Sunday Northern Rhône Survey (San Francisco): Ruby center with gentle fading. Very ripe fruit and a whiff of green. Lush medium to full body, oaky base. Strong, lively mixed fruit, spice, and ground coffee. Impressive volume, concentration, and staying power, but less finesse than I’d like from a 32 year old Syrah.

Smoke and brett kissed black fruit in the nose, this is a fairly simple and “modern” presentation, with its direct fruitiness, lush and juicy, clean and sweet. Shows well, but in a 14 vintage vertical tasting, can’t quite stand out with the top 7 wines, just not enough complexity.

(Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle) Bricked dark red violet color; tobacco, talc, bacon fat, light horseradish, licorice nose; mature, licorice, dried berry, garrigue, tart black cherry palate; long finish
(Paul Jaboulet Hermitage "La Chapelle") Tight, funky and unyielding at first but with 45 minutes this turned into a silky, sexy wine with an amazing pillowy mouthfeel and olive tapenade and dark berry fruit flavors and an outrageously long finish. Truly a great and overlooked La Chapelle.

Very expressive nose of rich dark fruit, grilled meats, spices and smoke. Big and plush on the palate.
