Still robust colour but early browning , concentrated and smooth , touch of old Shiraz bitterness at end of palate but overall delightful drinking , won’t improve but a few more years in it

Massive menthol here. Sweet blackberry fruit is still strong, amazingly this is more primary than tertiary. Tannins now soft but acidity and tannin still provide grip and lift. Full bodied. Very long and multiple layers of complexity. Drinking now and I know will be better in 5 years.

For me, this has reached a perfect level of maturity with an incredibly smooth texture and a wonderfully complex finish. There are the classic notes of dark berry spice but they are subdued in a beautiful way. This just glides over the palate. Wowza!

Four decades of Penfolds Grange (Chicago, IL): This drank very similarly to the fantastic 1990. The fruit isn't as intense and dark as the younger wine; it is more red-fruit and acid driven, but the potent aromatics and more importantly, the silky texture are both present. Perhaps a little less Parker-forward, and again this comes across more old-school elegant than the more rambunctious 1990. Both, however, were stunning examples of Grange.

(Penfolds Grange) Bricking dark red violet color; big, lovely, berry, ripe black plum American oak nose; plush, ripe berry, ripe plum, black fruit, mature palate with firm, grippy tannins; long finish
