The nose is quite light with bright red fruit, roses, and red cherries. High acidity with tart red fruit, good structure but integrated tannins, some earthy notes, forest floor, and strawberry on the palate. Long finish. Excellent wine and much brighter compared to the 96 next to it, although also not quite as balanced or complex.

Needs a bit of air to show best, but this bottle seems to be drinking at peak right now. Not sure this has the legs to improve for the very long haul, but its drinking really well today.

Barolo doesn't get much better than this. Iconic winery, old school producer (now deceased), fantastic vintage, and special bottling (Riserva). Bottle was well stored, popped 2 hours before decanting (per CT user advice), then decanted for 1 hour, poured and then..... the magic happened. Consumed at Carmine's in Bellevue with Felix and Elizabeth. This score is consistent with the two bottles i have opened previously (2017, 2019). Can not say enough about this producer. Wish I had more.....

Outstanding work by Giacosa in 2000 to harness the warmth of the vintage to create a classic wine with such longevity. More depth and harmony than the also very good Asili Riserva tasted side by side. Right in the middle of a peak window.

Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VIII (Chicago, IL): #0167. Opened at 8am, decanted for 45 minutes at 4pm. Beautiful, nascently mature nebbiolo with a decent mouthful of tannin still. The fruit is a mix of red and black and for my taste, this has much more breadth and power than the arguably more elegant Asili. But I liked this wine for its overt power and stature, even though I'm certain there's more upside with age.

My first time tasting 00' riserva, and it certainly delivers! Delicate and pretty with excellent concentration, and ultra polished sweet red fruit. So fresh and aromatic, smells like roses and licorice. So good!

Decanted for about and hour and drank over two more. This is in a lovely spot but certainly would reward another 5-10 years or more of cellar time. Bold aromatics wafted from the glass , earth, anise, candied cherry to plum, plus earth. Mid-weight and velvety with a nice underlying current of juicy tannins and bright acidity to balance things nicely. Complex and complete, it had a restrained power that drive to a long satisfying finish. Not classic like the ‘01 but more satisfying and ready to roll now. Crack one, if you have one!

Seventeenth Annual White Truffle Dinner (Hughes House - Chicago IL): My fav of the Giacosa flight. Dense red cherry with good concentration and overall wonderful balance with lots of fruit, earth, spice, rose, and more. Not powerful, but very engaging. This is typically my favorite plateau for Piedmont wines.

Four hour decant. Served with rack of lamb and Gorgonzola risotto. Kyle said 97. We disagreed on the palate. This is remarkable. The color is like a tawny port. It glistens. We could look at it all night. The nose has classic Italian age. Menthol, iron, light dust. Red fruit. Energic and alive. Impresses across the entire palate. High acidity at the mid palate. Drying tannins at the back. Amazing level of tannin for the age and color. Does not look dense enough for these tannins. Chenille texture. Body is deceiving. Drinks light at first glance and then gains weight throughout the super long finish. This goes on far beyond one minute, two minutes…super happy with this bottle.

Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VII (Chicago, IL): No. 2194. While I think the 2001 Rabajà was the better wine, this was the bottle that drank better tonight. This was exuberant and effusive with lots of ripe, sweet red cherry notes on the nose and palate. Crystalline, pure expression of fruit, with very little to distract from it. Texturally, this was almost flawless with silky tannins very much on their way to resolution. Easy going and drinking so well now, but unlikely to become one of the truly great red labels.

Mostly Giacosa dinner (RPM Italian, Washington D.C.): Expressive nose displaying concentrated red and black fruit, blackberry, cherry pie, dry cherry, licorice, tar, spicy spices and iron. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated red and black fruit, sweet, dense and deeply toned, medium acidity, strong mineral, and a long concentrated red and black fruit driven finish with licorice at the end. This is more concentrated than the Asili. Although still very youthful, it is drinking nicely.

Sixteenth Annual White Truffle Dinner (Inovasi - Lake Bluff IL): In mid-aged Giacosa red label flight. All decanted 5 hours in advance. Dense with good concentration, all in good harmony. Not quite up to the quality level of previous bottles, with less nuance vs previous bottles.

Very pretty and open-knit in the softer style of the vintage. This didn't have the depth or intensity of the '01 drunk alongside but was more ready. Very refined texture with wonderful flavors of tar and roses which lead to a smooth, complex finish. Hard to stop drinking this! At Ai Fiori.

Neb Vinous Bring a Great Barolo (Il Buco, NYC): [Pop & pour. This was a delightful surprise. Marc was concerned that the 2001 Cappellano Rupestris he brought was corked, so he brought this as a back-up bottle. The Rupestris was corked, so he opened this.] Ethereal nose of red fruit and baking spice. Expansive, silky, just gorgeous. Showing really well for a pop and pour. Not near its peak, but very enjoyable right now. 95-97

Stunning bottle. Decanted hours before drinking, but a small glass on the table to follow this wine. It was fruity and open from the beginning, the small berries so typical for Giacosa (and great wines in general). Yet it climbed to an even higher level over the next hours. Really lovely wine, kaleidoscopic, complex, seductive. I love it.

Drunk with 2000 Vietti Brunate (all correct, 91 pts, no wow) and 2000 G. Mascarello Monprivato (funky in a TCA way, NR), this was sheer elegance. Like all of the finest wines, notable for its utter harmony and lack of angularities. This was the man in the tuxedo looking born to wear it. Only thing lacking was that glowing core you find at at age 30+ in LRC and La Tache. Will try again in about 5 years, accompanied by 2000 G. Conterno Francia & 2000 B. Mascarello, which should give it a run.

Giacosa's 2000 Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba is positively electric tonight with a perfumed nose of sweet cherry, cranberry, fig paste, and balsamic tones. Elegant on the palate with fine-grained tannins and bright acidity that lends a litheness and vibrancy to the red & dark fruit flavors that offer excellent persistence. Really good and in the zone.

From magnum. In a tasting of Barolos from B. Giacosa, G. Mascarello, A. Conterno, G. Conterno, Roagna, Anselma, and more. OK, this is just impressive. You get all you expect here: tar/asphalt, cherries, smoke, tobacco, and some spices (rosemary?). The nose is just followed seamlessly in the mouth: sweet cherry fruit verging towards darker and sweeter fruits like plums and blackberries; fine-grained tannins that just coate the mouth, high acidity (just perfect), channeling into a sweet, long afertaste. The aftertaste is a bit heavy reminding me of dried prunes and a bit cooked fruit. Apart from that it is not much to criticize here, except: where are the roses?

Few wines are so elegant. Roses on the nose then delicate but delineated flavors of framboise, strawberries, roses, with smoky anise on the finish. A wine of purity and depth. No one makes Barolo like Giacosa. Bricking throughout. Probably at its best now, but the acidity will keep it fresh for years to come.

At Wolfgang (SG). Decanted and drank over 2.5 hours. Clear medium ruby. Slight bricking on the rim. On the nose: Red cherry, dark cherry, rose petal, savoury brush, mature tobacco and leafy herbs. On the palate, this had high acidity, medium+/full body, pronounced flavour intensity of (somewhat tart) cherry, strawberry, rose and tar. High firm tannins, long finish. Very nice. An impressively elegant and supple mouthfeel. While the fruit was clearly there, it did not feel all that ripe. Still, this was short of mind-blowing. Perhaps it needs even more time to further integrate and soften?
Stunning bottle of Barolo! Tasted blind I was fooled for relatively young Cabernet at first. (Shame shame shame). But it says more about the wine than the guess (I think).
The nose is fresh red fruit, tar, anise, forrest floor and tobacco. Superb fruit, great acidity and lovely balance! Extremely high acidity and freshness. Fantastic length. And the tannins are firm but soft.
Could easily live another 10 or 20 year.
This is Barolo on a whole other level. Buy buy buy!
Chassagne, Red Label and Chave (S.K.Y.): Full nose that is more mature with strawberry and emerging balsamic notes. Palate is full with round and fleshy fruit. Appealing and with a degree of completeness. Perhaps a bit of upside from here.

A delicate Garnett colored Barolo with hauntingly beautiful notes of Musky Italian earth,Barnyard, Forest floor, cherry, rose petal, leather, raspberry, anise and light cranberry. Very light and almost Pinot esque in personality like a great vintage burgundy. Decanted 2 hrs. Drink now- 2030.

I'm not sure if this bottle is in a dumb stage. The nose initially is tarry and leafy with some spice which's not too sweet. Slowly more fruit emerges, with tea leaves and maybe a bit of licorice. But the complexity and intensity is no match for a white label Falletto 1997 I drank recently.
Texture wise it's elegant and not that concentrated, and borders on ethereal. length is good, not great. I based my score more on the palate.
Interestingly enough it's a medium+ intensity, medium+ body wine, so quite different from the other notes here. The owner opened 3 hours before the dinner, took a 1+ hour train, and poured a little bit and let the wine breathe. I let the wine develop in my glass for quite some time, but still it's not very giving . Maybe it's simply not enough.

This wine showed very well last night, after 2 hours of decant. It's truly a special Barolo that was made to age. I will save the remaining bottle for 10 years hence.... Thinking by that time, it should be at the peak - maybe.

This is the best Barolo I have ever had in my 30 years of tasting wine. Gave it 5 hour decant, still exhibited a youth full nose of bright cherry, elegant mushroom, intergraded dark field berries. Palate is reserved of same but very balanced in acid, tannins, and fruit. Had with a grilled veal chop which showed off the wine’s true expression. Drank over 2 hours, and every taste was better than the last. A total epiphany of a great wine-this is why I collect wine!

Eric's visit to DC - Champagne, White Burgundy, Rhone, Piedmont and etc. (Officina - Washington D.C.): Youthful expressive nose displaying concentrated ripe red fruit, cherry pie, dry cherry, blackberry jam, licorice, ink, tar, rose, dark spices, leather and strong iron. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated red fruit with a hint of black, unctuous and warm, medium acidity, strong iron mineral, still noticeable tannins and a long concentrated sweet red fruit driven finish with rose and dark spices at the end. This seems more concentrated and masculine than the last bottle from May. It is drinking beautifully with ample fruit but can improve for another decade or two. It is at the similar stage of development as the 00 Monfortino that is served next. Excellent showing.

Decanted for 7 hours before serving. The first pour was still initially tight with lots of substance. After another 30 mins, it has evolved into a super silky and elegant burgundian style barolo. Very smoothe with an open knit core. Beautiful wine. 94+

Iconic bottles: Barolo & Barbaresco Tasting (Maialino, NYC Lexington and 21st): The 2000 Falletto was stunning in it’s open-knit style and vibrant persona. The nose was layered, dark and sweetly spiced, with a lifting mix of tart cherry, cranberry, exotic florals, and sweet herbs, as balancing notes of animal musk and undergrowth emerged over time. On the palate, I found a silky-soft expression with floral tart cherry, energized by zesty acidity, giving way to dark minerality and inner rose. The finish was long, as grippy tannins emerged, offset by juicy cherry with hints of citrus and spice. Simply gorgeous.

Decanted for six hours before dinner, which I believe served it well, even as the last sips were the most complex and rewarding. Slightly roasted red fruit, cherries mainly, with a subtle interplay of rose, spice, leather and a faint whiff of iodine. Lovely texture: delicate yet firmly tannic, silky and elegant. Deceptively easy to sip, but so much complexity rewarded lingering over a glass. A fabulous wine.

Les Deux 2018 (Chez Gill): Final flight, third wine. One of the wines of the tasting for me. Just a stunning wine, showing breed and class. The nose is just beautiful classic barolo, still showing good fruit with blood orange and a tarry note. Beautifully perfumed...words don't do it justice...you can just sit and get lost in the nose on this wine. On the palate, the acidity is on point, and a good mix of secondary and fruit; follows the nose with great texture and just fantastically elegant. This was unbelievably good and has years of evolution left in it...

Nose: The nose is deep, extremely perfumed, and filled with red cherries, red berries, licorice, violets, rose petals, raspberries, juniper notes, leather, roasted herbs, currants, and a touch of iodine. The nose is enveloping with a sense of refinement and a whole lot of poise.
Taste: Full bodied with high acidity and high tannins. The structure is perfectly integrated at this point with the tannins showing off a good bit of youth to them still. The feel shows an immense amount of depth and polish with red cherries, raspberries, licorice, violets, roasted herbs, iodine, and some leather.
Overall: This is utterly gorgeous right now. The warmer fruit of the vintage shines through and allows this to be fairly accessible with a sense of largeness and refinement. This showed better in the decanter versus the half that was left in the bottle, so if one is opening it, they should make sure to give this a few hours to rev it up.

Giacosa weekend - dinner at Masseria (Masseria, DC): Surprisingly round nose displaying sweet red fruit, strawberry jam, cherry, dry cherry, a hint of blackberry, fruit cake, tar, licorice, rose, sweet spices and iron/mineral. Very sophisticate palate, silky and polished, very finely layered subtle sweet red fruit, medium acidity, strong mineral presence, noticeable but very fine tannins and a long subtle red fruit driven finish with iron at the end. There is also lingering rose which is captivating. The overall impression is deceptively soft and elegant but there is gripping but very fine tannins that hits you as an afterthought, an iron fist in velvet glove. Wonderful showing, a classic, “user friendly and very Burgundian”, Giacosa.

Had this tonight side by side with a red Asili which was drinking on point. The RdF on the other hand seemed in a considerable less developed stage of it's evolution. A powerful wine with deep dark fruit notes and a surprising amount of wood aromas still present. There is lots going on here and we did not pre decant but got to sip it over a good 3+ hrs and finished it off the following evening. There is a good amount of tannin lurking but also some very good structure and material to warrant a long evolution. impressive finish but this still requires patience -give it at least 3-4 years at which point i would expect my score to be a few points higher.

A Study of Falletto di Serralunga (La Pizza Fresca): The bouquet was dark and seductive with ripe black cherry giving way to sweet herbs, classic Giacosa spices and undergrowth. On the palate, I found soft textures with brisk acidity and fine tannins that were nearly imperceptible beneath the wave of floral-laced ripe red fruit that followed. There was an unctuous feel here, which coated the senses with a velvety mix of cherry and spice, which seemed to melt away through the finish, revealing minerals and saturating fine tannin. This is one of the most balanced and enjoyable wines I’ve ever tasted from this vintage.

A wine of immense power, with sweet cherry and minty balsam on the nose. Soft but slightly drying tannins. The 2000 Riserva Rocche del Falletto is big and forceful but doesn't come across as ripe as I expected. Not sure how this will age. (From magnum)

Brown throughout, but fresh and delicious. This wine is brown not because it is old, it is brown because it wants to be brown. Will age for years. Aroma of plums, tastes of strawberries and licorice, candied flavors, complex and lingering. Decanted two hours and needs it.

Gala Dinner at La Festa del Barolo (Del Posto Restaurant, NYC): Seriously? Where did this magnum come from. Far be it for me to look a gift Giacosa in the mouth when I can pour in my mouth! Tar and rose. Still young and tannic, with tons of black fruit and a hint of the classic fruitcake. Obviously a great wine, even this late in the evening.

A beautiful inviting nose. Roses, spice and tar. A decadent and enveloping nose. For me Giacosa wines are often enticing/ intriguing wines that will draw you in, but this wine is one that comes right at you. A rich and opulent texture, but with uncanny poise, grace, and impeccable balance with no sense of heat or fatness. I am no lover of hedonistic wines, and I know some people do not love the 2000 red labels, but for my pure passive pleasure, these are terrific, youthfully vibrant, supple, gorgeous wines, being guilty of only deliciousness. 97

The ‘00 Rocche was simply seductive with an alluring bouquet and enveloping on the palate. Here I found a dark and inviting mix of crushed cherry and strawberry with sweet spices. On the palate, soft textures gave way to floral-infused cherry, as hints of leather and earth tones filled the senses. The finish was long with a yin-and-yang of sweet red fruits and a bitter twang of spice and herbs. Although this came across as a bit roasted, it was still so easy to like.

Eleventh Annual White Truffle Dinner (Chez Weber - Chicago IL): Open and decanted 4+ hours before serving. Black cherry throughout with dried herbs, black pepper, anise. Lots of dried rose petals. Moderate structure. Very elegant. Easily the most pleasurable wine in the flight, even if it doesn't have the concentration and long-term (30 year) potential of the 1996 or 2001.

Slow ox'ed 6 hours prior. This was tannic and closed from the beginning and really never opened up. On the palate there was a lingering floral bouquet with some leather. But this was decidedly tannic and red fruited vs the last bottle I tried from a different source which was black fruited and soft. Almost like 2 completely different wines. Tonight's showing would suggest 10-20 years for this to open up.

Opened at 12pm, consumed at 6pm. It just never really opened up. If you swirled it in your mouth you get that tar, red fruit and tannins, but it was really tight on the nose and on the palate. Just not much going on at the moment.

Decanted and sampled over three and a half hours. Medium garnet with some ruby highlights. Imploded nose for a hour then scents of violets, stone, moca, tar, black fruits. First sips showed surprising amounts of oak and astringency on the palate but after 90 minutes this melted away revealing pure, fresh layers of concentrated plum and strawberry fruit buoyed by energetic acidity almost hovering on the tongue. Lots of tar, earth, and leather notes also. Stern, tannic structure balanced by all that fruit. Long, dense finish of blackberry, strawberry, tar, and earth. Very impressive and young. These are aristocratic wines.

Huge floral notes with lots of red cherry. Seemed very Burgundian to me on the nose, but then completely Piedmont on the palate, with that same red cherry with plenty of anise and meaty spice. Long and powerful with lots of elegant structure contributing to an expanding finish. Good now, better a decade from now, probably much better in two decades.

Much more forward and opulent than its drinking partner that evening ('91 Gentaz). Hugely perfumed and with the supple forwardness of 2000. There's tar, menthol, and roses, and a richness without any sense of heaviness. This wine comes at you and just gives a ton of pleasure, and while very layered and complex it is still very friendly and approachable, giving you the ability to both analyze as much as just sit back and enjoy the ride. This may not knock the socks of a purist, but this is just beautiful wine that is easy to love. Early peak for me. A fleshy, beautiful wine that has great character and depth, giving a lot and with plenty in reserve. Beautiful stuff. 97 pts

Best Bottle Dinner at my place. My friend’s wine of the night, my second favourite to the Ornellaia 1999. We drank the Giacosa Le Rocche del Falletto Riserva 2000 (Bottle #3502) next to a bottle of Pianpolvere Soprano Bussia Riserva 7 Anni 2000. The Giacosa was medium garnet in colour, turning orange/brown at the edges. It offered an elegant nose of rose petals, violets, cherry, hey, herbs and black tealeaves. On the palate the medium- to light-bodied wine showed cherry, rose water, hey, milk chocolate, a hint of tobacco, black tea and herbal tea, paired with medium-plus acidity and perfectly integrated high dry, ultra-fine tannin that reminded of shredded bitter chocolate. The wine kept changing slowly as the hours passed. The medium- to light-bodied Barolo was very, very elegant and seemed almost weightless on the palate. A truly great Barolo!
Compared to the Pianpolvere Soprano Bussia Riserva 7 Anni 2000 the Giacosa Le Rocche del Falletto Riserva 2000 was the much more elegant and more “intellectual” wine and will be much longer-lingered lived, whereas the Pianpolvere was more developed, fuller-bodied and more “forward” (but by no means simplistic), showed great concentration and provided great drinking pleasure.

Drank over 6 hours at home. A beautiful maturing bottle of Barolo. A wine of elegance rather than power. Pretty, but reserved, nose of dried roses, a touch of spice, red fruit and a hint of earth. Light in the mouth with fine tannins adding just the right amount of grip an structure. Lots of dried flowers and fruit. Hint of cinnamon every now and then. Long lingering finish. Probably the most elegant Barolo I have ever tasted

Drunk alongside 2000 burgundies. A more reserved expression of Barolo, firmer structure than the burgundies and a little dryer. Not the road kill and tar of a robust Barolo, rather it has very fine tannins with lovely florals, mineral elements, and great persistence and length, very elegant.

I was surprised by this wine since it wAs my first falletto. Light ruby red much more like a burgundy than I would have thought. Wonderful bouquet with a complex and vibrant burst of red berry flavors. Seemed a bit acidic and tannic still which I expect was a result of early opening and only a half hour of decanting. I think this needs some more time to live up to it's high rating. Maybe in a few more years after the acidity is resolved. Make sure to decant a few hours on the next bottle.

Wow. Usually these wines are very tannic and backward in their youth and they take hours to open up. But while shy initially, this bottle blossomed after 30 minutes and the fruit was more and more luscious -- we thought we had a California fruit bomb. Scrumptious!

2004 WS Wine Experience" 2000 Barolos (Hyatt Regency, Chicago): Represented on the dais by "Il Maestro" himself, Bruno Giacosa. James Suckling said that this was a historic occasion, since Bruno very rarely even leaves his property. His trip to Chicago was front page news in Piedmont. Bruno said that his 2000 Riserva is the best that a great wine from Barolo can be. It should provide good pleasure while young and after being cellared for 15 years". Aged 3 years in big vats. Unfiltered and unfined. It will not be released for another 1.5 years (spring of 2006). Smells like a fine Bordeaux - pencil lead, cassis, earth. Superb structure, intense bouquet, and a firm body. Very classical style. JS said that "this wine is the veritable blonde bombshell and I rated it 100 points. It is at its best 2-3 days after opening." 900 cases. $169.

Bien que l'acidité demeure, le vin semble se refermer sur des notes tertiaires un peu austère.
On aime bien le pruneau et le vieux cuir qui dominent, mais il y a des notes de feuilles mortes qui éteignent un peu le vin sur la longueur.

I love it.

Only thing lacking was that glowing core you find at at age 30+ in LRC and La Tache. Will try again in about 5 years, accompanied by 2000 G. Conterno Francia & 2000 B.

Tasted blind I was fooled for relatively young Cabernet at first. (Shame shame shame). But it says more about the wine than the guess (I think).
The nose is fresh red fruit, tar, anise, forrest floor and tobacco.
Superb fruit, great acidity and lovely balance! Extremely high acidity and freshness. Fantastic length. And the tannins are firm but soft.
Could easily live another 10 or 20 year.

Saturday with Some Charmers: Salon, Roulot, PYCM, Giacosa Riservas: This had a distinct and more unique nose than the others. Lots of earth, leather, wonderful meatiness, cooling menthol. Very very smooth. May not last long but so delicious and expressive right now.

Gala Dinner at Antonio Galloni's La Festa del Barolo (Four Seasons Restaurant, NYC): Magnum brought by Kelly. Just stunning. Ripe red fruit nose. Sweet fruit on the palate. Long penetrating, ripe, complex. Certainly one of the best wines of the vintage.

Slight earthiness on the nose and palate. Mushroom, black cherry skins, hints of tar and menthol, and a beam of acidity. Rich texture that is at the same time focused. Everything is in beautiful balance.
Tasted at Pinot Provence in a 2000 Barolo tasting.

Huge floral notes with lots of red cherry. Seemed very Burgundian to me on the nose, but then completely Piedmont on the palate, with that same red cherry with plenty of anise and meaty spice. Long and powerful with lots of elegant structure contributing to an expanding finish. Good now, better a decade from now, probably much better in two decades.

another stunning bottle. We saved half of this for day two. Much more red fruit and less tar on day two. The purity and balance is amazing. Quite a bit of structure but it works well.Just delicious now and this will continue to improve.

An ethereal wine - notes of rose petals, strawberry and earth. Very very fine tannins, silky smooth and balanced. Long finish with a pleasant grip and aftertaste of sour cherries.

SOM'd. Drunk by three people over around 3 hours.
97 pts

Rare Wine Co's Giacosa Riserva Dinner (Del Posto Restaurant, NYC): Big nose of minerals and cherries. Wow! Almost as structured as the 2001. Liquored cherries. A terrific and complex wine. Wine of the vintage.

Breathed in bottle for 3 hrs before consumption. Very nice complex nose of ripe red plummy fruit and charred tar. Palate ripe with very supple fruit. Young but quite open and drinking very well. Good acidity but not excessive for a Barolo, and nice long finish. Drinking very well now but can age.

Fantastic bottle. Decanted and served right away with eggplant parmigiana. It definitely opened up nicely. Still lots of tannin in this baby. Probably needs 5 more years to hit its stride, but was fun to indulge a little early.

This wine was not performing to the levels of the 1996 and 2001 tasted at the same time. Showed much better the last few times I've had it. Most likely an off bottle.
