This is massive as is to be expected. Still very young but a pleasure to drink nontheless. Huge vibrant blackberry fruit, covers what is an impressively structured wine. Long finish, some complexity. Can drink now but better to wait for 20 years - see my notes on the 1982 and 1981.

Bottle breathe for 8 hours. Voluptous and rich. Plenty of ripe black currant, blackcherry, dark chocolate, eucalyptus, some wild herbs like thyme and blackpepper, distinctive sweet vanilla and toast from oak. Powerful yet seamless and velvet. Still youthful at 20 years old. Always a delight to drink Grange.

Four decades of Penfolds Grange (Chicago, IL): I don't think this was a typical showing, especially in comparison to all the wines side-by-side, and in hindsight knowing how immensely consistent these wines were. The nose shows a lot of American oak, but more dustiness and earthiness. The fruit seems muted, and the palate as well doesn't have the same fruit-forwardness that the wines of this era seemed to have. This may have been modestly heat-damaged too, as what fruit there was seemed a bit oxidized.

Drank at magill. Tasted blind and everyone had to guess the vintage, I will happily take my 03/04 guess!!!! So youthfill still but showing nice development and softening tannins. Plenty of life left in this wine

(Penfolds Grange) #2; VaynerPAZZZ; COLOR-dark; NOSE-this has changed dramatically from yesterday; I'm getting a gasoline/auto body shop component; very herbaceous today; the fruit & Oak have subsided dramatically; stinky like the game "Skunk War"; vegetal soup (celery); TASTE-similar on the palate; Oak Monster is there; the beautiful fruit is there (peach; blackberry; blueberry); some petrol sneaking in; much drier on the back-end; a very focused blackberry flavor ripping throughout the flavor profile and a little more vegetal; better than yesterday, but still a PAZZZZ; WS-94; GV-90+
(Penfolds Grange) #2; VaynerPAZZZ; COLOR-dark; NOSE-tons of fruit; explosive; but the Oak monster is looming; vanilla cream & wood; black cherry soda; TASTE-I'm completely dumbfounded by the way this wine tastes; this tastes the same (an over-oaked fruit bomb) as quite a few $20-$40; too over-oaked and too much fruit; this wine is living on it's name; Penfolds needs to redefine their terroir IMHO; WS-94; GV-89
