Much better than the bottle tasted earlier this year, this was gorgeous. The perfume, with its notes of roses, truffles, dark cocoa, truffle and cherries was on fire. On the palate, the wine offered a rich, round, lush wave of earthy cherries, plums, tobacco and very dark chocolate. Just great. I am happy to have one more bottle remaining in my cellar.

This was my first time with this vintage, so I am not certain if this bottle was representative, Fading, with some ripe, sweet and tart fruits, there was a stern character to the tannins and textures. The nose was majestic, but this classicly styled wine seems to have had better days. I have another bottle in my cellar, so perhaps it will be better.

The P Wine (Bourbon Steak, Aventura, Florida): Not only is Pétrus splendid in 1964, the Trotanoy is too, and almost a match. If these two are any indication the Right Bank was indeed highly successful, gathered after a propitious summer and before the rains. Just a trace of oxidation detracts but the intensity of black olive and truffle is compelling. There is no sweetness but the balance is excellent and this too seems like it could go on for a long time. Extended age ability is by no means limited to the northern Médoc.

Trotanoy Vertical with Edouard Moueix (Nomad): I upgraded my score after lots of swirling to coax something out of this very closed wine. At first there was no nose at all. With time it came alive. Still lots of tannins. Signature smokey Merlot notes. Trotanoy vertical 1945-1982 (+1998, 2009,2010)

Pomerol 1947-1989: Awesome intense nose. The body is pretty light at this point and the finish was short. Past its prime. Pomerol 1947-1989 Dinner.
