  • At first seeing the cork I was concerned this wine was going to be flawed. After a long tedious battle to open the bottle, a full cleaning of the inside neck of the bottle we poured off one glass to smell. Delight! After 1 hour decanting the wine showed that its ready. Dark cherries, dark plum and chocolate on the nose. Cranberries, sour cherries and soft tannins on the palate. The Cab Franc was definitely present. It could be better if cellared for a few more years but my opinion is that its ready now. A 90 because of how it has maintained all the fruit and the tannins.

  • In a weird amber bottle.
It's still drinkable at 56 years, so I don't want to be too harsh.
Deep hue and still significant tannin structure.
What this wine lacks now and probably never had is charm.
The complexity is missing and so is the balance.
Not even close to the 66 VCC which is still drinking very well.
    A major disappointment..

  • Barely holding on to life, it took effort to find much pleasure here as the fruit has faded and the finish is on the tart side. This is not a defective wine, it is simply past its prime from a weak vintage for Pomerol.

  • It got better with air. Although it’s not brilliant it has plenty of life and was more energetic and interesting than the 1982 version we had with it. Fairly brown in color. Gentle aroma of baked plum and earthy dark cherry. Healthy acidity, still some tannin so the structure is sound like many ‘66s to this day. An intellectual challenge, the anti-fruit bomb experience.

  • Not surprisingly, when there is cork failure the wine fails to perform. The top of the cork was shriveled and it immediately fell into the bottle with the slightest touch of the Durand. It must have held somewhat though since the level was VHS. It’s not hopelessly oxidized either, just pinched and just too lean even though a vestige of the fruit is still there. Good acids and tannins, it’s more about the structure than the grape. Sound bottles of ‘66 Trotanoy are still fragrant and lively.
