My 1st ch. margaux. Pour some 50ml, recorked and rest in cellar for decantage over night. Good nose and palate of red berries with fair acidity and tannin. Tasted no different in day three. Medium to full body, a more feminine left bank bordeaux.

The 2008 Margaux has come a long way since tasted 2.5 years ago. Though it’s still not fully mature, it offers an irresistible, open nose of raspberry, pencil, and rose which follow through to the palate. There’s admirable depth and tension here - as fresh and agile as it is large-framed. Finishes well. Another 5-10 years will help to cultivate additional complexity but this is fundamentally a classic Margaux already drinking well.

Having tasted some 08s recently that were showing well (youthful, but expressive and lively), I opened several of these for a large tasting. Even with several hours of air, this particular batch of 08 Margaux remained quite tight. Broody adolescence in this case, though it looks like others are finding some bottles more accessible.

Château Margaux Vertical 2003-2015: All wines tasted blind alongside the matching vintage of Sassicaia (see separate tasting story). The quality of the Margauxs transcends through the vintages with exceptional complexity and precision and a soft- and roundness not many left bank wines show that young. Many off-vintages delivered great pleasure (06, 08, 12) but of course the best wines were from the top vintages. Winner again was the 2009 (already won in a top 50 wines from 2009 retrospective last June) thanks to an unbelievable depth and sexiness. The 2015 (hyper pure and singular) and the 2010 (the definition of finesse) are just a tad behind, with the 2005 (like so many 2005s) showing promising but not ready. Average score for the Margauxs at very high 94.8 points (clearly higher than the 92.1 for the Sassicaias, which - no surprise - only beat Margaux in the very weak Bordeaux vintages 2011/2013).
TN: Another off-vintage which performed very well tonight and just a tad behind the 2006. The particular highlight here is the wonderful creamy texture and the long, sweet, pure strawberry finish. Medium+ expressive nose, with dark fruit, crushed rocks and some floral notes. Soft, balanced and inviting. Superbly fresh and pure red and blue fruit, graphite. Very nice creamy, melting texture with some slightly angular tannins disturbing the picture a bit but not too much. Very good freshness and as described above, a wonderful finish. As said with the 2006, I wouldn't buy the vintage given the high price but it's still a very nice wine to drink.

A glass being poured released an alluring fragrance I would smell from across the tasting table. Positively Chateau Margaux. Flowers, blue berries, red and black spicy cherries. Multi-dimensional structure. Tannins have some power and still needs some time to interweave with the velvety fruit. A lot going on here. Very regal. Still a bit young. I would hold for another 3-5 years at the least, and should go for decades. Youthful in color as well. Rock solid. One fo the top wines of the Left Bank. I was told this was decanted earlier that morning and was being poured from the bottle at roughly 2PM. Tasted at the Chateau 5/13/2019 96+

Margaux vs Sassicaia double vertical: Sassicaia vs Margaux face-off hosted by a private collector. I was surprised by the unambiguousness of the result in this 13- year (2003-2015) double vertical. Margaux beats Sassicaia 10x with Sassicaia on top only 3x. Of the 26 wines tasted, the top 6 (all scored 95 and higher) were all Margaux with 2009, 2010 and 2015 all somewhere between regal and galactic. In sum, the average score for Margaux was 94.4 (range 92-98) as compared to a Sassicaia average of 93.1 (range 92-94). See tasting story for a few more high level remarks.
The level of precision struck me immediately. A nose of bright berries with herbaceous qualities attached. Black tea, mocha, chocolate add to the amazing sophisticated and linear complexity. Fresh, fruit forward palate with a long finish that impresses with mocha vibes. The complexity wasn’t fully transported, however. An appropriately good performance for the vintage and drinking so well now.

What a surprise, but why? I had drank four bottles from my cellar, and now five, but as young as this beauty is, she is ready to savor. Rose mallow, plum and cherry blossom fragrances surround this delight. Delicious after decanting for two hours, the rich and rounded notes of creme de cassis show off perfect minerality and wonderful elegance. Prepare to be entranced. Oh, and I paid $200 per bottle for a case in 2009. C'est la vie!

Forward and drinking friendly, this exquisite, elegant and and exuberant stunner is rich with black raspberry, tayberry, currant and cassis. She struts and seduces immediately with rounded, mouth caressing delicious tannins. The mouthfeel is glorious and lingering with fragrant notes of fushia, and a hint of poppy. Only eleven years old and will evolve effortlessly for decades, the fruit basket and flower garden live together in perfect harmony.

I wanted to try another bottle of this flower basket delight with its range of sweet elegance. It has been seven years since I first tried at an Acker event in Chicago. Boysenberry, currant, and Tayberry are rich and rounded. The complexity and richness reflect the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and the quality and freshness of the fruit. This wine has many lifetimes and can just get better for forty years. A Brilliant 2008 and eleven more bottles in my cellar.

Small pour from a bottle decanted for about 2 hours. Wow, the nose was aromatic and wild. Red fruit, tobacco/cigar, game, herbs. The taste of the wine matches the nose. Very fresh and elegant with enough acidity to balance everything but not stick out. Silky mouthfeel and no alcohol heat. Perfect pairing with the lamb chops. I was expecting a more buttoned down wine but this was a fun ride while it lasted.

Wine Spectator newbies; 10/18/2018-10/20/2018 (Marriott Marquis): Possibly my second favorite wine of the tasting and it was the second wine I tasted. This was just wonderful. The kindof wine that draws you in and really belongs more in a sit down tasting format where you can try it and revisit and try again. Lots of bright red fruits, some herbal notes. Comes across as very fresh and open. Beautiful wine. Much too young to be drinking now. Just goes to show you top houses make good wines regardless of year.

Mocha, coffee, caramel, chocolate and walnut aromas. Seemed to me that lack of fruit quality was compensated by intense oak-derived flavours. Could also be that the wine is still pretty young.

Château Margaux Masterclass, Paul Pontallier and Alexandra Mentzelopoulos (London): Garnet, less purple than '09,'10. More development on the nose, with pure cassis against a serious lead aroma. The fruit profile here is really beautiful. In this vintage I find violet as well, a more floral tone rather than spices. Cool blue fruits and violet. Lovely. On the palate, it's fresh, with ripe red fruit. Excellent acidity and slightly grainy tannins. Good finish. Perfectly balanced but not yet ready. A more feminine Margaux that serves to show the ability of the terroir to consistently churn out extraordinary wines. I believe it will stand the test of time and, if such concepts are relevant here, offer some value for money. 96-98

Chateau Margaux Masterclass with Paul Pontalier (Decanter FWE, The Landmark hotel, London): Good red colour but lighter and shows more age thana 5yr old, especially coming after the 2010 & 2009. The nose is open, with notes of dark fruits, leather, mint, floral and spice to start and developed a light caramel feel towards the end. Good fruit on the palate, pure and elegant. Very young of course and has a bit of harsh tannin but htis is more classical in style vs the opulent 09 and 10. Good structure and fruit. Soft and subtle wine. very nice. 94-95 and with a lot of future. To be honest on the day we liked it as much as the 2010 and 2009.

Chateau Margaux tasting dinner with Paul Pontalier (At Chateau Margaux): Vertical tasting / dinner at the Chateau. Slightly reserved nose of red fruit with a touch of leather and spices. Opened and drank over 3 hours. Denser than the 2007, nose was a bit more closed, but revealed more red fruit than the 2007 and the same floral notes. Cool, reserved and smooth on the palate. A lot more fruit wrapped up here. Will need a lot more time. Great texture and a long finish. I like it.

Tasted 15 July '12 in the Chateau first year barrel room, along with '08 Pavillon. The grand vin had a fresh minerally nose with some dusky florals and a trace of black current leaf. At first taste I thought it didnt jump up or distinguish itself and could be any of a number of wines. Then we started commenting on it's balance, harmony and purity of flavours. Final conclusion - quietly spoken elegance.

2012 CellarTracker Bordeaux Trip; 5/21/2012-5/24/2012 (Bordeaux, France): 87% Cabernet Sauvignon / 11% Merlot / 1% Cabernet Franc / 1% Petit Verdot. What a difference when compared to the '08 Pavillon Rouge tasted just prior. A fantastic, intoxicating nose of lead pencil shavings - graphite, dark plums and cherries, black pepper and clove spice, along with a shy display of oak, tart red currants, and blueberries. Flavors of cassis and shaved lead pencil coat the tongue, as well as black cherries, saddle leather, black pepper, charred oak, and a hint of tart red currants and espresso. Tons of dry dusty tannins and a huge amount of sharp acidity give this a crisp bite at the end. Long length finish ending on notes of lead pencil, black cherries, and espresso. Beautifully balanced, with an amazing silky texture which leaves a lasting impression. I'd love to taste this again when it has another 10+ years under its belt. Outstanding

Bordeaux Region - Tasted at Chateau: Tasted at Chateau Margaux. Bottle had been opened for a few hours, but not decanted. Soft nose of dark berries, slight bit of earth and floral. I was expecting a deeper, perhaps more concentrated bouquet. Medium bodied, feminine flavors of dark berries, cassis, earth, soft spices. Tannins still mouth filling and need time to integrate. Overall a nice wine but this bottle was not up to the expectations I had of Chateau Margaux.

2008 Margaux opens with a complex perfume of fresh flowers, minerals, cassis, earth, forest floor, cedar and coffee scents. Full bodied and concentrated with round tannins, opulent textures and ripe fruit, this stylish wine ends with a long, polished sexy wave of rich textures. 96 Pts

08 Château Margaux is deep colored with light purple accents. Cassis, floral, oak, baby fennel and blackberry aromas are easy to find. Quite concentrated, but light on its feet, this is a wine of freshness and refinement. The long finish is clean, and expresses a lot of purity in the mouth. 95-97 Pts

Bordeaux 2008 (Bordeaux): Tasted during en primeur week. A discrete nose, somewhat floral and elegant - what is to be expected from this majestic estate. The 87% Cabernet Sauvignon was just almost too discrete on the palate though I liked the cassis and the floral aspects. Nonetheless, it reminded me just a bit of the more small-scaled 2007, which we again tasted. That is to say, while very good, 2008 was not a great vintage for Margaux, and certainly not as impressive as all the other First Growths I tasted. We then also tasted the 2006, which was superior in quality to both the 2008 and 2007. 91-94

Very young of course and has a bit of harsh tannin but htis is more classical in style vs the opulent 09 and 10. Good structure and fruit. Soft and subtle wine. very nice. 94-95 and with a lot of future. To be honest on the day we liked it as much as the 2010 and 2009.

Impressively perfumed nose, great notes of ripe fruit, wood, spice. Very subtle, smooth, nicely balanced and fresh. Less tannic than the 2009 and 2010, also shorter but still long of course. Delicious.

Still closed and tannic, this bottle showed complex notes of toffee, toast and roast coffee. Like a young version of the '89?

Nose - just lovey. Very rich. 95.
Palette - disappointing. I think the bottle was open too long (tasted at LCBO tasting counter). Not rich. Bitter. 90.

Chateau Margaux tasting dinner with Paul Pontalier (At Chateau Margaux): Vertical tasting / dinner at the Chateau. Slightly reserved nose of red fruit with a touch of leather and spices. Medium bodied on the palate but good balance and soft tannins, still a wait though. This will be very classic, like the 04. This was indeed a good buy at the release price.

Tasted at the chateau. Head and shoulders above the Pavillon. Beautiful, fairly typically Margaux nose. Plenty of raspberry, floral, mineral notes here. Fine substance and balance on the palate as well. I think this will develop nicely.
4 to 4+

Bordeaux First Growth Trip; 3/7/2012-3/9/2012 (Bordeaux): Drank at Château Margaux
Nose of cassis, forest floor, mushrooms and spice. Very nice balanced taste but the tannins are still very young. Great complexity and length.
Will come back to this wine in about 5 years.

Bordeaux First Growth Trip; 3/7/2012-3/9/2012 (Bordeaux): Already a very rich nose with spice and violets. Quite smooth on the palate but will need another few years to settle.

We then also tasted the 2006, which was superior in quality to both the 2008 and 2007. 91-94
