  • at 15 years old still another 35 years of utter drinking pleasure to go in 750ml format this with g-max 2010 and 04 will go forever in a well kept cellar
2009 the great year of perfect weather high fruit in the wines warm not to hot, ensures several top grosses g dry gr cru have long legs in the cellar and that is the difference between some other vintages that while they may be lighter more delicate some lack power!A truly great wine has a big presence ,this is one of those !
The present tasting from what i have left is still far away from peeking this is simply because of that massive fruit some call it petrol style who cares if you have not got this in any white wine that wine cant last more than say 25 years
this wine actually improves with age so far not many do that some of the old greats of france 28 is one did it
the construction of this wine is consummate long full in the mouth pleasant not to high alc what a long middle and medium finish its not bone dry but it is dry with a fruit all over feel its crisp and has its own charaktor
iv had some weak ggs in my time never off keller or shaefer -frohlich or Donnhoff i love mature older wines best wait until this is 25 years old it will be something else
this wine is more in the gr cru la montrachet style if that makes sense its a pinnacle of achievement for the maker and a iconic clasic in the making
you need to be eating lobster thermadore or a poulet de bresse to get the big kick out of this do try !i think in my life its in the top 3 dry riesling of my lifes drinking and iv sat at some important tastings in germany in my day
drinking this without food is a conversation piece most people stay silent its such a shock in quality 2009 that great gg year will not be forgotten superb year in france and germany

I love this wine. For me it is the best Riesling from the warm vintage 2009. But this it is less lean and focussed. More yellow ripe fruits and too sweet in the finish. Coincidentally someone brought Felseneck 2006. It felt much fresher and less sweet in the finish. This bottle was not over his peak but was not perfect. Could be fresher. 93-94

  • This has come in a bit in three years. No longer grapefruit now a nice mix of lemon fruit, zest and pith. Just a hint of petrol, 2 stroke, and fine and lingering flavour. Good depth and balance. Should evolve for another decade.

  • I have been trying to get my hands on this for over 5 years and finally got some. Easily the best I have tasted, one of the best finest dry rieslings ever made, it is up there with g max 2004. Still young and cannot wait to try more.

  • Undoubtably one of the best Rieslings I have drunk, and that is over the course of 50 years.
After some time given air the aroma came up as a beautiful cocktail of fruit, all so fresh, the wine filled the mouth with smooth everlasting mineral fruit, so much length, this really is a stand out Riesling.
Luckily I have a couple more, no sign of tiredness.

  • Regular dinner group (@ My place): Beautiful and complex bouquet with a slight touch of petrol. On the palate very clean and complex as well with firm and beautiful acidity, mineral impressions and a slight, pleasant touch of sweetness and an enormous length.

  • Inspired by previous tn’s pnp 4,5 hours ago. Started ok, but not Great. Grew and grew over time. Ends superfresh, flinty and with a slight petrol hint. Bottle is too small… by the end it is very obvious that it is a great wine and it is has that presence where you instantly know that it is one of the very best within its category. Is there any gg better than this? Not sure. Will open next bottle 6 hours prior. Next up I Think Will be the 2007 that i have not had for ages.

For me the best Riesling out of 2009. Still so fresh , no oxidation signx. Typical SF nose, lemon dominated, no petrol, bright colour. Compared to the Idig 2009 Magnum much fresher and less ripe yellow stone fruits. 98

  • i remember kp Keller telling me years ago he rated this right up there with his own 2009 g-max we tried in the Trier Auction in 2010 ! if you like very great then you will like this , the outstanding wine will still be around in 30 years time ! the bottle we just drank was well cellared underground - this wine can and will stand up to any french 2k-4k each bottle of La montrachet with ease its a conversation piece wine , try and fiend a bottle though sadly no one will part i looked on winesearcher and it seems extinct to the market x
I have just found superb note from 2010. from a pro tasting at the winery and it goes like this i think one or two gave this 100 pt back then =
2009 FELSENECK GROSSES GEWCAHS -Tim Matt and i all agreed this was the best dry wine he had ever made ,Matt even said he would pay 5000 ds. a bottle . id say he got caught up a little .But anyway this wine was Great -Hardcore distinct and very mineral nose , Lime Rock Candy almost . A wafting Sea breeze on this living breathing nose .Slatey Flinty Nutty came to mind .This was just so much more complex already than the other three . The palate is just a lesson in precision . Almost seems like it was engineered but not in a Spoofy way . But its not even close to engineered .About as natural as it gets in Germany .There is a smoke factor to this wine that is absolutely compelling .A finish that lasts more than FOREVER.A mouthfeel that is so caressing , filigreed and soft you could drink a whole bottle in an Hour and just a WOW factor that i have rarely found in the GG category . The wine was perfect to me and obviously to Tim

A had fresher bottles but still the best expression of dry Riesling that is possible from 2009. Saline, not too sweet and yellow stone fruits in the background. Still young. 95

  • This is no longer Christmas, no longer praying for the Lord!
But watch out, here comes one of the real Riesling REFERENCE bottles, and if not seen the label before would like to talk about an 2015 or younger bottle,

The nose, pure flint stone, zesty grapefruit slightly, clean and firm,

initially wet stone licking from a winter mountain stream rolling down the palate, some slightly fruit, lemon zest and some grapefruit,
mineral gun powder appearance like my colonel grandfather giving the order to fire to all of his regiment batteries simultaneously,
that young, really stunning refreshing, with demanding acid still, enormous length, wild and electric, HIGHLY recommended!
    Reference-Riesling GG-bottle, ***(**), long life ahead, a decade+ still,
an easy going 99 for today

  • a glory of german dry wine making - had this with friends a few weeks ago -the fruit from 09 sun the perfect acid will keep this iconic wine alive for another 20-30 years i invissage in 750 ml in mag or d-mag 30-50 years easy peazy pie-the 09 felseneck is to me very close to a keller abste 09 or morstein 10 like an amalgamation of those 2 wines rolled into 1 -this wine will be understood by keller lovers -enuf said re keller great winemaker he is -here we have a wine of equal perfection - we have the clarity the layers of mineral fruit -i mean this is so huge in flavours yet so delicate -the mid pallet leads you to an extraordinary long long finish that stays on the tongue ! a few gave this 100 points in its first 2 years - they may have been right-im still trying to buy more but there is it seems a que and the 2 x in the last 2 years iv seen 6 or 12 it sells in seconds- hi ho -- this the wittmann la borne 09 dry auction wine - the keller g-max 09 and esp 10 g-max are something one must taste before you pop your clogs - maybe even the wittmann brun gg dry and abste 09 and 10 gg -- all great great dry riesling -Tim Frohlich needs be proud of this wein but remember this needs several hours of decant as it is soooo young even now

  • Final bottle from a three bottle lot purchased in 2011. Rich but vibrant, pale yellow colour with green reflections; impressively deep and complex nose, with flowers, mint and grapefruit, lemon and smoky minerals, waxy bottle-age; the palate shows a lot of power and concentration, but the acidity doesn't manage to prevent a slightly languid feeling on the back palate and on the finish, even if there are salty minerality and zesty grapefruit bitters to provide a nice kick. I like it slightly better now than I did in 2017, so I am returning to my original score, but I don't think that it will ever be better than it was in its youth.

In great shape, on eof the best German Rieslings of this vinatge, even the bottle was a Little bit more evolved than usually. Still didn't reach his Peak. some yellow Stone fruits as peach and pineapple but salinity and purity is trump. Not overriped. At at least 8-10 more years ahead. 94-95

  • Another more mature bottle from my cellar,
having red the tasting notes here from last year before,
not that convinced, cause my experience is mostly a very ripe showing from this vintage, so try on my own,
pnp, put it in a big Riedel Bordeaux Sommelier, quite soaked cork, ripe stonefruit on the nose, little slate aka spice,
initially a finesse like stonefruit, but some dried apricot and ripe Elstar apples, good weight, deep, BUT in this bottle there is no enormous tension, for me all quite balanced, not really fully mature, but clearly at the beginning of its drinking window, O.K., more playful than the Escherndorfer from yesterday, but honestly, I do expect more from this vineyard and estate!
Maybe a bottle variance, I am always critical of a nearly soaked cork, but again for me a very typical 2009 GG showing,
the strong acid in the background will help to keep this wine in good condition, but the fruit of this bottle is a really (over)ripe one,
and clearly said: we are talking about a wine and bottle being between very good+ and outstanding+,
hopefully my next bottle will show different, ****(+?), 91 for this specific bottle at the moment,

revisit this bottle after three more hours, surprisingly NOW great purity, clean acid driven tension, cannot believe this myself, has changed to a complete different showing,
could this be the same bottle? So pleased that S-F Felseneck is now like it should be!
No more ripe fruit, all blown off, a stunning quality of this Felseneck,
My prejudice of the 09 Riesling GG vintage is invalid now, biting acidic finish, nothing there but spice, smoke and clean stonelicking, now ***(**), around 95,96, long life ahead!
So this needs a very decent decant or slow ox over half a day plus!

  • Tasted blind in a tasting of fifteen dry 2009 Rieslings.

Moderately deep and concentrated lime-green color. Somewhat stuffy, reductive and understated nose with aromas of sponti funk, some wizened red apples, a little bit of dank herbal greenness and a hint of sweet grapey fruit. The wine is crisp, clean and perhaps dry-ish to slightly off-dry with medium-body and firm and lively flavors of tart lemony citrus fruits, some key lime, a little bit of stuffy reduction, light tangy notes of Granny Smith apple, a little bit of steely minerality and a hint of grapey fruit. Incisive bracing acidity. The finish is crisp, long and acid-driven with lively flavors of tangy salinity, steely minerality, some lemony citrus fruits, a little bit of apple peel bitterness, light stony mineral tones and a hint of herbal spice. The fruit flavors feel quite understated in the aftertaste and they quickly give way to the more prominent mineral tones.

A very impressive, crisp and clean GG Riesling that is still both painfully young and also slightly reductive even now, at 10 years of age. On the palate the wine is clean and precise, but it is obvious from the nose that the wine is still in dire need of further aging. Not even two hours of letting the wine breathe did make it open up fully. Most likely won't be hitting its apogee within the next 10 years. Obviously a wine with more potential than immediate pleasure; let it wait and expect the score to go up with age. Scored a total of 13 points, making the wine finish in the 13th place.

  • Blind (guessed correctly), again WOTN for me.
By far the best 2009 Riesling in Germany for me. Untypical: not fat, not broad, elegant, saline, flintstone, so young and reductive. Still completely on the citrus side. A milestone. 97+

  • Horizontal tasting of the27 best 2009 German Dry Rieslings; 9/16/2019-9/26/2019 (Concept Resling 14.09.2019): semiblind
This was a flight of 3 wines. I guessed all of them from Pfalz and I was completely wrong as many others at the table. I love this wine and it was my favorite wine from 2009. It is brilliant clear and elegant with a lot of power. It is powerful maybe a hint too much. Apricot, honey. at his Peak. Normally I know it less evolved and more reductice without being so muscular. At the end more focused. 93

Again great. For me (one of) the best 2009 German Riesling(s). So lean, so fresh, herbal pink grapefruit acidity, balanced, not reached his peak, at least 7-10 years to come, no aging signs, no botrytis, no honey or petrol. 96+

  • This bottle was disappointing, potentially heat damaged or opened too soon after shipping (3 days). Well made, mid life Riesling but muted by a distracting phenolic bitterness / emptiness in the mid-palate which did not subside after 2 hours in decanter nor on the second day. I assume it was a flaw given the disparity in the high praise here versus my experience.

  • Nahe^3: 10 vintages of Halenberg, Hermannshöhle and Felseneck + X (@Private location, Frankfurt): *** brief note from an extensive tasting ***
    Glass: Gabriel Gold
Tasted blind. Bottle opened about 2-4h before, double decanted before serving.
    Pale golden yellow color.
A bit less energy and tension than we had this wine a month before, but very consistent. Very balanced flight. No signs of reduction in the nose this time. Lots of stony mineral notes, fantastic pressure and length. Has at least another decade ahead. 94-95

  • “Ten Years After” 2009 Dry Riesling Tasting (Private Location): The Nahe flight was certainly a big step up after the slightly disappointing Morstein trio. This Felseneck from Schäfer-Fröhlich shows a wonderful harmonious nose of white fruit, elder blossom and also some nice yellow fruit (but in a fresh not in a ripe way). Lean on the palate with an incredible balanced acidity; vibrant and full of tension. Very long, salty finish. Definitely one, if not the wine of the night. Best bottle till now. Big up Tim Fröhlich!

*** just some brief notes, no full details, rating in context of the vertical tasting ***
Opened about 10h before, not decanted. Tasted blind.
Youthful pale golden color. Fantastic, medium+ intense nose: Some reductive (Sponti) notes, lots of fruit, elder blossoms, herbs, mineral notes. Complex, multi-layered and airy.
On the palate really amazing! Incredible pressure and tension. Wonderful aromas of ripe exotic fruit, pineapple, herbs, saltiness. Depth and balance. Wonderful length. At its peak, but will stay there for at least 5+ years. One of my WOTN! 96-97

  • 2009 was certainly no easy year but this wine is simply outstanding. It has the typical Schäfer-Fröhlich Nose (some spontaneous fermentation). It has the body, fruit and sweetness but it at the same time is beautifully lean with great acidity. The length and concentration are outsatnding! Love it! Always liked the Felseneck 2011 but 2009
    Is even stronger.

  • Riesling Freaks lazy afternoon lunch (Chez Hugo - Baltimore): En Magnum. Expressive, incredibly mineral nose displaying rich yet pure white fruit with a hint of yellow, lemon curd, granny smith, jalapeno, thyme, spicy spices and limestone. Excellent concentration, incredible energy, focus and precision, bright acidity, strong mineral presence and a long rich yet pure white citrus fruit driven finish with thyme and jalapeno at the end. There is a bit of fizz. It combines the richness of Keller and the purity and freshness of the Wittmann. It is really enjoyable already but can improve for a couple more decades if you prefer the strong petrol note.

  • I had it twice at the same day. As always very fresh, clean and pure. The nose is demanding because of natural yeast but the palate is a feast for the tongue papilles. Yuzu, stone fruit, wet gravels. For me the best 09 Riesling in his stage in this hot and difficult vintage. Most of the 09's are broad and with ripe yellow stone fruits but this one is a real gem and didn't reach his top. 95-96

  • Henry Comes to Tucson: 2001 Tuscany night (Tucker household): This comes across a little younger and rounder than the 05 Halenberg. Dense, yet still with great freshness and balance. Yellow orchard fruits play a supporting role to the predominant mineral driven nature of the wine. Nice acidity keeps it fresh and it has very clean lines.

  • Asperger Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: X-Mas tasting (Private Location): One of my all time favorites. Unfortunately my experience with the older vintages are very limited, so I thought it would be a good time to open a bottle.
I decanted the wine only for some minutes and poured it back into the bottle to gave a bit of air. In the beginning lots of ripe yellow fruit mixed with a fresh, herbal component which stayed the whole night through. The fruit vanished a bit after some time in the glass and lots of citrus notes alongside gooseberry, chassis and stinging nettle emerge.
At first this Felseneck appears very sweet on the palate for a GG standard. I´m not quite sure if it is a reason of sugar or only high extract so the wine taste sweet although it isn´t from a analyse point of view. The sweetness integrate over the night. Very elegant, lean and long. Lots of herbs and stone components on the back end.
A still very young Felseneck which I adore because it is so versatile. It disappoints me in the first place to come back even stronger. I´m pretty sure it will be even better in five years. So keep your bottles.

  • Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: X-Mas Tasting: Tasted blind. Popped and poured which was a tiny mistake: This wine needs a lot of air!!!
Clear, pale golden color. Clean, medium intense, developing nose. At first only some ripe apple, freshness and herbs, a tiny bit reductive. Over time with air lovely mineral notes and citrus fruit emerges and the nose got more complex.
Legally dry but with some amount of residual sugar. Medium+ ripe acidity. At first some blurred fruit that gets way more precise after about 1h. Gooseberry, yellow stone fruit, ripe citrus, herbs and very fine crushed stones. Finish is subtle, elegant and quite long. Very elegant. Interesting to see that it is from the warm 2009 vintage. Not fat or broad. Only reminiscence seems to be the bit more residual sugar. Still young with a bright future of at least 5-10years. 92-93

  • Straw yellow. Intense and typical SF scent of litchi, red apples, white flowers and citrus. Taste of litchi, citrus-candy, red apples, kiwi and grapefruit. A bit funky and bubbly first but that passed with 30 min of airation. Impressive freshness and no petroleum aroma. The fruit comes across as slightly tropical and floral, balanced acidity and medium length.
Ingen petroleumsaroma. Frukten oppleves som lett tropisk og floral, godt balansert syre og medium lengde.

  • Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow" #020: Riesling Grosses Gewächs (By JdB): In the bouquet minerals and tropical fruits like pineapples as well as a touch of petrol. On the palate grapefruit, rhubarb, firm acidity and length.

1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • This is a quite powerful Grosses Gewächs, especially in the context of the Nahe, but it is in that sense a true representative of the 2009 vintage. It displays a very deep chalky minerality combined with tart lemon fruit, any remaining spontaneous fermentation aromas have vanished and, it fills the mouth and envelops the taste buds, but it it hardly playful or vibrant and it does lack some flavour persistence on the finish, especially for such a forceful wine. A solid performance, but best to drink up.

Hugely overrating wines when they are young, is not the exclusive fiefdom of American wine critics by the way. This is Weinwisser waxing lyrical in October 2010 (for German speakers only): "Steile Bockenauer Südlage mit sehr viel Schiefer und etwas Quarzit im Boden. Wild, kräuterig und (feuer-)steinig im Duft, ganz pur und rein, wahnsinnig komplex, mit aus der Tiefe kommenden reifen, konzentrierten und doch so feinen Früchten – genial! Generös und kraftvoll am Gaumen, puristisch und salzig, sehr elegant und perfekt balanciert, mit enormer Substanz und reichhaltiger, aber doch immer subtiler Frucht. Sehr lang. Ginge es noch feiner, noch vielschichtiger? 20/20 2013–2030."

  • I do need only one word for this extremely fine stuff: precision! sharp as a knife made from damask, an acidic Riesling mamba, a white undomesticated stallion, best of the best GG from 2009 ever, so young still, stonelicking, mineralic bite, unbelievabel........, a walk on the extreme side of bonedry GG- Riesling! for the next decades............, ***(**+), 95- 98+?

  • Opened 2.5 hours in advance but not decanted. Notes of flint, cantaloupe and kiwi. Very balanced, minerals showing and tons of fruit coming through despite it being dry. Lovely now.

  • On the nose citrus and wet stone/minerality. And then everything seems to be at the right place: citrus, minerality, acidity and a pink grapefruit finish. This wine is good now but will improve over the next few years.

  • Voluptuous, decadent even, a very ripe and round citrus backbone; I thought it could be an Austrian wine or one from Alto Adige. Of course ('09) a bit too sweet. Altogether, don't miss a contact with this wine.

  • Glorious riesling. Petrol on the nose, with tingly, bracing acidity and minerality. Dry, with just a touch of sweetness on the finish to pair perfectly with a curry dish. One of my favorite whites of the year.

  • Elegant, stony nose, chalk. On the palate yellow fruit, lots of extract, passion, chalky, citrus. Great.

  • Dekantert 3 timer.

  • this needs another 5 years just for starters - full bodied yet elegant a rare combo full on long fine balance , acid perfect for the wine , not high acid by miles , a perfect natural sunshine vintage in 2009 were some of the greatest dry riesling was made , im still of the opinion this wine will do 25-40 years its so huge , The wine is complex almost acrobatic on the pallet like kellers 09 morstein grosses dry cru ace wine , trying to seek out this wine is dammed hard as its bought whenever it comes up any where! i mean just look on winesearcher , this is a cult wine proper decant 14-24 hours if drinking now -- but be warned it is far to young - give it another 5 years to get to the 98-100 score it is destined for sy b

  • Pure nose with pineapple, sitrus, hints of honey and minerals. Medium body. Long, complex finish with a sharp acidity. Quite elegant and subtile. Will probably improve for 5-6 more years.

  • Last of my bottles, and another excellent showing. Ripe peach and citrus fruit flavours over a bed of stones and mineral salts, with air bringing out more complex herbal and faint floral elements. Powerful and dry without ever feeling austere, and very well balanced.

  • Outstanding purity and mineral sense of place, immaculate style and balance, harmonious, ripe fruit with elegant acidity, hint of spontaneous fermentation aromas, clean flavours, effortless finesse, lovely length. To be enjoyed in its first decade.

Schäfer Fröhlich Felseneck 2009 GG (92-95),
    Christmann Idig 2009 GG (91)

the nose is a little bit closed, the palate is mouthfilling, fullbodied, vibrant acidity, more citrus notes than exotic fruits, in the finish fine pineapple notes, unripe fresh passionfruit, mineralic, at least 10 more years, the most potential now 92, in 5 years 95? or more

  • Occasional dinner group: Riesling GG and 100 RP point wines: Two possibilities; this is an off bottle, or the wine is in a dumb phase. Tropical fruits and minerals in the bouquet. Same on the palate but elegant and lean this time. By far not the 95 – 98 I scored this wine before. No score for tonight, but I have a few, so there will be a follow up.

  • White GG's and Red 100PP's (Restaurant Wereldmuseum, Rotterdam): Vegetal, animal nuances on the beautiful nose, intriguing, on the palate less so, tight lemon-apple cordial.

  • An absolutely stunning wine, the 2009 Felseneck GG is as magical tonight as it has been in the past. Certainly a massive and fully packed wine which still manages to keep playing nicely on a very elegant and fine tuned grand piano - elegance combined with power i.e. The nose exhibits rich lychee, lime and lemon zest accompanied by orange flowers and almost saline minerals. The palate is perfectly balanced with an eloquent acidity which is still well-behaved. The wine just keeps on clinging to the back end of the palate for what seems to be an eternity with a length on the finish lasting one minute or more and. A brutally good wine. A true masterpiece.

  • one of the greatest grosses g dry cru ever made -very great -and will cellar for another 40 years and iv drank g-max abtse morstein gg 09 by keller this wine is right up there with those in fact its possibly even greater than the keller abtse 09 and is similar to the keller morstein 09 - 09 is huge and full bodied the whole vintage in my opinion is a 1921 a 59 a 71 but bigger ground breaking oechsel esp in the TBA - if you can get this wine you are a lucky human being my advice it to either decant for 24 hours min or wait another 5 years its a masterpice of dry white wine making and may become a 100 point wine one day soon , as one taster gave it earlier on in its life !outstanding is a real cult wine right now

  • I first had this wine when Tim offered me a barrell tasting in July 2010 (don't tell the pradikat), and I have a vivid recollection of wild yeasts and a big swath of acid, despite the warmth of the vintage. I'm sure I've had since, but the showing last night was excellent. The wine has taken on considerable weight and richness, the yeastiness is all integrated, and the wine is quite balanced. It's in a wonderful place, perhaps not as filigreed as an 09 Keller but very much it's peer in a more powerful way. Gotta love this vineyeard and the great work that Tim is doing there....

  • A wonderful riesling which is gaining complexity and elegance by the hour. The nose first reveals the type of massive fruit which is so typical for this producer, but after a while strong tones of minerals and fresh oysters appear. They join the array of pear compote, lychee, citrus zest and wonderful elderflower. The palate is just as fascinating with a close to brilliant acidity and full-bodied mouth coating feeling. Simply amazing. It is clear that the secondary tones of oysters will get even more impressive in due course. A very nice wine and pure proof of master craftsmanship.

  • Leo's Blind Tasting Group - June '14 edition (Riverpark, NYC): The same flamboyantly spicy and floral scent as the '08 showed, but the fragrance here suggests something a little sweeter and more richly fruited. It certainly is riper with more richness on the palate, but again there's fantastic acidity and a vivid stony mineral base beneath.

  • Regular dinner group (@ PZ): Beautiful and complex bouquet with minerals and smoke. On the palate beautiful minerality, some sweetness beautifully balanced by the acidity. Very harmonious, very tasty and a great length. Sowing the first signs of aging which add to the complexity. Can last until well into the 2020’s or later.

  • Some wines w/ Salil & Chandra (Milford, CT): This was beautiful, ethereal and precise... yet still painfully young. Crisp apples, pears, mint, yeast and crushed stones. A bit of spritz on the palate. Wonderfully chiseled. The finish shimmers with an almost saline minerality. Lengthy, taut and delicious. Evolved nicely with air. Great future potential here.

  • No real development since the first bottle I had soon after release, but this is damn good all the same. Ripe white fruit and citrus flavours, some sponti yeast funk and florality and a vivid stony/saline mineral presence beneath, moderate power conveyed with great finesse and purity.

  • A stunning effort, the 2009 Felseneck GG boasts of dense minerals and lovely fruit approaching the nose as an array of lime and lemon zest, lychee, elderflower and intense Acacia honey. The palate is full-bodied and pays full respect to the elegant 'powerhouse algorithm' so meticulously calculated by star wine-maker Tim Fröhlich. Acidity and fruit are certainly intense but in perfect harmony and balance. Bravo!

  • An absolutely wonderful dry Nahe wine from the famous “Felseneck” vineyard (Bockenau), one of the very best Riesling vineyard sites in Germany (slate and quartzite soils), and produced by Tim Fröhlich, the renowned German winemaker. Beautiful, clear pale straw yellow color with a greenish glow and an amazingly complex bouquet of green apples, lemon zest, nectarine, elderberry blossom and abundant stony minerals. The palate follows through with impeccable balance and perfect harmony, revealing an enormous depth, generous stone and citrus fruit, the whole framed by an invigorating acidity and a strong mineral backbone. Beautiful, extremely long lingering finish. Already highly enjoyable now, but this wine will continue to develop for many years.

  • Monthly tasting club "The Tasting Club"; German Riesling Großes Gewächs (@ My place): Beautiful bouquet with flint stone minerals and beautiful citrus and tropical fruits. Same on the palate. The wine lost its extreme youthfulness and has become a bit more serious, but ooh, what is this a lovely and complex, clean wine.

  • An absolutely stunning wine, the 2009 Felseneck GG is just magical. Yes, this is one of the more massive and fully packed Rieslings around but it certainly plays on a very elegant and fine tuned grand piano. The nose is full of rich lime, lemon and lychee adjoined by lovely tones of orange zest and saline minerals. The palate is perfectly balanced but the acidity is very eloquent and certainly does not let the taste pass by without saying a cordial hello. The length on the finish lasts about one minute or more and the wine just keeps on clinging to the back end of the palate for what seems to be an eternity. A brutally good wine. A true masterpiece.

  • VinGilles Grosse Gewächse Tasting (Amsterdam): Much richer and riper than the Felseneck 2010 obviously, but without the stellar precision and linearity of that wine, impressive concentration and length, almost Burgundian weight, an essence of its terroir.

  • A wonderful wine! One of the best and most expressive Rieslings I have ever tasted. The 2009 Felseneck Grosses Gewächs has one of the most expressive and profound Riesling noses I have ever experienced. If is full of mature lemon zest, lime, lychee and after a while also creamy white flowers and tones of butter. The palate is full-bodied and perfectly integrated. The acidity speaks up more loudly than any other component, but when matched to Salma Salmon cheviche it gets nicely integrated and is certainly on par with the overall experience. There is no doubt this wine is to be considered a "monster Riesling", but it is meticulous wine-making and without doubt a grand experience!

  • Occasional dinner group; TOP Bordeaux 1999 (@ Two Michelin * Restaurant Boreas in Heeze, Netherlands.): See also my previous notes. Again a beautiful bottle loaded with minerals and smoke in a beautiful way. Concentrated, but also elegant with perfect crisp citrus and beautiful candy flavors. Still so young! 96++ for tonight. This will probably be beautiful all the way, but I should keep a few bottles to drink in the 2030's (or later).

  • Bordeaux 1999 overview (Restaurant Boreas, Heeze): Clean as a whistle. Wonderful nose, reticent on opening, showing seabreeze and matchstick. After extensive aeration more minerality and fruit show up, but still holding back. In fact, it seems to contribute to the elusive, mystique personality of this wine. While the palate is still clenched as a fist aromatically, the mouthfeel and structure has magnificant tension, massive but fine-grained concentration. Geez, is this good.. And geez, is this young. For now, 18.5/20

  • Truly world class quality! Packed with mineral, almost like shell fish on the nose. Bone dry, very intense, concentrated and oily. Very complex on the palate. Lots of mineral, stone fruits, citrus, and apples. Perfect acidity and balance. Super!

  • Open day 2 --- Light yellow with green shimmer --- Nose shy, minerality, some citrus notes, some herabl notes, sea breeze --- Plalate fresh, crisp, impressive body, dried apples, minerality, some herbs, unripe white peaches --- Finishes on minerality stream, citrus notes and fresh herbs. Overall I am not excited, suppose this vine is a bit closed right now. You feel GG quality in every sip while waiting for deliciousness in vain.

Open day 3 --- Yellow with a green shimmer --- Nose fresh, nice mix of minerality, citrus notes and herbs --- Palate softened, less crisp than yesterday, almost oily, citrus fruit, vegetable notes --- Finishes medium long on bark and minerality-citrus mix. 88pts

  • 1990 Barolo gathering at Henry K’s house with Baltimore winos (Henry's house in Baltimore): Incredibly mineral expression, sweetness without being sweet and spicy as in jalapeno. This wine is nicely focused and has the perfect precision.

  • Not decanted, which was a big mistake. Hard to assess other than the enourmous potential.

Day 2-3: aromas of pears, green apples, citrus (both lime and lemon) and stone/minerals.
Medium plus/high acidity, concentration and length.

  • First bottle from a six pack. Drunk about 1-2 hours after opening from burgundy glasses to allow this to take some air. Pale colour, crystal clear, leesy nose with grapefruit and minerals in abundance. To taste, lighter and less intense than anticipated though with good depth in a grapefruit profile. Minerals for sure on a moderate finish. Still very young and while this has real potential, a bit simple at this stage.

A.P. 7 713 041 29 10. This is my first Felseneck GG from Frohlich, first impression was ok, pretty accessible and not as tight as I thought (The 2009 Halenberg GG was disjointed and tight even after 3hrs of decanting). Complex notes of mineral, crushed stone, grapefruits and citrus on both nose and palate. Energetic, great balance. Finished dry and clean. I thought the intensity on the palate could be better though. 2hrs later: The aroma becomes less pungent and shows lovely purity and focus with complex mineral, gun flint, spices and white fruits. Crisp and bright on the palate but never come across as sharp. The transition from entry to finish is smooth. The wine has intensify on the mid palate and become creamier. Long clean finish and here the wine offers a touch of sweet yellow fruits which is really salivating. I believe the wine will be fully blossoming in day-2.

    Day-2
The aroma becomes even more expressive, slightly riper tone with ripe lemon and a hint of sweet honey at the core, all surrounded by perfumed lily scents. It getting rounder and better intensity on the palate and reveals more sweet lemony fruits with long, spicy infused finish. Yum!

  • This is a brilliant wine. I need to repeat 'goos-fraba' several times to calm myself from the pleasant and vivid attack of gooseberry, elderflower and crisp crystal clear minerals. After an hour in the glass a subtle lovely floral component emerges. The palate is full-bodied and so fully-packed it is breathtaking. Fruit, oak and acidity are perfectly integrated and melts together in a harmonious composition with acidity lingering on forever. I do not understand how anyone could not enjoy this effort. Bravo!

  • Impromptu tasting @ Peter Z. (Belgium): Enchanting fruity nose showing very pure and clean apricots and banana. Clear 'sponti'-nase of indigenous yeast-fermentation. Extremely long and weighty finish. Could use some extra depth and complexity at the moment, but this is an absolute world class dry Riesling. 18.5/20

  • Wild stuff. The aromatics here aren't too different from the Felseneck Spätlese; really exotic and opulent with bright floral-tinged white fruited flavours and that sponti-yeast funk the S-F wines always seem to show in their youth. In the mouth it's all about minerality; vividly stony and salty with floral touches and fresh citrus fruit flavours emerging with some air. Very ripe, rich and powerful, particularly compared to the '08, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops with some age.

  • Although this wine has been receiving extraordinary praise and 100 scores in a row, on day 1 this wine showed a lot of potential but was not a great wine to drink. Yeast and vegetable notes were predominant, on the palate vibrant but lacking focus. Let us wait for day 2.

  • Dreamtasting #1 (Restaurant Le Défi, Sprang-Capelle): This wine gathers raving reports in my tasting group and they claim that this is the best young (newly released) wine they ever tasted. So consequently we all bought some... Today was my first, blinded, encounter with this "soon to be legendary Riesling" (certainly not my last) and I must admit: this really is something! Of course, it is still an infant but it has 'thoroughbred' written all over it. Bouquet is the essence of Riesling, proudly showing citrus fruit, apples, pears and stony minerality. The architecture, structure and stuffing of this youngster is already very impressive. Sense of sweetness is perfect for a dry wine: it's not perceptible as sweetness but only rounds off the gentle and perfectly ripe acidity. This is a total Masterpiece and will probably be at its best in 2- 4 years time, but will easily keep for 10. For now 18.5/20, destined to gain in rating.

Smoky aroma, vuursteen, minerale zwavel, compleet assortiment aan fruit waaronder citrusfruit, steenfruit en fris-zurig tropisch fruit waaronder limoen.
Mondvullend, fris en filmend. Enorme lengte en dikte. Dik-sappig en ongekend zuiver.
