, coffee, leather, and some brightening minerals. Excellent balance, acidity is medium-plus, still intact. Medium-plus tannins are largely integrated with some velvety softness, and a medium length finish that included cherries, black currant, coffee, and earth. Depth and profile went very well with the steak Bertolucci, which included roasted bone marrow. This is drinking perfectly right now, and may be starting a graceful descent - drink 'em if you got em. Cost was low 40's when this was purchased, which was an excellent value.

Deep garnet color fading to a narrow tawny rim. Nose of medium intensity quite typical of the variety. Quite earthy in style with mocha and chocolate notes rather than cedar or cigar box which one can find in Bordeaux. Oak influence is still evident with a slight but fresh vanilla note adding a lift to the nose along with some herbal and herbaceouss nuances. Palate is quite full but very well balanced with acidity being high despite ripeness of fruit. Flavourful with ripe and resolved tannins it is complex with coffee, chocolate, and licorice, blackcurrant fruit, dark cherries and notes of leather. Length is good and chocolatey. Definitely very well made wine but aromatics on the dark fruit and earthy side fail to impress me as much as a Bordeaux wine of comparable quality. Can keep but I don't think it will get better than it is now.

Decanted for two hours and paired with roast beef. Dark ruby. Bouquet mainly by berries, following by tobacco, coffee and oak. On the palette, sweet cherries, nice body and remarkable integrated and soft tannins. An excellent win at its peak. Drink now, and enjoy ever younger vintages.

By far the best Don Melchor I have drunk in the past 5 years. Reinforces my belief that these wines need at least 10 years to hit their drinking window. The smoky tar flavor is less prevalent than in younger Don Melchors and the fruit is delicious with a long elegant finish.

The wine is drinking great with a few more years to the zenith bottle. Had bought a case of these when just starting the affair with this mistress my wife grows increasingly jealous of - more from the expense spent than the constant company kept. This was bottle ten. Each has been a pleasure with the the tannins getting softer and fruits more sublime as the wine matured. Popped the bottle at our favorite BYOB, and the wine showed an amazing breadth of food pairings including a charcuterie of cheeses and Italian sliced hams, sauteed butternut squash with a whipped cheese toping, Kobe cheese slider, lamb ragout, pheasant stuffed with duck confit, and braised short rib with a side of veal medallion. The wine kept pace with the food. Dark berries, aged leather and long finish with a hint of the mountainside terrior. Will save the next two bottles for special meals.

Lots of licquorice and a bit of mint on the nose. A developed 'bordeaux feel'on the nose but it retains a chilean identity. It's not Chateau Latour but it's hard to think of a decent claret with this maturity for less than £60. it has new world fruit with a kind of old world balance. A much better choice for a decent steak than bordeaux competitors. (That last comment is unfair as it implies that all new-world bordeaux blends are somehow bordeaux imitations. This is so much more than that.)

From 375. Mild bricking on the edges with mature coloring. Expansive nose of cherry, leather, cigar box and pepper. Palate with fine chewy tannin in the background. Smooth delicate palate, with some cherries and cassis, but is otherwise dominated with mature notes of saddle leather, smoke, pipe tobacco leading into a lengthy finish of mocha, scorched earth with some red fruit highlights. I think this is at or just past peak, well structured and balanced, but I don't see it gain too much in complexity. Wonderfully accessible now not sure if mine was more mature than other due to the 375ml bottling.

No Formal TN and from a 375 ml. This wine was strong with the tar and loam that is synonymous with Chile. The palate was much lighter and more nuanced that previous vintages I have had but noticeably lacking fruit becoming a veggie bomb.

Rubi escuro, pequeno halo aquoso. Excelente.

Popped and poured yesterday - disjointed and green. However, the fundamental characteristics of a terrific cab were there.
Day 2 - an entirely different animal. Blood red. Nose of graham crackers and eucalyptus. Black cherries on the front end, with undeniable coffee nuances on the midpalate. Leather and earthy characteristics are also present. Rich black pepper and dusty tannins round out the palate, with a mouthcoating finish bursting with spice. Medium-bodied. Outstanding cab that has certainly entered its peak; but I believe this can withstand significant time in the cellar. Fabulous.

Dark purple color. It has a marvellous intense nose of cranberry sauce with hints of mint and chocolate. Full-bodied yet in good balance it reminds me of the chocolate mints ", After Eight", with its chocolaty and minty flavors. Not intellecual, but very delicious. Drunk over a period of 3 days without any signs of development or decay. Rating: 92+

Drank over two nights. Deep dark purple wonderful nose that jumped out of the bottle. First night I was disapointed as this wine only rated about 86pts. It just seemed out of wack, lacking in body. Tonight is a different story. Very smooth wine that has come together, nice long finish (30 seconds). Dark fruit , tannins were present but not overwhelming. I think this wine could still use more time in the bottle.

Nice Cabernet aromas, but a tad green. Very full and quite fruit forward in the mouth. Still good tannnins, but settling enough to let the fruit show through a bit with a taste that reminds me of aging left-bank Bordeaux. Will be interesting to see how this evolves.

Tried at a Concha y Toro tasting. This is a step up in price and quality. It sells for $33 and is made from a special selection of the ripest grapes fro the Puente Alto vineyard. 93% Cab Sauvignon and 7% Cab Franc. Rounder than the previous wine but with a similar flavor profile. Firm tannins indicate some aging potential for this wine. 91+ points.

very dark and inky and extracted rich floral and sweet WS 92 in 2002. Delicious. New world fruit with old world balance.

Very approachable wine now, very smooth and mature, with great length, and very supple and mature. Soft tannins. Very good quality fruit. Very polish and round.

Fabulous.

Outstanding from start to finish. Lush color and nose, lots of complexity and a very smooth finish. Priced above my everyday use, but would present well for special occasions.

Rating: 92+

Blind tasted by the group and called Bordeaux from a ripe year. Lush cassis, iron, sage, anise, with firm tannins. Minimal loam and a youthful wine. Early peak but will last 5 years at least.

Excelente.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #009; Bordeaux blends worldwide. (By me): Soft, very well balanced, a lot of sweet, but in perfect harmony with the wine. Very refined wine with soft black currants. I love this wine!

91+ points.

Cassis, herb, pepper, earth, and toast nose. Full and rich with a velvety extract and ripe tannins; long finishing.
