In the glass, this wine presents a deep garnet hue, exuding aromas of dark fruits, plum, blueberry, liquorice, and a hint of menthol. On the palate, it feels as though it's on the cusp of its aging curve, yet it still offers a vibrant burst of fruit upfront, transitioning to savory nuances in the mid-palate and finish. The presence of sharp tannins yet to polymerize suggests there may still be more life in this wine.

Decanted off the - huge! - amount of sediment and re-decanted back into the bottle, which was a good move. Very classy Australian shiraz, still very youthful - I imagine 5 more years and it would show much more tertiary character. Typical nose and palate of caramel, coffee, plum jam, liquorice, furniture polish, very well knit, a touch of leather coming through. Very, very smooth. For me I will always prefer the more savoury Rhone style - I find Australian shiraz always just too sweet and smooth - but there's no doubting the class of this wine.

NobleRottersSydney - mostly Penfolds (Fix, St James, Sydney): {cork, 14%} [DavidH] At least a generation young than the 98, unsurprisingly. Big nose of cherry liqueur and plums. Touch of vanilla. Opened up further with time. The familial resemblance to the 98 is there, but this seems to have more extract and oak generally, with medium/high dusty tannins, and medium/full weight. Flavours follow the nose. Medium/long finish. Hard to believe it’s nearly twenty years old though. Likely will be better in another ten years.

Under screwcap this was an excellent Shiraz. Heaps of black and blue fruits. Full bodied without being OTT. Oak a whisper in the background. Lick of boot polish and leather for complexity. My only quibble was the lack of 'personality'. If it had one I would say "High Quality Aussie Shiraz", perhaps this was onlt stark in the ontext of the other wines tried alongside it. Standalone excellent. Still plenty of improvement to come.

Double decanted for 2-3 hours. A fairly relaxed but polished Aussie Shiraz. Not a bruiser. While clearly new world it is relatively restrained compared to some of its Barossa siblings. Lots of polished sweet black fruit with some savouriness and a hint of spice on the palate. Alcohol is in check. Tannins are resolving nicely with a hint of powder. In the zone now with a good decant, but should be fine to hang on to for another 10 years.

Not over the hill, but at the back end of the prime drinking window. Mature tertiary notes are starting to take over the primary fruit that I think these wines are best known for. Structure is still there and overall a great wine. Would have been a 95+ if I had got to it a couple of years ago.

Ready to go, gave a few hours decant. Some savoury earthy notes with touch of liquorice. Plenty of fruit still. Seems a little simple. Not brash and decent enough. Can drink with or without food.

Nice full bodied red. No signs of aging. Not overly complex, seems to be in between primary notes (dark fruits, spices) and secondary (chocolate). Didn’t get some of the bacon fat or smoke I get from French Syrah. Nice texture, easy drinking with red meats, tannins melt away and nice balance. It’s in a good place, hoping it evolves and opens up a bit more, I have one more that I’ll camp on until 2030.

by this stage of the night the memory was fading and it was about to be destroyed by Jezza and his bloody whiskies. And i have always had a love hate relationship with St Henri. Sometimes it impresses and sometimes it doesn't. But for value for money and ability to age compared to other overpriced Penfold siblings, its a cogent bargain. i have struggled with some 05 barossa but this was superb. still purple and sweet and lovely medium to full bodied palate with trademark penfolds layered fruit and structure. A little too much acid and tannin for me but only because it needed more ageing. Lovely drop.

Decanted 2 hrs. Big blueberry, tar and mint. Decadent and silky smooth. Near perfect balance. Long long finish. Dark red fruit finish with savory hickory wood smoke accents. Powerful and elegant at the same time. Aging perfectly. Drink now-2030.

Excellent, but still fresh and has plenty more life. 14% alc. Colour:deep black berries, crimson edges Bouquet: some blackberry but overwhelmed by a corn mealy character Palate: lovely dry brambly blackberry characters, big soft tannins and full body, great elegance and balance, fruit based and good acid. Lovely St. Henri that was dark and deep, without being extracted or bitter. No sign of oak, but notable cedar, subtle blue fruits, no heat. Just really well put together. Unfortunately the price has outpaced my love of this wine, but I'll drink it when I can afford to.

Age really pulled this together and makes it a far cry from the standard big, bold, ripe Aussie Shiraz. Plum and macerated dark berries mix with a beautiful peppery note and finish with a hint of tobacco and earth. Decanted first an hour. Superb with grilled tri-tip.

Zoom blind tasting #5: Syrah (At home during circuit breaker): A nice, polished Aussie Shiraz. This really stood out from Rhone wines on show just on its nose alone. It smelt rather more modern and international, with sweet notes of blueberries, cassis and plums galore, these coated with a touch of glycerol, and then a little bit of garrigue and spice, maybe a touch of violets. With a bit of time, there was just a little hint of earth and meat creeping in at the edges. Really quite nice I must say, but certainly different from the more delicate, garrigue-driven Northern Rhone bouquets of some of the other wines. The palate was very different too - thicker, creamier, with more oak influence on it, but also with just rather a riper fruit expression, with a sweet depth of plums and blackberries and cassis, almost straying into confit fruit territory, this infused with a bit of spice, herb and a lick of minty eucalyptus on the mid-palate. There a touch of earthiness and a hint of savoury meat, maybe a touch of bittersweet herb on the finish, but this was really more about plump fruit than anything else. Pleasant though, with a nice sense of balance and soft, velvety tannins making for a very drinkable wine; yet also with a nice sense of depth and breadth that marked it as more serious than a well-made quaffer. A very good example starting to drink well now.

I bought this case recently on BBX from Berry Bros & Rudd to fill a gap in my St Henri collection and I am over the moon.
A two hour decant allowed the wine to open up into layers of both fruit and the complex tertiary flavours that come with age and patience. Nose and palate were superb and the finish was long and sustained. It took four hours to slowly enjoy this bottle over the course of an evening and it got better and better.
An interesting surprise was that a storage label on the case revealed that the previous owner would have been James Bond's boss a few years ago. Great dinner table story and thanks to Sir D for listing the wine for sale!

Travelling along really nicely, aided by the screwcap I would say, and of course the serious backbone of great fruit and oak. Powerful but not in the hot phenolic way some big South Aussie shiraz can be. Lovely clove and vanilla nose, fruit mince pie with a bit of red berries there as well in the mouth. Nice long smooth taste as you would expect of a wine with this heritage, clearly great fruit and good oak. Aged very well, probably got more time and may integrate a touch more but drinking very nicely now. I'd not muck around if I had more - just get into them if you have 'em!
Dinner at Shishen Hanten (Shishen Hanten, Mandarin Orchard, Singapore): Nice. The nose was rather reserved, but with clearly classic Aussie Shiraz nonetheless, with deep draws of blue and blackberries, spice, earth and eucalyptus, all drawn together into a deep dark bouquet. The palate had a nice savouriness to it, with olive tapenade, dark berries and a nice earthiness on the attack and midpalate, and a little bit of spice and eucalyptus lingering into a solid finish. Fine tannins and good acidity lent a good sense of structure to the whole package. Nice, and starting to drink well now.

Impeccable.

Interesting. No visual signs of age, still a dark/opaque purple/Ruby. Nose was a bit one dimensional. Spicy is the best one word description. Lots of fruit, acidity and the tannins were in balance but the shorter finish and lack of complexity don't permit a better rating.

NobleRottersSydney - Penfolds prior to 2007 (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney): {cork, 14%} (Greg) Decanted at start of dinner. Seemed similar to the 2002, although the fruit is more toward the blacker end of the spectrum, with more blackberry, less plum, and a touch of charcoal and tar. Tasted younger than the 3-year difference indicated; it still has a youthful rawness to it, and a sense of power, although it’s still more a dense medium-body than anything heavier. Medium long finish, promises much over the next decade. Just shades the 02 for quality.

So enticing on the nose with perfumed blackberry, raspberry, olive, mint and black licorice. Beautiful profile with near perfect balance. Long licorice and tar like finish. Decadent fresh and lively. Ripe but not over done, so elegant but there is this power underneath it all. Decanted 2 hours. Drink now- 2025.

This wine is definitely at it's peak right now, but I have the feeling it will remain in this very bright spot for quite a while. The perfect mix of primary, secondary and tertiary aromas, it's beautiful. Rich and structured, but not heavy at all. Medium+ finish. Drink or hold until 2025-2030.
An intense, rich and brooding Shiraz (10% Cabernet to add structure) with 11 years of age on it. Deep purple, almost black in color. One of the best Aussie's I've had to date. Beautiful nose of black cherry, pepper, tobacco leaf and new leather. The palate oozes blueberry, with black currant, smoke, espresso and leather. A very long, beautiful finish showcasing green mint.

The best bottle of St.Henri I had in a long time. Over the years, I realized that I liked my St.Henri on the younger side. But this 10-year bottle was delicious. Showed some good complexity, the perfect mix of primary, secondary and tertiary aromas. Too bad Penfolds became greedy and significantly jacked up their prices in the past few years.

This is a pretty fresh, blackberry oriented, youthful St.Henri. It's certainly attractive but along with the enjoyment comes the disappointment of knowing that this will gain character and complexity over the next decade. So if you have a good cellar, wait.

A nice Shiraz. Dark deep purple in color. Flavors range from blackberry, currant, spice, earth, and chocolate. The finish lasts forever. I waited several years to open this and it was well worth the wait and is ready to be enjoyed now, yet it has many more years left to age.

Sooo disappointed with St.Henry lately. Very similar to my experience with the 2004...well made but not impressive at all. I guess I'll keep my other bottles for another 10 years and maybe I'll appreciate it. rich, deep but not well defined. An average quality wine.

Deep red color, opaque. Strong black fruit nose. The taste was a little disappointing - I was expecting a smoother richer taste as it is 10 years old. The flavor is a little flat and there is a lack of obvious fruit - I think this wine is past its best - contrary to the majority of posts. The taste is pleasant, but mild and below the price point expectation. It may be that before I got it it was stored poorly somewhere in the distribution chain - I bought it in 2012 - already 7 years old. I have had excellent St Henri's in the past.

A pleasure and privilege to drink this 10 years +1 day after my 2005 wedding. Black fruits, pepper. Undertones of leather, old wood, coffee, rust. Smooth, balanced, tannin envelops the tongue on the finish. Drank from a 375 bottle after decanting for an hour. I wish the bottle had been a magnum, and wish I had another for a few years time!

Reaching the peak of its maturity. Very flavorful and while full bodied it does not lack elegance. Notes of dark macerated fruit, leather, coffee, and some notes lifted herbal aromas typical of Australia like eukalyptus and mint.

NobleRottersSydney - 2005 Oz reds (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney): {cork, 14%} (Greg) Decanted just prior to dinner. Plummy. Fruity, but surprisingly developed. Medium powdery tannins and medium/full-body. Plum liqueur flavours, but still very dry. Even palate, displays a chocolate tinge as it sits in the glass. Neither fruit-bomb nor really aged yet. It has a medium length finish, but does seem to end abruptly. I wasn’t totally convinced; maybe it’s just at an awkward stage. Certainly would have benefited from more decanter time. Haven’t had many last-decade St Henri’s; this seems to lack the charm of earlier iterations of the label. Perhaps time will help; that’s the pedigree anyway.

Excellent deep red colored classic Penfolds better Shiraz. I had this with roast lamb which had lots of flavor and fat to accentuate the strong wine. The fruit is strong but well balanced and no one fruit taste predominated and the wine has matured well, 14.5% alcohol, lots of sediment. There is still strong tannin present. The taste is smooth and it has been worth the wait to get the mature taste. This wine is probably good for another 5+years. The cork was still in excellent shape - but the bottle has been stored on its side all the time I have had it (8 years).

We drank this with a thick strip steak. It decanted with noticeable sediment, and we let it rest for 30-40 minutes. The wine is a deep inky red with a brick brown undertone. The nose has hints of tobacco-smokiness and black currant. On the palate the black currant dominates, and it closes with hints of leather and a pleasant alcoholic heat. Slow legs in the glass hint at the rich mouthfeel. I wish I had another bottle to hold longer.

Soft maroon reddish brown. Not too thick, slightly translucent. Bouquet of lavender, clove, pencil shavings, red fruits, and a slight chemical element.
First pour (no decant) tasting notes: Palette of tart cherry. Acid line keeps tight all the way through. Almost citrus like. No discernible oak. Soft puckering tannins. A very long finish that hangs around. At this stage, a very savory wine. Can't help but feel it would be a lovely wine with food. As it stands, without food, it's still lovely. It tastes pure and uninfluenced. A wine from the ages, but for them? Intriguing. I still feel it has more to give, more to develop and unwind it's fruit palette spectrum. It might be a bit young.
Let's reflect on the merit after a double-decant: Palette has softened and become more rounded, as opposed to angular. Acid has subsided to allow for plumb and floral notes. Caramel now. A smokiness. A rich wine. Much softer wine than I expected. Soft, yes, and delicate, but full. And the tannins and mouth-feel sort of help it along to reach that level of length and complexity associated with a good wine. A very good wine. Actually, after a double-decant and 30 mins in the glass, it is a beautiful wine. There is blueberry now. The fruit has just come through. At every angle that could be judged as offensive, debatable, or contentious (talking too sour, too sweet, too warm with alcohol, no fruit), it has just hit the pocket inside and avoided any such extreme. So now what it is is an "in the pocket" wine, of delicate purity, yet assertive effect, length, and impression. Perhaps not a massive "wow" wine, but very much one to savor for everything it does offer. Drink now (why wait?), but decant two hours at least. Would love to try again, but alas, just the one bottle was gifted. 94.5/100

Decanted for 30mins. Dark purple, mainly ash and smoke, followed by blackberries. Smooth and restrained as the others say, but yes very elegant and refined. Great brillant red color in the glass. The nose shows some of the vanilla of the American oak but in no way is it disjointed. Some raspberry and mint peak through as well. The palate shows great weight and depth but in no way overwrought. Flavors of red currant and raspberry ice cream emerge. Great balance and this will go for a number of years.

A well-balanced, well-made wine. However, nothing about this wine was really spectacular. Just solid all the way around...no shortcomings, but no wow factor. I like the fact that this does not have over the top fruit like most Shiraz on the market today. I have one more bottle left and will wait a few years before drinking. I think this wine has enough stuffing and balance to last several more years...perhaps even a decade.

Drank well, and enjoyed this older-world version of Auzzie Shiraz. The nose was muted early, but fruit came on strong. Dark Red Berry blend, with some Black tea, oak, an cedar. Night two, this had gotten more complex, with secondary notes of dried beef jerky, hoizan sauce, and spice. While I tend to stay away from Auzzie Shiraz these days, this was a really well made bottle, and If I had more, then I'd hold for 2-3 more years. IT's got the stuff to become better.

Equally enjoyable as when previously drank. Typical Aussie shiraz nose, but on the elegant side, with blueberry, eucalypt, chocolate and lavender. No wood effect is evident, since this is tank fermented and aged in 1470 liters large old wooden vats. Amazingly pure and crystal-clear. On the palate it is perfectly round, silky-textured and vibrant with bright fruit and balancing acidity. Tannins are soft and fine-grained. Long aftertaste. At an excellent stage to enjoy, will keep for at least one decade.

For me it was a surprise how elegant this Shiraz was. Medium bodied with a firm structure of ripe tannins and acidity it felt more like a Cabernet in the mouth than a Shiraz. Aromatics of course were typical of Australian Shiraz with a nice core of blackberry and blueberry fruit together with licorice and eucalyptus notes. Notable absence of any oak influence was very pleasing.

Deep ruby fading to a narrow garnet rim with a ripe and oppulent nose of blueberries, black cherries, dark chocolate, smoke, meat and liquorice with hints of vegetality. Fresh and well defined with well blended in oak. Tight and velvety on palate with refreshing acidity, firm high quality tannins and persistent finish. Started to reveal some complexity but can improve over the next 3-4 years and keep(?) for another decade.

Dark ruby with purplish hue. Nose of creamy Vanilla, mocha with deep but muted nose of underlying dark fruits. High acid, quite feminine, quite muted and long fresh finish. Thsi 2005 is a great effort for this wine, it will be absolutely magnificient in a few years. After a couple of hours decanting, the nose is quite nice, rich & complex balck fruit with exotic spices. Unlike the '03 this wine has much oak influence. The 03's redeeming quality was its purity. Nonetheless, the '05 has enough richness and elegance to score very well. Dark chocolate and black fruit lead the way. This wine needs decanting and air time at this young age. I wish I could have held off a few years on this one...its going to be exceptional.

Soft, fruity, purple Aussie shiraz that will stain your glass. with some considerable heat. Soft tannins keep the thing balanced, and make it pleasant enough to sip as well as a good wine with red sauce dishes. I give it a 91 rather than something in the 80's because there is enough elegance to it to distinguish it from a fruit bomb from down under.

A pretty elegant wine, not your typical Aussie Shiraz, Love the purity of the fruit. As no new oak is used, the fruit shines though. Due to a little more time in the bottle than most current releases of Aussie shiraz (2005 versus 2008 for most wineries) the wine seems to me to be cool in texture (still 14.5% al.), rather than the "hot" feeling shiraz's. I would be interesting to see how this ages as the fruit and the alcohol are in a nice balance now.

Should have an "I love it" button. Probably my favourite Penfolds wine when taking all factors, including cost, into the equation.
Lots of sediment and I would recommend decanting at least an hour, preferably longer, before drinking.

The nose has hints of tobacco-smokiness and black currant. On the palate the black currant dominates, and it closes with hints of leather and a pleasant alcoholic heat. Slow legs in the glass hint at the rich mouthfeel. I wish I had another bottle to hold longer.

So fresh with loads of acidity and blackberry fruit. Lingering griping tannin on the finish. Great balance and structure. Mint, earth, olive paste and minerals. Concentrated and powerful. So youthful.

Soft maroon reddish brown. Not too thick, slightly translucent. Bouquet of lavender, clove, pencil shavings, red fruits, and a slight chemical element.
First pour (no decant) tasting notes:
Palette of tart cherry.
Let's reflect on the merit after a double-decant:
Palette has softened and become more rounded, as opposed to angular.

Generous mouth coating and medium/long finish. A very young wine that hasn't started opening up yet, try again in say 3 or 4 years. Was very enjoyable nevertheless.

Unreal. So restrained and elegant with air. Vanilla, leather, smoke, herbs, and candied cherry nose. So smooth on the entry with enveloping flavors of sweet cocoa, cherry, strawberry, and bbq smoke. The finish lasts and lasts. I've never had Grange or RWT, but can they really be any better?

Nose is a little short at this time showing smoke, mint and white pepper. Very refined, full bodied and what a smooth finish with blackberry, eucalyptus and graphite. This is enjoyable now but still a baby, drink 2013-2018.
