Gang of 4 Sweet Lake Farewell tasting (@ RW): Beautiful and expressive bouquet with garrigue, red and dark berries, some sweet licorice root and sweet chocolate. Very tempting nose. Same on the palate, licorice, ripe tannin and good acidity, a bit meaty, cherry bonbon and cedar. Elegant wine with a good length.

Not as good as a year before. Color and nose fine but on the palate not as strong and powerful than 12 months before - a bit fragile. Still very good but I would not wait any longer…

This is consistently fine C9P. Quite a lot of sediment. The fruit has almost gone now. With 15 % ABV that is now very present, the character has changed a bit (too hot).

A textbook C9P. Wonderful dark red color. Very ripe nose of a powerful wine, dark berries, some chocolate, wonderful sweetness. Mouthfilling, dominant on the palate, smooth and silky. Nice round and sweet finish. I think it’s in peak drinking window. Some years left.

Medium garnet in color, not clear, some sediment mixed in. This is definitely not filtered. Spiked cherries on the nose, like Luxardo cherries with some burbon on them. Garrigue and cassis on the nose. You can feel the alcohol. You can feel it on the palate too. A bit spicy. Some kirsch. Feels ripe but not over-ripe. It's just a big wine. Acidity is medium plus, tannins are resolved, mouthfeel is velvety. A bit of herbs and garrigue on the palate. It's not totally balanced. There's some heat on the finish. It's just a powerful wine. I'd love to have this in the middle of winter, while skiing.

Bought two of these on release eight years ago. I wanted to find something different to go with Thanksgiving dinner and decided on this. Great choice I believe, as this was a great pairing, that didn't overpower the bird or the sides. Cherries, some spices and light chocolate on the nose. The taste was subtle cherries, strawberries and a hint of black currant. Delicious and strong finish to complete the mouthfeel. One of the best CDPs I;ve had in a while.

Weekly tasting group RWP #277; Northern vs Southern Rhone (@ My place): Expressive bouquet with still a lot of cherries, chocolate and good garrigue. This delicious CNdP has aged minimally in the last six years. Decanted. Clear, medium (+) ruby with some garnet on the rim. Thick, viscous dark legs. The nose is clean, with medium (+) aromas of red fruit, black fruit and dried herbs. The palate is dry but fruit-laden. The oak is unobtrusive. Medium to medium (+) plus acidity, tannins and alcohol (then label actually says 15%), with everything very well integrated. Full bodied, with medium plus flavor intensity and great length on the finish. It is probably at - or close to - its peak, but with at least another five years and probably more to go.

This is a heavyweight, but one with style and grace, more Ali than Tyson. It's delicious, in a take-no-prisoners Chateauneuf way, and surprisingly refreshing with good acidic backbone. Even more surpising, when I checked the label it showed 15%, but that is certainly well concealed. vg

Cloudy ruby in color with slight bricking at the edges, this wine reveals garrigue, raspberry, cherry cough syrup and spices on the nose. The mouth feel is medium bodied with soft, inviting tannins, minerals, white flowers and hints of iron. The finish is perfectly balanced as the fruits, minerals, acidity and softening tannins are beautifully integrated.
Purchased for $40US, this wine is drinking ideally now and still has 5-10 more years of life.

Dark inky color. Dense. There is a richness here, but it is well balanced by the verve and acidity. Blueberry gives way to darker fruits. Fig newton, pepper and a touch of sweet baking spice. Enjoyable today. Nice and smooth on the palate. It may benefit from a few more years in the cellar, but it is in a perfectly good spot today.

Somewhat closed on the nose, with some dark fruits, meat, raw minced beef, something musty and moldy and something reminding me of cray fish. Medium(-) acidity, distinct tannins, medium intensity and a medium finish. Warm alcohol, but this is still on the leaner side for a 2007.

Served this with lamb and potato gratinee, alongside St Preferts Cuvee Classique 2007. Very interesting comparison, certainly given the discussion going on about the theory that Barroches wines don't age well. Turns out that Barroche is the wine that could use more cellaring while the St Prefert is wide open. A lot of the classical Barroche notes are there; strawberry jam mixed with a touch of figs, very good acidity, nice garrigue going towards licorice and very ripe tannins that give a good grip. It's fine today, but I'm confident it will be even better in a year or three. Fruit, tannins and acidity are all there. 91-92 with a + for potential.

This is my first of 5 bottles. Tannins present but not gripping. Allowed to sit open for 5 hours prior to drinking. Savory dark fruits on nose and in mouth. A hint of sweetness. Had with steak and some chocolate. Worked well with both but would have been fine with lighter fare as well. Planned to drink every other year until 2022. Will monitor with each bottle. Not convinced that it will last that long.

Chateauneuf du Pape 2007 (Petroleum Club, Calgary): Intense nose of black fruit and graphite. Terrifically forward fruit and it's long. There is a green note and firm tannin to it. All told, this is very attractive.

This seems to be pretty closed right now, much more open a couple of years ago on purchase. The tannins are still dry and prominent on the finish, my recommendation would be to sit on this and wait for those to integrate. I know from experience that there is great potential here.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #083; Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2005 vs 2007 (By AH): Compared to my previous notes this was a disappointing bottle. The bouquet is alcoholic with dark cherry liquor chocolates. On the palate overripe fruits like cherries and plums. The balance between acidity and sweetness is ok, the tannin as well, but the alcohol is playing a major role. Not sure if it is the bottle or the stage of development. I have a few, so I hope it will improve again for the better. Tonight I scored it just 88-89

Consumed over 2 days, note from day 2. Nose: Medium expressiveness, lavender, rust, earth, brush, stems, and spice. Palate: Medium bodied, showing black olive, venison, and tart dark fruit, good mid-palate density, nice acidic kick, back-end comes together quite nicely - taming the rustic beast that this is. There is a lot going on here, some works for me and some does not, but the overall this is an interesting and complex wine.

Weekly tasting group #068; A fully blind test. (@ AH): Dark purple red. Beautiful and intense bouquet with dark fruits, sweet spices, herbs, laurel, oak and some glue due to the high concentration. On the palate the same. Some vanilla, white pepper and sweetness as well. Also a good amount of pleasant acidity and creamy tannin. Unlike some other 2007 C9duP's which are getting locked now, this wine is still open for business. And with a future until probably at least 2020. 92+

More of an elegant style, but well balanced and very classic CdP. If it was in the 20's it would be a must buy, but at around 40 the market is fairly competitive for this quality.

Nose of strawberries, red and black sweet cherries, dried herbs and with more time in the glass the nose became a little more rustique. The palate was filled with dark sweet fruit, some dry extract and provencal herbs. A decidedly powerful wine. This wine is still on the young side of it's life and can, i imagine, still be cellared for many years.

Popped and poured, consumed over 3 hours. Nose: Medium plus expressiveness, red licorice, lavender, and smoke. Palate: Medium full bodied, sweet red fruit and spice attack transitions beautifully thru the mid-palate where a nice acidic kick balances out the sweetness, laser focus with no harshness. Finish: Medium length dominated by spicy dark red fruit. Very delicious from nose to finish.

Was not as impressive as I hoped it would be. A little too hot and fruit forward. Could have fooled me for a decent CdR rather than a decent CdP. Perhaps the wine needs more time to integrate?

Decanted for app. 1 houer. Very dark purple colour. Heavy dense and thick. A good mixture of liquorice and ripened black berries, black cherries, figner Very fruity .. soft tannins and soft fruit acid. The high alcohol content is pt. little to dominant. Medium to long finish. Excellent glas of cdp but little to fruity for my tasting style. Somehow kind of Amarone style. Will keep the last 2 bottles for app 1 year before enjoying again. OT

I was hoping for a much better showing on this one but maybe it's just in a closed Down phase right now. It definetly had good Rhone qualities on the nose and palate but just not enough for a CdP from this producer. I would hold on to these for a couple of years if I had more.

Full of tannins and good balanced acid, Tasted black berries. Excellent wine wich will develop to a cdp master piece. Looking forward. OT

It's hard not to like this Chateauneuf du Pape with all its krisch, garrigue, strawberry, pepper and freshy herb scents. Concentrated with fresh, ripe, jammy berries, this is already drinking great today, yet it should age and develop well for several years.

Clear, dark ruby fading to garnet on the rim. Thick, viscous dark legs. The nose is clean and pronounced. Incredibly complex aromas and flavors. The palate is dry but fruit-laden. The oak is unobtrusive. Medium plus acidity, tannins and alcohol, but everything is very well integrated. It is medium to full bodied, with medium plus flavor intensity and great length on the finish. Drinkeable now with a vigorous decant, or else let it age for at lesst another five years. Mostly old vine Grenache according to the importer.

This was straightforward and delicious. The old lady had it pegged as decadent chocolate-covered cherries. It was rich, even stunning in its mouthfeel, and the finish just coasted on with hardly a trace of the 15% alc. For a linear, not too complicated but still perfectly poised and ready to impress wine, this fits the bill as good as any other 2007 CdP. For what it's worth, this was paired with leftover Indian food, which should have been a disaster, but I wanted to experiment. Needless to say, the combo didn't kill me, but it wasn't half as bad a pairing as I thought it would be. This is just interesting, fruit-laden, multi-faceted wine that isn't trying too hard to be something it's clearly not. If you want an over-the-top, mind-boggling wine experience from Barroche, Julien's Fiancee and Pure bottlings are some of the most profound wines being produced in CdP today--one modern, the other just straight, pure Grenache. But the whole stable seems to be on point right now. Chapeau!

Dinner at Suze with Harry K (Suze Restaurant, Dallas): Red 2 (non blind) - 15% ABV. Translucent ruby in the glass. Aromas of mineral, concrete (no corked), dark berry fruit, and cinnamon. Ripe berry cherry fruit on the palate. Fruit forward with a long finish. Youthfully exuberant. Mid palate this tastes a little less concentrated and more like a cotes du rhone, but the overall effect is nice. 93+

This is not for the faint of heart, it's so thick and dense I can almost chew it but at the same time one of the most delicious wines I've ever tasted. Some cherries find their way through the alchohol in the nose and ripe fruit mingled with cold minerals and licorice makes up the bulk of the taste. The wines is really focused, like a projector beam packed with power that just continues on and on. It's packed with smooth and integrated tannins, lots of acid and enough alchohol to knock you out if you aren't careful. The 2007 really maxes almost every parameter and for me that's exactly what I want.

From the beginning soft and smooth. Ripe and pleasant sweet ripe red and black berries. Sweet liquorice. Soft tannin. Soft acidity. So full bodied and yet so elegant. Extremely harmonious and such a great pleasure drinking. Perfect without being extremely complex. Pleasant oak and garrigue. After double decanting 6 hours prior to the tasting it was a beauty and it continued to improve at least 12 hours after the decant. Then suddenly the bottle was empty. Will it ever taste better?

Yee-HAH! Already when I'm pouring this in the decanter my head is spinning. Raspberrys, figs, cherrys, some kirsch, crushed mineral just rush out of the decanter. An hour later, served to grilled entrecôte with bearnaise and home-grown vegetables, it's lovely. Some meatish tones joins the berrys and mineral and like som other 07 C9Ps I've had it's like the fruit is swimming in something so creamy. It finishes with a wonderful twist of garrigue and licorice. Even though the mouthfeel is wonderfully creamy the acidity is there, just like tannins draped in velvet. This is outstanding.

A (mostly) Burgundy Seminar with Pierre Rovani (Spiaggia, Chicago IL): nose: excellent depth and purity with good amounts of black fruits, meaty tones, red and black cherries, bits of sour red fruits, and hints of some liqueur tones lurk underneath. Very well defined with a nice richness to it
taste: very big tannins with an excellent medium feel. A bit of heat upfront with some black fruits, kirsch liqueur, meats, and some red fruits. Excellent depth with lots of purity of the fruits too
overall: will obviously need time. Very rich, but has a beautiful purity to it at the same time. Considerable tannins show that this will require time, but should leave a wonderful CdP when it comes around

Chapeau!

NOSE: slightly oxidative; hint of licorice.
TASTE: bit oxidative; smooth; leather; walnut; fine tannins; a bit raisined; has been sitting on kitchen counter since it was opened -- it's probably been on that counter one or two days too long.
