1963 Penfolds Grange - 100% Shiraz Intense perfume of smoked meats and asian spices. The rich and velvety texture is enhanced by the Wine’s dark fruit profile. Reminds me of ‘59 Haut Brion with that signature Pessac smoke and scorched earth undertone. I would love to see how this would perform as a dead ringer in a double blind flight of old Bordeaux!

Vertical from Six Decades Of Grange at Matter of Taste w/ Peter Gago. There was significant bottle variation here from the 3 opened, and I think I got the unlucky draw. There was barnyard odor. Past that though, the tertiary flavors were lovely and nice. But even without the flaw, I preferred the '71.

Tasted at Penfolds Magill Estate, Adelaide. 40 Vintages of Grange: Made with 100% Shiraz. More balance than the '62. Round, fresh almost creamy palate (it spent 18 months in oak apparently). Yes its old but there's no trace of maderisation, oxidation or metallic characteristics at all. A beautiful bottle from a vintage perhaps not regarded as highly as some. This is the wine you want to take to dinner.

Brick red in color. Very intense nose, smells of mocha. Like it instantly. Took a sip, and it does not disappoint. Smooth and silky down the throat, full of flavours, no rough edges, very balanced and long. This is something very special. At its plateau and will still hold for a few more years. Outstanding amongst the 1971,1976,1986,1990, 1998, 2004 and a 1996 later at dinner. Makes one feel that all Granges should not be drunk before their 30th birthday. Lovely.
