Nice mature wine. Very opulent feeling. However, this bottle (and another from the same lot before it) was marred by a sour aftertaste that prevented me by enjoying the wine. As others enjoyed more than I did, this may be a matter of taste

Served blind as a generous bonus wine. I guessed a Vergelegen Vergelegen 96. This was not accurate. Some bell pepper (which is where I think I got SA from) some menthol, good length. Something just missing in the middle palate - but I drink virtually no Chilean wine so don’t have a reference point really. Anyway - a most welcome and entertaining entree…

Gareth's "best of the 80s and 90s" (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Served fully blind, as a nice surprise. I guessed early 2000s Californian Cabernet. Turned out that the green Chilean note one diner spotted was indeed on the right track. 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot. Perfectly mature for my taste, with a nose of soft pipe tobacco, dry cigar, liquorice, something gorsey and spiky (presumably the aforementioned green note) and a touch of vanilla. The palate was quite plummy and very soft, with some pyrazine and chocolate mint towards the finish. Delicious, and a useful counterpoint to one's prejudices.

Gareth's Bordeaux Dinner - Hawksmoor Guildhall - Best of 80s and 90s (Hawksmoor, Guildhall, London): Served blind. Deep ruby/garnet, narrow rim. Nose shows ripe dark fruit, chocolate, also some mint and green pepper. Palate is medium/full bodied, rpe dark fruit, touch of mint, soft even voluptuous tannins, green pepper, decent acidity possibly not completey integrated, good length finish. Very good indeed and still going strong.
