Some Wine Tasted Watching the Chicago Air & Water Show (Chicago, IL): Walk around tasting. Almost identical to when last tasted at this same event in 2019, just slightly less sweet. Floral start with spice, peach and tropical hints. Still moderately sweet but also so bright, making this a charming food wine. Good+ length.

Had this bottle I purchased in 2011 from an auction house last night. 8% ABV!! Was concerned a little about potential storage since it was purchased at auction and I moved around several times but upon opening it had a beautiful floral nose that to me smelled a little like a combination of lemon zest and peaches. No significant petrol notes that I often get with some older Rieslings. Still fresh and could have lasted many more years potentially decades. Enjoyed it with friends at a terrific wine party and the most of the bottle was quickly consumed. Saved a tiny bit for a second day revisit. My only bottle of this vintage and it was a terrific drinking experience.

not blind As many 2004 Rieslings still in great shape. Not that big as the GG Hermannshöhle but would be nice to drink them together. Still fruit aromas. No petrol, still cracking acidity but even it is dry too sweet in my opinion. 92

Stored in a cellar reaching up to 19°C in summer and with minimum temperatures at approx. 15°C. So this is not stored at textbook conditions. Cork soaked to 80%. Medium golden colour without any hint of amber or orange tints and hues. Pretty fruity nose and first quite onedimensionel, but with time and higher temperatures adding more and more nuances and new scents: tropical fruits in different shades like a mixture or chord of lemon, mangos passionfruits, peaches, green banana, but also a bit like cherry gums sometimes, cream, vanilla. At first even on the palate shy and even a bit thin. The sweetness is largely shed and the acidity is refreshing and easily keeps everything together. But with time this gets more depht and lenght. Quite a lot more! Developing some mineral and spice scents. All in all this has a lot of play. But one has to be focused on this. Nothing to pair with food or other amusement except tasting and smelling, at least if you want to experience all this has to give. This is not about power or intensity, but about elegance. Nevertheless this is not more than being rather outstanding or if you are scoring very very strict, excellent. And don't make a mistake: This is not young! This is fully mature and some of the not perfectly stored bottles maybe are in slow decline. This is still pretty young, takes a while to uncoil, lovely balanced Spatlese, does not drink like trying to be Auslese, cool mineral notes under citrus fruit, ginger accents. A-

Method: 46 degrees; white wine glass (pop and pour and then over a couple of hours)
Look: deep yellow; no legs
Nose: gentle petrol, ginger, lemon, beeswax, faint white flower, touch of minerality
Palate: petrol, bold salinity, Meyer lemon, some cinnamon, sour pineapple... to slate, thai basil; very long finish of petrol, salt, cinnamon, and sour lemon; medium- body; medium+ acid; medium- sweetness
Overall Thoughts: Wonderfully balanced, although not quite as much tension as some of the more thrilling Rieslings I've had. Great flavor, complex and has a 2 - 3 layers of flavor that reveal themselves over time. It's great, but doesn't have quite enough "wow" factor or the flavor profile to get into "excellent" territory for me.
Also, it's still got very nice acid and is no where close to done/flabby (although, the fruit and sweetness seem to be receding)

Glass: Zalto Universal Popped and poured, drunk over two days. Clear, medium, glowing golden-amber color. Clean, medium intense, fully developed nose. Unfortunately, with some slight oxidative notes that shined through a otherwise fresh nose with great mineral notes, yellow fruit and spices. Dense and classic Hermannshöhle. Medium-sweet with a great, medium+ (almost racy), ripe and wonderfully integrated acidity. Only 8% abv. On the palate almost like the nose: Wonderful intense mineral core, grapefruit, citrus, ripe yellow fruit, but also some oxidative notes. Beautiful tension and depth, juicy and lovely to drink. Long, fine and lingering finish. Usually 94+, but due to the oxidative notes around 91-92.

Deep yellow peach, ripe, hint of mango and passion fruit, deep mid of sweet peach, pear, custard, lemon custard toward the back, softer but with great mineral hiding beneath. Showing a bit of red berry, right before a long mirabelle and mineral finish. Sooo good but needs more time.
Full yellow color. Honey and a fascinating array of apple and cherry aromas. Relatively full bodied, moderately sweet. The same fruits on the attack and then late, tangy tropical guava with a burst of acidity on the back end. Rich wine, not terribly mineral, but the quality and depth of the fruit are formidable at 15 years of age.

Glass: Zalto Universal Drunk over three days. I had some high hopes after having a fantastic Kischheck Spätlese from the same vintage. Perfect bottle and fill level. Clear, medium glowing golden-amber color. Clean, medium intense, fully developing nose driven by botrytis. Ripe apricot, herbs, honey, some citrus, mineral notes and some signs of maturity. Nice, but not overwhelming. On the palate off-dry, medium+ acidity, 8% abv. Quite fresh and airy, but a bit too much botrytis IMHO. Beautiful mineral core, ripe apricot, herbs. Good tension and depth. Medium+ length. Will stay on this level for quite a while, but I doubt that it gets any better. 90-91

Another round at Jade Court (Chicago, IL): #10-05, 8% abv. This was bought on release and cellared since -- and the brilliant provenance of this bottle shows. It's everything this wine ought to be, and more. Most importantly is the characteristic ethereal quality is here in spades. There's plenty of rounded acidity (if that makes sense at all) and a mild sensation of sweetness, but it's all balanced out and there's nothing that unduly sticks out. It's just a refined, delicate bottle of riesling and this bottle in particular really reminds me why I give a damn in the first place.
At Adrian's Hermannshoehle tasting. My favorite of the vertical - a ripeness that puts this perfectly into Spätlese territory, rather than making this a mini-Auslese. Such clarity and freshness to the fruit with gentle herbal, mineral, and floral accents, and the beginning of maturing smokiness. All elegance.

Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese mini vertical (Chicago, IL): #10-05, 8% abv. This is a bottle on the lighter end of the stylistic spectrum, which would be expected from the vintage as well. However, it's showing excellently right now. There's a slight herbal edge to this, but lovely stone fruit flavours on the nose. The palate is lighter and more racy than the broad-shouldered 2005, and the minerality and acidity seem to be highlighted a little bit more. A wine that's very light on its feet but has far more than you immediately notice. Very classic and stylistically correct spätlese.

Riesling tasting with good friends in my home. Mostly German - 5xGG, 1xkab, 4xspat and 1xBA. This was by far the most refined, complex, and most harmoniously balanced of the spatlese. No petrol notes. Im actually beginning to prefer that in aged riesling ans take it as a positive quality. This wine is very close to perfection for its categori and age. Give it five more years and Im sure it will pass 95 pt mark

Pop and pour. In the glass, rich yellow-gold with a faint hint of orange. On the nose, apricots. On the palate, a hypothetical blend of grapefruits and mangoes, with a pleasantly smooth if not quite silky texture and a long finish. Nice, but missing some of the energy and complexity I was expecting.

Lovely pale yellow with green tints. Pretty aromas of white fruit, some citrus, and minerals, just a little hydrocarbon and just a little spice. Medium/light bodied seamless wine light on its its feet and long with marked sweetness offset by a mouth-watering acid spine so that it worked as a food wine. Very good.

A footy geeks Sunday Evening (UrbanBelly, Chicago IL): Nose: This was exquisite from the word go with green apples, pears, white fruits, quince, floral notes, and a real nice underlying minerality. There is excellent depth and class to the nose as well with pitch perfect balance.
Taste: Medium bodied with racy medium+ acidity. The feel has a fatness to it, but it's more that it fills out as it goes across the palate with green apples, white fruits, quince, floral notes, a hint of petrol with a mineral base.
Overall: This was fantastic. The color is still on the lighter side and it really feels like it can develop much further and provide even more enjoyment.

Great wines at Lake Lanier (Gainesville, GA): Bright green and youthful appearance; tons of candied lime, on the entry it is more like lime soda with the acidic fireworks going off on your tongue, expansive on the palate but very tidy, initially the lime was complimented by candied ginger and vanilla cream but after a while the intense minerality echoed strongly in the wine but always buffered by great fruit, sweet but very refreshing; top notch but the only reason this was not brilliant was the lack of a great mid-palate; drinking really well now but should continue to age well for a long time; brilliant winemaking; wish I could have had this with the fried oysters and grouper at the restaurant.

Awesome again. Starting to show some development now; there's still a spectrum of youthful Riesling fruit with bright spicy, floral and minerally accents, but this bottle's also showing some smoky and fusel notes emerging around the primary flavours. The balance is outstanding with moderate sweetness, bright acidity beneath and that typical Dönnhoff sense of lightness and presence.

Wine from my LA Vacation; 7/23/2011-7/31/2011 (Los Angeles): Consumed at the Hollywood Bowl. Gold/green in color. The nose is great with pineapple, minerals and just a bit of petrol. Lush viscous texture. Sweet but still enough acidity to drink well on a warm summer evening. Nice minerality but more tropical fruit than I might have expected. The finish is perhaps sweeter than I would prefer. Still, a great wine that is still youthful.

Sparkling clarity, light yellowy green colour. Nose showing some melon, pear and for some reason in my mind mandarin! There's also an undertone of honeysuckle and wet slate. Palate is light in weight but not intensity, a teasing sweetness and balanced acidity and an incredibly long finish. Could do with a little more of the mineral slate hinted at on the nose if I'm being uber critical, but very pleased I've 11 to go!

Michel & Alain Roux Dinner (Gordon Grill, Goodwood Park Hotel): An excellent bottle of wine, but not one of Donnhoff's best efforts - probably a little out of its drinking window as well. It was all a sharp around the edges at first, and took quite a while to calm down. The edginess never quite dissipated though. Green gold in colour, nose was beautifully complex - musk, a tiniest bit of fresh mushroom, sweet, high-toned fruit - we noted passion fruit and, when a little warmer, tangerine and then apricots and just the smallest trickle of petroleum. Palate was yummy, a bit sharp on the acid at the start, but with nice, rich and rather powerful (for 2004 at least) flavours of mango, apricot, fleshy longan on the mid-palate and a citrusy tangerine punch at the finsih. Again, a touch of fizz and some spiky acid that took a bit of time to meld together here, but boy it finished with punchy fruit, great grip and structure. Lovely, but I am going to hold off opening the next bottle for some time yet.

Chicago Wine Geeks do German Rieslings (Hyde Park, IL): Light straw in color. Complex nose of white fruit, tropical notes and spice. Palate is noticeably less complex then the aromas. Spritzy and youthful --- primary, ripe and rich white fruits. Long through the finish --- loads of potential here.

German Rieslings in Hyde Park (Chicago): Later in the tasting=shorter notes. Great nose of cherries, limes, everything you could want. The palate was kind of a shock after the two '98s though. Yes, it's a great balancing act of sweetness and acidity, but the lack of integration causes it to seem clumsy after the more smoothed-out impressions of the older wines. Coming back to this later at a warmer temperature it shows its class. It is an amazingly complex wine on the nose, palate, and especially the finish and has the characteristic mouthfeel of Dönnhoff: intensity of flavor conveyed so effortlessly. It reminds me of how Roger Federer plays tennis.

Glass: Zalto Universal
Popped and poured, drunk over two days.

Drunk over three days.

This wine is very close to perfection for its categori and age. Give it five more years and Im sure it will pass 95 pt mark

Medium/light bodied seamless wine light on its its feet and long with marked sweetness offset by a mouth-watering acid spine so that it worked as a food wine. Very good.

Starting to show some development now; there's still a spectrum of youthful Riesling fruit with bright spicy, floral and minerally accents, but this bottle's also showing some smoky and fusel notes emerging around the primary flavours.
