I didn't expect too much from this as I bought it in 1987 and left it so long that I was afraid to open it. I decanted and drank it straightaway. It had a brick colour with a hint of brown, blackcurrant aromas and on the palate. I thought it would collapse quickly, but it improved over an hour. It was lovely wine enjoyed with rib-eye steak.

A split opinion, DMD was not enthusiastic, felt it was tired and past its prime time. My opinion was more positive, fully mature, probably on the downslope but still offering interesting notes of rich fruits and forest notes, a little thin as it finished but worthwhile.

This was fun. Difficult to get into - the cork was sealed over with hard wax, and the cork itself was saturated and crumbled to bits. Once we got it out (and strained the cork chunks with cheesecloth), it was pretty interesting. At first, there was a lot of foresty dank, bring bing cherries, and dustbin. The fruit profile was pretty subtle. With decanting, the tart cherries came forward and the dankiness wafted off, which actually made it kinda sharper and less complex. It faded faster than I expected, but hey, no harm done - when you walk into a party lugging a 3L bottle of 1970 Margaux, nobody is gonna have a bad time.

Wine Education Service - Fine Old Bordeaux (Imperial College): A little age showing.
Strawberry jam aromas, very restrained, slightly oaky and there's a burnt note.
A rather ordinary attack but then it develops and improves in the mid palate.
