Dark black and red fruit, bramble, strong lift, and great salinity. Tannins are on the sweet side, fully resolved, but layered texture and great length. This was drinking well when opened an improved with time. Excellent

Opened 6 hours before, took a small glass and left the bottle upright until the evening for slow aeration. At the beginning dark cherries and leather, which nearly disappeared and turned towards blackberries. Still quite tannic and structured, but everything is well together, a harmonious ensemble with a lot of class. A decant is nevertheless helpful.

The nose was lush and complex, dark fruits, spices and leather. However the palate was somewhat disappointing.
The vintage was hot and dry, supposedly typified by winemakers struggling with ripeness. In this bottle, with any trace of acidity completely lacking, fruit and structure have bled away over the past 2 decades.
What is still there is well made - you can definitely tell the quality of the producer. However there is a hollowness and simplicity that does not live up to their usual standards. Still an enjoyable bottle, though!

Deep ruby red color belies the missing nose and overwhelming tannin and some oak that dominated this bottle after a two hour decant. While its juiciness is unable mask the absence of muscle and depth, it may give simply joy for the next 2-3 years. They can't all be as complete as the '97. Try another bottle soon, and drink-up.

Balsamic, liquorice, black pepper, spices, leather, tar, vanilla notes, wet leaves. dark fruits. Medium plus acidity, silky tannins, medium plus body, medium plus finish, dark fruits, drink now, could have better few years ago??
We found this gem at a nice restaurant in a small italian village for 40% less than what you would pay retail these days. Had two bottles with consistent quality. Fully resolved tannins, smooth and silky texture and a fresh acidity. With some time in the glass a beautiful barnyard, forest floor and black truffle smell became dominant on the nose with intense dark fruit underneath. Very powerful palate with just hints of chocolate and herbs adding to the forest floor and dark fruit aromas. An intensifying long and sweet dark fruit/berries finish. These bottles were drinking very well right from the get-go (no decant needed) but I'm not sure how they were stored in the past few years. They were too warm and we had to cool them down before drinking. Hence, there is a possibility that they were stored in a too warm environment for some years and our wine was more mature than bottles from a perfect cellars would be today. 95++ points.

That was a great bottle of wine at its peak. A superb dark violet color and just from the opening very unctuous but not over the top. On the palate it just had such a rich presence of dark fruits, beautiful tannin integrated into the texture, and yet keeping the wine dignified, and just waves of aromas of fruits, earth, (not earthy) very suave, and would even say very sexy. Rich for sure, but it simply was marvelous with a great Bistecca Fiorentina. Sophisticated and yet superbly attractive wine. Yum!...

Decanted for two+ hours. Leather, dark fruit and dusty earth notes. Dark fruit with dusty earthy qualities. Could use more fruit; seems like it might be drying out.
Amazing tonight. No decant and it was great. Maybe give it 30-45 minutes. It did get better with a little air but was really good right out of the bottle. Still going strong - maybe not as big but no signs of getting over the hill. Really enjoyed this. 94+

Served blind. This wine has a very nice, typical Italian nose, with some herbs, tobacco and stable, and loads of typical Cab Franc dry gravel dust, with some signs of maturity. On the palate it’s more Bordeaux like with very pretty fruit, some creamy oiliness, soft tannins, very good balance and a medium + finish with slightly bitterness at the end. Lovely!

This is a remarkeable wine, as it is silky and ethereal yet complex and profound. The color is ruby and medium plus in intensity, with only a hint of garnet. The nose is clean and medium plus in intensity, with black and red fruit, plum, cigar box and a floral component. The nose is developing, with some secondary aromas. The palate is dry and consistent with the nose. The acidity is medium. The alcohol is medium at 14.5%. The tannins are medium plus but very fine and silky. The body, flavor intensity and length are medium to medium plus with a luscious, creamy, lingering finish. This wine is drinking beautifully now. It can age for several years more, but it might or might not improve further.

Tenuta dell' Ornellaia (The Wine Summit at the Post Hotel in Lake Louise): Similar color, but perhaps a shade darker; herbal laced spicy dark fruit in the aromas; round, full entry with upfront fruit - sweet black currant; flavor and texture package quite pleasing; finish is fruit driven - moderate length.

Sassicaia and Ornellaia Masterclass at Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (Landmark Hotel, London): Medium to deep red, brick at the edge. Nose of blackcurrants, plum compote, hints of red berry liqueur, slightly flowery with violets, some barnyard aromas, some eucalyptus, some coffee. Clearly developed, the oak notes are rather well integrated. The palate shows dark and some red berries, some plum compote, rather noticeable sweetness of fruit, rather soft but present tannins, spice. Rather ready to drink, could possibly develop slightly more, but can take long cellaring. 92-93 p

Decanter Sassicaia & Ornellaia Masterclass (Landmark Hotel London): Deep garnet with some faint brown on the rim. Deep nose with leathery, cedary, black olive and some farmyard aromas. A little different than the house style. Body is full and shows flavours of macerated fruit, sweet spice, saddle leather, spice, licorice and black olive. Flavours despite the body are somehow diluted for Ornellaia's standards. Medium + acidity.

Dark purple and heavy in the glass. Plum, blackberry, tobacco, flint and cedar on the nose. Secondary fig, black licorice and saddle hide. Full body with massive, new world fruit extraction. Initial dark and red fruit, spiced tobacco and cocoa powder on the palate. Secondary mushroom, olive and scorched earth. Turns more juicy, sweet and succulent on the back…long finish. Moderately complex and a little tight with a striking balance between rustic and new world. Paired superbly with Moroccan oxtail with polenta, roast fennel and Japanese sweet potatoes. Yum!

Drank it over 3 hours and it shows no signs of heading down. Ready to drink now but still quite a bit of tannins and hopefully it will soften in the next few years.

What a great bottle of wine. 2000 was not a great vintage in Tuscany but this is drinking very well now. Dark fruit and spice on the nose with a deep smooth and refined texture. I drank two bottles in Toronto on 10-23-10 at la Forchetta with duck risotto.

Joyce and Gillian's Birthday soiree (Faber Lodge Function Room): Dark brooding, jumpy black fruits, spice and lots of brambles. Powdery fine tannins. A little awkward at this stage . Some leather and tar. Feels like any modern Bordeaux or possible to pass as a moderate new world cab blend too. Not impressionable.

Soiree (Mount Faber Lodge, Singapore): A really nice wine. Most of us spotted this as an IGT, but were quite surprised at the vintage - this was certainly punching above its weight. Nose was poised somewhere in between Bordeaux and Tuscany, with lots and lots of earthy smells, a whiff of tobacco, some toasty mocha, a liberal dash of herbs and spices, and quite a bit of richness in its cassis and plum scents. Quite a bit of Merlot there I thought (30% says the winery's website). Palate carried on the theme, with ripe, slightly sweet plums and cherries layered over a deep bed of underlying black fruit tones. Through to the mid-palate, there were some fresh capsicum flavours speaking of 5% Cab Franc in the cepage, more tobacco notes and noticeably firm, slightly powdery but nicely ripe tannins given the wine a sense of shape and structure. Finish still had hints of oak swimming around, along with a whole panoply of flavours - cherries, plums, tobacco, spice, herbs and a sprig of mint - as the wine lingered in the mouth with quite impressive length. This was certainly drinking far better than the more noble and structured 2001 I had sometime back, but even then, I got the feeling that not everything was quite in the right place yet. It really deserves another 4-5 years of age, by which time it should be quite a treat.

Opened mainly to compare with the monstrous and backwards 2001. No decant. Much more open and developed on the nose than the 2001, and although not possessing the same scale, is still a massive wine by any standard. Strong anise, cedar and juicy fruit on the exuberant nose. A little crushed mint joins the fun. Good depth and some layered complexity. Lovely composed attack follows, extremely rich. Very confident and extravagant - can a wine be described as "gothic" (as in architecture, not teenagers in mascara)? Long black fruit finish. Without doubt the best 2000 I have had to date, this bottle is absolutely on it. My only criticism is that it still doesn't display that edgy minerality and sugar-paper sweetness I love from the wines of this estate in top vintages. Really throws the epic structure of the monolthic 2001 into sharp focus. Job done. Ready.

In a night of highly rated wines (some rightly some less so) this stood out, even against the wonderful 1990 Leoville Barton. Meaty, full bodied mint and licorice nose and meaty body that delivers the promise of the aromatics. Balance is not pinpoint, but second only to te L-B. Not the best vintage of Ornellaia but still a truly outstanding wine. No it's not on the level of the L-B, and never will be, but it's opulent, hedonistic and a proper party animal.

6 hours in decanter. Opaque crimson wine. Massive nose of focussed black fruit, garden mint and some alcohol. A little floral complexity and yeast (a touch bretty?). Very rich and almost savoury blackcurrant, plum and cherry flavours on the attack flowing through toa drying mid palate and moderately long toasty finish. Perhaps just a little green(?) but good complexity. Plenty of structure here, maybe give it a couple of years but drinking not too badly. A lovely wine by most standards although not a great Ornellaia - some of that minerality and balancing acidity/freshness so clear in a great vintage is a little lacking. An Orneallaia for food.

Dark purple color in the glass. Huge nose of ripe, extracted in your face fruit with graphite and pencil lead, ludens cherry cough drop and a touch of pyrazine. Palate is bursting with layers upon layers of ripe fruit and a healthy amount of oak without being over done. Definitely more new world than old. Gripping tannin and medium+ to high acid and a long finish. Awesome wine that is in a really good place right now.

Dinner (Doug 'n Susie's): It's been about 2 years since I've had this last, and it is showing quite a bit better right now. It still has a nice core of ripe red cherry and currants, alongside nice warm spices, slight earthiness, and a great balance of tannin structure and acidity. While not necessarily powerful, it has an intensity that delivers from start to finish..

Caroline Wine Shop - Italy-Tuscany (Carolines Wine Shop): Deep cherry colour, the wine has a powerful, intense nose with attractive dry spice, blackberry, orange peel and a hint of balsamic/soy. Dusting of cocoa powder. Penetrating and mouth-filling, with plenty of guts, this shows impressive depth and an alluring melted chocolate texture. Complex with dried fruits, raisins, sweet berries and spice cake, this is a high-quality example with a long, winding finish. Ornellaia is owned by the Frescobaldi family.

The Jug is done fooling around (Suite 100): I was happiest with this wine. Mostly because it never had a chance. Released during a time when people were getting sick of Super Tuscans, and their prices, in a vintage that was pretty much panned by the critics. Our store bought 18 bottles a few years back, and we had 15 left before this tasting. Well, the forgotten wine shone, and Tanzer's right again. I can't imagine this wine drinking much better then right now. Beautiful sweet red fruits caress the palate. Still some decent tannins, but they melted away after a double decant. This also managed to keep the echo of Italy, which is so rare in the Super Tuscan's I tried. The acidity, and suggestion of spices are reminders of its home soil. Not an ager, but a beautiful wine to drink right now. 93-95

one of the best wines ive ever had. this exhibits lovely dark fruit nose, viscous heavy mouthfeel laden with fruit oak and tannin all in balance. very new world for italian wine, but not overly sweet, fake or cloying in the slightest. best of all is a long evolving finish leaving you wanting more. was great on it's own and with amazing italian food at tre venezie in pasadena, our server their recommended this. well worth the $200. the 99 was also killer but not quite as special.

20th Anniversary for Ornellaia (Crowne Plaza Hotel, Rome): From Magnum. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc. Deep ruby colour. Nose of roasted coffee, warm earth, toasted grains/nuts, minerals. Palate: very Old-World in styling; savoury/umami character with no fruitiness; smooth tannins, moderate acidity, moderate alcohol, beautiful body (not too light, not too heavy), nice concentration with no over-extraction. Rich, complex, elegant in a manly way. Aromas developed with time in glass; on the palate it was great from first pour.

Daniel Schuster wine tasting event at Morrell's in NYC. We tasted a few of Daniel's NZ wines, French wines that he consults to, and finishing with a vertical of 2000, 2001 and 2002 Ornellaia. I loved this 2000 the best. Possibly because it had the most age. It was much different from the 2001 and 2002. I know that 2001 has gotten higher remarks than the 2000 (I have actually had the 2001 three times in the past two months). The 2000 has a grace and power to it, VERY fragrant and velvety. I could enjoy this over dinner at a restaurant and not be disappointed it was not ready. The others at my table preferred the 2001. I think the 2001 is probably going to be the better keeper.

This bottle was different then the other two I have tried who also were from from the same case. Strange.
This wine is more powerful and has not moved to the same maturity level as the previous bottles.
The wine has a great taste of sweet cherries, almond, dry sweet fruit, pipe-tobacco, some glue, leather, menthol, and sour Japaneese plums.
The aftertaste stays for a long time and there is a nice heat from the alcohol that makes the wine feel younger than it actually is.

Misc Bordeaux (Frederiksberg): Lovely clean black currant fruit nose with a little sewer and pine needles.
Polished and smooth black currant flavors with an impressive balance. Starting to show a little complexity but still very young.

Had this blind.
On the nose, cedar, pine, leather and some mineral.
In the mouth, Red berries, stable, heat from alcohol, nice balance with resovled tannins. Had expected more from this wine.

and with amazing italian food at tre venezie in pasadena, our server their recommended this. well worth the $200. the 99 was also killer but not quite as special.
